It seems the last NZ government is not the only one who that came to grief trying to get new ferries. Tasmania also has stuffed it up, with both cost overruns and late delivery plus essential upgraded berths would not ready in time. The ships ordered would not fit in existing berths. Oh, how familiar. However in a big contrast to here, there the Minister actually resigned.

Though this incident is not data, there seems a universal story that a bureaucracy with its own agenda driven by incompetent politicians cannot do any infrastructure without stuffing it up. For NZ, was there anything built during the previous administration that was within budget and on time? I could expand that to local government for last ten years.
Yet in an almost textbook example of Dunning Kruger, the politicians still continue to believe in their own ability to drive “ambitious” projects – signature landmarks which invariably turn out to be white elephants. All this rather than sticking to the basics. That’s too boring or maybe it’s because it is old white males excel at.

Tauranga Nats planned a debate tonight between two teams of Nat MPs. An “encourage the team” event with a bit of fundraising. Email arrived yesterday from the local MP Sam Uffindell, that the event location had cancelled the booking because,of a threatened protest. Appalling. Probably local Hamas supporters plus a few Maori radicals. A much better idea would be the police doing what they’re paid to do.

    No, Mike, they shouldn’t feel that they should cancel because of a threat of violence. Freedom of speech includes being able to speak. Peaceful protest does not include violence, intimidation or damage to property, all of which you are advocating, albeit the indirectly.

        Looks like I was wrong – the venue did cancel, and that surprises me.
        The venue was the Tauranga Yacht & power Boat Club which is located on the reclamation land. The main issue would be only one road in & out of the place – so disruption would be very easy to accomplish.

  Ok, fair enough. If it is a cafe or restaurant- the proprietors obviously don’t need the income.
  If it is a local hall or similar, the owners/managers don’t need the income.
  And they don’t need the hassle of repairing any damage done by protesters.
  And the police will be saved the bother of turning up to ensure that no laws are broken.

    I think you’re being unfair. If it is a smallish restaurant or cafe they run the risk of being doxxed if they go ahead. The resulting loss of custom could send them to the wall.
    Rather than punish a small business owner should we not address those responsible for the threats (no doubt carefully veiled) of disruption and violence.

  What’s to stop dead people voting? Safeguards like signature verification did not happen last time in many states. For example –

      News from today; shows there is a massive coordinated electoral fraud effort underway in critical swing state Pennsylvania at least (and will almost certainly be similar in other swing states).
      
      BREAKING: Lancaster, Pennsylvania officials have busted a large-scale fraudulent voter registration scheme that includes thousands of applications with the same handwriting, fake signatures, false addresses, etc
      
      They discovered the same scheme in other Pennsylvania counties.
      
      District Attorney Heather Adams revealed that the applications came from canvassers who were paid to obtain voter registrations, adding that “The majority of the applications were from residents in the city of Lancaster… The canvases themselves took place at various shopping centers, parking lots of grocery stores and businesses, sidewalks and parks.”
      
      “We are aware of at least two other counties that receive similar applications that are currently being investigated.”
      
      If you listen closely, the DA said the Clerk received the applications at or near the deadline to register to vote. That means the bad actors waited till the last minute so no one would notice. They would’ve used the fraudulent applications to commit mail-in ballot fraud without getting caught.

        Thanks for the update. If I recall correctly, in 2020, Pennsylvania was one of the first states to have a large senate meeting, detailing the fraud. People given evidence were scrutineers, and observers, many ex military.
        
        -Ballot Boxes full of “postal ballots”, all for democrats, that were not in envelopes and not folded, so never arrived by mail.
        
        -Nerds rushing around with a dozen USB drives plugging into voting machines.
        
        -Evidence that voting machines were being accessed remotely with “firmware updates” being applied after voting started, which is not allowed.
        
        Which stroke for stroke, is an almost identical scenario of what happened in one season on the series “The Good Wife” where they did exactly that:
        
        -Wheeled in fake boxes of ballots in wee small hours.
        -Tampered with voting machines with “firmware updates” to alter the vote count.

        Once anonymized ballots are permitted into the system – without checks for their legality – there is no way of assessing via recounts etc if they were ever valid.
        
        In 2020 the rejection rate for postal ballots went down to fractions of a percent from historic several percent. These ‘checks’ were being done without oversight, in democratically held metropolitan shitholes like Fulton County Georgia, by poll workers hired by Democrat controlled administrations. Does that sound like the kind of set up that will produce honest rigorous checking for fraud?
        
        The whole process of checking postal ballot validity amounts to an electoral worker comparing a signature on the envelope against a signature on file and then dropping the ballot in the counting box and chucking the envelope. It was being done in an average of a few seconds, and is a near useless check that you can drive a bus load of fraud through – either by telling the bored/unmotivated/tired checkers to speed up, or by registering fake voters and creating fake (duplicated) signatures using computers and printers to fill in the documentation at large scales.
        
        It is incredibly weak against industrial scale ballot fraud efforts in democrat controlled cities, and that is by (Democrat efforts to change laws to enable it) design.

        There is no way of knowing if there were 100x as many that were not caught – it relies upon voter’s checking. It is easy for fraudsters to find out if people have voted in previous elections from publicly available records making it easy to target them for fraudulent postal ballot harvesting with noone the wiser, and as Pennsylvania shows easy to create large numbers of fake voters – they wouldn’t have established such larges systematic processes for doing it otherwise, and this is for sure not their first Rodeo. And Colorado admit that 3 fraudulent ballots are in the system and will be counted.
        
        The state and county level election winning beneficiaries of the fraud (Republican and Democrat) have effective local control and veto over processes and investigations into the fraud. Given such incentives and controls it is inevitable that it will be rampant.

      Obama’s AG Eric Holder was actually held in contempt by a bi-partisan vote in Congress for stiffing their subpoena to testify over the Fast and Furious scandal, he just laughed and told them to stick it and everybody just shrugged and moved on because it was accepted to be a political dance.
      
      But now that the Democrats have established a new rule I hope the GOP applies it to future Democrats. In fact if they want this lawfare shit to stop they’ll have to do that.

  Steve Bannon’s due release date is 29 October and the Federal Bureau of Prisons says he will be released then. So he is not being held in prison past his due release date. If he was held beyond 29 October his lawyer can file a writ of Habeas Corpus as well as sue for damages for wrongful imprisonment.

        I’m with you pererwn. I don’t want it again.
        I took the initial jab and the booster, but no more after that.
        Early this year I caught Covid and was as sick as a dog for 2 weeks. I tested negative at the end of those 2 weeks but it was another fortnight till I felt anything like back to normal.
        I will be getting boosted from now on. I look forward to when they combine the booster with the annual flu shot.
        Some may experience Covid as a mild cold. They’re lucky, for others it’s much worse.

      No, Steve. Undoubtedly many Māoris were ripped off in the colonial period. Land confiscation in Waitara and the Waikato were two obvious cases. In Wellington, a tenth of the land was supposed to be set aside from the sale. Much less than a tenth was reserved, and of that land that was reserved, much was leased (to the local hospital board and Athletic Park, among others) on a peppercorn rental. These were injustices that needed to be settled.
      
      Having said that, full & final needs to apply. And, legal truth-stretching needs to stop. In 1840, broadband was not a taonga. And, the water we drink and the air we breathe, not to mention outer space, are not within remit.

  I’m pretty sure this happens in Aus at times- their feed in tariffs used to be insane, a friend paid off his rooftop solar in about 3 years with the feed in tariff. I think the gov/ regulator severely cut the price paid at that point. Germany obvs failed to read the situation…

  That is a good point.
  
  While we have some very, very, bright people making the technology that everyone depends on, the rest of the population does not need to be as bright to survive and we’re seeing this reflected in maths scores etc.
  
  Consider how computers in their various guises (shop check outs, banks, calculators, smart phone apps,…) have replaced day-to-day arithmetic that everyone could do in their head.
  
  While very few people are brighter, the vast majority are getting dumber.
  
  I expect this will only increase – especially if we get more pervasive AI.

    When the day comes that electricity no longer automatically arrives at the click of a switch, or they can no longer affordably fly to the Balearics for some winter sun, or tropical fruit no longer appears in the supermarket, or the European Champions League is restructured to avoid unnecessary travel – then they will care.

    If you build any automation technology, it is an aid and a tool to speed up the process, but everyone should still know how to do the process manually.
    
    This is in keeping with the concept of being taught “how to think”, instead of “what to think”.
    
    Knowing “how to think” is a dying art, far more common in us more mature types than the younger generations.
    
    Anyone that knew “how to think” could see through the Covid pandemic lies from the very beginning. Those who weren’t taught “how to think”, drank the Koolaid news with smugness.

      “People knowing how to do things” has been dying for a long time.
      
      My Dad knew how to set the points and grease the nipples on his 1950s British car. I can change the oil on my ICE vehicle. My son won’t be able to do anything on his EV except check the tyre pressure.
      
      The same is true for electrical gadgets, partly because they’re not built with repair in mind but also because they’re much more complex, perhaps unnecessarily so. Check out the 1960s Kenwood mixer vs today’s electronic masterpiece.
      
      The reality is that affluence brings complexity, while we are less and less inclined to do anything except to pay someone else to fix or replace.

  Jobs are there. As a new graduate my daughter has been offered two, but is hanging out for a third.
  
  She started by babysitting in the neighbourhood, then volunteering on Saturdays at a charity shop. There she learned eftpos & cash handling, stock control, dealing with difficult people etc. Her first paid job was in a lunch bar; her colleagues slopped out bain marie food or scrubbed the pots but she got to be on the till because she had done it before. From there she moved to a restaurant waitress role, and later to a girl Friday job in a small engineering firm.
  
  I have to say that she has an outward going personality and could always speak with adults. By contrast, my son lives in his bedroom, scorned volunteer work, never picked up the phone but applied for roles on line. Predictably, he was less successful than his sister.

    Correct NMTB. My two daughters were delivering hopeful CV’s when they were at college. Those CV’s got fleshed out as they did different jobs (including online influencing). Both worked while at Uni. Both are early 20’s and have been building share portfolios for more than 5 years plus have money in managed funds. When I taught them about the time value of money, they were quite dismissive of the 90c interest they got. But now, they absolutely get it.

      Back in the day educator John Holt wrote some innovative books, the most well known being How Children Learn and How Children Fail.
      
      One thing he suggested – get rid of schools and set up a lot of volunteers in the neighbourhood. Any child could knock on these doors and ask how to spell a word. That was enough to open a learning door, like at the library. Thinking well out of the box he was.

        It would be nice if you could “fire” someone for good reasons. When you hire someone in New Zealand it’s almost like you are marrying them. Very difficult to rid yourself of an undesirable employee. There is a long advesarial process that a company must go through to in order to rid themselves of a undesirable/bad employee.
        
        Having good legal advise is very important to minimize (not eliminate) the chances of finding yourself in a very expensive legal battle.

    You enter the store and register your debit / credit card. A bit like using a self serve petrol station. You pick your purchases and pass through a scanner. A robot tells you the cost. You press a button and exit the store.

        If implemented, you would:
        
        – enter the supermarket and swipe your card. It would debit a nominal hold – say $20.
        
        – Fill your trolley.
        
        – Wheel your trolley through a scanner – no need to individually scan each item.
        
        – Robot tells you the cost – you press a button to confirm that you want to purchase. Card processed and barrier opens to let you out of the store.

      Some v cool vids from Ocado in the UK, robotic picking and packing online grocery orders on a huge scale. Probably not here for a good while due to customer numbers and costs per.

        Anecdotally, I think that young workers who must be paid the adult minimum wage are being partially displaced by older workers. This seems to be particularly so in New Zealand which has the highest workforce participation rates of older workers in the OECD.

        GPS already does its share. The machine on the bus knows where the bus is in relation to the zone boundaries. When you swipe off, it then calculates the difference between where you got on & charges the fare based on whatever the rules are. The only difference is that the charge goes against your stored value card rather than your bank account.

        A cheap home brew solution is illusory. There are limitations as to how much information that can be installed on a credit or debit card. In practice it would be only sufficient information so an inspector can check that the passenger tagged on. So the reader system need to store the tag on’s and tag off’s until they can be uploaded which could be immediately or worst case the end of the day. Cubic has developed the back end engine which processes all the tag information, calculates the total fare at the end of the day and puts through a debit with the appropriate card company. it handles transfers, daily caps, weekly caps etc. The back end system would have cost a fortune to develop and the intellectual property would be worth billions. It would not be worthwhile for the largest public transport operators to develop a home-brew system with that versatility. So that is why London, Sydney, New York, New Zealand (work in progress) etc have contracted to use the Cubic system despite high front end costs.
        To give an example of the difference it makes – an overseas passenger arrives at Sydney Airport and finds the next train to Central or Circular Quay leaves in 5 minutes. The passenger can tag on at the turnstile with pretty well any major credit or debit card and is quickly on the train. A similar passenger at Auckland Airport (at present) has to purchase a HOP card to get on the bus to Puhinui station to catch a train to town. The passenger cannot pay cash on the bus.   The only fallout for in is tariffs, we seen high quality organic wool to the states. Because it is organic, it fetches a huge price over snd above the global market. The price for the wool is twice the price plus, a tariff may damage that, but to suggest that is a reason to hate trump is pathetic, organic wool in the US is probably impossible to source with the requirement to be pesticide free. They may well not put tariffs on products they need.

I have seen prices that are more than double the global price, I have worked in wool for 44 years, are you suggesting I don’t know what I am talking about? I see many down votes, probably because of organic, but if customers want pesticide free wool, and they want to pay huge, then why the hell is that a bad thing? I e we old gave thought people on here would celebrate the fact hard working farmers e we oils have the audacity to take contract prices close to two and a half times the global price. It’s utterly nuts that people here who say they are not woke do not understand that farmers operate the way they can. I follow a couple of military related channels on youtube. I came across a very interesting analytical piece in the from of a discussion between a retired marine and a former US Navy SEAL officer.

The discussion related to the publication of a report into the death by drowning of two US navy seals during a boarding operation in the persian gulf.

The thing that most struck me about the discussion was that its focus was not on the mistakes that had occurred during the boarding process but the lack of adequate planning for contingencies in the event that things went wrong.

The tenor of the discussion was basically “shit goes south all the time” but you have to extensively plan for that eventuality.

In this context the interesting question with respect to the loss of the Manawanui will be what contingency planning was in place in case “shit went south” during the reef surveying operation.

      IMO a New Zealand team winning a test series in India 2-1 is a bigger achievement than your example.
      
      India has not lost a series at home since 2012. That was against England. You need to go back to 2004 for another series loss. So this would be only India’s second loss at home in 20 years.
      
      Also, New Zealand has just concluded a 2-0 loss against Sri Lanka.

    Not really. Batting first was always going to be right call, because this is not a wicket to bat fourth on. But, the advantage of the roller does not seem to last beyond a dozen overs or so, which means the pitch has not been overly biased one way or the other.
    
    The reality is that NZ has batted better than India, and have (to date) bowled as well as India.

    Mrs Clinton lost because the US Left thought she was going to win, so the election fraud was restrained, to its ‘normal’ (probably quite significant) level. In 2020 the fraud was blatant and all-out.

Stuff taking a shot at the government:

What are those costs?

The arguments
Whanau pointed to a range of increased costs driving up rates. These are:

1. Three Waters. The Labour Government’s Three Waters plan would have amalgamated local water infrastructure.
2. The Crown observer. Under the Local Government Act, the council bares the cost of the observer.
3. Government-mandated referenda on Māori seats. The coalition Government passed law requiring every council that had recently created Māori wards to hold binding referendum to decide the fate of those wards, or to abolish them.

What a load of rubbish.
1. Leaving aside the odious and racist co governance, Three Waters would have transferred successive councils failure from ratepayers to taxpayers. Saved council budget numbers, but not the actual people who pay.
2. Yes an additional cost. Due to their incompetence.
3. The Maori wards were an undemocratic change Wellington council leapt on. The cost of a referendum is entirely on the council. They don’t have to hold the referendum, they could simply disestablish the racist seat at no cost.

  The observer’s salary is a pittance when compared to the $42 million they have now announced they want to spend on Frank Kitts park (a figure that would certainly grow if they were able to implement their plans). A commission for Wellington is quite obviously needed in view of their determination not to address the city’s problems. And the same model should be applied to most other local authorities – there’s no problem with any of them that can’t be solved simply by forcing them to do less.

    Yep. In yesterday’s Post – the estimate for fencing & lighting the waterfront jumps from $7m to $30m. Turns out that the fencing steel has to be marine grade – who knew!
    
    The problem being fixed is that the occasional drunken idiot falls into the sea and drowns. Which is sad for their family, but also means ratepayers will be hemmed in and be footing the bill for the privilege.
    
    Councillor Tim Brown suggested paying a life saver would be cheaper. A good start, but I’d rather an AI-enhanced camera that fires a life ring into the water, plus some Council investment in encouraging Learn to Swim classes for primary school kids.

  No-one knows specifically where the money paid into scams go, but generically it is to the scammers.
  
  So to find the scammers, we just identify who are the slippery slick snake oil salesmen, selling the scam / snake oil / climate change…
  
  And in any case, DEI Oxfam itself is alleged to be a front organisation for laundering donations, just like Unions, Greenpeace and other lefty organisations, where the bulk of donations fund the organisation not the charities.
  
  Oxfam has been in the media for years over revelations of money laundering, prostitution in Haiti, and other illicit activities, as well as various officials stealing funds.

Should victims and families of victims that aren’t kept safe while using public transport be able to sue the entities that run public transport. Maybe even the employees and directors of these transport entities, that are actively removing the simplicity and safety of private car use and forcing people onto dangerous unsafe public transport.

    If not how will public transport ever be made safer for the passengers(clients if you work in providing these services) if the drivers are to be made safe (locked away in a cabin ) surely the passengers must be made safe as well. After all the ratepayer who pays much of these costs would have a reasonable expectation of safety to be provided by the supplier of the service which in most cases are regional council employees.
