Headline in Radio NZ news: “It’s pretty bad, I hate it’: Hundreds of school lunches going uneaten”. Compelling argument for discontinuing school lunches. Parents are already funded for this by the taxpayer. Why bother? I had a peanut butter sandwich for my lunch yesterday, a digestive biscuit for morning tea. (Luxury!) Add an apple and a hungry child would be ready to learn.

  On Thursday mrspdm called at an Orchard on the fringe of the Hastings city boundary, less than 5k’s from the middle of town, and for $10 got a very decent sized box of fresh fruit.
  
  Peaches, 2 types, plums including Omega and apples.
  
  I think there was something else too but we shared with our daughter and that may have gone out there.
  
  There is no reason why parents cannot provide lunches for their kids. Get on with it and stop whinging.

    There sure is a reason why parents can’t supply their kids with school lunches, the schools don’t allow it. The schools have told parents they supply the lunches and the kids aren’t allowed to take it. Don’t blame the parents. Blame the schools and the current system

      It was pretty stupid of Seymour and the coalition to get themselves into this tar pit. They should do a u-turn and go with a “parental responsibility” message. As for the mantra that kids can’t learn on an empty stomach – I call BS on that. Our son basically refused to eat lunch most of the time he went to school. Mum made literally hundreds of nutritious sandwiches and fruit that got binned, often when discovered a week later and covered in mould.

        Minorty parties moan and whine then water down good ideas and school lunches are not a good idea.
        
        Instead, school lunches should be the responsibilty of the parent, not the government.

      So what actually happens if I, for whatever reason, send my kid to school with a lunch from home?
      How can a school, teacher or politician stop me, as a parent, from providing my child with food and saying “no thanks” to the “free” lunch?
      Will my kid be excluded from school?
      Will I be fined?
      Come on, this is ridiculous.
      You can’t force parents to accept rules like this.
      Do they have monitors to go round checking that kids don’t have secret lunches in their bags?
      What happens if the pupil hides somewhere in order to eat a sandwich.
      I would like to know by what right can schools enforce this.

    Very nice people and food, run by local Maori people. I thought it was great that they had a successful business. They were certainly generous with the build your own Buddha bowl.
    
    I don’t know what they served to local kids, but unless it was very different to the cafe, it would have been fairly flash.

    I recently undertook some business studies at the local polytechnic, and Puku Ora was one of the case studies we had to write assessments about.
    Because the NZ polytechnic system is a big champion of maori wonderfulness.
    I wondered at the time, why is the polytechnic using a run of the mill local Cafe as subject matter for business students to study.

  Therefore, Luxons clever solution is to adopt climate targets then set about achieving them in a manner which benefits nz. Such as more electricity generation.
  
  I think we will see new hydro stations emerge.
  
  The clever part is the greens who would protest the fast tracked hydro dams, have snookered themselves with their cries for green energy.

    MH – So far Luxon and `clever solutions’ are not words that sit naturally together when it comes to dealing with the climate
    
    I think you also need to revise `benefits NZ’ to – at great cost ($24billion plus) to NZ taxpayers.
    
    The Greens snookered themselves? Unfortunately PM Luxon seems more likely to listen to The Greens than the Taxpayers who will have to foot these extreme costs.

      Have you read Simon Watts Budget speech …
      
      1. Climate adaptation is vital.
      2. Electrification of public transport enables nz to produce our own energy which has resilience advantages, costs less, and will help balance our trade deficit.
      3. Climate Emergency Response
      Fund has been defunded.
      4. The warmer Kiwi Homes initiative is money well sent for individuals and the country.
      
      All sounds sensible and clever to me.

        MH – you and I are never going to agree on Climate Change or, unless he changes PM Luxon.
        
        Climate change is the weather – nothing more nothing less and has always adjusted from ice age to current warmth by itself.
        
        Luxon is showing himself on a daily basis to be Jacinda Ardern mark 2. Announcement about announcements and giggles through interviews without answering the difficult, direct questions.
        
        It is lucky for the country that David Seymour and ACt as well as NZFirst Winston Peters/Shane Jones are there to get any worthwhile action at all.

        Gang members getting arrested and being sent to jail
        Crime reducing
        Education curriculum and teaching method reset.

        Levels
        New trade agreement signed
        long term infrastructure planning and building
        
        All whilst cleaning up the mess adern, Clark, and hipkins left behind, battling the public service, and taking on the DEI hire, biased, and thankfully not too clever press…

    Sorry that is rubbish. New Zealand’s climate change obligations cannot be met in a manner that benefits New Zealand. It is completely the opposite.

      My post states that maintaining a climate co2 facade protects nz against competitive disadvantage and it gives the government license to build extra hydro dams.
      
      The more cheap energy we produce in nz, the less we are victim to the price ravages and political abuse of the oil producers.
      
      Cheap energy is the key catalyst for economic growth and improving productivity.

        You’re deluded. The hydro built in the 80s cost MORE than the wholesale price is today in levelised lifetime cost. Construction costs will be multiples today of what they were then. Let’s produce hydropower at $500/MWH and then sell “cheap energy” (as you put it) at say $120/MWh. What could possibly go wrong?

    He has told you his priority is economic growth, and through Simon Watts he had told you the government doesn’t buy into the climate emergency narrative which is why they defunded the climate Emergency fund.
    
    Luxon has also told you dropping the co2 narrative will harm nz exports.

  A local body politician has offered to give me a book to read on global warming. I said I would gladly read it if he read one of mine. The conversation stopped there.

I see , tragically over 70 Christians have been cruelly slaughtered by “Islamists” , trussed up and beheaded in Congo but in their world news NZME tells us about some elephants killed in a train accident in Sri Lanka.
Likewise the rest of our media appear very silent about the sad and shocking fate of the Bibas family , when only a few months ago any action by the brave men and women of the IDF would merit front page indignation!

      You’re not going to get an easy answer to that one, probably least of all from an actual lesbian.
      It is a mistake to think that people can accurately psychoanalyze themselves or would give you accurate information about it even if they could.
      It’s another mistake to think that female homosexuality is just male homosexuality with the genders flipped. Not only are they working with very different sexual equipment but that equipment is wired right through to the base of the brain.
      One example among many, male gay hustlers, the “Midnight Cowboy” types have always been a thing, where is the lesbian equivalent?
      My general intuition here is that the gay experience is more psycho-sexual, while the lesbian experience is more psycho-social.

    Steve: The “dirtbags” are the clients. The lawyers are obliged to follow their clients’ instructions.
    
    That said, these are absurd sentences. What is doubly sad is reading between the lines about the girl in question. Not prepared to provide a victim impact statement, and the judge not prepared to order reparation be paid because of suspicions of where the money would end up after meeting her.
    
    All of which strongly suggests that this young girl has been “raised” in a gang environment to be a sexual chattel who does what the bros tell her to do. Dreadfully sad.

        Aitch: Putting it simply – no offence to you – a lawyer is obliged to follow his client’s instructions unless to do so would mislead the court.
        For example, if a client says “yeah I raped the bitch but my instructions to you are to say I didn’t” the lawyer can say “the defendant denies raping the complainant” but he can’t put the accused in the box to say “I never even met her let alobe raped her” because the lawyer knows that is false.

Given the Chinese Navy operations in the Tasman, Helen Clark’s boast of NZ living in a Benign strategic environment is ringing rather hollow.

The benefits of a couple of extra frigates and a Squadron of F16 A/B variants as a level of deterrent may be a bit more obvious now, but the worst loss is the loss of expertise in low level attack missions in an anti-maritime role. Something which our Airforce were exceptionally skilled at, and something I witnessed first hand with the A4 Skyhawks.

  I don’t think NZ gets the full implications and the message that China is sending. This is literally a shot across the bow.
  
  Being involved with international flight operations, it is highly unusual and very provocative to start live firing exercise without a lot of prior warning. Usually there is months of prior warning and it is very well documented. It also usually occurs in well known military ranges, not in random patches of international waters with no prior notice.
  
  You cannot compare this to the South China Sea as no western navies have been holding unannounced live firing exercises as part of freedom of navigation exercises. The southern region of the South China Sea isn’t China’s either.
  
  It shows that China understands the new world order emerging under Trump and will be more bold and bellegrent in future. The chances are higher that Taiwan will probably be invaded within the next 3 years.
  
  The message is clear. We can be a threat to you, distance is no barrier.

New Zealanders some day not too far away might welcome visits from Japanese aircraft-carriers, given the aggressive display in the Tasman Sea of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, a.k.a. the PLA Navy or the People’s Navy.

The Japanese Navy (officially the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force) has 26 submarines, more than 50 destroyers and frigates, but also four carriers. Initially all were called helicopter carriers, but two are now being described as light aircraft carriers.

One JN ship is in San Diego being formally converted into a light aircraft carrier. It carries the name Kaga, which was that of one of the carriers from which the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour 84 years ago. The conversion in the US includes capability for hosting F35B vertical take-off fighters.

The new Kaga seems to be of similar size to the Royal Navy’s Invincible-class light carriers that were mother ships for Harrier VTO jets and helicopters in the Falklands war.
