Remember how a cornerstone of the late but unlamented Three Waters takeover was it would be financed using the Thames Water model? And there were those green bonds paying for it all. Well, Thames Water has gone belly up because unsustainable losses, and will either go in a firesale or have to be bailed out by UK government.

Another bullet dodged by the change in government. Yet the aging student politicians’ incompetence still gets rewarded – they are still there unrepentant– no apologies or even a policy change. Lake Onslow is still on their wishlist. Though “firm” policies are worthless as Starmer shows by smashing the records on breaking election promises. No doubt Willie and a resurrected Nanaia (proof zombies can’t be killed?) will bring Maori nationalism back if they ever get near the levers of power again. Wait to see who gets rolled by Mt Roskill’s Napoleon just before next election. Is it Zimbabwe, Cuba or Venezuela that they emulate?

Why is there never any accountability for leftwing politicians – are half the electorate really that stupid? Is it proof of the quote Churchill never made “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”.? But the university academics, MSM and the like who are the left’s cheerleaders have consistently shown themselves to be dumber and more incompetent than the “ignorant” masses they despise. Dunning Kruger writ large.

  I can’t believe people paint Luxons excellent ‘big organization’ management skills and experience in a negative light.
  
  Don’t they realize Luxon had to pick and promote people from within a defeated and dispirited party? Don’t people realize that organizing a bunch of MPs who weren’t chosen by Luxon, but handed to him by the public is very diffiult management task?
  
  Don’t people realize that like all good managers, Luxon has a multifaceted and complex plan which not only sets a path to get things done (pls review the regularly updated quarterly plans to see how much progress has Been made – when have you ever seen such transparent purposeful actons from our government before?) but also has built management of political complexities into the plan (Maori relationships and international climate commitments to name two)?
  
  Luxon is doing an excellent job despite the lies told to you by NZs despicable media.
  
  And last but not least a question to the detractors, what is the better realistic alternative?

      Steve, it is sooo easy to pick single issues and criticize, I notice you didn’t answer my question about a realistic alternative.
      
      Maori relationships are complex and nuanced. A lot of changes have already been made to reverse the ridiculous Maori policies aderns government used to enrich the Maori kings family (Maori people went backwards over those 6 years). Working with good Maori organisations gets results, and sends the right signals to Maori people.
      
      Smashing all the Maori initiatives will result in more hikois and eventually violence.

        a major push for separate rule and equality well and truly undermioned .

      Steve – if Luxon is a Maori activist then he’s not doing a very good job of it. Under his govt, 3 waters gone, Maori health authority gone. Agreement with NZ First to take references to the Treaty of Waitangi out of the legislation.
      
      Now yes things have not moved as quickly as we might like. However don’t forget there are a lot of woke public servants and the liberal elite and media are totally on board with Maori radicalism.
      
      So I think Luxon has done a good job. He speaks softly but he’s held the coalition together and they are every day moving NZ in the right direction. Just the other day the gang patch ban and immediate prosecution of gang offenders. Luxon is doing a lot right IMHO.

      In my words, REALISTICALLY, NZ’s best option is a National-led Government.
      
      BUT…..That is very different from NZ’s BEST Option, which, IMO is NOT a National-led Government.
      
      What I mean by that is, NZ will never vote in a truly free-market, Libertarian Government like Argentina have done, not in my lifetime anyway. But that is the BEST option for NZ to thrive (IMO).
      
      So, Yes, I will continue to criticise Luxon. He is obviously better than Labour, Greens, and The Maori Apartheid Party……but that just means he appears as a Giant among Pygmies. We could so much better…….but right now, as a country, we don’t deserve any better (we are that pharked!)

One-dimensional thinkers might describe both the Muldoon govt and the Lange-Douglas govt as “centrist”. Interesting that with all the failures this government is having to answer for, no mention is ever made of who was actually responsible. There may be a vague reference to ‘the previous government’ but never any names or even a whispered ‘Labour’. Heaven forbid that Arden, Hipkins, Robertson, Verrall etc are ever mentioned by name.
Just about everything Luxon etc are dealing with involves cleaning up yet another Labour mess but it’s almost as if they have been airbrushed out of the memory of RNZ and TVNZ.
Luxon is roundly criticised by the media for daring to lay the blame on their princess and conveniently forget that up until their last gasp Labour was blaming nine years of neglect.

  Pay attention to the language of TVNZ and RNZ and what is left out.
  1. “ZeroSolar went bust under this government, and the government is on the hook for $200m.” A casual viewer would not realise the contract was driven by the Labour government.
  2. “A boy who was part of National’s controversial boot camp has died. There have been calls to stop the boot camps.” Next day we find out he was involved in a traffic accident unrelated to the boot camp.
  3. “Auckland Transport fares will increase because of the current government. The AT Gold Hop card will still guarantee free travel for seniors”. The implication is that AT is providing the free travel; no mention of taxpayers or being a NZ First policy.
  
  I think TVNZ and RNZ have gone full Democrat partisan media. They truly believe they are heroes of the resistance.

    President Elect Trump’s first transition in 2016 was a mess because it was a surprise to all and was run largely by existing Obama staffers. They managed to convince Trump that under the Logan Act of 1799 that he could not negotiate with foreign powers. Under the Logan Act only the current President (or designate) could represent US in talks with foreign governments.
    
    As a result, Trump arrived at inauguration unprepared.
    
    This time around, his transition team has been working for 12 months out of sight of the DC administration. They were privately funded so the DC administration had limited visibility of their efforts

      Their job is to administer the law. If the government does not like what they do the government can repeal the Act. I have made this point repeatedly to Chuck. He seems to think that there will be a different result with new Commissioners. The current ones seem perfectly competent.

  The Commissioners are the board. Rod Carr is the Chairman of the board, not the CEO. The CEO is Jo Hendy (sister of Shaun Hendy). Crown Entity CEOs are appointed by the board (the commissioners) for fixed term contracts. You could probably find out via an internet search when Jo’s term is up.

The Māori Development Minister is hopeful the authors of a draft United Nations’ Declaration Plan will have a proposal he can take to Cabinet when he meets with them on Friday.

In June a first draft was delivered to Jackson, but the minister never took it to Cabinet for consideration because he knew his colleagues wouldn’t support it.

The CEO of the largest health insurance company in America was assasinated in New York a couple of days ago. While the motive is thus far unclear words written on the bullet casings seem to indicate a loathing for the industry the victim represents
It seems health insurance is expensive over there and when it’s most needed the companies will do their best to weasel out of their obligations
Here in NZ it is obvious to me the public is being readied for partial privatization of our health system. Starting with ACC or maybe elective surgery

  We already have it. There are two streams of health in NZ. Those who cant afford private healthcare fall back to public and often join long queues. Those that can afford it pay twice (public and private) for the privilege of skipping queues when they need elective surgery. I had a hernia years ago and my doctor said It might be up to two years before I could be seen but I should be thankful as if I was older it might never get done. He then said, do you have insurance, I said yes and got my operation within a week! It was just before Christmas so I was very happy.

    Something similar happened to Mum. She needed cataracts removed, but due to the wait time went private — same bloke as it happened.
    Trouble was on the big day he was crook and she was reassigned to a date beyond when she was originally due to have the work done by him at the public hospital.
    I think she paid about eight grand, but she figured she had the money and someone else who didn’t got their op a bit earlier

    Additional heart issues identified over a year ago. Already had a heart attack and bypass. Had a couple of tests and now waiting months on an outpatient treatment that is unlikely to be the end of the process. I expect will be 2 years or so before I get the actual treatment I need. Will help the wait list numbers if I die during the wait. I suspect they’re gaming the system in that by seeing me every 3-6 months or so they get to reset the clock on the waitlist time. Thus, even though the end to end time is likely to run in to years that is not reflected in the stats.
    
    On a side note they seem to have managed to lose the results of some of the tests anyway!
    
    Checked my SX insurance. Yes I can get treated but I need to go back to step 1 and get referred by GP, then off to specialist etc etc. Started that process. Looks like even with resetting the clock will be loads faster than our current system. I get to see a specialist within a month and that includes the Xmas break.
    
    To be fair when my condition was immediately life threatening I was treated very quickly and well but the moment one has a risky but not necessarily immediately life threatening condition the system grinds to a halt.
    
    We do underpay doctors and nurses and we have a poorly organised health system. Countries with better health systems tend to have dedicated health levies/taxes and mechanisms to encourage private health as well as better pay for health professionals.

    It’s even harder when your employer uses an ACC accredited provider. It’s another layer of obfuscation between you and what you may be able to claim.
    
    That collapsed lung I mentioned yesterday came with 14 rib breaks down one side. I was off work for 3 months.
    
    I will say I was financially well looked after. 80% salary from ACC, and the other 20% by way of sick leave.
    
    But they wanted me back at work as soon as I could walk further than 100m (which took some time, due to having to expel blood from inside that lung). Working in a bank while on regular morphine didn’t seem to be a problem.
    
    Just as well I wanted to get back on my feet anyway…

      After second neck vertebrae fusion ACC just stopped funding so I took them to Court. They paid out plus interest just before the Court.

  Health insurance is not just expensive in USA – it is a complete racket.
  
  The price sheets bear little relation to the costs of delivering services or the prices that the health insurance companies pay. It is a system that pretty much forces people into getting health insurance.
  
  So for example, procedure X might cost $5k to do. The price you would pay as a private individual (or gets reported to the customers) might be $20k and the actual price that the medical insurance company pays might only $7k.
  
  Similar things happen with medicines.
  
  This massively differential pricing leads to extreme gouging and you can understand why some people might resort to violence when they are denied treatment.
  
  We are not 100% immune to this here, though it is a lesser problem. I was recently quoted $200-ish for a radiography procedure as a private consultation. I then found it was covered under Southern Cross and the price came down to $160-ish.

    Agree. And even if you can pay for it, the system is still dysfunctional, sometimes the wait times for private specialists are several months as well.
    The nail in the coffin was the covid lockdowns. In order to prevent the health system becoming overwhelmed, all elective and non-urgent surgeries were cancelled for months on end. This resulted in the very scenario they were trying to prevent. An overloaded health system that couldn’t cope with the huge backlog that was created.

      Just before Covid, the Christchurch cardiology people were very proud of having brought all their waiting times down to close to zero.
      After Covid the cardiologist I spoke with was ready to chew his own arm off. He said he thought it would take at least 2 years to get back on track again.

    I would strongly disagree. We have a very functional health system. Sure it could always be better, but there is no end for people’s wants.
    
    In 2020 I became a heart patient for the first time. I was admitted into the cardiology ward with atrial fibrillation. I got the treatment I needed. Sure, my cardioversion (where they defib you to restart your heart at the proper speed) got bumped twice due to operating theatre shortages – resulting in an extra week end stay in hospital. But it was definitely adequate.
    
    In 2022, I had a repeat episode – admitted at 2 am or so, cardioversion done around noon then out of the hospital by 5.
    
    Certainly some surgery gets delayed, and they are short staffed. However I think a lot of the problem is due to ballooning expectation and demand.
    
    30 years ago hip replacements were not common. Now there are people who have had multiple.

      Without going into quite some extensive detail of medical treatment for me and my wife we have nothing but total praise for the treatments we both have and are reciving.
      We don’t really know how luck we have been when compared to such as the UK, Australia and the USA.
      Of course it can be improved, but not for us, overnight..

      I disagree. May be in the life threatening situations there’s still some capacity.
      But not all needs are life threatening. I had to wait for 2 years for MRI scan, followed by another 6 months wait for a follow up appointment. That was my last encounter with the public health sector. I’m fortunate that I can pay for these things. Many New Zealanders are not in this position. In my case it was so called “elective” surgery, although I’m not sure what was “elective” about it as I couldn’t function without it and I certainly didn’t “elect” to have it done.
      And it makes me wonder, what happens to all the money that goes into funding all this?

  Apparently he was a prick who ran a company that had the highest claim refusal rate in the industry, about 33%. The highest in the industry.
  This led to many people going bankrupt to get medical treatment, or dying.
  40% of US bankruptcies are due to health bills.
  He was also being investigated for insider trading.
  I don’t agree with him being murdered, but if it leads to life saving changes in the industry then I won’t grieve that he has put himself on the wrong side of the only ledger that counts.

Yet we still have them being reported as unfairly treated victims by numerous sources.

    The patched gang members are only around 9000, I would say their impact is actually very high compared to their numbers. And then there is all the other crime they generate as people try to fund their drug habits, prospects try to earn their patches etc. the damage to society through crime direct and indirect, unreported crime and transnational crime through their links to international cartels for example is huge.

      On top of that there are likely thousands of wannabe associates who are committing crimes within a gang context.

  I was at Milford Sound last month. Lots of people from all over the world having a good time. Ditto in Queenstown, at Punakaiki & various other tourist traps across the South Island. What they had in common: no large, facially tattooed men on Harleys.
  
  I got to thinking how restricted their lives must be. They can’t go on holidays like normal people, can’t go & have a nice meal & a bottle of wine at a Marlborough vineyard, even stop & buy a punnet of cherries at a roadside stall. I mean, sure they can, no one’s banning them. But they’re trapped by parental choice and early life decisions. It’s sad, really.

There’s now talk in Wellington of demolishing the Michael Fowler Centre because of supposed earthquake risks – never mind it’s stood through several already.

Got me thinking. The things that Wellington Council want to or are demolishing include the City To Sea Bridge, the Michael Fowler Centre, the Begonia House and the Library. These are all structures that are or were used regularly. They have stood through several earthquakes. There is no plan to replace them with anything. Well the library has a plan but given the fubar with the Town Hall who knows.

The structures they want protected from demolition include the Dixon St flats, the Gordon Wilson flats, and that old rusty tank in Mirimar. They are all empty and disused. They have owners who want to replace the structures on the site.

Interesting that they are intent on destroying structures they control, but keep structures they don’t, resulting in costs to the actual owners.

It’s like the Greens and Labour City Council are in an alternate dimension, where up is down, day is night and their only purpose is to destroy the city.

The Town Hall fiasco is a disgrace. The application of NBS is a scam with “standards” – ie the goalposts – changing every year.

    Their reasoning is that they’ve been assessed as vulnerable based on nbs so the only choices are repair, demolish or demolish and replace.
    
    They say the first and last options are too expensive so the only option is demolish.
    
    Maybe it’s them behaving like 12 year olds who have been scolded in the past so are getting their own back. Never mind the consequences.
    
    Several of them could have a “hold fire” option. Bridge and mfc are perfectly functional. Just do routine maintenance and leave it alone, unless there is an actual failure of a critical piece. At the moment it’s just a possible outcome of an event that might not even happen in our lifetime.

      The staff didn’t read their own reports and they didn’t read the peer review by Dunning Thornton either. First they insisted on an Importance Level 3 categorisation which is indefensibly stupid for a footbridge. Then they insisted the bridge was at risk of collapse – if you read the geotech report you saw that liquefaction assessment tools predicted liquefaction settlement and lateral spread for an earthquake with the parameters of the Kaikoura event – that demonstrably didn’t happen, making all predictions about the effect of an IL3 earthquake worthless. Given that is no serious prospect of soil failure at that part of the waterfront the actual capacity of the structure comes down to performance of the members under seismic loading and from that point of view there was nothing to worry about.
      
      And the councillors were even worse – none of the baboons who voted for demolition even pretended they’d read the reports or engaged with the issue in any way. Sarah Free in particular said she trusted the advice of staff – that’s what we have at local government. Useless lumps who are happy to show up and vote the way the staff tell them and can’t even be arsed reading documents.
      
      Commissioner now and forever – it’s not worth trying to reform local government under the current legislative regime, not in Wellington or anywhere else.

The 29-second clip of one NZ’s few folk songs is performed on tubas by members of the Boston Crusaders, an American youth music group.

With NeverMindtheBollocks‘ blessing I might add my observations – this week for example I’ve seen one bike there, on one day, with the rest of the time completely empty of bikes.

I’d add that it’s a bloody flash bike rack. Very flash.

Academia is pushing truth seekers out and unless a mechanism to correct for this corrupting ‘unicorns and rainbows’ fantasy promoting tendency can be developed it is irredeemable.

The “bootcamp” is turning into a bit of a disaster with one of the original 10 dead (a car accident – likely just coincidental) and another 2 run away.

In reality it was set up to fail. A real bootcamp needs to be run along military lines with military law and discipline. This half-baked mess with OT social workers really is not going to be as effective and discredits the entire concept.

Perhaps that is the real goal here – deliberately stuff it up so that they can just say:”See, told you it wouldn’t work”.

  Is 3/10 really a disaster, given the previous offending records of those on the programme.
  
  They were mostly repeat serious, and often violent, offenders.
  
  More importantly, though, what’s the alternative, short of indefinite imprisonment?

  The basic flaw in the current scheme is that the young repeat offenders are being returned back into the same environment where they learnt & practised their offending behaviour.
  
  A 12 weeks’ stay in a safe, secure, supportive environment is not time enough for most young folk to build the inner resilience needed to withstand the corrupting influence, neglect or violence of their homelife.

      Yes, there is continuing input..a 9 month transition phase back into the community….. hence Labour & Greens trying to get a big hit on the programme today…as we learn 2 of the boot-camp “graduates” are on the run from O.T. and their home placement.

‘A Biden administration appointee agreed to a new contract with a government employee union that will allow tens of thousands of bureaucrats to work remotely for years ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, according to Bloomberg News.

Recently-departed Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Martin O’Malley signed off on a new deal last week with the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) — which represents about 42,000 SSA employees — that will extend remote work availability into 2029, according to Bloomberg News. The incoming Trump administration and the newly-minted Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), are poised to target work-from-home policies for government employees as part of a broader push to rein in the federal government and eliminate bureaucratic bloat.

The agreement will effectively allow SSA employees to maintain their current levels of remote work through Trump’s term, according to Bloomberg News, which learned of the deal before its public announcement. Currently, SSA employees are required to be in the office between two and five days each week depending on what their specific job is’.
The Dems may think this is a smart move to derail Trump’s plans but employers have ways around this tactic starting with re-applying for positions in a ‘reshuffle’.

She was being a bit imprecise. She correctly stated the Labour green fund did not directly invest in ZeroSolar. Actually, the fund just bought $100m of solar panels and gave them to ZeroSolar to use.

– why did the owner not insure it ?
