  This is something I support. I’ve had/have significant involvement in community circus groups in Auckland and Dargaville, and know several people who are heavily involved, including some of the people in Te Kura Maninirau. These are almost all not for profit groups who do some amazing stuff among and for young people in NZ.
  Circability is the group I know best, find them here: https://www.circability.org/, and this is the one I know well up in Dargaville: https://www.circuskumarani.co.nz/
  Circability uses circus based activities to help people with disabilities to improve their gross and fine motor skills and build self esteem. They also provide circus activity to schools as part of their sports programs and run school holiday programs. If you have ever seen a Circus in the Park activity in any of Auckland’s parks, it would have been Circability. Most of their activities are free or they ask for a donation.
  I’ve see up close the impact these community circus groups have on young people, creating a supportive group where people learn to trust each other and develop new skills while having fun. What little boy hasn’t dreamed of “running away to the circus”? These groups make that dream a reality and they need all the support they can get.
  I don’t begrudge $128,352 from my rates going to a group that does such good work. Knowing what I know we are getting a 5:1 return on our money in work done among the community, with many of the “staff” drawing minimum salaries and giving up long hours to do what they love: Circus with young people.

      If you look on the web sites of these organizations you will see that most of them get funds from a wide range of sources. Lion Foundation, Lotto, Pub Charity, etc. I know that in return for their donation from Auckland Council, Circability run the Circus in The Parks activities for free. While you may not be particularly interested, these draw a lot of participants and attracts the public to the parks. The idea that these are just “donations” from council is false. These groups earn every cent they get by working over weekends and public holidays to bring some life and colour to Auckland.

    Rates are paid for city infrastructure and maintenance. If people want to give to charities they can do it directly. Don’t forcibly take peoples money (rates) and then give it to the charities of your choice.

      No.
      Social welfare (which includes art and culture) is a social need and therefore a government responsibility. That applies to national and local level government. if it can be better run by private enterprise and personal philanthropy can handle it better then government can delegate the responsibility to them but the primary responsibility is still held by the government.
      If government dumps social welfare, art and culture then they are just leaving it on the ground for the best funded and organized foreign power or lunatic cult to pick up and use for their own purposes.
      And as private enterprise can handle infrastructure and maintenance then why not hand all of that off to them as well?
      Social welfare, art and culture comes first and physical infrastructure is all built and maintained on the back of that.
      It’s a bit of an over simplification but Politics really is downstream of Culture and infrastructure is further downstream of that.
      If you fail to make your contribution to social welfare, art and culture then you are a parasite living off the work of the people who do.

    With ridiculous rates increases and ballooning debt it’s time that councils stopped pissing away money on vanity projects like this. It is absolutely not council’s business to teach kids to be clowns. (Although if the kids needed role models they need only look at the councillors who approved this spending)
    If this programme is so very worthwhile there are plenty of private benefactors who will sponsor them.

  If Oz Labor hangs on and becomes a minority Government on 3 May their economy will be even more stuffed than it is now. Labor will need the Greens and the Teals to form a Government. The Greens like our lot are anti mining anti growth pro uncontrolled immigration. Oz has a Trillion dollars of debt and forecast deficits for at least the next 10 years.
  This Government would add to that. If I was a NZ exporter to Oz I would looking for alternative markets. Oz is our 3rd export market. A severe downturn in their economy would impact us unless we were able to find other markets.

Why does a 9 year old need to know about consent and I’m guessing talking about gender stereotypes is not confirming that there are boys and girls and you can’t swap?

How about teaching suitable content only at primary school eg the reproductive system so you understand your bits and leave the sex stuff till at least 12-13 at which point it’s functional only, not promotion of homosexual acts (yes that’s in the curriculum)

The whole thing is actually sick.

Then to make it worse, when you go and try to review the content and leave feedback you pretty much have to be fluent in maori.

I dont want be kids to be over sexualised.
I dontvwant gender idealogy forced on them.
I don’t want to talk or read in maori.

Any suggestions on what country I should move to because this is getting real ugly

      I went a few pages into the survey monkey submission stuff and that was in English too.

Road rage incident – driver and elderly victim both charged with ‘fighting in public’.
Seemed case was set down for hearing before a JP but the driver who would be the star witness against the elderly victim was out of the country and was not able to attend. The victim’s lawyer asked for the case to be thrown out but the JP declined and so the poor victim has to face another day in court later.
This case raises the following issues:
1. The Police allegedly knew its star witness was going to be out of the country so why did the Police not seek an adjournment instead of wasting the victim’s, lawyer’s (paid for by the victim) and court’s time. Also this sort of cavalier behaviour amounts to ‘punishment by procedure’ which is surely unacceptable.
2. The Police were uncooperative in not providing a brief of evidence to the defence lawyer claiming it was a ‘courtesy’ rather than a ‘requirement’. I thought that sort of thing had been sorted in the aftermath of the Arthur Alan Thomas Affair – that is the prosecution has to put its cards on the table up front. Perhaps a law amendment is needed here.
4. The victim would potentially argue ‘self defence’. So why did the prosecutor try and push his luck with a ‘fighting in public’ charge when the victim could most probably argue ‘self defence’.
5. The ‘fighting in public’ charge is in the Summary Offences Act (in past years called the Police Offences Act) which is basically a legal toolkit to support the Police. However since ‘fighting in public’ is pretty well victimless (even more victimless than pee-ing in public), why are the Police even wasting time with this sort of charge when there are many more serious matters needing attention.
I think the Police Minister should be asking the Commissioner some awkward questions about this case. No wonder some people want to ‘defund da police’.

Few will be surprised at some (effective) child poverty numbers posted by Lindsay Mitchell. After all, child poverty was top of mind for a recent Prime Minister, and no doubt still exercises the current Ministers

Based on babies born in 2023, by age 2 years three times as many Maori babies as others were dependent on welfare. Lindsay says mostly sole parent benefit , not jobseeker.

She writes – Growing up in homes where nobody works is bad for children. They are more exposed to transience, abuse and neglect, violence, poor educational outcomes, poor health outcomes and substance abuse.

The generational impact is like the family tree – or succession to Maori land – exponential change in numbers in a very few generations.

Ms Mitchell proposes one solution – Maori must take control. Good luck with that, plenty of opportunities already, maybe sometimes happening but clearly not enough. And bearing in mind all of these parents and children are only part Maori. The Teen Parent Programme, was supposed to head some of that generational impact off at the pass. It is still in place, but is it actually working? There must be results available by now.

So nature, nurture or something else? Does anyone actually know the underlying causes? (Avoiding ‘that’ first cause, too obvious.)

Seems like a lot of taxpayer funding goes into race-based research and initiatives. A deep dive into the Young Parent Programme would be a start, possibly followed by how many liable parents are not supporting their offspring.

    It may be more accurate than just ‘colonisation’ to say ‘second colonisation’.
    The first may be a physical colonisation of one’s ancestors.
    But the second colonisation is a mental state which may initially relate to historic first colonisation, but is a mind-set written on each Maori child’s clean slate by their own parents, or as mentioned in Lindsay Mitchell’s article, just as likely ‘own parent’, singular, and immediate society.
    
    The first historic physical colonisation probably happened to a generation or two, while the second mental colonisation happens to many of every generation since.
    
    The United Nations recognises this surely in the UN definition of indigenous people –
    
    “Indigenous communities, peoples and nations are those which, having a historical continuity with pre-invasion and pre-colonial societies that developed on their territories, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of the societies now prevailing on those territories, or parts of them.

    The government can have as many dropkick parents and as much child abuse as it is prepared to pay for. The growth in this industry is one of the success stories reflecting a long term cross party commitment to investing in this over many decades. NZ is a world leader in child abuse.

      Maybe funding people to get a job and stay in it could work. $10k after year one and another $10k after year two.

      I think blaming others IS the ‘real problem’. It takes away personal responsibility.
      
      For example, when you or your kids dont attend / succeed at school and you can blame it on ‘a curriculm tailored against Maori’ its easy to walk away and say ‘it’s not my fault’. When non Maori fail at school they might say ‘what am I doing that is causing me to fail?’.
      
      On the Maori side there is a culture of ‘its someone elses fault’ and that is causing them to fail to take responsibility for their actions.
      
      Obviously this is all generalisation.

  As I know very little about Jewish holidays, religious customs etc, I looked it up (and assume it is a correct interpretation):

  However the idea of Alberta or other places becoming the ’51st’ State of the US is just not going to happen.
  Too much turmoil and it will upset the current balance within the US.
  Far more likely a Compact of Free Association would be arranged and that would be better. This structure would suit Greenland too.

I should know, since at the time of these events I was on the Science and Technology Committee of the House of Lords. I thought a lab leak was unlikely but possible. Then these two statements were published. To my eternal shame I—and my committee colleagues—took these two papers as definitive evidence against the lab leak theory from experts in the field. Several peers and journalists asked me if a lab leak was likely. “No,” I said, “These two papers have ruled it out.”

Several months later, I discovered that I had been lied to—deliberately, maliciously, and consequentially. Yes, I am angry about that. So should you be.

  There are about 10,000 wet markets in China. That a “sick bat” should have turned up at the wet market closest to a virus research lab researching the same sort of virus is just pure bad luck.

  Yet nobody put their hands up and said: “Hang on a minute”? Why not? All that pressure to not be labelled a conspiracy theorist maybe?

      I think it is wrong for GPs to be held culpable.
      Yes, they are responsible for decision making, but they only implement the policies determined by others. GPs do not do research. Most GPs are not even equipped with sufficient statistical understanding to interpret academic papers etc.
      
      GPs are 100% reliant on others telling them what they need to do.

        That it is up to Dr’s ( GP’s) to advise and administer Drugs ( Vaccines).
        We all know this was not the case and everyone was coerced into taking it.
        It also came up during an Australian senate committee ( 2 years ago ?) with 2 x Pfeizer execs stating that all countries check and authorise its use ( TGA in Oz and Ministry of Health in NZ etc), Thereby absconding all responsibility.

    As you say, it was obvious to anyone with a brain, that the ‘scientists’ claiming a lab leak was extremely unlikely but the “Pangolin eats a bat and travels a 1000 miles to a wet market outside the lab was ‘likely'”, were politically motivated.
    
    Unfortunately Big tech (Twitter, YouTube, Face Book etc) were all perfectly happy to block, censor or hide posts to the contrary. One was not allowed to argue with ‘the science’. The media, happily lapping up their government funding, were just as happy to ignore reality.         The PM controls the ministers, police and army.
        Then the health department controls the doctors etc.
        The threat of being sacked controlled nearly everyone, families to be fed and mortgages to pay.

    I personally do not think this is a “man made” virus and I don’t think there is strong evidence to support that yet.
    
    I do think it was a virus – likely a naturally bred virus – that escaped from a lab. That has always been the only real credible scenario.
    
    Of course it comes down to what do you mean by “man made”. If you include breeding a virus using natural methods in a lab environment then possibly, but I think the idea that it was man made through genetic engineering etc to be a bit of a leap.

      There is an aspect of how the covid virus works that makes it far more contageous to humans then regular bird flu viruses.
      
      ‘COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has a unique spike protein that binds efficiently to the ACE2 receptors found on human cells. This binding mechanism allows the virus to enter and replicate within human cells more effectively.
      
      On the other hand, bird flu viruses, such as H5N1, primarily infect birds and have a harder time binding to human cell receptors. While bird flu can occasionally infect humans, it doesn’t spread easily from person to person’
      
      Initially there were a number of medical people calling this as likely manufactured (gain of function, which was what the lab was doing). I cant find much online now and AI tools tell me that the majority of scientists believe it is natural.
      
      It seems highly suspicious, that a virus that most likely escaped a lab doing gain of function research, is entirely natural. It’s possible and we have no proof otherwise (that I know of).
      
      I guess it doesn’t really matter. The question was, where did the Covid19 pandemic start, a Pangolin / bat or a lab leak. Natural or modified, the virus most likely cam from the Lab.

Is there no level to which our bent press won’t descend? Bezzant sought selection for Botany in 2019 – missing out – but was then successful as candidate for Upper Harbour which he lost at the election.

After a curious incident in 2021, Bezzant resigned from the National party.

So now, four years later on, with Bezzant having no connection at all to National, that Stuff should choose to thus headline an article by Rachel Moore really only underlines the fact of Stuff’s complete absence of balance and its position in nowhere, even remotely, approaching journalistic objectivity.

      1. Encouraging people to be candidates via National101 and Candidates College. They are after people who had not seriously considered a political career but would make capable MP’s and Ministers. This extra group of prospective candidates would tend to crowd our some of the second raters etc.
      2. Deeper background checks, reviews etc. Not perfect, but would reduce the chances af a troublesome person getting selected.
      As for existing MP’s:
      1. If a MP was not performing or bothersome, Chris would read them their Horoscopes (Royal Navy expression meaning a sailor has no future in the Navy – the Army call it a meeting without coffee). Such list would quietly resign and such electorate MP’s would wait until 6 months before an election to resign (so a byelection is not needed).
      2. If an electorate MP, he or she would have an uphill battle being re-selected. An incumbent electorate MP is at some advantage here since electorate office holders generally support their MP’s.

This sentence calls the whole threat assessment’s credibility into account:

The rest of the article is all lefty buzzword bingo with phrases like ‘radicalised online’ and ‘stochastic terrorism’ peppering the article.

It would be interesting to know how much the Greens have paid for this PR piece.

In boredom I looked at a year 8 (third form) maths education site.
I looked at the questions converting square metres to hectares.
I thought; “Christ knows how lucky we are that our country went metric.”
I thought back to my third form year when I tried to calculate how many perches there were in one acre It was bloody difficult for a 13 year old.
I remember that old drawing room joke;
Did you hear the joke about the half acre?
I can’t tell you. It is two rood.

  The scary thing is that many kids are using calculators to do the division required to convert square metres into hectares.
  
  A few years ago, I was doing some calculations with a teen who pulled out a calculator to divide by 10. I did it in my head and the kid looked at me as if I was some magical being. I took a minute to explain that dividing or multiplying by 10 just means moving the decimal point.
  
  The kid was amazed with this new “hack” and went off to show his mates.

    I did use my walker. It belonged to my late Mother. I kept it for this very purpose!
