        If you’re referring to October 7th. 1571 , the day that the Catholic fleet of Don Juan of Austria defeated the Ottoman Empire fleet at the Battle of Lepanto, then I upticked.
        Because that was the decisive battle that broke the stranglehold that the Muslim fleets had over basically the whole Mediterranean.

  A lot of good ones there, Biscuit.
  For me the greatest conundrum, heard at a Year 9 parent/teacher evening – the teacher asked when Shakespeare would be taught in the syllabus, the reply given: “It’s not relevant.”
  Today, with the “teaching” of te reo, our children are being steered back toward primitive times. Inculcated not only with the corrupted-spelling of maorified-English, all the re-written Treaty nonsense and with all the utter crap posing as Maori science and “achievements” – that something as precious as the writings of Shakespeare can be dismissed as “non-relevant” shows how far our educational standard has sunk, thus demeaning the substance of all current-issue “qualifications” and dooming our nation’s intellectual future.

    Shakespeare and much classical literature up to 20th C literature is wholly irrelevant to life in 21st century, with colossal changes in tech and social mores making most of the antiquarian conflicts and issues at play of no more import than those found in fantasy or sci-fi fiction.
    
    It used to hold cachet as a common agreed upon corpus of knowledge that denoted membership of and gave access to ‘club’ of intellectual upper classes – with all the shibboleths contained therein. But that has evaporated over last 50 years and the last vestiges in academia exist only due to habit.
    
    And yes I have read all Shakespeare, and much C19 literature. Wonderful prose, but obsolete and useless to kids of today.

      I would say that the bard of Avon (thank goodness his father moved there from Snitterton) has much we can understand about the consistancy of humanity, the human condition and its existence.
      
      A consistancy that will not be altered by the technology that we live within.

  He earned that nickname as I recall as a ST John Ambulance volunteer in the Banks Peninsular region when he was a spritely 70 or thereabouts year old.

  The new Tauranga Council have painted a main shopping road (although most shops are empty) with so called rainbow colours crossing.
  They blame the Mahuta Commisioners, like everything else of stupidity like Maori on Committees, paid, and unelected, for approving this.
  But the real noise from the instigator group, is that there was no formal ratepayer, children attending from school, Maori function to open this phenomena.
  The one time rower, sit on fence, Mayor did not attend and open it, and no powhiri and blessing took place.

No drooping face, able to securely hold a child on your lap…?

  My 84 year old wife had a stroke after orthopaedic Hospital hip surgery, whilst in recovery suite.
  Helivac immediately from Tauranga Hospital to Auckland at 6am and four hours brain operation.
  Six months ago now – she will, and our lives, will never be the same after 60 plus years of marriage, as she very weak in her left side and as such cven with walker and walking stick.
  Unbabalced is the worse position as I am full time with some assiatance, as full time cargiver – and I am no good either at my age.
  Left face was bad but improved in time.
  It is not just physical either as age does not help anyway – for either.
  Thank God for the wonderful people in our Health Service – they have all been wonderful.

    Paulus, 60 years of marriage is bloody marvelous!! My parents made it beyond 60, and I remember talking to my dad at their 60th anniversary. He was well on the way with Parkinsons, and mum had more than early signs of dementia. He said, no matter what happens, keep a smile on your dial, your life will be better for it. And he did until the day he died.

    84 she is doing well. Strokes, I don’t know, I have had two TIAs (transient ischemic attack) Bang, fell down a hole on my spa/BBQ deck to check if spa was emptying.
    Knocked around a bit, 30 min to get me out.
    Age gets us all Paulus. Still fit and active but not like I was at 50.
    Time for you and your wife to enjoy life – please do.

    I definitely think he’d fake it, or at least exaggerate the consequences.
    
    I can sit in a wheelchair too. That means nothing. Seen too many people turn up in court with a neck brace they put on 30 minutes beforehand .

        For some it is paid public holidays.
        Christmas + Boxing Day. New Year’s Day, + 1 day.
        Then Easter, Waitangi Day, Anniversary Days, My birthday – yes I was paid for my birthday!

Merry Christmas to the Lucky Old Sun, which as, the song says, rolls around heaven all day …

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is close to the Sun right now on its latest orbit.

Scientists won’t know before Saturday NZ time how successful the approach has been — how it’s endured 1400deg C. Saturday’s when there will be another “beacon tone” transmission.

The spacecraft gradually orbits closer to the Sun’s surface. Launched in 2018, it’s orbited the Sun 21 times. It gets ever nearer as it uses the gravitational pull.

The craft flew through the Sun’s upper atmosphere — the corona, three years ago.

Having a great day. Only blight on it is seeing a photo of Dotcom on the front of the herald website. Is that really the best they could come up with for Xmas day. I didn’t think they could reach new lows but they have. That guy is the last person I want to see first thing on Xmas day. So glad I finally cancelled my sub to that rag.

Here is a question.
If in 10 years time, so we’ll into a fourth term, we were still looking at Luxon as too much talk and not enough action.. Would we want to kick him out?
I say no way.
In the last year they have started to control spending, started to correct Health, Education and Justice. Green lit a lot of major roading projects and pushed the Fast Track legislation thru with its 149 projects.
For me it’s a pretty damm good first 12 months.
More more more of the same.. And if Luxon needs to be a bit waffley on the radio now and again.. It’s a minor thing.

  I don’t think people realise how close we are to having a labour government again. There are enough problems that if still facing the country next election, and they will be, they will take more than one term to deal with. The left could easily turn the centre vote back to the left. One of the levers the right need to pull next election is to show the country what a labour government will look like with the Māori party.

I’ve had the laziest Xmas (cooking/organisation) in the last 45 years…

Admittedly I’ve got pretty savvy over the years and have learnt how to minimise unnecessary effort and just concentrate on the bare essentials to ensure we have a tasty lunch and enough left-overs to last for a couple of meals.

One of my (few) regrets in life is that I didn’t establish control of my family Xmas early in my married life… I spent the first 20 years or so spending Xmas day with the in-law family/step-family…

Too late to undo anything, but now that my father is dead and my brothers’ kids are adults, I wish I’d spent some Xmases with them when my children were young.
