The New Auckland – creating slums.
Take a drive around the latest developments in Papakura. You may be shocked. Here is a preview of what you will see.
1. Houses less that 3 metres wide. Two stories, many with three generations crammed into uncomfortably small rooms. No garages or off street parking. No private area outside. Any situation of raised voice is heard by three or four neighbours.

2. Narrow streets but on both side a ridiculous 2.5 metre concrete footpath. Very difficult to drive down the street after 5.00pm. Some houses have three cars outside. A narrow grass verge growing weeds. Unpainted board fences constructed with green timber that is now warped, broken, leaning over, some with graffiti.

3. Cars jammed at all angles on the verge and footpath. Almost impossible to walk along the street or the footpath. Any verge areas muddied up or weeds to fence height.

4. No play areas for kids. No lawns or a pocket handkerchief sized open area also growing weeds. Kids wandering around on the street.

5. Many have no outside clothes line for healthy drying. Clothes are draped over fences.

6. Odd corners are accumulating rubbish. That means rats, smells, disease.

7. Plus features:

a. The small of curries cooking where ever you go.
b. Housing new immigrants who can cope with cramped conditions for a year or three until they can afford something bigger and better.

    Cmm: Not sure if ur being facetious mate. I don’t venture to South Auckland, but driving round newer areas of Albany and Silverdale is just as depressing: it’s Coronation Street in the southern hemisphere. And with wood replacing brick.

      I’m not being facetious at all.
      
      It isn’t the Evil White Man cramming three generations into two rooms. They’re going it themselves. Therefore it must be better than other options they have.
      
      If you’ve lived 8 to a single roomed mud hut in Africa, then one of these small dwellings looks like a palace.
      
      Still, from an outside perspective – there goes NZ. It is certainly likely these will be ghettos in 10 to 20 years.

        Fair enough,. The word I should have used was slums. They’re ghettos now and destined to become slums in 10 to 20 years.
        
        The reason these are ghettos (ie. poor areas occupied primarily by minority groups) is because these areas are a good deal for them.
        
        You or I and quarter-acre-dreamer NZers from the 1970s might turn up our noses to these, but if you come from a tiny apartment in Delhi or such then it’s pretty good.

        GD that is right.
        
        In Hastings just across the road from Splash Planet on Grove Road there are at least a dozen and maybe as many as twenty I assume to be new Housing NZ places built as per TT’s specifications above.
        
        Those fronting Grove Road, some front a back street, have been occupied for 6 to 8 weeks and when mrspdm and I drove past early on we commented on the quality of cars in the driveways – not a dunger to be seen. There seemed to be some hope.
        
        6 to 8 weeks on not a blade of grass has been mown and these brand new houses are already taking on a scruffy, unkempt look.
        
        No pride whatsoever.

        Council insist on landscaping that no one wants. KO dosent want it as no one will look after it.
        
        Jacinda removed the requirement for carparking in 1 or 2 bedders… but in Hawkes Bay there is no public transport…so what do they do?

      What tilted me was all the private construction claiming all the on-street parking with signs telling private citizens that they would be towed if they parked next to the construction site because the construction company is too venal to site proper access and need to offload all of their material with a Hiab over the safety fence.
      This is not the publics problem if anyone should be fined it should be the clown show developers taking 10+ years to build some shoe boxes and disrupting everyone elses life in the process.

        Builders often lease council space for their use, including on-street parking. If they didn’t think they needed them, they wouldn’t waste the $.
        
        If they’re simply assuming a bogus right to use them (and tow others that do), that’s wrong and could be easily challenged.

    @cmm. I acknowledged your point in the last comment I made. It is probably true for many arriving in NZ. The question is what happens when immigration slows down or stops? Do we have to keep bringing in new immigrants to keep these places occupied?
    
    What will they look like in 30 year’s time?

      I think we can expect that they will become slums and, quite likely, will have a constant stream of “new immigrants” coming through these areas.
      
      I would expect that most people would move out of these areas as their fortunes improve – moving to either better houses or even leaving NZ and moving to Australia etc with the rest of the competent people.
      
      Thus we can expect more transients and less real community building in these areas.
      
      All pure speculation of course…

    Conversely though we have western kids whose parents have a large house that they own in Auckland yet they choose to go and stay in the Halls for $15k per year and put it on their student loans. Or leave their parents house with adequate room to go flatting when they haven’t started saving a deposit for a house.
    
    And then ask why they can’t afford a house.
    
    In other cultures the elderly might look after young instead of putting them in daycare, or elderly live with the kids so they don’t go to a retirement home.
    
    These decisions will affect future wealth more even than avocado on toast.

  Our daughter and son in law live in Papakura – and meet at least 1, 2, 4 and 5 although they have no children to worry about.
  
  They are a block or two off Cleveland Road and surrounding area is not enticing as far as I could see whenever we have visited.

  Much of that is not the problem of the developers. Requiring off street parking was considered appropriate in the past, but really this is a tradeoff that purchasers should be allowed to make. Similarly on street width unless the street has some arterial function. Parking should be restricted on one or both sides as need be to allow fire appliances and other utility vehicles to travel freely along the street.
  It is also not the developer’s fault if the dwelling was intended for a single person or couple without kids, but its occupants overcrowd it.

  Here in Taupo we now have have two areas where there are illegal housing. Shacks and shanties including buses and caravans built onto. No running water and not connected to sewage lines or septic tanks. Surrounding land with old cars etc. A council too terrified to do anything. the local tribe have just opened a brand new $40 million building.

  Unfortunately, this has been happening for a while now – new ghettos and slums to come – and not just in Papakura. We are importing many low-skill labour, and the only “affordable” places to live are on the outskirts of Auckland. Further, part of the reason for these types of houses is council requirements without different housing styles. No public transport and, therefore, high dependency on cars. If we are to avoid slums, we need to dramatically slow down immigration and allow for quality dense housing as there are in other countries.
  Of course, Luxon wants to ramp up immigration from India so it’s going to continue.

  These are as designed. The dream of NZ cities having subways like NY, London or Singapore relies on housing density. You can only have good affordable public transport with high density. That means appartment buildings or at a pinch lots of tiny houses with no land and parking.
  
  Look at the US. Cities with good public transport have highrise and high housing prices. The cities with low housing prices have large sections and roads but poor public transport. It really is a choice between one or the other.
  
  In NZ the greenies have been fighting for high density and high price housing (by setting city borders and restricting land supply) for decades.
  
  Look at Christchurh as a good alternative. After the earthquakes a lot of land was opened up. Generally low / medium density housing. Prices did not jump much during Covid and have not fallen during thre recession. p.s. Yes I know there are areas in CHCH with high density, I am speaking in general.

      Not 100% sure what you mean. Auckland (and many other cities) have limited greenfield land, by design. The only way to build is to put more on smaller sections.
      
      These ‘slums’ are the result of the council planners plans for better public transport. They aren’t the result of too much immigration or poor developers. The town planners want more density.

        Yes, one reason for the open spaces and golf courses etc is to deal with rainfall and help avoid flooding.
        The high density housing leaves little room for rain to soak in to the ground.

    Christchurch roading infrastructure is already groaning under the load. I have been commuting in and out of Auckland CBD quite a lot lately and surprisingly my average speed in Auckland is faster than my 12 month rolling average commuting in and out of the Chch CBD.
    There are whole suburbs being done over with “medium density” 4 townhouses on sections that used to hold a single dwelling. Go for a drive through Spreydon – future ghettos in the making.
    The vast majority of new inner city housing only comes with (at best) one carpark. We used to be able to park on the streets round say Latimer Square at night. Not anymore, all taken up by the 2nd and 3rd cars in those new units.

      Personally I find getting around Christchurch a breeze, much better then Auckland. However I dont often go into the CBD. That is appallingly bad, also by design.
      
      The ‘public transport at all costs’ planners, 30km speed limit, bus lanes and traffic lights are all designed to make driving as unpleasent as posible. It works.
      
      My wife works in the CBD for the evil empire (govt). There are no staff parks and a car pool for staff to do site visits (which she does) . She takes the bus in and out of work.
      
      Oh, I agree there is a lot of infill dev in CHCH but generally the pricing of housing is more realistic here then most other main centres.

  And some are built with no garage/off street parking which IMO should not be allowed. So many streets are now lined with parked cars making the street so thin that two cars cannot pass each other.

    I recently read Salman Rusdie’s book Knife which is a biographical account of his attempted murder. He talks of brave Muslim writers who have met an early death for criticising extreme elements in their religion. There is a paradox in the book in that he is a lefty, he acknowledges that left wing leaders in particular have thrown him under the bus. Yet still criticises right wing leaders despite the fact that Margaret Thatcher kept him alive.

Now that there’s an easy case to think about, with obvious outrageous abuse of an innocent child. And it just so happens, circumstances where I don’t feel like there’s any way that protecting the autonomy of the individual could result in any personal risk at all for me.

New Zealand’s ad-hoc, every individual issue is treated as its own separate island based on how the news reporting makes me feel, approach to right & wrong continues. Principles are something to stick up for for when decisions are easy, and the right action is obvious.

Some really interesting studies on WFH. The consensus is that hybrid is best. Most employees like a proportion of home so favour in-office Tuesday to Thursday, home on Monday and Friday. (I’d call that a three day week rather than hybrid). Most employers want most of their staff in the office but apparently hybrid results in less turnover and recruiting is very expensive.

I’m suspicious of the Monday/Friday at home preference, too much like a very long weekend, and the research quoted consistently mentioned the opportunity to catch up on domestic chores. Commuting was another downside. But the upsides of being in the office are huge. Very few jobs are better WFH. A barrister working on a speech perhaps, data entry might work, but not many others.

My granddaughter is in the office one day a week. But she controls a UK traffic signage company’s IT security and is on or near a screen perpetually, so her job is very much an exception. For most jobs in the office for all really is best.

  At the same time companies seem to be going through the “hot desk” phase again. No permanently assigned desks, first come first served. People like their personal space.
  
  Many are also limiting parking etc too.
  
  All this makes it very unpleasant to actually go to the office. One of my major customers has hybrid work and unless you get to the office before 8.30 you won’t find a parking. As a result, many just WFH.
  
  Are they getting a performance hit? Likely yes. But then they are not suffering all the interruptions and such of working in an office either.

    Hot desk is an awful concept. I want to have my seat and my desk setup to my preference. I don’t want someone else’s sweaty arse farting into my seat if I’m not there.
    I’d be looking to change jobs if I was employed by a hot desk business. It just screams “employees are not valued individuals”.

    Hot desking never worked in primary school, especially when the desk had a lid and you stored your stuff in the desk at the end of the day.
    
    There is no reason to suggest that hot desking works anywhere. As a part time temporary contractor, maybe. But to an employee it sends an unconscious message: “You are transient, not part of a team, and no longer an individual. You could be made redundant, or shifted to another dept at a moment’s notice.”

    When I started my first job (daily newspaper) there were five of us in a smallish room.
    We each had our own desk, telephone and typewriter.
    People came in and out of the room frequently and often noisily.
    We managed.
    As the most junior one there, I did as I was told and did the work listed under my name in the diary every day.
    There was oversight of everything I did.
    That was the expectation of our employer – (which was not a government department.).
    The owner of the company was paying the wages, not the taxpayer.

    Exactly. Businesses can’t have it both ways. Many have 80% or less office space for their workforce.
    
    Plus, working in teams benefits from colocation. The hot desk model means a team won’t be guaranteed to be together, and may not even be on the same floor. For team cohesion that’s no different to working from home.

    Hot desking certainly does not work with my sort of work where we are developing firmware (ie software for running on electronics). My desk has cables, special antennas and around $20k of logic analysers and oscilloscopes etc.
    
    I think hot desking could work for some people who have their whole life on a laptop, but even then it’s terrible for teamwork/community building.

  The lamented Benedict Yu used to quite correctly refer to non-working in the office. Chats, breaks, faffing about.
  
  That’s actually under the eye of bosses. I once terminated an employee who seemed to be working hard but not producing much. A review of their work email showed they were running an extensive side hustle.
  
  WFH, multiply by … ?
  
  I used to work for a multinational that cancelled ALL WFH after finding employees on the payroll that nobody knew about.

        When I was in NZ I used to publish my address on here, and invite my – invariably anonymous other than the killer – critcs to come out and confront me in person. None ever did.

        BY mostly works in government departments – it would seem as a contractor – and was outspoken about their processes.
        
        This could compromise his future employment.
        
        I use a pseudonym for similar reasons and, like BY, I have probably leaked enough information that anyone with a bit of motivation could figure out who I am.

  I did WFH from late 2018 through to late 2021. (so a year before C19 made it common) and, as a software dev, I far prefer working in the office.
  1.) better collab (the ability to ask a colleague to “hey look here quick is invaluable)

    Pretty much the same, as a contractor. I did hours at home tho when I had some serious report writing to do. But otherwise the ease of collaboration with others on other work, consulting etc was what being in the office provided.
    
    Something that always got me tho was those that used their work phone after hours for personal use and then moaned about getting work related texts or emails or phone calls after hours. I never understood why they just didn’t leave their work phone at work which is the way it always was before cellphones. I suppose the moaning was the price they paid to have a free personal phone service.

  It’s horses for courses, Cassandra. I wfh 2 days and have a role that is deadline and project based. I’m not a barrister or data entry clerk. It’s obvious if the work is not being completed on time. In nearly 5 years of hybrid working, performance issues have never been raised with me. Like your granddaughter, I only need a laptop to do my job. The office is busier these days which creates problems like not enough desks. I enjoy being in the office but I enjoy the flexibility to drop my kids at school twice a week or run an errand at lunchtime I would otherwise try and do on a Saturday.

    Similarly I work in the private sector and have WFH for more than 10 years. Never had a time sheet disputed or questions about my work. Occasionally I appear in the office but it’s such a time waster – endless social club, te reo BS, people talking. I get double the volume of work done at home. Could never go back.       @wsk – I’ve been WFH or WFH hybrid since 2008 – originally driven for personal reasons but my roles are service based and it’s clear when I’m not delivering and frequently have outisde of 9-5 requirements so any customer of mine who cannot cope with that I don’t bother with.
      
      Having said that it definitely is not for all. When we had our own services company we had about 25% who didn’t perform WFH but the majority seemed equal or better and appreciated the flexibility it gave them, We were sensible enough not to punish all for the failures of the minority and those that did not perform lost their ability to WFH.
      
      However, I’ve done a lot of work with corporates in the last 20 years and they seem to have a significantly higher percentage who perform worse when WFH and corporates tend to have a higher percentage of idle staff anyway. I can see why many corporates are moving back to mandatory attendance.

  If we had everyone back in the office every day of the week, it would affect parking for all the other business in our neck of the woods. We’ve increased headcount over the years since the great cough plagued the land to the point where we don’t have enough parking onsite for everyone, and we take up most of the onstreet parking whenever we have an all hands on deck situation.

  Is islamic sharia law in western democracies like catholic canon law? Or is the idea that ‘having’ sharia law in democracies mean it’s incorporated into government legislation. If its like canon law then fill your boots as it’s only of concern to those that choose or are somehow locked into that belief system.       Just give me competence and clear freemarket policies.

    About 10 years ago I was doing a paper at Massey University on religion and as part of our studies we went to the university mosque. Prior to the visit I clarified whether we would have to bow down in the Muslim fashion to Allah? The lecturer said no, we could just sit cross legged on the floor at the back of the room and that would be fine. That’s what we did.
    
    It surprised me that Luxon didn’t take the same approach? We would not require a Hindu visitor to NZ to cross themselves when visiting a Catholic Church or take communion in a church or recite the Lord’s prayer.
    
    I’m surprised that Luxon didn’t draw the line at bowing to foreign gods when he’s a Christian himself? Whatever other peoples thoughts on the issue, Christians should not bow down to any other God and every Christian knows that.
    
    While I support Luxon in the area of trade agreements, the bowing to foreign gods is a miss for me. Also I’m worried that we are going to see more of an increase in immigration from India? I like Indian people, however the numbers are too much for our small population in my opinion.

    Back in your time it was possible to have a coherent, civil, and often fruitful, discussion with a Greenie even if you were in vigorous disagreement.
    
    I had many insightful discussions with Nándor Tánczos and those that came before him. I doubt it would be at all possible with anyone from the last 10 or so years.
    
    The last one I really had anything to do with was Mojo Mathers. Massively confrontational even just trying to have a basic conversation.

I’m being provocative, but you would think that a party that shouts all the time from its pulpit about diversity and the need for representation reflecting the nation make-up that they would have more deaf, blind, dumb or physically disabled.   Her bio then cites a series of shibboleths for far leftists: voting to opposing deep sea oil and gas drilling because “climate emergency”, voting for appointing two Ngāi Tahu Councillors, more subsidies for bus fares, living wage and to “create an Aotearoa where people and environment flourish under Te Tiriti.”

Proposed changes to the electorates released.

Wellington is set to lose an electorate as a result of boundary changes proposed by the independent Representation Commission.

The Ōhāriu, Mana and Ōtaki seats are set to be removed with two new electorates named Kenepuru and Kapiti created instead.

This affects Labour’s Greg O’Connor who is the MP for Ōhāriu, Labour’s finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds, MP for Mana, and National MP for Ōtaki Tim Costley.

  Interesting piece of information I picked up with work over the years, related to electoral boundaries. In wellington there’s a retirement accommodation building halfway up ngauranga gorge where the electoral ward boundary goes down the hallway. There was also a grove in Tawa or somewhere there where the end half of grove belonged to Porirua council and the entrance half belonged to Tawa. If a street light went out you had to ring the correct council to get it fixed.

  Ohariu is the one that is gone. The southern end (Khandallah, Ngaio, Crofton Downs and Wadestown) is now in Wellington and the northern end (Johnsonville and Tawa) is now in Mana – now named Kenepuru.
  
  Otaki drops Levin but picks up Paraparaumu – hardly a radical change.
  
  I’d say that Greg O’Connor will retire at the next election and Nicola Willis will stand in Wellington Central – although in the booths of the suburbs that are moving into Wellington O’Connor narrowly won so I don’t think it will help her.

    It’ll help – National came out in front in Ohariu in the party vote in 2023. Greg O’Connor is one of the last worthwhile Labour MPs and but for him they’d have lost the seat.
    
    I don’t know if National can actually pick up the new seat but the Greens probably can’t either, given that Rongotai will be annexing Te Aro and Mount Cook.

Non-verbal Girl who turns out to be 11 with autism found on the railings of the bridge. Taken to hospital and handcuffed and given antipsychotics. Whoever reported it mis aged the girl as 20. Focus is on Police not telling ministers. Luxon expresses sympathy to the family.

But the weird bit is the girl was on the bridge railings at 6 am and her mother notifies police she is missing at 6pm?!!

Why the heck did it take 12 hours for the parent to report their extreme special needs child missing. A minor with no language and eratic behaviour that could be mistaken as psychotic wouldn’t be a child that you would let go play in the neighbourhood for 12 hours without supervision.

Seems there were many things that went wrong here.

    Chris Hipkins says Labour is not going to politicise it. Not surprising, if they did, it would blow up in their faces.
    If the Government does not offer compensation (which they most probably will), a judge would order compensation for ‘unlawful detention’ which is a ‘strict liability’ matter ie those responsible cannot claim it was a ‘mistake’ to avoid liability.

  Gangs are allowed a higher threshold of antisocial and criminal behaviour before the police will enforce the law.
  
  Meanwhile peaceful citizens, such as the KB contributor who was arrested for disturbing the peace by holding up a piece of paper, or the man in wellington who was arrested for arguing against abortion, don’t.
  
  It seems the police have plenty of power when they want to, yet they need to implement special warrants or ask for more legislation when it comes to gangs.

Yesterday we went for a drive to Ayuddaya, the previous capital of Siam until it was overrun by the Burmese forcing the centre of government to relocate down the Chao Phraya River to Bangkok.
The air was so thick with pollution we practically needed a snow plough on the car.
One of the big problems is farmers all across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos burning crops. Plus cars and street cooking and lack of wind and rain.
Cars are expensive, utes are cheap, housing is very cheap and motorbikes are very cheap.
My wife now has a constant cough. Her son and sister also had coughs when the air was really bad. I’ve escaped so far.
Apart from that it’s a great country with lovely beachs and wonderful people! In all the years I’ve been here nobody has ever told me to bugger off back to NZ or been condescending when I struggle with the local language

  While I see Nuclear as the answer to the world’s Energy problems, I would be very concerned if NZ went down that path.
  We have a history of stuffing up just about everything requiring engineering and process disciplines.
  I have no confidence our workforce could manage a Nuclear substation without taking a few shortcuts, falling asleep at the wheel, or appointing some shyster as CEO.
