This revealed the hikoi as less about opposing David Seymour’s Treaty Principles Bill and more about Te Pāti Māori’s recruitment drive. Orchestrated by party leaders and staff, the effort leveraged fear to rally supporters, urging Māori to join the roll, boosting Māori electorates at the expense of general seats—a calculated, constitutional move for political influence.

  I think it overlooks the importance of the Party Vote and the huge Overhang 20 Maori Seats would cause irrespective of whether the Maori Party, Labour or some other party won them.

  When I hear Luxon saying that the ToW principles are settled so there is no need for a debate, I wish a so-called journo would ask him this simple question:
  ‘If the TOW principles are settled, why do the three opposition parties state that Māori did not cede sovereignty and the three government parties state that they did. Isn’t the question of sovereignty a fairly significant issue about which there is widespread disagreement?’

    It does, as you indicate Malc, raise a little problem that 57 of 122 Members of Parliament hold the view that sovereignty was not ceded and therefore shouldn’t be there in a whiteperson’s House, and in fact, to keep their bums on their seats, should be supporting a bill which says Government has the right to govern – right?

Like many people in the community I’m happy about what this government is doing to reverse the Labour agenda and put NZ on a much better path.

This week the gang patch ban came into effect. And on the radio the news came across that police had made many subsequent gang related arrests!

What a wonderful change from the previous administration who paid gangs to hold drug education and rehabilitation courses. The very gangs who were supplying the drugs were being paid to provide education and rehabilitation services to solve the problem they were in fact causing!

Fortunately we have a sensible govt in place, ably led by Luxon, who are cracking down on law and order and dealing with the drug dealers. Great stuff! 😎

  He seems dead keen on a Partnership or Co Governance deal with Maori Activists which is not what was voted for on 17 October 2023.

    This week Luxon announced the gang patch ban. In his first 100 days Luxon got rid of the Maori health authority and 3 waters. Luxon and Peters have pledged to get rid of the references to the Treaty of Waitangi out of legislation. Unless directly relevant.
    
    Luxon has been calm and sensible and moderate. He has not stirred up the radical activist opposition. He has ably led the coalition that has repealed almost the entire labour agenda.
    
    NZ is on a much better track. This govt has surpassed my expectations especially given the hostile media and the wokeness of much of the electorate. Luxon has done a sterling job IMHO.

      Yet he will not endorse a bill that says:
      
      1. The elected Government has the right to Govern and make and pass laws.
      2. Is a bit of a problem because as written may leave the door open for Partnership and variations of Co Governance.
      3. Everyone is equal before the law and is entitled to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination.
      
      It is disconcerting that he describes 1 & 3 as simplistic when they should be core aspects of any Government.

        pdm – what we are seeing is MMP in action. National is the centrist party being calm and moderate and appealing to middle NZ. While Act are the more radical activists on the right. NZ First are doing a good job pushing back at the Maori party.
        
        National has pledged to remove references to the Treaty of Waitangi from the legislation. That’s a different approach but it’s not wrong.

      Seymour on the Platform yesterday with Michael Laws . 30 odd acts under review . Excluded are ToW Act , Public Finance Act and SOE Act will not even be considered for the review .

    God she was dreadful. Perfectly fine as a high school student council co-president but so very far out of her depth in the adult world where her naive decisions negatively affected almost every productive person in New Zealand. Her cute “Captain’s call” did irreparable damage to our economy and future growth.
    I hope those of you who voted Green and or Labour are proud of what you did to our country.
    We will be living with the consequences of Ardern, Robertson et al for a very, very long time.

  Banning patches is not the answer, any more than banning mums and dads from wearing RCR T-shirts in public or their favourite band t-Shirt.
  
  Scott, rather than a ban on patches per se, put conditions of people on benefits, that they turn up for 8 hours a day for training or looking for work. Dressed in appropriate attire. No turn up, no social welfare.
  
  Gangs only get to parade their patches because they either live off the state, or live off the proceeds of crime, and have no legal work to attend.
  
  Clamp down on crime, and clamp down on social welfare, and they will be too occupied to be out in public.
  
  Same with the junior ram raiders. If they are in school or work, and have to get to work by 7am, they won’t have time to be out raiding at 3am.
  
  And these ram raiders should have the full extent of the law thrown at them.
  
  Then they, and their gang members cab wear “prison patches”, while working on the “road gangs”, filling pot holes and the like.

    Jack rabbit, while I don’t disagree with your ideas on law and order, I believe banning gang patches was an important step.
    Under the previous government patched gang members were blocking roads and even taking over small towns with impunity. The were visible and threatening.
    
    This measure drastically lowers gang visibility and the consequent breakdown of law and order.

This kind of breathless reporting is why I don’t trust the impending doom reports by anti vaxers. The actual percentage of the population affected is vanishingly small, could be a statistical anomaly, could in fact be due to the effects of covid infection.
I know I personally react badly to flu vaccinations, and I’m even more sceptical of the efficacy of various covid vaccinations than I am of anti vax claims but it would be nice to cut out the scaremongering.
People will continue to die of covid, of the flu, of reactions to vaccines, of tripping on their carpet, but no, we aren’t going to be drowned under 200km of sea rising because we don’t pay enough tax, we aren’t going to be burnt up by UV because we sprayed a spider nest, and as long as we get government under control we’re likely to continue to enjoy a standard of living better than our ancestors ever dreamed.

  It is bullshit. The only reliable data studies are large scale studies. The gold standard study in the UK recently covered tens of millions of people who had suffered cardiac events since 2021. Those who had received the COVID vaccine had statistically significantly lower cardiac events than the unvaccinated. Those who had received boosters had commensurately lower adverse cardiac events.

  The reasons are pretty simple. Severe covid disease can cause myocarditis. However, a larger risk from severe covid is “hyper coagulation”.

  I have a medical condition that can mean that hyper coagulation is quickly fatal. Hence why I do not want to contract severe covid.

  That’s why the raw data must be open source.

    Rodney Hide – totally agree. How many people do I know that have died of covid? Not one. I don’t know personally one person who died of covid. I know one person who got very sick with covid but she was over 65 and had many other medical problems.
    
    On the other hand I personally know people who have got very sick because of the jab and have had serious side effects.
    
    Out of 100 people that got the jab how many had serious side effects? I’d really like to know?

    There is a key point that is often overlooked. On a population basis it may be that the vaccine reduced harm overall. If the vaccine injuries were less harmful than Covid injuries in the absence of vaccine then there is a net benefit at the population level. The ethical problem is that at an individual level it is unlikely that those who suffered vaccine injuries would have otherwise suffered Covid injuries. They are (mostly) going to be different groups of people. The political philosophy underlying compulsory vaccination was clearly not one that favoured the rights of the individual. If people had a genuine choice then they could accept the consequences of their own decisions.

    Rodney, I don’t think transparency will illuminate the issue much, I believe the data is bad, all of it.
    There’s sufficient anecdotal evidence that enough medical professionals refused to record medical events that happened after vaccinations as vaccine related to cast doubts on studies such as those Benedict cites.
    The whole covid travesty has the hallmarks of a mass hysteria event, and it’s fun to speculate that it was a CCP psyop, complete with fake video of people dropping dead on the street, and TikTok algorithms to spread panic.
    The denial of human rights by the Ardern government was indefensible.
    I personally won’t take the vaccine, and the original basis of that decision, that Ardern was mandating it still provides a good evidence against. (I also followed the whole course of the epidemic and vaccine development closely.

A single car being stolen by some teenagers is sufficiently remarkable that it deserved a feature article in the newspaper. 😄 So many police descended on the crime scene that the teenagers were quickly captured.

The car had been left unlocked with the keys in the car. Apparantly this is not unusual. I recently read another article about a guy stole belongings from 56 unlocked cars in Singapore over a single night. His punishment.. Five years in prison.

In the Pacific in WW2, pilots had a challenge finding the way back to the mother aircraft carrier, a moving “air strip” in the vast Pacific.

To pilots flying high the carrier could look to be the size of a packet of cigarettes.

You needed to find it before your fuel ran out. That would mean crash landing in the sea, and just a hope of being picked up.

This was a problem for American air crews in the inter-carrier battles and in patrols. It was a problem for Japanese Navy pilots, too.

  No. The first thing I noticed is that one of the editors is Jennifer Marohasy. She produces absolute junk. Her data analysis on global temperature change is so bad it is embarrassing. She has been grifting in this space for a decade.
  
  So no the last thing I would like to see is for our climate change minister to be distracted by this junk. I would much rather see him focused on the impoverishment caused by New Zealand policies.
  
  As we get closer to 2030 there will, and there should not be, any debate about whether “climate change is real”. It is, but if it is not, New Zealand will make no impact on that debate.
  
  What can we control? Our own destiny, driven by our own climate change policies. We are about to hand over between 10 and 20 billion to dodgy foreign governments to meet our Paris Accord commitments. These commitments were all voluntary. Nobody forced us. They were made by James Shaw and Jacinda and cheered on by Chris Luxon. It is this madness that should be our focus. The last thing we want to do is get side tracked by stupid Jennifer Marohasy. 😩

    Also, are there positive things about increased CO2 and a little warming? More CO2 means plants grow faster. A little warming means fewer people die from extreme heat.

      I just don’t know what you are expecting to achieve in New Zealand. You are only going to turn public opinion by pointing out the futility and stupidity of our climate change policies. I would much rather influence that debate than get involved with snake oil scientists who peddle nonsense. Getting involved in such debates will achieve nothing in New Zealand.

Ireland is in a pickle. Being the home of many data centres, the accelerating demand for electricity driven by AI queries is threatening the stability of its grid.

Last year, data centers consumed 21 percent of all Irish metered electricity, surpassing urban residential consumption.

Of course, the Irish grid is connected to the UK & from thence to Europe. Here in NZ, our grid is not connected to anywhere else. It makes you wonder about where the leccie for the new Auckland Microsoft and Amazon data centres is going to come from.

  It would seem that the Irish electricity system is in a similar situation to what the NZ system was before Rogernomics. Basically anyone setting up a new industry etc could sign up for a new connection and the main electricity utility (generally backed by the Government) would produce the goods. A nation keen to attract industrial investment would see such an arrangement as a positive way to attract investment. The downside is the Government directly (or via possible imposts on all customers) is having to take the investment risk, particularly if there is over-investment in generation. This is why the NZ government decided that it did not want to shoulder this risk, and that private enterprise was better placed to shoulder the risk. So in NZ any prospective major customer (ie not domestic, small farming, small business) needs to negotiate a supply contract with one of the retailers (in practice limited to one of the four ‘gentailers’) for a supply of electricity for making widgets, running a data centre etc. This could require guarantees or even cash up front so the appropriate generation can be allocated. The alternative is to be a spot price bottom feeder (which Electric Kiwi and similar are) which may be OK if the customer can readily reduce demand on the occasions the spot price goes through the roof. Rod Drury (ex XERO) was nosing around data centres and quickly realised that securing electricity supplies for new or increased data centres was a major issue. He suggested the system needed to be ‘reformed’ presumably to shift the risk from the customer to the supplier. Then there was the opposite situation in Soviet Russia where major industries like steelworks had to build their own power stations and transmission to ensure a supply of electricity.

    I believe Microsoft NZ has signed a long term deal with Manawa Energy, in part so they can boast that their data centre is carbon neutral, but also to secure the electricity.

Donald Trump might soon put a brake on Ireland’s economic boom of booms.

Ireland’s 15 per cent company tax rate has attracted companies from America and Europe to base headquarters in Ireland.

The tax flow has pushed the Irish Republic’s GDP per capita to fourth in the world, compared with the USA at 14th (NZ is 44th).

Trump said he would cut the American corporate tax rate for companies that make products in the U.S. to 15 per cent, matching Ireland’s.

The Wall Street Journal reports three big foreign companies made up 43 per cent of Irish corporation tax receipts in 2022. Just under a thousand American companies employ about 15 per cent of the Irish work force.

Together, the businesses and their employees may contribute as much as three-fifths of the Irish Government’s tax take.

John posted a link yesterday showing a young woman’s social media attempt to explain why ACT’s Treaty Principle Bill is wrong/racist/repressive/insert expletive here etc.

It appeared to be a mixture of facts with opinions, exaggeration and misinformation etc.

But this is how people protesting the TPB/David Seymour sees things, making them “right” and Seymour “wrong” (and a lot worse).

Whilst this may be symptomatic of the young of today that relies on social media for their cues, as well as older disaffected Maori/Pakeha activists and protester followers … this also applies to people that are in a position to know better i.e. Labour (and Green and TPM) MP’s.

Long story short now …

David Seymour is a “thinker”, he is a smart man who appears to think matters through/considers before acting.

(He doesn’t blurt out on a whim, unlike Labour’s useless MP’s that are always in the news, for example, like Jackson, Andersen, Verrall and a number of others).

Suggestion to Seymour/ACT (and National and NZF) is to lead the information charge.

Go talk to Tribal leadership, engage and understand what matters most to them (and their concerns).

Why you say? Because the radical/activists (TPM/academics/radicals/civil servants/KC’s etc) are leading the charge and whipping up the hysteria against TPB/Seymour … and along the way are gaining support of “low information” Maori/Pakeha amplifying support for a radical reinvented future. He Puapua.

By ACT/Nat/NZF working in with the Tribes and movers and shakers, explaining and accommodating where practical, a process that will make life better for all NZ’ers (all and including Maori – the Tribal Chiefs were signatories to the ToW after all), then that will:

1. Achieve better outcomes for all.
2. Reduce the “division”.
3. Temper the radical/activists.

On the last point, beware of unintended consequences (of bumping along with a TPB as business as usual), which is playing out in front of us enabling the radical TPM to lead the narrative, for the worse, ethnocentric, outcomes for all NZers.

But that narrative can be changed and taken away from TPM for the better, by in person dialogue with leadership.

Do the people that make such a big thing of supporting Palestine not realise that they are, in fact, helping extend the current conflict?
After the initial Hamas attack it quickly become an immense propaganda exercise by Hamas.
They realised that if they based themselves amidst vulnerable Palestinian infrastructure, any attempts to attack them would result in damage to Israel’s reputation.
Therefore hospitals, schools and population concentrations were used as prime gathering places.
The media, some already supportive, then produced the necessary pictures.
Every time Hamas were attacked it added another layer to a growing pile of great propaganda for their cause.
Why would they want a ‘cease fire’?
