  This caught my attention.
  
  “For example, Switzerland is paying for e-buses in Bangkok. The carbon savings will help meet Switzerland’s target under the Paris Agreement.”
  
  MOTU is arguably the preeminent economics consultancy in New Zealand. While their economists are world class, they can be “ivory tower” folk. You would need to be to conclude that New Zealand is currently comparable to Switzerland. 😣

  I would argue that it is not in the national interest. It will impoverish the country while having zero effect on emissions. Well, effectively zero.
  
  I have not looked at the MOTU numbers but you can believe them. MOTU would not get those wrong. They conclude that if the government postpones purchases, the price will triple or quadruple by 2027.
  
  Does anyone believe that Nicola Willis is going to explain that we can’t afford hospitals or ferries or everything else, but we are giving between $3 billion and maybe up to $12 billion to pay for more energy efficient infrastructure in Indonesia? That is literally what it will come down to.

    The Chief then brained his excess wives with a club.
    Virtuous Westerners are going to pay developing countries trillions to save the planet, but the leaders of those countries are going to scam it like crazy or persecute their political enemies to meet goals.

    We are giving money to Indonesia. Lots of it. It seems insane to me giving money to a country that has a bigger military than ours.

    China is meeting its obligations under the Paris Accord. Because at the Paris meeting, all commitments were voluntary. China told the meeting that it would massively increase emissions. All other countries said “OK”.
    
    Nobody forced the New Zealand obligations on us. We volunteered them.

    Is there still corruption? Probably. Is it high scale? Probably not but I don’t know.
    
    New Zealand has ALREADY paid Indonesia and neighbouring countries $1.3 billion in climate finance. I’d love to see an audit.

I spent the weekend in New Plymouth, my old home town. Sadly Gaza and Hamas supporters are holding rallies there, in beautiful Pukekura Park no less. They displayed pictures of children killed in the Israeli attacks, no doubt hoping to pull at people’s heart strings and gain more support for their cause.

However new facts revealed in captured Hamas documents show that Hamas spent two years keeping quiet and lulling Israel into a false sense of security. They tried to get Iran and Hizbollah involved to make the October 7th attack much bigger and even bring down a sky scraper in Tel Aviv.

The documents revealed –
“they pressed Iran to assist in helping achieve their vision of annihilating the Jewish state, according to documents seized by Israeli forces in Gaza. In letters written in 2021, Hamas’s Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar appealed to several senior Iranian officials including supreme leader Ali Khamenei for additional financial and military support, pledging that, with Iran’s backing, he could destroy Israel completely in two years.”

Levinites should be careful what they wish for. Any Council worth its salt will apply for NZTA funding to replace its unmowen berms with cycle lanes.

I think residents would not be happy with the resulting loss of adjacent on-street parking.

How will obligations be fulfilled in New Zealand First’s Coalition Agreement relating to “the principle that New Zealanders are equal before the law …” if National do not pass beyond the First Reading those same rights contained in the upcoming November introduction of the proposed Treaty Principles Bill that (outlined on the ACT website – http://www.treaty.nz ) says “All New Zealanders are equal under the law with the same rights and duties”?

Will that contradictory situation become as dopey and unresolved as the translation arguments of the original Treaty itself?

Did the Maori chiefs cede sovereignty in 1840? Some say yes, some say no. Did the Crown assume so? An emphatic yes. Does the Crown have sovereignty now? An emphatic yes. Did the chiefs assume so for most of the last 180 years? Most of them and their people did. Should we stop arguing about it? Another yes. The Crown is sovereign. Let’s do this.

  If they didn’t cede sovereignty then Maori would not have the vote in New Zealand.
  
  Instead, the Maori would have kept their traditional governance systems – ie. might is right and anyone who disagrees ends up getting a whack on the head.

    That is not news.

I tuned in to Breakfast on TV1 this morning to check in on NZ’s ongoing descent into DEI / woke madness, and was confronted by a campaign underway – fronted by ‘famous faces’ – to make New Zealand ‘the best place in the world to have Herpes’.
Melissa Stokes presented some ‘news’, including a new study that shows that 60% of New Zealanders are actively avoiding ‘the news’. Reasons given by survey respondents for the avoidance included ‘mental health’ and ‘lack of trust’. But context was provided by Stokes when she said that researchers have found those doing the avoiding “tended to be older and right wing”. I pondered the 60% figure and the ‘information’ about the older and right wing stuff, but I couldn’t make the maths work.

Dear Auckland Transport,

I hate SUVs. I much prefer practical wagons with a lower centre of gravity. They suit my needs nicely.

However, in recent years, you have completely screwed up the Auckland roads, and the maintenance of them. There are potholes, sunken manhole covers, many poor irregularities, plus the countless speed bumps you’ve installed.

We understand that your agenda is to make life harder for drivers, but you’re actually having the opposite effect: I’ve just replaced my wagon with an SUV to cope with the Auckland roads. It was becoming too tiresome with an ‘ordinary’ car, whereas the SUV easily handles your crap roads.

You leftys really have no understanding of ‘unintended consequences’, do you.

  I recall many years ago I saw a newspaper for sale that had the following front page headline: “WW2 airplanes found on far side of moon”.

  As regulars here know, maths isn’t my strongpoint, but I am well aware that if 95%+ of ships captains are men, then it will be men who run aground by a substantial majority. Clearly a very stupid person.

Have not hugely been following the Winston First conference over the weekend.

However as I understand it foreign investment is now OK?

The cynic in me thinks that this is purely to enable Winston to make an issue of foreign investment immediately prior to any future election.

Tragic death for elderly man waiting in ER.

Conclusion of the article, the current government isn’t doing enough for healthcare even though the death happened in July 2021 on Ardern’s watch and her extraordinary health policies neither of which get a single mention in the article.

What is not mentioned in the article is:
* The ethnicity of the person who was left waiting. He is white. Was it a factor? Were ambulances or ED waits also prioritised by ethnicity like other health services?
* That it was right in the middle of the Ardern’s covid protocols and fear mongering. April 22, 2021. Was that a factor? Covid is not even mentioned?!
* Why aren’t people given more accurate ambulance and ED waiting times. So the man and his wife could have called a taxi instead of wait 4 hours for an ambulance transfer.
* St Johns reports in 2021 a 10% increase in callouts. Trauma callouts were down 12% but Mental health and suicide were up 30%. Under Ardern’s watch and linked to her lauded Covid response.

“St John also saw a notable increase in patients with chest pain and breathing problems – an increase of 15.5 percent and 14.4 percent respectively – which along with the rise in mental health related call-outs, St John attributes to the direct impact of COVID-19 or COVID-19 lockdowns.” Interestingly stabbing and gunshot wounds also increased 14% during this time period.

* Who should take responsibility? When a private boat captain choses to not turn back before a storm and lives are lost he faces court for his choices. But the hospitals and our previous Prime Minister just shrug walk away and ask what National is gonna do.

Mohammed Abdiwali is a repeat sex offender. He is so much of a risk that Corrections applied for a
Extended Supervision Order (something I expect they only do in extreme cases).

Judge turns them down.

Oh, well, there’s always next time.

Driving in Wellington is a nightmare, and we are seeing a number of Road design choices that beggar belief.

In Island Bay, there are a number of Bus Stops built outside cycleways in such a manner that when the Bus stops to allow passengers to get on and off, the entire road is blocked and no traffic can move until the Bus does.

This raises an issue. Any emergency vehicle will be stopped, and this road is a main thoroughfare.

I bring this up because it is illegal to impede an emergency vehicle, and the road design will achieve exactly that. A Bus Stop should be on the side of the road, and not in the middle of one. Could this be the basis of a legal challenge to the Council over it’s design?
