How the times have changed. Back in my youth, what feels like the period immediately after the signing of the treaty (but is actually post WW2) the Honours List had a seperate military section. Generals would get a CB, Brigadiers a CBE, bright majors an MBE, well-regarded NCOs a BEM, plus a few MCs and AFCs. Now just three low level medals for the military total, two for retired generals. But lots of honours for “services to Maori”. At this rate I expect some bloke who’s been the Imperial Klaxon of the KKK to get one for services to Aryans. Of course it’d be better if we didn’t have these racial awards.

  I’d be more impressed with awards for services to Maori if those services made a difference to Maori. The numbers suggest otherwise.
  
  What I’d like to see is someone, say the Maori Queen, announce that brutality to children must become a thing of the past, and that anyone involved faces the equivalent of excommunication from Maoridom.
  
  Now that would be a service to Maoridom worthy of an award.

    The Maori Queen is not announcing anything until one year after her father’s death. While it may be a noble custom, it does not exactly help Maori Royalty in my opinion. Imagine if King Charles III was bound by that sort of tradition.

  Cassandra, indeed ‘times have changed’ and now it is difficult to distinguish who the Aryan race – that ethnicity raised above all others – actually are, since their elite are part of the circumstance which leave their masses among the lowest of all social statistics – it is now much harder to work out who the KKK would support .

  Remember the ‘Yes Minister’ episode ‘Doing the Honours’? Sir Humphry gave Jim Hacker a draft list of honours for civil servants for sign-off. Jim caught Humphry off-guard when he said he would only approve honours for those Ministry chiefs who had achieved the 20% savings cuts that Jim had asked for. Apparently in Whitehall there was a quota of knighthoods, CBE’s, OBE’s etc to be awarded and they were presumably shared around based on seniority etc.

    I would say that the basis of much of what Muriel says is the desire for equality.
    Ironically, this would be of greater benefit to Maori as it is contrary to the message of the activists who tell maori in one breath that they are good for nothing, and in the next breath that they are the anointed ones.

  Honours are awarded for services to the community. The recipients have generally given much service to their communities but usually receive minor honours only. The award of these honours would often be more deserved than those of more prominent people.

  Read it properly, she has two sectors she works in an has Dunedin what I see, not just cause she is Maori, in a country where we are all supposed to be equal, then I don’t think it would be right to block Maori from these awards if we are all equal

When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.” NZ heading the same way. Too many want handouts, whether it’s Treaty related or oldies wanting their pension and health care, all wanting our neighbours to cough up. Meanwhile HMS Aotearoa is not seeing the iceberg. And not going to school or the office.

    Plenty of work out there Arty.
    
    From now until the end of May approx every Orchard and Packhouse in Hawkes Bay will be looking for capable, willing workers. Heinz/Wattie and McCains probably the same.
    
    Not sure of the exact numbers but if my memory is right there were something like 10,000 people needed last summer so I guess much the same now.
    
    The good ones will be kept on in permanent employment.
    
    Our then 18 year old grandson started as seasonal casual two years ago and now after two promotions is on about $2,000 gross a week at the moment – working about 60 hours a six day week.
    
    And loving it.

      Yes, wrt the good ones. But what about the others? Our small family business can tell some stories about taking on people from the dole.
      
      From about a dozen, one was very good and went on to an apprenticeship and is now an LBP. A few were average, and some were terrible and didn’t last long.
      
      We don’t bother any more.
      
      (WINZ not involved at all, and the people were engaged as self employed contractors on a project basis. Decent pay. Whether declared to WINZ or IRD, who knows, but they were advised of their responsibilities.)

        In the main they damage fruit or just don’t turn up after a couple of days. What is more I first hear of this in the mid 80’s so a two generational problem.

        I worked in a packhouse on the chain a few years ago, wanting to see how my fruit would be handled, and saw how easy it is to stuff the chain.
        Winz “people”, on day two, did it easily so they stuffed the chain for hours, needing resettling, and then get fire and back to Winz.
        Lunchtime older sister outside waiting to give them their canabis spiff.
        And dont touch the goldfruit seconds either, they belong to the special Kuia led people part of the packhose and are collected every evening.
        Of course for destruction.

  Cassandra: The Government taxed away my money on the understanding that they would provide me with health care and a pension…a social contract if you will.
  However I still provide my own health care but I take the pension as I consider it to be my money and which is only a small portion of that which I have paid out.

      Initially increase over some years the age of pension and ignore the crap from the few unionists who saymthey worked too hard so need it earlier, as suggested by Maori.

    Treasury predicts growth from mid next year to kick in.
    
    I have noticed a high lift in tourists around this month, nearly everyone who speaks at the counter appear to be tourists or have accents, not just Aussie, but British, European, Asian. It is very busy around at st. Clair and I suggest we may see growth quicker. I also notice when I am watching races on tv there are huge crowds and commentators suggesting larger crowds than seen for sometime, let’s not thi k this country is f…d for ever

Looking at the NY Honours List, it’s hard to see why Lydia Ko has been Damed. Sure, she’s a fine golfer and deserves all the success she’s had; and she does seem to be a nice person. But beyond that?

I also think it’s a hostage to fortune when awarding such a major honour to an active sportsperson. Better to wait for retirement, when the full body of work can be appreciated. Think Steve Smith or Hansie Cronje (not that I’m casting aspersions against Dame Lydia).

      They are not good farmers, the first year they got rid of half their stock, found out that lost them 100s of 1000s , she worked out quickly that farming is not easy and they had to restock, the o oh thing they have done is utilise every part of there products and sell the lot from farm to plate, they needed huge funds which is not that easy, they had to put in a full scale abbatoir for a start, factory equipment, and cooking facilities for making sauces and the like which are sourced on the farm, it is a simply business venture, i would suggest it should not be for farming, possibly for food production and business investment, but definitely not for farming

  The absolute epitome of this hazard was the Daming of Susan Devoy. Went on to become Race Relations Guru-ette (which whacking little balls around little boxes totally trains one for) and oversaw a great deal of damage to race relations during her years of tenure. Plus of course – the awful way the Human Rights Commission mishandled sexual harassment allegations among its own staff. She was very late to that party… but the ‘piece de resistance’ was surely her high-profile view that the demographic of New Zealanders who disagreed with her just needed to die – in her own words

    There will almost certainly be an appeal. The case is interesting in that Trump publicly denied raping Carroll and said that she was seeking attention for a book she was about to publish (and did). The jury found that Trump did not rape Carroll (she presented no evidence at any time that he did, only said he did), but then found he defamed her for denying the allegation they found not to be true.

  Many years ago I took the kids to America for a bit of a holiday. We went to a supermarket to buy some breakfast cereal and there were acres of shelf space of the stuff.
  I looked at the boxes and couldn’t believe how much sugar they contained. Typically 50%, whereas NZ the worst stuff was half that.
  My son picked out a garish colored box and insisted that was the one for him even when I pointed out it was mostly sugar.
  Next day he had one mouthful and realized the error of his ways.
  The stuff was crap, but at least it was cheap crap.

  Normally this would imply the four are Maori. They aren’t.
  
  When Red Radio stories mention Maori they usually detail their tribal links.
  
  Are Maori now using the word “their iwi” to mean New Zealanders as a whole? Or, given that the story centres on “Maori culture” at the Olympic Games, this is making the facts fit the story?

What a complete load of bullshit. You sat on this story while Joe was hiding in his basement during the last election. You sat on this story for a very long time. Joe Biden was protected by the media, by the White House doctor, by his staff, by his party, by the vice president. But now you realise that the public backlash for sitting on this story will damage you, and that you are responsible for trump being elected for not running the story and getting a better candidate than what you ended up with.

The most underreported story of 2024 was President Biden’s “obvious mental decline,” according to veteran CBS News reporter Jan Crawford, the network’s chief legal correspondent.

“Undercovered and underreported, that would be, to me, Joe Biden’s obvious cognitive decline that became undeniable in the televised debate,” Crawford said during a discussion on “Face the Nation” Sunday.

Crawford then noted that White House staffers covered it up – limiting his in-person interactions, and calling genuine videos of Biden’s stumbles “cheap fakes.”
