  All I can say is there must be a lot of stupid people in 2025.

Treaty changes
While thousands joined the recent Hikoi and thousands more swelled the crowds outside Parliament protesting at what are assumed to be proposed changes to the Treaty – despite the Government’s Treaty Principles Bill clause 9 stating: Nothing in this Act amends the text of the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti o Waitangi – in all this fervour, it is forgotten, possibly even wilfully so, that Labour was not just talking about changing the Treaty, but actively doing so, in 3 Waters and beyond –

A focus on tino rangatiratanga, which could one day see the Crown’s role significantly devolved, will shape the [Labour]Government’s plan for how to recognise its obligations under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP).
Māori leaders expressed monumental ambitions during initial discussions with the Government about how to recognise the UNDRIP. Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says those discussions will shape the Government’s plan.

Tino rangatiratanga is seen as self-determination, and the ultimate power of whānau and hapū to control their own affairs. The consultation document, presented to Cabinet at the start of April, described an ongoing devolution of the state and called for constitutional change that would eventually see the Crown’s power be significantly curtailed in the lives of Māori.

The UNDRIP, which New Zealand agreed to under Prime Minister John Key and Māori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples, calls for governments to recognise the self-determination of indigenous people. It says governments have a duty to protect the cultures, structures and wellbeing of indigenous communities and engage power-sharing systems with them.

        Your comment infers that only those in Africa could be indigenous and the rest colonisers which proves my point but 10,000-13,000 years (native Americans) ago is a bit different from 700 years ago (Maori). Or in the Australian Aborigines case 45-65,000 years ago.
        The fact remains the definition was changed to include ‘colonised’ land.
        Whereas Australian Aborigine’s were always described as being ‘of the land’ or as in the Definition below ‘sprung from the land’

        It is well known as part of Australian history, now confirmed by DNA, and now a subject of debate, that the Pygmies occupied Australia long before the arrival of the Aborigines. The latter having been here for perhaps 25,000 to 30,000 years. The Pygmies go back at least the 65,000 years you mention.
        
        No different to here. Evidence of previous occupation goes back tens of thousands of years. Maori oral history contained references to previous cultures here when current Maori arrived, both fair skinned and dark skinned.

        Reportage at the time of approval of UNDRIP – from New York, Beehive releases and others – shows the Treaty was to “define the bounds of New Zealand’s engagement with the aspirational elements of the Declaration.”
        That has been ignored. So it is not “we foolishly signed up to” – but the foolishness has occurred since.

    For policy makers Maori are indigenous is the first given, definitions of the word need to fit that reality. E.g. An indigenous people is any people who occupied a space before civilisation and the rule of law were established.
    In a similar fashion Israel is committing genocide and the definition of genecide is whatever Israel is doing. Other countries except Europeans cannot commit whatever genocide is.

    It needs to be said even more loudly, clearly and, above all, supported by rational argument, that even if Maoris are indigenous, as they are according to other reasonable definitions, that the general rights and freedoms of New Zealanders are defined by citizenship, not by (often partial) ancestry.
    
    On the matters raised by Yvette’s post, we have only a few days left to make submissions on the Treaty Principles Act, and two of the points I will make are that is the first opportunity for ordinary NZers to define Treaty principles and that, thanks to Parliament’s dereliction in legislation, the meaning of what is being turned into a foundational constitutional document has already been changed over the last three or so decades by a relatively small body of people with privileged access to the levers of power.

    Everybody came from somewhere once. The story of the human species is one of migration and occupying new territories in successive waves, ever since a few of the first proto-humans wandered out of the Great Rift Valley.
    
    Even the Aussie Aborigines came from somewhere else.
    
    So how long do you have to live somewhere before you’re “indigenous”? Or is it just a matter of priority?

    You’re pissing against the wind. Polynesians were the first people to settle this archipelago, and developed a distinctive culture here. Ask a Croatian or a Chinaman or an Egyptian “who are the indigenous people of New Zealand?”. Trying to “prove” that Maori are not indigenous is not a productive approach – it won’t get you anywhere. A more productive approach might be to ask: “what (if any) special rights does the indigenous status of Maori reasonably entitle them to?” The right to carry out traditional harvesting practices?? The right to receive royalties for water supplied from upland catchments on lands they own??

      The current dominant Maori arrived circa 1200 AD. Long after the Waitaha from Easter Island, Celts, Peruvians, Egyptians, Chinese, all of which at one time or another have been confirmed by DNA, Carbon dating, Oral history including that of the 100AD Maori.

The massive wave of extinctions after Polynesian settlement makes it abundantly clear that the NZ fauna had no prior exposure to the deadly predator known as Homo sapiens. Whenever and wherever humans arrive on a land mass for the first time, they devastate the “naive” fauna, especially the larger, slower-breeding animals (like moa in NZ, mammoths and giant sloths in the Americas, elephant birds in Madagascar etc). The big wave of extinctions happened about 40k ago in Australia, 11-12k ago in the Americas (when humans crossed the Bering land bridge), and only 600-700 yrs ago in NZ.
        
        The Polynesian ancestors of Maori did not “enslave, kill or eat” any other ethnicities on arriving here, simply because there was nobody here before them. They certainly weren’t shy of enslaving, killing and eating each other though.
        
        There are some good arguments against the establishment of a Maori ethnostate in NZ, so why indulge fantasies about imaginary pre-Maori inhabitants? Rants like yours make it all too easy for activists and wokesters to paint all opponents of the ethnostate agenda as deluded racist nutjobs.

      Maori arrived here around 700 years ago on their waka, as any Maori will tell you. 700 years does NOT indigenous make – they were only 300 years ahead of known European explorers – let alone some who may have been here previous but did not live to tell the tale. I have just read an article about the economy in Argentina and how the drastic actions of President Milei are sorting their economy out very quickly. He disestablished 10 of 18 ministries and stopped wasteful spending. Imagine if National et al had the courage to do that in NZ.

I’d like to see them get rid of the Ministry of women’s affairs, maori affairs, Waitangi Tribunal. I am sure there are many others that can be added and the bonus to the economy would be huge. The interesting thing about Argentina is they say that if there was a snap election in Argentina now, Milei would get re-elected in a landslide.

Sadly, we don’t have a Prime Minister with the courage to take the drastic action needed to sort this country out.

      Which we know to be complete bollocks, given Treasury recently said about 2000 public servants lost their jobs. Which would mean that MOST of the public service job losses were vacant positions.

        Be good to see a breakdown of the vacancies cancelled. If it was so easy to cancel them in the thousands were they actually needed in the first place. Or, as is way more likely, were the managers scrambling around to say Success! We met the required reductions. Yay for us!!
        
        And (sotto voce) we are kicking those thousands of cans down the road until the fuss has died down.
        
        If roles – which vacancies are, or should be – are disestablished there is a correct process to follow. A long and expensive process. But so much simpler if there is no warm body involved.
        
        Analysis should also involve Ministers asking when the vacancies were established, why, and what happens with those roles now. Because it looks remarkably like ministries trying to pull wool over the eyes of Ministers.

      “Climate” is generally (and arbitrarily) measured in 30 year blocks. So to be able to say that there is a climate ‘trend’ you would need to compare one climate block with at least two other 30 year blocks, and even then that isn’t really enough to be able to tell if the trend is simply part of some cycle or something else.
      Most of us probably haven’t been around long enough to live through two climate blocks, and even then, any changes they might have thought they’ve lived through might simply be due to natural variation.

    The polar vortex happened, and it’s like what is happening in the northern hemisphere the last few years, huge snows, and already the north has had wide spread large snow, I always thought a mini ice age starts with these type of weather events

      Remarks was lucky to open at all – without their snowmaking they wouldnt have, TC was real thin below about 1500 and was touch and go early sept to get back to the base of home basin chair, but got a couple powder days which if they were a week later or came in with a freezing level 100m higher would have shut the field down probably for the season, cardies, never got decent coverage on valley view (which they installed in the 90s because at the time it was getting lots of snow), although it was open, off the groomers was pretty sketch the whole season. Cornet was a sight, basically no natural snow around it, just this weird stretch of white where they had their snow making going – admittedly I never went up there thats just from looking up in the valley. Ohau did have a cracker of a season though and some of the old 20+ footers were down to the 10-15 range. Further north was the typical touch and go clubies in Canterbury opened in late July/early August, not unusual, but about 3 weeks after their planed opening dates, some were then shut by end of August (cheesy, craige went on and off for sept before closing, porters shut for the season first weekend of sept). MtO had their summer road to the lodge at 1600ish open for all but a couple of days after storms, access tow was real sketch the whole season, most of the season everything below the lodge was closed, which is unusually thin for them.
      
      We have definitely had worse seasons, but definitely had better as well, this was probably a below average snow year for my sking time, but not unusually low. We got a lot of weather through august coming across the Tasman higher than usual which resulted in high freezing levels, precip levels were ok, just a lot fell as rain below about 1800, which is way worse than no precip at all.

There was some discussion on this forum yesterday about sentencing for murdering policemen.
The last policeman murdered was Constable Matthew Hunt in 2020 and the murderer Eli Epida was sentenced to 27yrs
Before that was Constable Len Snee in 2009. The offender killed himself.
Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming was the first woman officer killed by criminal act.

    All at the NZ taxpayers’ expense.

Police officers often injured or sometimes killed as they carry out their duties in dealing directly with crims. Police officers run down in Nelson, deliberately targeted in this case. Not connected to the attacker. New low for NZ. Unless happened before??

What next? Crime is a political issue.

  Some reports had the police were handcuffing a man on the ground when they were first hit. So the driver may have a connection with that man. As he was caught at the scene with lots of witnesses, do we still have to refer to him as a suspect or can he just be the offender? Does not excuse the crime but may explain it. It goes without saying that drugs and/or alcohol will be involved. Be interesting to see if there is a gang connection as well.

  An undercover cop was ‘caught’ fitting a surveillance device to a vehicle, got out of it quick but was chased and shot dead (why did the offender see the need to have a gun?) Very similar sort of thing. Crim tried to argue ‘self defence’ but the Judge would not allow that issue to be put to the jury.

ACT on 20% in 2026 may happen. I suspect we are getting near to Peak Woke. The majority of citizens are decent minded with common sense. They have been cowered by the Woke and the Elites into silence. When they find their collective voice there will be a backlash and the Woke politicans who are the majority will suffer in that backlash. Voters will turn to the Party they believe is least Woke so their choice will be ACT or NZF. Whilst NZF will pick up some votes I suspect the majority of anti Woke will pick ACT.
The Nats under Luxon are followers not leaders. They cant read the room otherwise they would have moved away from Woke to ensure they retain and gain the Non-Woke voters. Time will tell but with the West moving non-Woke with the election of The Donald and the likely election of Non-Woke PMs in Canada and Australia in 2025 the move in on.

The next election is critical – if the Nats lose a large chunk of their support to ACT and/or NZF, we will see some of the changes that are needed to keep this country in the 1st world.       Our close neighbor’s wife had been doing some dry cleaning with something similar to gasoline.

  High powered laser platforms, have been around for decades, nothing new. In the mid 1970’s the USA had 100kw lasers, so one can only guess what the power is now. A portable 10kw impulse power laser was also produced back then.

This is what makes me suspicious of KDC, who apparently has had a “serious stroke” but apart from sitting in a wheelchair doesn’t seem to have been affected much.

    Same with a mini stroke Ghost. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
    I have had two and they were quite different from each other.
    No damage other than cuts, scratches, and bruises from falling down a drain inspection hole on my deck. Just a very quick blackout.
    A few others here have had strokes, they will know much more than me.

      Yeah. My neighbour had a stroke a few years ago. It’s left him with no physical signs, but damage wise he has a lot of anger issues caused by the stroke.
      
      It is really sad and pathetic to take Tariana‘s stroke and then use it as a means to attack someone else. For goodness sake the woman is not expected to recover. Leave it alone

        Dame Tariana is something of an icon around Whanganui. Her whanau has had to ask via social media for people not to visit here in hospital, which suggests to me her condition is serious.
        
        I don’t agree with much of what she espouses, but it took immense courage for her to defy Helen Clark and leave the Labour Party. The Maori Party she and Sir Pita Sharples founded is a far cry from the undisciplined rabble in Parliament now, and I suspect that will be a matter of deep regret for her. They have trampled all over the mana she and Sir Pita earned.

        Worse than that, often they can not be contained, it swings around in the Brian and damages every time it hits the wrong thing, often an elderly patient can be fine one day, sleepy and weak the next, then they wake and are bright the next, seen it with my father, and if they don’t stop quickly they finish off an older person

      After you have had a stroke when you are older, TIA’s are what finishes you off, it happened to my father, younger people like KDC will get treated and recover, but older people are waiting too die

        Mine happened about 6 years ago, G.
        I fell down the hole, took daughter and partner 30 minutes to get me out..
        Second time was on the floor in the bathroom. No ambulance but a long recovery muscle wise.
        Happy mine were mini strokes.

    My wife had a ct scan for something and they found signs she’d had an entirely unrelated stroke sometime in the past that nobody had noticed
    On the other hand my mother had a stroke one day and died the next.
    So who’s to know?

    @Ghost – I think you accidentally supported rouppe’s speculation that KDC’s stroke seems on the mild side.
    
    Recently told by a cardiologist I have a 7% chance each year of having a stroke because of heart arrythmia combined with other health conditions so did some homework. Strokes really do have a huge range of effects from the mild to the fatal. Approximately 1/4 of strokes are fatal (depending on definitions) but mild ones allow for close to full recovery. Worse strokes are much more likely to have obvious physical effects such as face drooping.
    
    I suspect the rotund German continues to game the system.

      No, what I said is you do not know what damage the stroke has done to him, all you have is a photo of the man in a wheelchair. It is insane to take that photo and determine what damage his stroke has left him with, or to even claim the stroke is fake. to do this on the back a much loved former Māori mp is wrong

An open letter to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Deputy PM Winston Peters, Hon David Shearer and Ministers Goldsmith, Mitchell and McKee

The alleged murder of Snr Sgt Lyn Fleming in Nelson yesterday has outraged millions of Kiwis. Nothing will bring Lyn back, but Kiwis will want to see justice done in an open and transparent manner.

I am proposing that the Government legislates to make the murder of a Police Officer in the commission of his or her duties an automatic Third Strike offence under the Three Strikes legislation. Judges could be given extremely limited discretion to substitute a lengthy non-parole period (a minimum of 20 years perhaps), but this could only be applied in exceptional circumstances defined by Parliament.

This would send a clear signal to offenders; if you choose to kill a Police Officer, be prepared to spend the rest of your life in prison. In sentencing the Christchurch terrorist to life imprisonment without parole Justice Mander said “Accountability, denouncement, deterrence and protection of the community must be the Court’s focus.”

Police officers protect the community in the course of their daily duties. Clearly, the public demands accountability and denouncement in sentencing, and deterrence can be achieved by making the murder of a Police Officer a Third Strike offence. I urge you to consider this and legislate accordingly.

Yesterday there was a certain amount of talk and discussion of the maths breakdown of 2025. I found that quite interesting, and it reminded me of a painting by an artist named Albrecht Durer. The painting in particular was called Melencolia 1 and in it was a square, further divided into 16 smaller squares, with the numbers 1 to 16 arranged in it.
The numbers when each line horizontally and vertically and also diagonally always equal 34.
