It is a revalation to hear a politician who is eloquent, cliche free and thoughtful – admits her faults and does not talk in soundbites. She is very strong on free speech – a massive plus, and anti-bureacratic power. Her life experiences are definitely not those of a political nepobaby and explain her views on issues.
She has the potential to be another Margaret Thatcher, one of her heroines. Her putdown of Angela Raynor was so much in her character. A massive contrast to Starmer the Farmer Harmer.

    Starmer’s support doesn’t matter. He has a huge majority gifted to him by Reform, and has taken the Ardernist view that it wasn’t lucky but was in fact a mandate for the entire grab bag of marxist bullshit.
    
    He has 5 years to “transform” the British economy and society, and by God he will take it. His mandate will last until year 3.5 when the new MPs start to get scared of losing their seats. It will be too late by then.
    
    We need to appreciate that these Marxists mean absolutely everything they say. They really believe conservatives are evil. They really believe that the economy is a zero sum game. They really believe that immigration and diversity are only opposed by right-wing bigots and extremists; and, they really believe there is a climate emergency.
    
    Buckle up, its going to be a bumpy ride. Starmer is Trudeau without the personal charisma (//S). A small-minded control freak who is going to “improve” society, if it kills it.

      Agree – with one additional piece of information. Starmer and Labour will do all this on the back of institutional foundations laid by the “Conservatives” over the previous fifteen years.
      
      Crime, “hate speech”, policing, mass immigration, climate change, alternative energy and Net Zero, excessive spending and taxation,…. You name it, the Tories set the scene.
      
      As such I have no time for Righties who get angry at conservative voters for failing to support them in 2024, leading to this looming catastrophe, because this was always going to happen sooner or later, in which case it might as well be sooner so that Britain can perhaps Milei its way out of the wreckage (Argentina achieves first budget surplus in 123 years).

        I think you are entirely correct. To be fair, Blair set this in motion and started the ratchet turning. The conservatives did nothing to wind it back, and allowed it to accelerate driven by the blob.
        
        Exactly the same in NZ – the day Key left WFF in place as an “entitlement” you knew that National are just labour with better administrative skills…. and here we are. Herald today – Northland charity, Stand Tū Māia, to take Oranga Tamariki to court after $63m funding terminated for vulnerable kids

Oranga Tamariki might have reasons for removing taxpayer funding. Not just for this organisation. Maybe to do with achievement of contracted outcomes, overlap with other service providers, value for money in a tight economic environment.

According to the article, this Northland organisation has 230 children under their services and 40 staff.

Maybe there is a case relating to the contract’s legality, and if it gets to court both contract parties will plead their cause.

  NZ journalists never fail to disappoint. Heather dp Allen and others bemoaning the government for giving us an update on the ferry acquisition. Aren’t nz journalists clever enough to even understand a project update will not contain any commercially sensitive info…. that will be revealed later.
  
  Then HPDA goes on to inform the government they will be better off purchasing the useless ferries sourced by Labour then on selling them.
  
  HPDA struggles to provide facts based objective articles (ie do her job), it’s amazing she has the temerity to claim she has a better financial analysis of the governments ferry options.

  A similar thing happened during the John Key government. An organisation lost a contact which the Salvation Army gained and the organisation successfully sued for the retention of the contract (inappropriate judicial activism in my opinion).
  Some organisations seem to be inefficient in the services they provide with taxpayers money and seem to be excessively staffed and put inappropriate effort into lobbying, astroturfing, etc and even worse.
  So when called to account they will sue to try and protect their turf.

  I’d say terminate the contract shut it down and start a fraud investigation. This outfit have 240 ‘clients’ and 40 staff with funding for 500,000 for each staff member…..I get that they don’t get paid all of that money as salaries but it sounds like an awful lot. Then they have some of their clients as children living in houses by themselves and going to the neighbours for food, nice achievement…kids living on beaches? Excellent. I think we will find there is more to this story. Sounds like more of a rort than a charity helping battling families. On average each of their staff have to do something with around one family ‘per day’ (it actually six clients per staff member). Doesn’t sounds like a lot of work going on here. Imagine a lawyer with six clients….even if all of the clients were constantly committing crimes and being caught the lawyer would still have so much time on their hands they would be bored.

  It costs $870 to register a large motorcycle now according to the Post, I wouldn’t know, I used to keep a number of MCs registered for occasional road use, but no longer.
  Interesting that a cyclist who is a much higher risk, holds up traffic, and gets hundreds of millions spent on special lanes that again congest traffic, pays no ACC levy.

      An electric bike might actually be a good alternative. That said, they can be very dangerous. When biking along at about 20kph on my push bike (on a shared pedistrian / cycle way) I often have grannies on ebike zoom past. With no sound or warning it can be quick scary.

        Ordinary pushbikes can be dangerous to unwary pedestrians too. I got bowled by a kid speeding down the footpath as I walked out of a shop doorway. Being knocked to the ground by a pushbike is actually quite a shock, not to mention the scrapes and bruises.

Congratulations to recently elected Tauranga Council who have just voted, against overwhelming opposition, to allow a Maori – unknown, to three top Council Committees, with full rights and pay as we understand.
I expect they will blame the Mahuta Commissioners for the decisions they left fhem.
So Mayor Drysdale, and Councillors Scoular, Baker, Schuler, Taylor and Morris should watch the next elections sadly not for a while as arranged.
You will get the DCMonday, as the population are overwhelming against this Maori involvement again.
You knew this when 7ou put out your voting crap and ignored anything towards it.
To say that I am annoyed that the will of the electorate is again ignored.

    There is national legislation, unfortunately, it states that all local councils MUST consult with local Iwi to make decisions. Most local councils interpret this as “put some unelected Maoris on committees and give them voting rights”.

  I don’t understand their rationale at all. Maori, Maori tribes and any other person, community organization have access to any Council and any councilor. And any landowner the same. Tribes and sub-tribes are merely landowners the same as anyone else. Council is required to consult with landowners on any matter that affects their land, irrespective of whether they’re Maori or not. It’s the same with central government. Apart from the superfluous Maori seats which were to be abolished when universal suffrage came along, there’s no requirement to have specific Maori representation let alone voting in parliament. Why is a local authority a special case.

Fonterra is switching boilers off coal at its Clandeboye, South Canterbury, factory.

Forty-four days ago, Fonterra announced a conversion at another big factory — Edendale, in Southland. It described the new boilder there as “electrode”. That is an electricity-heated boiler.

Edendale is on the vast lignite (brown coal) field in Southland. It’s shallow and easily mined (a tractor and front end loader would do at some small lignite pits).

So much lignite lies under Southland that it could generate all of NZ’s electricity for four or five centuries.

It’s weird that Fonterra can be ashamed of using that resource.

  Changing from coal, a carbon sink from trees and other organic matter formed over a long time frame, to wood pellets, a carbon sink from trees formed over a not so long time frame.
  
  By the way, I have some forestry partnerships being harvested next year. I put $6500 in up front, and annual costs that have added up to about $5000 over 28 years. Hard to tell since kiwibank don’t allow transaction searches longer than 2 years.
  
  They’re estimating a $17000 payout.
  
  Based on that my return is less than 3%pa. Shit investment.

Chinese carbon credit scams …

Germany is being ripped for bogus carbon-saving projects in China.

Since 2020, oil companies working in Germany can invest in carbon-saving projects in other countries. The facilities need to be new. In return they get carbon credits they can offset against their obligations to reduce emissions in Germany.

Under the scheme, 66 projects have been approved in China, with a total market value of $NZ3.6 billion.

Rorts include 16 existing projects falsely getting millions for supposedly new projects.

Some projects don’t exist, and one project proved to be an apartment building.

Every day at lunch time my wife gives me a rundown of the important news from Thailand
As best as I can tell here are some of the important bits.
A year ago there was a dispute between a policeman and a teacher over the ownership of a winning $1.5mil lottery ticket (10 houses similar to ours). The policeman won and the teacher went to prison for a year.
A woman died and left her stepdaughter a ton of money. A distant relative appeared out of the woodwork, claimed the will hadn’t been correctly witnessed and said they should have the dosh.
A wealthy French businesswoman with no dependents who’d made her money over many years in Thailand left the majority to her housekeeper and committed suicide.
She didn’t trust her own family to invest the money so hired a lawyer. He ripped her off.
Then someone in the government determined the Frenchwoman hadn’t correctly set up the businesses and they took the money.
I asked my wife what was the outcome? Don’t know; that was two weeks ago and everyone’s lost interest
The PM, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who is not an elected MP and completely new to politics, except her father and aunt were also PMs, is 38yo and is constantly criticizing for the clothes she wears and how she doesn’t grovel enough in front of Royalty
Hug the king over there and you’ll never see the light of day again.

I did an OIA to Pharmac about Te Ropu. Chair Bennet disestablished them. I was curious about what work, if any that they did. Bennet was right to get rid of them as it looks like they did no work and were just a talk-fest group. I wonder what they cost us. Here’s the edited OIA response:

You requested: Written formal output from the Māori advisory committee Te Rōpū to Pharmac from the time of establishing Te Rōpū to 30 September 2024.

Te Rōpū was not instructed to provide this level of detail. As the role Te Rōpū reviewed and provided expert strategic Māori advice. As your request is for formal reports it is refused under section 18(e) of the Act, as the documents alleged to contain the information requested do not exist. However, I have provided some background information on the role of Te Rōpū.

Background information on Te Rōpū Te Pātaka Whaioranga – Pharmac Māori Advisory Group, Te Rōpū, was established in
September 2021 to provide strategic direction and guidance on a broad range of kaupapa
relating to Pharmac’s work. This advisory group aimed to support the Pharmac Board and senior leadership team in fulfilling Pharmac’s commitment to achieving the best health
outcomes for Māori. Te Rōpū provided expert strategic Māori advice on the following:

Supporting and advocating for kaimahi Māori
• Reviewing and contributing to strategic documents (Statement of Performance
Expectations / Statement of Intent, Te Tiriti and the Equity Policy, People, and
Capability strategy)
• Working on a strategic partnership with the Board
• Working on Māori equity health outcomes with Health Economists, Therapeutic
Group Managers, analysts and medical devices team.

Te Rōpū ensured Pharmac’s commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi by understanding
and supporting whānau Māori to achieve optimal health and wellbeing through access to,
and use of, medicines and medical devices. This commitment involved input into key
organisational policies, governance of projects, clinical strategies, and overall strategic
direction. Additionally, joint decision-making in line with Te Tiriti partnership was agreed upon with Māori for initiatives stated in Te Whaioranga(Māori Responsiveness Strategy). Pharmac also sought operational Māori advice to guide its strategic direction. Te Rōpū held their inaugural meeting on 30 September 2021, with a term of 18 months. The Terms of Reference enable the approach, membership, and focus, and how it works
both for Pharmac and for Māori to be reviewed before an ongoing mechanism for Māori advice input and partnership is established. This timeframe was to enable the team to make any changes needed, before putting in place a long-term mechanism for Māori engagement and partnership with Pharmac.

I just googled “BNZ Australia coal” and this is the first thing that popped up…
“The Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) has committed to ending new lending to coal mining and exiting thermal coal mining by the end of 2025 and all remaining coal mining by the end of 2030. BNZ is also working to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Here are some of the other actions BNZ is taking to reduce its environmental impact:
Setting targets
BNZ has set emissions reduction targets for its priority sectors, including coal mining, oil and gas, power generation, and dairy.”

Don’t think BNZ is going to stop at wrecking petrol stations – dairy is squarely in its sights too.
