Remember Helen Clark saying that immigrants from non traditional sources would within a generation be just like us?

The UK are finding otherwise. The practice of South Asians sending back to the old country for a spouse means that they have first generation immigration, every generation, while the practice of first cousin marriage means massively disproportionate numbers of genetic deformities in the subsequent offspring.

Note also the nervousness in the UK about even speaking about this problem, for fear of being labelled racist.

NZ is a couple of generations behind the UK in its immigration from South Asia. With our Asian population approaching 20%, there’s a risk of a huge hit to our health budget.

We need to outlaw marriage between first cousins.

They have been protected by coverup first by Labour run councils and now by the current Labour government who are refusing to hold a public enquiry into the matter.   “South Asia” usually means India.
  
  First-cousin marriage isn’t as common there as in Pakistan and the Muslim Middle East.
  
  It’s illegal in some states of India, and, according to Wikipedia, the Hindu Marriage Act makes first-cousin marriage illegal for Hindus with the exception of marriages permitted by regional custom.
  
  However, there are about 170 million Muslims in India.

    On a side note, I’ve been listening to a few Islamic speakers this morning all talking about the evils of Western imperialism – and, invariably, that all their problems, fighting, low performance etc are all the result of Western meddling – nothing to do with their own shitty practices, deep corruption, failure to create and maintain robust civic institutions etc etc.
    
    It’s funny though, not once and not ever do I hear or see them talking about Islamic imperialism that for centuries and centuries wrought death and destruction across and within the countries they invaded and put to the sword (in India’s case alone causing an estimated 150 million Indian deaths over the 330 years of Mughal rule).
    
    Quite odd too that they refer to Spain and several other countries as ‘Muslim lands’ owing to their belief that once conquered a country forever remains Muslim and it’s only a matter of time until it is returned to them.
    
    I see this remains largely unremarked upon by Westerners, we basically just shrug our shoulders and say “there they go again”.
    
    But can you just imagine if Western leaders said such things – “India was ours once and will be again” etc people around the world would be having fits!
    
    It’s quite remarkable – Islamic imperialism is the only form of imperialism that still gets a pass.

      Islamic imperialism is hardly the only form of imperialism that still gets a pass. What about Chinese imperialism?
      
      China continues to insist that everything once part of the Qing Empire still belongs to the People’s Republic of China. The fact the Qing emperors were ethnic Manchus rather than ethnic Chinese makes the territory grab all the more ridiculous. Also, the revolution that overthrew the Qing was sold by its Chinese leaders to the people of various minority nations (Mongolia, East Turkistan, Tibet etc.) as a pathway to independence.

  I think you may find that many so called marriages and the births therefrom are closer than cousins not only in the UK.
  The Health service and their long term mental problems from these arrangements are causing considerable stress on the Health services.
  They cannot be cured with a pill and the consequences are very long term over generations.
  We must be vigilent as to such as happens all over the world.
  Not unknown as Consanguinity being the correct term for this problem.
  And watch why our Mental Health budgets have exploded exponentially over recent years.

Co-governance not enough to satisfy indigenous rights declaration, Government told
A focus on tino rangatiratanga [self-determination, sovereignty, independence], which could one day see the Crown’s role significantly devolved, will shape the Government’s plan for how to recognise its obligations under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP).

Māori leaders expressed monumental ambitions during initial discussions with the Government about how to recognise the UNDRIP. Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says those discussions will shape the Government’s plan.
Cabinet has asked to receive a draft plan in June and will then release it for public consultation.

Rest peacefully Dame Tariana Turia, who passed away at Whangaehu Marae early this morning.

Although I disagreed with her on most things, she was always unfailingly pleasant, whether you were chatting to her at a meeting or in the local fish and chip shop. Everyone knew her as Aunty Tari, even after she received her damehood.

I send my sincere condolences to the Turia whānau; moe mai ra Aunty.

I see Tariana Turia has passed away.

As one of the co-founders of Te Pati Maori, I wonder what her opinion of the current crop of MPs was, prior to her passing. I know that this site will be populated with few fans of TPM in its current form, but we should acknowledge that TPM when it was formed, was actually a reasonable and constructive voice for it’s constituents.

  Not particularly high. I simply hope for the sake of the Turia whānau that TPM doesn’t try and hijack her tangi, and that their behaviour respects her immense mana among her local people.
  
  As I noted yesterday, it took significant courage for Dame Tariana to stand up to Helen Clark and Michael Cullen and to walk away from Labour. The first iteration of the Maori Party under her leadership and that of Sir Pita Sharples sought to progress Maori issues in an inclusive manner, not with the divisive rhetoric of today’s crowd.

    Of course the racist party will hijack anything to further their divisive and despicable cause. But Turia was not of a mind to help NZ to become one nation. She assisted in enabling what we have today by founding a basically racist party – I recall one speech of hers that encouraged young maori to go out and have as many babies as they could so they could outnumber non-maori. Pleasant on the outside, but I’m not so sure about the core character.

  One thing I did respect in Turia was her apparent honesty and common sense. Among other things she alone maintained that Maori were no more than 12% of the population despite increasing pressure from other Maori to represent the figure as being far higher. The odious Willie Jackson for example, who has bent the truth on countless occasions, now tries to tout it as high as 20%.

        The estimates of the deaths during the Musket Wars vary widely as you say, but in the book, Maori Wars of the Nineteenth Century, by S Percy Smith, the estimate was 80,000 – documented by the missionaries of the times. Of course today, none of these loving tribes care to remember much of that.

    I expect to see two things at her tangi: both the main Maori gangs there in force, and a significant presence of te pati Maori, both of which will be embraced.
    I would be delighted- as well as astonished – if I am wrong about the gangs.
    
    It is also worth remembering that Aunty Tari castigated those who saw 13 year old Maori girls getting pregnancy as a bad thing. According to Aunty, such disappaproval was “interfering with our fertility”

Is the Green Party of Aotearoa/New Zealand concerned about Te Pati Maori’s overt anti-corporate greed/Atlas group rhetoric?

Surely TPM is venturing into the normally fertile ground of the Green Party support base. The possibility of left bloc vote cannibalism may be of concern for Chloe.

While they obviously need to maintain an external veneer of solidarity, might Chloe quietly tell Rawiri to focus on the Maori people and leave the stuff of true conspiracy theory and anti-capitalism to her? (She could always tell Rawiri that the Greens won’t put up candidates for the Maori seats).

Then again, in his heart of hearts, could Rawiri really care less about the Green Party of Aotearoa/New Zealand and might he simply view their voters (particularly the Pakeha ones) as useful idiots?

  I thought that Green voters were typically white, university educated, ultra-liberals rather than Maori.
  
  Now some of those white, university educated, ultra-liberals do vote Maori party to assuage their white guilt, but I would think they are an exceeding small number.
  
  I would think that the majority of TPM voters are Maori on the Maori roll who are either previously Labour voters or previously didn’t bother voting.

Remember when serious events like the tragic murder of a police officer were reported with gravitas and solemnity. No longer. TVNZ reporters babble away in sentence fragments, inappropriately casual language and solecisms. They can’t even decide if something is an incident or tragedy, or worse, when there are several ‘incidences’.
To cap the sorry spectacle off we were told 34 officers have died in the line of duty and that, until the Nelson ‘incident’, Constable Hunt was number 33 but no longer! Their arithmetic is as woeful as their command of the English language.
The rapid decline of traditional media is the fault of no-one but themselves.

    How can one sentence have so many errors? The date format is incorrect for NZ which causes unnecessary confusion. The writer is actually writing that Turia had a stroke on a post on social media; was this being livestreamed? Or did Turia not like a post? Even if I put aside such interpretations (livedtreaming is common so maybe that’s not far-fetched), did Iwi Collective make the statement on 1 January 2025, did the stroke happen on that date, or both? Like any addiction, gambling addiction is a huge problem for those that have it and their families.

Like alcoholism, this is not just something that can be addressed by fiddling around the edges. If there are to be pokie machines then problem gamblers will go there. Take away the pokie machines and they will just gamble in other ways. There are numerous online gambling sites to take their money.

The very worst response is the “do something, anything” response we saw from Labour. Just add extra regulations to try to divert responsibility and make it appear that they are doing something.

Here were some of the new laws:
* staff recording twice-hourly ‘sweeps’ of their gaming rooms to check for problem gamblers,
* moving ATMs so they are in the line of sight of the main bar,
* staff mandated to ask questions once a punter makes two ATM withdrawals,
* mandatory training for all staff on dealing with problem gambling

Trying to turn bar staff into social workers does not work. Nor does trying to track ATM usage.

Is there a solution? Well there certainly isn’t a solution through more nanny-state legislation.

UK is having significant problems due to genetic problems caused in Muslim-strong areas such as Bradford.

I am not a doctor or a geneticist or anything like that, but I do have a solid grounding in mathematics and, as I understand it, occasional cousin marriage is not a problem.

What is a problem is when cousin marriage is common and occurs in generation after generation.

Consider this from just looking at the numbers. A person with no cousin marriage etc in their family tree has:
2 parents, 4 grand parents, 8 great grand parents, 16 great great grand parents etc. That’s 16 gene pools that have contributed to your genetics from those last 4 generations.

If you are the child of cousins and there are no other cousin marriages in your family then you have 3 grandparents. ie 12 gene pools at that level instead of 16. Not a huge decrease.

But if your parents were cousins and your grandparents are all cousins then you could have as few as 3 gene pools at that level (who are also likely highly inter-related).

The problem is not the cousin marriage per se. It is caused by the “compound interest” problem caused by the culture around it.

Like many countries, we see some shortages in medical staff and I wonder whether it is perhaps time to take a page from Africa’s book where such problems have been going on for a very long time.

As a UCT student in the 1980s, with a medical student girlfriend, I was aware of the UCT organisation called Students’ Health and Welfare Centre’s Organization (SHAWCO). I thought SHAWCO had started in the 1960s but had actually started in 1943 and is still going strong and has now even branched out into education.

SHAWCO mainly uses medical students to operate as first-line medics in clinics around Cape Town. They have a back up of qualified staff who they can refer to and counter-sign all prescriptions etc.

This has huge benefits for the community by giving medical services where there were none before.
It also gives huge advantage to the students in that they have already worked with real students for many years by the time they leave university. They even have students coming from Europe to get experience.

Other than SHAWCO, there are similar (often informal) operations at small clinics and hospitals throughout South Africa (and elsewhere in Africa).

Now obviously medical students can’t completely replace GPs etc, but it does seem to me that many, if not most, GP visits could be handled by students – leaving the fully trained staff to focus on more complex issues (and providing back up).

That we need to have yellow, orange or red ‘Weather Alerts’ every time there is the possibility of heavy rainfall, strong wind or higher than usual temperatures.
Who didn’t realise that heavy rainfall might mean flooded roads, strong winds result in branches off trees falling or high temperatures meant finding ways to keep cool?
