Remember how the last (mis)government was using the UK model to explain why the Maorification of water management had to be done? Wasn’t Thames Water their named model?
Well, in what will be no surprise to Kiwiblog readers, things haven’t gone that well there. To quote Guido “ Water regulator Ofwat has just announced that water bills in England and Wales will go up by an average of £31 per year for the next half decade. An average of 36% above inflation by 2030…
That’s higher than the 21% average the regulator indicated it would go for earlier in the year. Some suppliers have been allowed to raise bills higher – its 53% for Southern, or an extra £222 per year. Defra Secretary Steve Reed says in response the “the public are right to be angry” about the water industry in general and promises change from Labour. At the same time beleaguered Thames Water has been handed a £18.2 million fine for breaking dividend payment rules. Incidentally the firm was pushing hard for a 53% increase in water bills to stay afloat – it was granted 35%…”
Yet another bullet NZ voters dodged from the change last election. Yet another of their societal transformations where they demonstrated the reverse Midas touch. Note how Thames Water wanted prices to go up for their dividend payments. That may be what attracted Labour to the stupid idea.
Has any media tackled Mr Hipkins as to whether they are still going for 3 Waters as a policy? Though we know Labour lies so he will deny it and we would be none the wiser.

    Um it’s completely NOT socialist. It’s the polar opposite. You do realise that Thames water was 100% privatised in 1989 – zero public ownership.
    
    As of July 2023, the company listed its shareholders as: OMERS (32%), the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS – 20%), Infinity Investments (a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority) (10%), British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (9%), Hermes Investment Management (manager of the BT Pension Scheme) (9%), the China Investment Corporation (9%), Queensland Investment Corporation (5%), Aquila GP Inc. (5%), and Stichting Pensioenfonds Zorg en Welzijn (2%).
    
    Which is not at all what 3 waters proposed. That still involved public ownership, not privatisation. Well done CJames for pointing out what a disaster neo-liberal privatisation has been for the UK water industry.

You’d probably label me a conspiracy theorist, right?

Well here we have a report from the Daily Mail that Biden was senile from day 1, that people were coaching him through the most basic of public appearances and that his aides were making the decisions behind the scenes!

So once again a conspiracy theory turned out to be the truth. He was senile from day 1!
How did reporters not notice this? How did no one find this out earlier?
You have reporters in America who work for the major news outlets whose literal job it is to report on the president of the United States! Why did no-one report this?

They didn’t report it because either they didn’t know. Which is terrible because it’s their literal job to report on the president.

Or they didn’t want to know. They didn’t want to know because if they reported it the news would damage the Democrat party and lift up the president’s likely opponent in the next election, Donald Trump.

Either way, and I favour the second option as the most likely, it’s a stunning dereliction of duty by the legacy media.
If the incoming administration cleared out the entire briefing room of reporters and replaced them with podcasters that would be a good thing. Maybe the public would be better informed?

    I agree. Hiding that the president is non compos mentis for 4 years is criminal. A conspiracy involving hundreds of white house staff who effectively committed a coup and ran the executive branch as an unelected regency.
    
    Can a senile president pass legally binding executive orders, pardons etc? Might we see it tested in supreme court? 2025 is going to be interesting.
    
    Many of those involved will have pre-emptive pardons or be covered by privilege requiring impeachment made impossible by insufficient republican senate majority. But there are some serious constitutional issues in play that need fixing.

  The only people “surprised” by this are readers of the MSM – and given how obvious Biden’s problems were even back in 2019 I’d bet they’re not “surprised” either. They just decided to lie for five years.
  
  Hell, I’d been tracking the prick’s decline since 2019 over at No Minister. Here’s what I wrote about him in May 2019 as the Democrat nomination process began to kick off, Hey, where the white men at?:
  
  Biden is a hopeless, brainless old hack. A two-time loser in these nomination races. A swamp-creature buried in Washington D.C. politics for almost fifty years since first being elected to the US Senate in 1972. A gaffe-prone, 76-year old politician so dumb that in the 1988 nomination race he plagiarised the speeches of the almost equally hopeless British Labour leader, Neil Kinnock. A man with private and public behaviours that are distinctly disturbing in the age of #MeToo. And now a man who is showing clear signs of rapid mental decline since just 2018, when he gave that now infamous little spiel at the Council on Foreign Relations about pressuring the Ukrainian government to fire the prosecutor looking into the Burisma Gas company on which his son, Hunter Biden, had a cushy Director’s position.

    Tom Hunter – that was a great column in 2019. You absolutely nailed it!
    The interesting thing is that Biden was seen as a return to normalcy, he would calm the waters and people could take a deep breath after the “chaos” of the Trump years.
    
    We now have to consider that Biden didn’t actually make the decisions. He opened the border, inflation skyrocketed and crime went through the roof. Abortion without any restrictions and all things transgender became a hallmark of his presidency.
    
    But I guess the question is – did he know what he was saying, did he understand the executive orders and bills he was signing into law? I would say probably not?

  Seymour continues to bravely face the opposition to his Treaty Bill and welcomes open debate.
  
  No one has yet formed a logical argument against his position and won the argument.
  
  Peters come close with his “there are no Treaty Principles, just delete the Treaty from all legislation”. But that fails to stop non-legislated Treaty Principles BS continuing to be pushed in schools, universities, public organisations, etc.
  
  The ONLY way to get some resolution is the hard way – a full public referendum after endless public debate. If that ‘ends in tears’ then so be it.
  
  Ignoring it and pretending we are all ‘United’ will at some point blow up and the tears will turn into something worse.
  
  Go Seymour – keep up the hard work taking on the nutters and the pretenders.

        The way I see it – government spending cuts were requested at a broad-ish brush level, following on from similar in the previous government’s dying days. Some quite strange things happened, like new jobs created late last year, they and others advertised and then vacancies cancelled to meet the requested cuts.
        
        And many staffers were offered voluntary or not so voluntary redundancy and took it. Why not, especially if getting on in years and service?
        
        Both of those examples make little difference to short term savings, but saving are about to start delivering. And costs are much more than sales and payouts.
        
        We keep hearing about line-by-line scrutiny of budgets, initiatives and outcomes. That ought to result in more swingeing cuts. Let’s see what happens in the 2025 Budget. If it is timid, I’ll withdraw and apologise.

  Waitangi Day should mean nothing to about 81% of New Zealanders. Maori have made it clear the view the Treaty as between them and the Crown, and it’s a day on which they can grandstand, engage in performative displays, and heap abuse on the government. It is a weeping sore, an exercise in division, a day of angst and sadness for most. It is most definitely not ‘the reason we are allowed to be here’. Europeans were coming here whether the rag-tag bands of natives liked it or not. As to British governance, it could be done the nice way or by cannon shot.

  In the eyes of this system, at what point does a baby become a human life that should be cared for?
  
  A baby born at 6 months gestation is clearly a viable human being as witnessed by being able to last 2 hours outside of its mother’s body after being set aside to die. Sure it needs a bit of help, but so what: plenty of people need help?
  
  Should the same logic be applied to people who neglect their children? Nah, we don’t want this two year olds any more – let’s dump him in the bin and if he can’t fend for themselves that’s not my problem.
  
  So what is the distinction? Why should the first be considered a brave mother asserting her rights to abortion and the second be considered child abuse/ manslaughter?

      Yet the very same Establishment , so wedded and invested in this aspect of “woman’s rights” are more than prepared to trample those same women’s rights when it comes to the insanity of certain men now claiming to be women.     There are sufficient circumstances where an abortion would be a reasonable step, that banning abortion cannot be considered.
    
    But own what you are doing. Killing an unborn child. Coming up with a legislative definition – 20 weeks in nz (used to be 13) – to say its more a tumour than a human is just closing your eyes, covering your ears and singing lalala.
    
    In the example above, the baby was 24 weeks, which is still allowed, thanks to Jacinda, with some extra checks and balances. We don’t know the circumstances, notably
    
    (ii) the woman’s—
    (A) physical health; and
    (B) mental health; and
    (C) overall well-being; and
    (iii) the gestational age of the fetus.
    
    but listening to the interview the procedure was listed as a “social termination”. That’s certainly leaving it very late, and after the usual 20 week scan to make sure the baby is healthy.

  Somewhere along the line there is a transition from an annoying blob of cells to a bonny bouncing baby.
  
  Where that line is is different for different people and there is a judgement call.
  
  While we probably can’t all agree where that is, I think we can put some markers along the way that we can all agree on.
  
  A premature baby is generally considered viable after 24 weeks of gestation. Various information suggests that the chance of survival is between 60 and 70 percent with no likely long term health consequences.
  
  Thus I would say 24 weeks is definitely in the baby camp.
  
  At the other end of the spectrum we can probably all agree that sperm and ova are not yet a baby.
  
  As soon as they combine into a zygote the grey area starts.
  
  For me, I’d say that once it has implanted in the uterus and has the cells start to differentiate into different tissue types and the organs are starting to develop (around 3 weeks) we have a baby.
  
  From that point, I think people who are trying to have a baby would feel they lost a baby rather than just failed to conceive.
  
  Thus, for me, the definition of an abortion should be somewhere between when the zygote implants (about 6 days) and the three week mark. Before implant it is a bunch of cells (allowing for morning after pills not being considered abortion). After implant (6 days in), we’re talking abortion. After 3 weeks it’s a serious matter of killing a baby that is starting to form.
  
  Of course I don’t demand that others share my opinions.

    I always thought that we would get to this stage and the sheeple would finally wake up to the scam of Global Boiling and renewables. But the idiots on the left seem to be digging deeper.
    
    I can not see how Europe and the UK survives the multiple crises they are now facing. They are all connected of course and none of the below can be turned around IMO;
    – Climate Scam/Energy shortage
    – Sovereign Debt defaults
    – Mass Immigration/Ethnic terrorism
    – Woke culture wars
    – Project Ukraine scam leading to major European war with Russia
    – Ageing population/Low Birth rates
    – Trump Tariffs/Trade war with China
    
    At some point, panic will set in and there will be massive capital flight out of Europe, most likely into the US (where else can it go?)

The Tertiary Education Union hates the idea of protection for free speech and academic freedom at NZ universities. In the past some unions have done very good things to improve working conditions in factories, mines etc. Even now, US unions are battling to force that odious hypocrite Jeff Bezos to improve working conditions at Amazon’s so-called “Fulfillment Centres” (and yes yes I know unions also did a lot of damage in NZ and Britain during the 1970s). But nowadays most unions seem to be focused on what they call “social justice”. As the wonderfully self-righteous “weka” insisted shortly before banning me from The Standard, “unions are social justice organizations”. I resigned from the TEU last year, the last straw being their adoption of a co-governance model with “tangata whenua” and “tangata tiriti” co-leaders.

  They don’t like him, he has to realise that and learn to not care.

  Bob Jones in a book on travel years ago said that tourists were safe visiting countries with right wing governments / dictatorship. They value tourists and visitors so much that the police will deal decisively with anyone who attacks or steals from tourists.
  Possibly NZ thinks that visitors should have travel insurance so investigating crimes against visitors is low priority. But the emotional and other cost to the visitor is just as or more significant than the monetary loss, not to mention the hassle of having to arrange replacement passports possibly requiring travel to and waiting times to the nearest consul.

    Just the violation of having a burglar scratch through your undies is really enough to turn a wonderful holiday into an unpleasant experience (equally so for a homeowner who has been burgled by criminal scum).
    
    That the police just dropped the ball makes it far worse. So does the fact that the police, and courts, do not take burglary seriously.
    
    “Our police often are stretched because there is a lot of crime and where they can respond quickly, I know that they want to.”
    
    Perhaps they should ask why there is a lot of crime in Rotorua. Perhaps it is because they are letting crime flourish. Get ruthless with the bastards and step on their necks!
    
    Clearly that contradicts what the mayor is saying:
    “Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell said the couple’s break-in experience was disappointing and not the “expected or usual experience visitors have in Rotorua”.”
    
    Unfortunately it seems she is wrong.
    
    I think that all tourists are generally reasonable and expect that that thefts will occasionally happen. What they do not expect is the cops attitude of not caring.
    
    People, not just tourists, should have the feeling that the police are protecting the law abiding and their possessions. They should not feel powerless in the face of criminality.
    
    At one stage NZ had an image of a friendly, care-free paradise. That image is long gone.

The 8 year old boy murdered in the Bay of Plenty had the name Rickahshae, an apparent play on the word ‘ricochet’. It would be interesting to see if this name, with its oblique reference to guns and violence, had been deemed as acceptable by Internal Affairs. Poor bloody little blighter, seemingly killed by those who should have been loving and protecting him.

  Reading of the historic injuries endured by many of these children, brain bleeds, badly knitted bone breaks, organ damage etc, it seems that death was a relief.
  Imagine knowing that you are going to be severely beaten every day. Imagine that terror.
  And knowing that no one is coming to help you.
  Evil exists, these children are proof.
  In a normal society the evil scum would be dispatched by the neighbours.

The Gene Technology Bill

They pre-empt the findings of phase two of the royal commission which has yet to examine the safety of Covid-19 vaccines produced via gene editing.

It empowers the minister to make health decisions affecting all Kiwis on the say-so of foreign gene regulators of his choice.

The bill is being passed under Fast Track legislation designed to prevent public discussion of its controversial provisions and adequate understanding of its impact by MPs. There is no time-sensitive need for this.

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa this month opened Hawaiki, a $20 million-plus 24-unit papa kāinga sold exclusively to hapū members, where homes can only be onsold to about 7000 registered whānau members.
Would any other ethnicity/race be allowed to do this? Will gang affiliates be allowed to purchase (then the mob move in like they do in Kaianga Ora housing)??

A Christchurch-Invercargill passenger train is being revived for a few days next year, and it will appeal to rail junkies.

Having endured the trip as a kid, it appeals as much as a wooden-seat train journey to penal camp relics in the Siberian Arctic.

Would the trip revive Invercargill’s claim to having the southernmost passenger station in the world, as has been suggested?

There’s a railway station for an 8km historic tourist line at Ushuaia, Patagonia. It’s 54.80 deg south. Invercargill’s 46.40 deg south.

We NZ’ers usually overlook Patagonia, which has mountains and lakes eerily similar to those of the South Island. Probably pushed apart by tectonic plate shift aeons ago.
