        Correct, Swifty. Though TBF there was for sure some work done that was not needed in hindsight. Huge complex legacy systems, not always well understood, and the Y2K impact also not well understood from the outset of the project. The enterprise I worked in did have a few overnight failures picked up in the extensive regression testing.

    “Net Zero” for humans cannot be achieved without reducing the population and going back to an agrarian way of life.
    
    [1] Net Zero is neither achievable nor desirable. The more CO2 humans produce, the more plants, grasses, moss and trees convert to O2.
    
    [2] With anti-farming, anti-livestock moves world wide and in NZ, promulgated by fake Climate Change, going back to an agrarian way of life will have mass starvation.
    
    [3] With a lot of land being bought up by the likes of Blackrock, Gates, and many others, we will be going back to being serfs and slaves.
    
    [4] I suspect that the public are not yet ready to hear that “Net Zero” is neither attainable nor desirable.
    
    [5] I suspect that Peters, NZF, and parts of National and ACT know this.
    
    Given what the Ardern govt did to the media and deep state, telling everyone the truth will be like playing “pass the live grenade”. He is right to not address it at this point. NZ has more important things to deal with right now.

Luxon’s National needs to change. John Key’s National won elections for numerous reasons. John Key was popular. Luxon is not popular. New Zealand’s economy was doing great under Key. Key’s National had numerous other parties to help keep it in power. Luxon needs both Act and NZ First to stay in power, if one falls then they all fall.

British writer (and former Labour candidate) Matthew Syed, arguing that the derision of Trump in particular and America in general will encourage it to isolationism: “Future historians will come to regard the American-led post-war age – this 80 year sweep of peace and prosperity – as the most magical in history. And the thought that worries me most? That the people of the world will come to realise this only when it’s too late.” And he argues that the West should increase its defence expenditure to 3.5% of GDP. Note that NZ’s is 1.2% and by some estimates a pathetic 0.9%. Whatever the real figure NZ is bludging off Australia and that must stop.

  This “magical” period has been built on massive debt.
  
  You can try the same thing for yourself: remortgage the house, get a few deep credit cards and have a “magical” first-class round the world trip.
  
  Eventually the credit card runs out and that magical period runs out and you will need to return to a huge credit card that needs to be paid off.
  
  USA is currently running up $3bn of extra debt a year. That is $30 per person per day. Add trickle down effects and that is more like $50 per person per day. Of course everyone can have a magical time with an extra $50 per person per day.
  
  The question is what happens when that $50 goes away. Americans are extremely entitled – living high on the hog. Readjusting to a more modest life is going to feel like hell for them.

The period of my life was relatively peaceful, notwithstanding Korea, Malaya, Kenya, civil war in Africa, Cuba, Vietnam, Hungary, Pol Pot, Yugoslavia, Iraq, multi Arabs v Israel. The author is making the point that driving the US to isolation is not in the West’s interests as we face the threat of a wider war.

      Hmm… Are we really closer to war?
      How much of that war has been provoked, or made worse, by USA meddling?
      
      As you say, sure that period was peaceful within Anglophone countries and continues to be so, but elsewhere there were many wars.
      
      One that I am familiar with (having being personally dragged into it in the 1980s) was the Angolan civil war. That was started as a USA/USSR proxy war with the USA requesting South Africa to get involved to assist them. While the USA never put boots on the ground they did put the CIA in and enabled UNITA which escalated the Angolan civil war from what would have been maybe a 5 year conflict into a conflict that lasted 27 years. Once South Africa was deeply involved, the CIA left the scene – except for drip-feeding UNITA with supplies to keep the conflict going. In many ways it continues today with civilians still being blown up by mines on almost a daily basis.
      
      The Pax Americana isn’t always what it is cracked up to be.
      
      The debt is important because that is part of what is enabling this.

I might add, she’s a stinking hypocrite too.

I’m sure she’s a supporter of MMP, and would regard lefty coalitions of Labour, Green and TPM as the best thing since sliced bread – but labels the current coalition as ‘a travesty of democracy’ and excoriates the ACT party for having been democratically elected and having the temerity to have policy positions different to hers!

Jane Kelsey is a menace – there I’ve said it. She offers us nothing but a bankrupt future and third world status.

  Swifty: I had the dubious pleasure of meeting Ms Kelsey when I was in parliament…she appeared before the law and order Select Committee to tell us what a dreadful thing the three strikes law was, and how manifold injustices would occur.
  
  I might have paid more attention if she hadn’t drawn all her examples from California, whose law was very very different from what we were proposing. And of course all of her dire predictions failed to come true.

  Several things are driving the current high price of butter.
  Generally high inflation.
  Low productivity in New Zealand resulting in a low exchange rate.
  Regulation, lowering supply of milk in New Zealand, which reduces the international pool, and increases prices.
  A lack of competition in the distribution chain.
  Climate virtue taxes on transport and manufacturing.
  Still if you compare the price with carbonated sugar water or a pack of tic-tacs, butter looks like reasonable value.

  NZ has become an expensive place to live, it’s that simple, with all the usual suspects to blame, mainly government meddling in the market, taxes and expensive regulatory compliance. It all adds up until one day you find butter is about three times the cost of a litre of petrol which itself is very expensive.
  
  You might as well say the same for fish, beef, lamb and cheese, commodities we produce in abundance and were once cheap enough for a single-income family to eat on a daily basis, but not anymore.
  
  On the topic of butter, does anyone know if it can be purchased in commercial-sized packs like 2kg or larger. I’d happily buy it to save money. I do that with whole rumps or briskets and grind my own mince adding in some beef heart and liver. Highly nutritious, better quality and cheaper by far.

  Taylor is also backing that peace of propaganda that was the school Brochure “all you need to know about the Treaty”- apparently Article ones meaning was the massive British empire was only interesting in “governing British subjects” in some place called Aotearoa (not a term used widely back in 1840).     Yabster: A gentle correction sir/madam…Aotearoa was not just “a term not widely used at the time” the treaty was signed, it wasn’t used at all.
    
    At the Kohimarama conference in 1860 – at which Maori chiefs who signed the treaty or their descendants reaffirmed their commitment to it – the term for the country was “Niu Tireni”.
    
    Aotearoa appears to have been a late 19th century adoption by pakeha historians of the time.

Oh dear, the good Professor Jane Kelsey is VERY unhappy about Seymour’s Regulatory Standards bill. And she doesn’t seem to be a fan of MMP:

Jane, don’t you remember how The Maori Party (with 3 % of the vote in the 2008 election) were able to advance their agenda by negotiating with the Nats during the Key years?

  Clearly anyone commenting on Kiwiblog is a self-selecting group of people and so are even South Africans that came to New Zealand.
  
  I do have a huge problem with the massive generalization of “white South Africans” as a single group.
  
  White South Africans could be broken into two main sub-groups based on their language:
  * Afrikaans speakers: more conservative, more racist.
  * English speakers: more liberal, less racist.
  
  Afrikaners are the majority (approx 2:1) so they controlled politics during the apartheid era.
  
  Apartheid was not a system to benefit whites. It was primarily a mechanism to benefit Afrikaners.
  
  One might also split the country North West/South East with more racist whites in the North and North West and less racist whites in the South and East. Much of that comes down to interaction with different tribal groups. Cape Town historically has very few black people (mainly Cape Coloured) and the racial antagonism between whites and coloured people was always much lower than between black people and other races. Pre-apartheid I believe Cape Town even elected a coloured mayor. All through the apartheid era, coloured people held high administrative positions in many local governments in the Cape and racial segregation was implemented in much less draconian ways (limited of course by the law of the land).
  
  During the apartheid years Coloured and white people freely went to church together in Cape Town and surrounds. The church we went to conducted illegal inter-race marriages (recognised by the church and not the state – though later ratified).
  
  All that said, white South Africans, of all languages, still managed to hold two constitutional referendums where they voluntarily relinquished power to other races: 1983 and, of course, 1992.
  
  So I would say it is a rather complex answer. Not just Yes or No.
  
  PS: I am in no way condoning apartheid or making light of it.

Hopes for a fast launch of a Māori deliberative body and unified voice with representatives from iwi, hapū and urban Māori have been dashed, with few iwi leaders showing up to a hui in Hawkes Bay on Friday.
The hui, dubbed a Wānanga-ā-Motu by hosts Ngāti Kahungunu, was the latest in a series of gatherings kicked off by the Kiingitanga with the Hui-ā-Motu at Turangawaewae at the start of last year. It was meant to follow up on work launched at a hui in May, to create a new “Whare o te Rangatiratanga” as the Māori answer to Parliament.

    My personal view is that Maori will never coalesce into a nation – tribalism is ingrained in their respective psyches, which will make it impossible for them to agree in totality.
    You only need to look at Ngapuhi, whose various iwi & hapu cannot agree on how to settle a ToW claim – & and they profess to be of the same Waka.

    Not at all… This Charitable Trust receives $$Millions from the NZ Taxpayer each year, but seems to have a problem distributing OUR charity to
    deserving beneficiaries.
    
    Its annual report for 2023-2024 says it has net assets of over $100 million (including $75 million in cash and cash equivalents) and over $20 million net annual surplus.
    
    I think it is a scam, but clearly Government Departments think otherwise…..

      If she is aware of this situation she should be sacked.
      If she is unaware, she should be sacked.

He’s a Trump hater and downs anyone who dares to suggest the lefty state of California had done anything wrong to contribute to these terrible fires, even though the wrongs are well documented and many. Going to a “fact checker” when anyone said anything he didn’t agree with. How can he be sure the “fact checker” is right? And he justifies everything he says by saying “anyway”. What the heck does that mean? I enjoyed my coffee in peace once I turned him off.

  Tim Beveridge is by far and away the best of a very mediocre bunch pulled together by ZB as replacements for their A Team who seem to have negotiated contracts that allow for them to have six week breaks over Christmas plus numerous weeks off during the year. A random survey would indicate that we are currently suffering Tim Beveridge as a sub for Hosking, a random ZB Christchurch host for Woodham, the sports jock doing the afternoon talkback and one of the political reporters filling in for Heather DPA. They are universally unsuited and ill equipped to handle their temporary roles and if I were an advertiser I would be cancelling my contract over this period.

    The Colorado River, one of the mighty rivers in the West, used to flow into the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of California.
    Because of large requirements of water in Southern California it no longer runs into that Gulf. Large dams like the Hoover dam(built in the 30’s) never fill up now because of the water demands of LA. The Hoover dam has never been full since it maiden filling in the 30’s, you can see the old water mark some 18 to 20 meters above present water mark . I am sure that the Pacific Palisades has had the greenest lawns in the whole of Southern California.
    The water crisis has been known about for at least 20 years and is really only hitting the news now.
    Newsom hasn’t been in power that long, he will say he only inherited the problem, but what happens in the next year will surely direct what happens to this Hipkins/type person.

Just read in last weekend’s “Otago Daily Times” that a Dr Matiu Ratima of the University of Otago has been awarded $1.16m to ‘research’ “the realms of personal and collective moemoea (dreams) for culturally safe authentic Tiriti-based education for all New Zealanders.”

This funding was provided by the Royal Society of New Zealand. I despair. I mean, WTF!?

I gather that LA bureaucracy is riddled with DEI appointments, which suggests to me that the ongoing fires over there would present a wonderful opportunity for them to prove their worth, and shut the petty, far-right etc. people down.
