Mixed feelings on this one. 19 years in an Indonesian jail is no fun, & IIRC that they were arrested in Bali rather than in Australia was down to a tipoff from the Australian Police. I doubt they’d have done 19 years if arrested in Aus.

But, the misery caused by heroin addiction is not accounted for here. And, I strongly object to the ‘Bali Nine’ moniker. These guys were not unjustly arrested & imprisoned like the Birmingham Six. The title was down to the media looking to imply that the Bali Nine were also unfairly treated by the Chinese Indonesian authorities, which is a lie.

Tenancy law is important as the sector is huge and impacts so many. Changes to tenancy law have passed Third Reading. Stephanie Snedden, senior associate at Buddle Findlay specialising in commercial and residential real estate law, said the Government had characterised the collection of changes as both sensible and tenant friendly, but that might not be the case … “However, it is arguable that, whilst in theory these changes should be beneficial for tenants, some of these changes could give landlords increased power. In particular, the reintroduction of no cause evictions could be seen as creating housing insecurity for low-income tenants and could contribute to increasing homelessness,” she said.

No cause? There is always a cause. Maybe not a great one in some opinions. The current causes to terminate a tenancy are extremely restrictive and highly prescriptive so selection of applicants leans heavily towards risk assessment. Landlords don’t end tenancies for good tenants unless they have to.

I expect to see an increase in terminations soon. Noted that retaliatory terminations (after tenants pursue their rights) are to be extended in favour of tenants.

Also note than almost all applications to the Tenancy Tribunal by landlords include rent arrears. Some in the $thousands. Advocates and journalists never seem to mention any of that.

  Yup, good tenants are like gold. Nobody throws them out unless there is an extremely good reason.
  
  Like with so many things in society, bad tenants get subsidised by everyone else.

    Same with getting rid of an employee. It is an expensive, difficult thing for an business. It disrupts productivity, inconveniences customers, costs money in recruitment, loses production during training – the downsides are endless. No business gets rid of an employee lightly and it will keep a bad one longer than it should due to the costs of a change.
    People claiming that businesses throw away employees lightly have no idea and certainly never offered NZ the service of employing staff.

  Laughably Stuffs headline “how the changes might affect you”. As if low income tenants read the news….. lol.
  And secondly, wait for Labour and Greens to squeal. Landlords want to throw tenants out for damaging the place (that landlords often have to pick up most of the tab for), yet Labour put losers in motels, which they wreck. And the taxpayer picks up the tab.

    It’s easy enough to get a favourable ruling at the Tenancy Tribunal if you are a landlord who has suffered property damage. Getting the dollars awarded to you is a whole other matter….up to you to chase it, which can be expensive, and sometimes even dangerous.

The burghers of Thames seem to have a new hobby – bitching that the price of fuel is around 3 to 6 cents higher that 25km away in Ngatea. How do they think the fuel gets to them?

OK, let’s say it is 5 cents a litre difference and the people of Thames average 30km per day in a vehicle using 8l/100km. That’s 210km per week and 17 litres of fuel per week.
Extra cost: 85 cents per week.

The local social worker is saying this is restricting people’s ability to get out and socialise. I call bullshit. Less than a dollar a week is not going to impact anyone’s life.

We see a similar thing in USA. Various news sites are claiming that many more people are driving to holidays because petrol prices are about 20 cents per gallon cheaper than a year ago. Really? Let’s say your car is a very unimpressive 25 miles/gallon and your holiday trip is to family 250 miles away – round trip 500 miles. That’s going to be 20 gallons of petrol. $4 cheaper than last year.
Is $4 really going to move the needle on making a 500 mile round trip and all the other costs associated with a holiday? I call bullshit on that too.

  To be fair, a lot of it is less about reality then the ‘vibe’. When you have a year of rising fuel prices and people complaining, it makes sense you might say ‘lets stay at home and save some money this year’. Conversly now that prices have come back people might say ‘we stayed at home last year, lets travel’.

Announcement that Ngati Toa has bought 71 schools in the Hutt Valley. Much info about the cultural benefits to the tribe but no mention of the price. Was there one? Did the tribe actually buy the land or did it simply receive a gift?

    IIRC the previous owner Govt doesn’t pay rates on any of it’s properties either. Which 1. means that across NZ this is another hidden tax on all other ratepayers & 2. if Ngati Toa are exempt from these rates because now “Maori Land” all other ratepayers are subsidising them.

  * Purchased for $1 down.
  * 0% loan from the government (aka taxpayer).
  * Leasing it back to the government (aka taxpayer) for a substantial amount, yielding a substantial profit.
  * Zero tax.
  * NZ corruption perception index does not budge.
