This is just embarrassing for Athletics NZ. With all due respect to them, most of their life members are unknown to me and, I’d suggest, the wider public.

The other thing is that Arch was on the telly last night and looks extraordinarily healthy and compis mentis. I would be more than happy to be similar at 80.

    Made an OBE in 1982 and a CNZM in 2021. At that rate he would be knighted at age 13o or so and invited to join the ONZ in 2100, given good behavior. I can’t find if he has been made an NZOC Order Holder, but perhaps that too will come in time.

      At last look there was 6 vacant positions on the ONZ list. Last person appointed was Dame Anne Salmond in 2020.

Taxpayers have stumped up $115m towards public housing for Pacific Islanders only in Porirua. It offers a shared ownership scheme where houses may be privatised at below market prices.

I can understand why Islanders would like to live Island-style; I’m just not sure why I’m funding it.

If a group of English immigrants wanted a Cotswold-style village, would they receive similar funding?

It seems that racial preference is alive and well under Christopher Luxon.

      Yet another illustration of why Maori community ownership of land cuts off traditional loan funding. It’s no use as collateral for borrowing because it can’t be sold if there’s a default.
      
      In the rort here, funding has been given to Pacific Islanders by taxpayers, with no land put up for security for a loan.
      
      It’s relevant that the land in this case wasn’t “Maori freehold,” as always Maori-owned land is known. It is reported to have been bought by Ngati Toa. However, you can bet Ngati Toa will treat it as unalienable.
      
      Proportions of rock safe lending, such as that secured over land, are required of banks by the Reserve Bank, and indirectly by international banking organisations and by credit-ranking agencies.
      
      There is rising pressure in NZ for unsaleable, community owned land to be changed in security status, without making it alienable — able to be sold.
      
      A Labour Government under Ardern might have gone along with this, perhaps with encouragement from the present Reserve Bank governor, who has Maorified the outer shell of the organisation.
      
      This campaign isn’t over. It would make a two-tier, race-based financial environment.

Despite the debt horror stories emanating from Wellington City Council, the worst council in the region and indeed the country if not the WORLD turns out to be, wait for it, ta-daa- Upper Hutt!

“Standard & Poor’s has cut its rating on the council’s long-term debt from ‘A+’ to ‘A’.
No other New Zealand council had a rating below A+. S&P said it expects the council’s cash deficit in the year just passed and the coming year to set a world record among councils it tracks”.

    Those who vote Labour/Green/Maori party are unlikely to read anything which drills down to the consequences of electing them. We have a large chunk of our population who will only ever vote left, which is why there is churn between these three.
    There is a similar chunk on the right.
    As young educated folk get older they often swing to the right, but sadly the left appeals to the indoctrinated, idealistic, and naive.

  Context –
  King was speaking on the issue in connection with a suicide prevention fundraising event in Dunedin struggling to gain an alcohol licence from the council. He said any alcohol ban would be “classic overreach” [pointing out the licence was for the fashion event being held to raise funds, and in that it was not for those the event was collecting for} and then claimed it was the solution for people with mental health.
  
  What was said –
  “Alcohol is not a problem for people with mental health issues.
  “It’s actually the solution to our problem and until you come with a better solution …
  “It stops those thoughts,” he explained.
  “I would suggest to you that alcohol has prevented more young people from taking their own lives than it actually makes them take their own lives.
  “I mean, I’m a drug addict, an alcoholic; my whole life, I’ve used drugs and alcohol to stop that little voice inside my head that told me that I wasn’t good enough, that I was useless.
  “It’s a release, it’s like a video game.
  “It’s like methadone, it keeps us going until some help comes along. It’s our life jacket.”

  This is similar to the muck-raking which tore down the Mad Butcher, proclaimed to be a racist.
  Mad Butcher founder Sir Peter Leitch says “light hearted banter” he had with a young Maori woman has been misinterpreted as racist comments.
  Waiheke Island local Lara Bridger on Tuesday claimed Leitch had told her “Waiheke is a white man’s island” and she shouldn’t be there.
  … “And now, OK, I’m f…ing upset.” – although Lara was okay with the exchange of banter until, according to first reports, she recounted the ‘incident’ to her mother, and then became ‘upset’.
  
  “Social elements” were eager to cut Peter Leitch down to size, as similar elements are eager to destroy Mike King, and both Leitch and King unfortunately provided fuel in something that could have been better expressed.
  
  And on alcohol: Gabor Maté – “I ask not Why the addiction, but Why the pain?”
  
  The Herald article quoted above gives lots of “information”, but far as I can see, does not mention that “Gumboot Friday” is today – perhaps a little unCharitable of them…

      Could be quite an interesting debate. It’s long been known that SSRI anti-depressants increase suicide risk. Depressants like alcohol are relatively safe in heavy users. The problem with almost any drug is that people respond differently to them. What works for one may not work for another. Decades ago when I worked in the area the buzz words were a future of “personalised medicine” based on your genetic profile. Public health in particular seems to have gone the other way. If something is harmful to a small part of the population then we must ban it for everyone.

    I don’t imagine things will have changed, domestic violence nearly always involves alcohol abuse, and alcohol is a depressant.
    If King is an alcoholic it would perhaps explain some of the odd behavior exhibited toward former supporters and associates.
    I have gotten appointments same day with GPs or the Emergency Health Teamfor persons having voices, and appropriate medication within hours. There’s no excuse for suggesting people self medicate with alcohol, when often persuading them to seek proper treatment is a major problem.

    To me it looks like King simply poorly articulated his point. The putrid NZ MSM then used this to conflate his position to being “alcohol good for depression/suicidal thoughts” etc, because he is generally not on side with their woke crap. They could have simply contacted him for further clarification but they instead were happy to build a malicious fiction, as they do.

      True enough. But if it wasn’t climate change it would be some interchangeable “the end is nigh” scenario.
      Nuclear war, the next ice age, meteorites, mass extinctions, global pandemic, famine, pestilence, etc
      
      The only unique thing about climate change is that someone had the bright idea of coming up with a bogeyman that can be appeased by giving money to it. That was the clever part.

    I am sure that hype caused by climate hype does contribute to mental health issues – especially stress in the young.
    
    Some years ago the BBC had a cartoon “documentary” to explain climate change to kids. It showed water rising rapidly and waves lapping over the top of Big Ben.
    
    Big Ben is 96 metres tall and it stands a good few metres above sea level. Based on even the most outrageous projections, Big Ben won’t even get its feet wet in the next 1000 years – let alone be covered.
    
    Of course kids would get stressed by that. But stress caused by bullshit is different to stress caused by reality.

      I would love to see an analysis of who is Mentally unwell in New Zealand, and by some ethnic and human breakdown as well.
      Billions are being poured into this but with no results, only seriously increasing numbers, and the need for more money – for what ?
      The UK has the biggest cause of increasing mental illness caused by immigration.
      Perhaps we could look at what represents the causes of Mental Illness and not just money.

        We have had alcohol and cannabis for thousands of years but antipsychotic drugs are relatively new.
        Suicide seems also to be relatively new.

        King sort of has a point – Alcohol is a depressant as are benzodiezapines (mothers little helper). Benzos are still used for treatment of anxiety. I know I used alcohol as a crutch when I watched my mother take a year to die from cancer, badly. It does take away feelings for a while and one avoids the perceived stigma of going to the quack about mental health issues.
        
        Not a good option but you can see how it might seem better than nothing. I don’t think it’s sensible to present it as a decent option when it has so many poor side effects.
        
        Good suicide stats are hard to find but if we look 100 years back in the UK, OZ and the US then suicide rates haven’t magically jumped. We see peaks during catastrophic times e.g. great depressions (interestingly they may well have dropped during World Wars) and they do appear to have dropped overall with a recent creeping (and I do mean creeping) up over the last couple of decades.
        
        We don’t have a recent suicide epidemic.

      Sure, alcohol and drugs to help dumb the pain and quite likely do sometimes take the edge off immediate thoughts of suicide.
      
      But alcohol and drugs do not fix the underlying cause and tend to make things worse in the long run.
      
      A lot of military veterans are suicidal and a lot have become alcoholics. For some, the cure for both has been the same: address the underlying issues which are common.
      
      I am sure many medications have negative impacts. I know that some of mine do – though I have never felt suicidal.

        CMM, I believe Veterans are a different case.
        
        Rightly or wrongly , a few too many drinks and a rant with mates down at the RSA have saved many veterans. Especially those that could not, and were not allowed to discuss publicly certain details of the war incl atrocities, the memories of which trouble them throughout their lives. And most never got counseling.
        
        The scars from war are more than just physical.

        JR: There is a huge difference between alcoholism and the amount you drink. Alcoholism is more about your relationship with alcohol than the amount you drink.
        
        My father was an alcoholic. He drank a lot. He drove drunk on average about twice a week – thankfully never killing anyone – not even his stupid self. But none of that really made him an alcoholic.
        
        What made him an alcoholic was that his whole life was designed around access to alcohol. As a lawyer, a visit to a client was always designed to incorporate liquid lunch where possible.
        
        A very memorable occasion was when he came to visit us in 1996. It was the first time he had seen us for 4 years and the first time he’d seen his new grandson. But none of that mattered – within a minute of clearing customs he was looking for a bottle shop.
        
        Getting pissed on occasion with your mates is fine – and a good release for veterans (or anyone for that matter). But for many it gets carried away and becomes more than daily release.
        
        There are a lot of South African and Rhodesian veterans who have fallen into this hole. Those that I know of that have crawled out have done so through addressing their alcoholism and PTSD etc as a single issue. Most have done so either through religion, Alcoholics Anonymous or specialised veterans’ therapy which often draws on those.

    Doctor gives me lectures but I just had a liver scan and have no scarring or fat issues so he can give it a rest now. Drink water he says – beer is 90 – 96% water!

      Too many people trying to incorrectly blame immigration for all sorts of things, when they actually dislike immigration for other reasons.
      
      Over the last 50 years, NZ population has gone from 3 million to 5 million. Houston metro area population has more than tripled in that time. But you can buy a nice house in Houston for NZD300k. Their salaries are higher too.
      
      So what is the difference?
      
      MCos is right that the problem is capital being tied up in residential property instead of productive activity. But tax is not the answer. Shares and property are taxed more or less the same, and even with a CGT would still be taxed the same. So tax won’t get people to switch from one to another.
      
      The core of the problem, is that people in Houston expect better returns from shares than we do. And the reason they expect that, is that the burden on businesses from tax, regulations, and employment law, is less over there.

      Increase in population is only a small part of the housing problem.
      
      A far bigger issue is the reduction in utilisation.
      
      The 10 closest houses to us on our street have an average of 4 bedrooms and only 2 inhabitants:
      * 3 have one person living in them (2 divorcees, 1 widow).
      * 1 has 4 inhabitants (couple + 2 late teenager kids – who will soon be moving out).
      * 6 have 2 inhabitants (empty-nester couples).
      * 3 have a bedroom used as a home office.
      
      30 years ago, the average occupancy of houses was higher – likely over 4 per household. Smaller families also mean the number of houses per population increases.
      
      As more and more people become empty-nesters the need for houses per population will increase.

  The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) has border conflicts with most of its neighbors, and has invaded Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, etc.
  One country, two systems, no longer exists in Hong Kong.
  The CCP ideology is not that of NZ. I’d very much prefer we pivot away and diversify our trading relationships to more similar democratic countries.

  I would have liked to have seen cheap energy in that list. Cheap, abundant, energy would help to make us more productive, and expensive energy will lead (and has led) to businesses failing. Cheap electricity will mean more of us can keep our homes warm (or cool), meaning we’ll be healthier.
  Solar and wind does _not_ lead to cheap (or abundant) electricity. If we look oversea to places lime L.A, U.K and Germany, we see evidence that wind and solar have led to some of the most expensive electricity in the world.

  Brash’s analysis of China is very poor. China, or more specifically the CCP, are a threat to peace and freedom in the region and the wider world. The economy in China is nowhere near the official figures and the reports coming out of China shows serious problems for the planned economy – and that’s even after they have been heavily censored. I would not be betting our future on China and their economy.
  China has a border dispute with every single country it borders and that includes it so-called allies of Russia and North Korea. The US never said that there is one China with Bejing as the rightful government. The US “understands” that there is one China, and the US acknowledge the sides disagree on what that means – that’s a big difference. Further, the Communists have never ran Taiwan – it has never been part of the People’s Republic of China. It was a Japanese colony from 1895 to 1945 and then run by the Republic of China. The take-over of Hong Kong has been disastrous for HK in terms of human rights as well as economically. The free people of Taiwan want nothing to do with the worse mass-murdering regime in human history. Taiwan over the previous 40 years has built themselves a free, democratic, and prosperous country – why would they abandoned that for the CCP?
  The nine-dash line that the CCP insists upon swallows up basically the entire of the South China Sea. This is not an EEZ, they insist this is their territory and will enforce it. You think our goods will be able to freely pass through this area without kowtowing to the Emperor Xi? Ask the Philippines how it went cozing up to China under the previous President. The global ambitions of the CCP are clear with their belt and road initiative – overpriced and poorly constructed infrastructure that is indebting countries in a new neo-colonial empire. Things are not looking good in Africa when the CCP turns up.
  While Brash usually has a good analysis on many things this is one where he fails miserably. It is not surprising that the Helen Clarke and himself agree on this area. Both think we live in a unique and special benign strategic environment – this is clearly not true.

We are talking the sort of money to by a large Fendalton section and build a 5 bedroom, 2 living , 4 bath, pool, spa and tennis court McMansion. And they are needing that much money for safety upgrades on a rail rossing. F off.
  
  Also I hear kiwi rails own reports indicate the chances of injury, without upgrades, is 1 accident in ~ 10,000 years.

  What makes it even more stupid is they are closing the cycleway even though the cycle way does not cross the railway.
  
  If you look at a map of the area, my guess is that people from the local area are jumping onto the cycle way at Scruttons Road, and the train drivers have reported some near misses. Previously the only traffic across the crossing were the few house at the end of the road.

        Buoyancy in the wrong places can actually cause drowning.
        
        This is why you should never use a diving wetsuit (designed for use with a weightbelt etc) as a general watersports wetsuit.
        
        Nor should you ever use an oversized lifejacket on a child.

    Wetsuits add a lot of bouyancy. Much easier to stay afloat when wearing a wetsuit.

        It depends on the size of the weightbelt and other factors.
        
        The weightbelt I used in Cape Town was at least 10 kg. Likely a lot more. I once left it at home by mistake on a spearfishing trip. Didn’t go well. I had to work so hard getting down that I didn’t have much air left. Couldn’t get much deeper than 15 metres.

    Heh, heh. While I’m hoping for a “comfortable” victory for Harris, a tiny part of me would love to see her win 270–268 and lose the popular vote by, hmm, let’s say at least 1M.
    
    Can you imagine the reaction from MAGA? “No way!”, they’ll scream. “The popular vote should prevail!” Then the Trump lawyers will file motions arguing as to why going by the outcome of the popular vote is “constitutional”. It would be great fun.
    
    What such a result would almost certainly lead to, though, is another serious bi-partisan attempt — the last one was in 1969 — to do away with the Electoral College. Indeed, the Republicans being on the sharp end of a presidential loss in this way for the first time, is the only realistic way the institution can be abolished.

I have no issues with a woman wanting to appear as a man. Adults can do what they want. However it seems incongruous for the person to then decide to give birth to a child, which has for all of human history, been reserved for women.

People living in the European Union should stockpile emergency supplies in the event of war breaking out or another major emergency, a new report has advised.

The report on Europe’s civilian and military preparedness, published on Wednesday, was written by former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö in his capacity as Special Adviser to the President of the European Commission.

The report notes that the EU was not prepared for either the COVID-19 pandemic or Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and that it needs to move “from reaction to proactive preparedness.”

  It would be nice to be able to supply even 30 percent of petroleum supplies in an international conflict. That would not supply private use, but it would allow essential services.
  
  I suspect most folk have no idea what would happen with literally no petroleum products in New Zealand. No food distribution, just for a start.

    It use to be that you could run cars here in NZ on LPG 🙂
    Also plans for a synthetic fuel refinery that would turn coal and nat gas into diesel fuels, i was always under the impression that the fuel could then be refined further at Marsden but have been told that Marsden could only refine oil shipped in from the middle east.
    Horribly expensive but still better than having nothing at all.

    My impression is that as memories of the earthquakes fade, younger Christchurch folk don’t much care about preparing for natural disasters. A gas BBQ with plenty of gas, a month’s supply of canned food, 100 litres of water per person – all those make a huge difference. Also a basic first aid kit, good flashlights, etc. If you can manage it, a couple of hundred in cash in a safe place is handy too.
    
    The other thing as that folk on benefits are unlikely to have the money to accumulate stores of food.

      I’d rate my chances at 50:50 if famine hits.
      
      I can rule out being first-off the block to raid the local supermarket, so I’d have to start in on the ducklings, then the adult ducks and cats.
      
      I could live off my fat for a good few weeks, but I’d probably start foraging…and that should keep me going for a few more weeks, as I doubt many others around hereabouts would know how to dine off common weeds or seaweeds.

      It fades much faster than that!
      
      During the Christchurch clean up, I joined the Farmy Army doing a lot of shovel work etc around New Brighton.
      
      I questioned pretty much everyone I talked to as to whether they had an emergency preparations. Less than 10% had anything and only one or two had more than 48 hours worth. Most people only had what had been given to them by people giving hand outs.
      
      And that was less than 5 months after they’d all been shaken severely by the Darfield EQ.

      A handheld CB radio (with knowledge of how to use it) would not go astray either. A decent waterproof 5W one (approx 17km range with unobstructed line of sight). Cost around $150. Disasters often knock out cell towers.

        Land-line phones that have survived cellphone popularity seem mainly to connect through broadband, which uses powered routers in homes.
        
        The Christchurch quakes cut power in many suburbs.
        
        Only older telephones still connected by copper lines remained in use. I think they run on very mild power those lines carry.

There was massive flooding in the Spanish region of Valencia on Tues with 158 so far dead. However this news item contradicts itself when it says weather events are becoming more destructive, when the death tolls seem to be decreasing at least according to the 3 flood events they mention.

“The tragedy is already Spain’s worst flood-related disaster in modern history, and meteorologists say human-driven climate change is making such extreme weather events more frequent and destructive.
In 2021, at least 185 people died in heavy flooding in Germany. Prior to that, 209 people died in Romania in 1970 and floods in Portugal in 1967 killed nearly 500 people.”

There are 65-75k non-citizens of voting age in Maine.

    Possibly true. I think there is a market throughout USA for local politicians in tight races to buy a few percent of total turnout in the form of fraudulent votes to secure a victory. Republican or Democrat, but all levels of race are for sale, from local to federal.
    
    And democrats as party of corporates and elites have by far the largest budgets – generally 2-3x republican at presidential level – making them the primary benefactors.
    
    That means that in many many cases winners of elections are there through fraudulent means, and so highly motivated (and in future blackmailable) to prevent investigations of their or other’s elections.
    
    Which is why the fraud infrastructure exists in more than just swing states. There is money to be made (for power and opportunities to enrich via political corruption) in every state.

As we all now well suspect/know, Trump suffers from a severe personality disorder, being malignant narcissism with sociopathic features. He is also experiencing cognitive decline, which is evidenced by his linguistic decline. (See the video, from 13:38.)

He is also becoming increasingly feeble, as evidenced by his stumbling and near face-plant when getting into the rubbish truck in Green Bay, WI.

In addition to his increasingly obvious unsuitability for the job, I have several concerns about a second Trump presidency, including his undisguised autocratic tendencies and my fear that the ghastly, ambitious, JD Vance will “25” him before the end of 2026 and assume the presidency for himself, for perhaps 10 years.

We can only hope the American people do not cede power to the Trump-Putin-Musk triumvirate next week, for all our sakes. (What am I talking about? See this at election forecast E-7: https://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2024/10/us_presidential_election_forecast_e-7.html/comment-page-1#comment-3637268.)

I’m hoping that not only will Trump’s campaigning, to get “lower-propensity-to-vote” voters to the polling booths, is largely unsuccessful, but that we also see the emergence of a new phenomenon in US elections, what I refer to as the “shy-Harris” voter. I imagine such voters would primarily be Republican-leaning women who are appalled by the effects of the Supreme Court’s “Dobbs” ruling, which “tore away [women’s] constitutional right to privacy and bodily autonomy by giving states increased rights to limit and even outlaw abortions”, but they could be anyone who would not normally vote Democrat but who simply cannot countenance another Trump presidency, one that will be unconstrained by further electoral considerations.

In this regard, I’m cautiously hopeful, because early-voting data suggests women are out-voting men by as much as 11-13 points in states like Pennsylvania (13), Michigan (12), Georgia (12), and North Carolina (11) – see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Mk3ND_aX58 from 13:50.

We will see.

“G the Giant from Dunedin” pointed out the other day that the Government had made major changes to the management of water, including kicking out “Te Mana o te Wai” as a guiding principle of water management. I was skeptical.

Today a very senior position has been advertised in a Government department that deals with these matters. This is how it starts:

“Te Mana o te Wai and Te Tiriti o Waitangi …. are central to our mahi.”

I keep hearing about these significant changes that are being made in such areas by the Government. then I look into it and it is mostly a mirage.

  How about this:
  1) Stop committing crime.

    The Herald article quotes the supposed iwi leader as saying
    “There was no engagement before or after by the NZ Police with Whakatohea – a Tiriti o Waitangi partner to the Crown of which the NZ Police is a part.”
    ““If the NZ Police Head office….think that they can do what they have done again in our district again then they have another thing coming.”
    
    Whakatohea, as I understand it, is the local iwi. The spokesman is saying that the Police should have consulted with them before executing the warrants (or perhaps carrying out the investigation). He then goes on to say that they will take action against the Police if they do something similar in the future.
    For starters, the Police would, and should, never discuss a police operation with a bunch of civilians which would likely include the very targets of the operation. Second, to ensure the success of any termination, it needs to be done swiftly and at an inconvenient time for the offenders, to ensure that both they and the evidence of their offending are available. Third, if you do not want your children to be upset by having their door kicked down, their parents arrested and their house searched, then don’t sell meth to members of your iwi.
