The general taxpayer should not be buying out Dunedin house owners. Instead, Council should be spending more on pumping infrastructure. It’s one of their primary purposes after all, though they may have forgotten that.

  South Dunedin and flooding is a thing because its so low … I seem to recall previous events have often had questions raised about drains, holding tanks etc not being maintain/cleaned out regularly to ensure capacity drain water is there.

      I saw a tweet this morning from a county in Virginia where voting opened early. Every district within the country has received more votes than they have registered voters.
      
      Polls are all over the place at the moment but one trend has emerged; Harris is losing support, and Trump is gaining support. If Harris is losing momentum just a month out from election day, that doesn’t bode well for her.

      The numbers are fantastically easy to make up. I’ve seen graphs showing that many of the diseases were on the decline (due to basic improvements in sanitation & hygiene) before “miracle” jabs.
      Vaccines are highly likely to have created a spiral of illness & compromised immunity that demands another vaccine to undo the effects of the last – this will be increasingly evident with mRNA. Of course you realise who funds most of these studies too, surely. And you must have seen what happened/happens to anyone, no matter how qualified, who raises questions about the wildly profitable “miracle cures.”

      Benedict, I was referring to the Covid vaccines, but very few vaccines are safe any more. Not Polio, not measles, not MMR, not even Tetanus.
      
      As for Covid vaccines, the death toll is huge. The death stats from Covid-19 are as dodgy as the 2020 USA election. And all the tricks that were used have been discussed at length on this and other blogs.
      
      There is a reason why under Ardern, all stats relating to flu deaths, were suspended for 3 years; There is a reason why under Ardern, all detailed stats relating to causes of death from 2020 forward have been dumbed down.
      
      Do some proper research. If you only ever copy and paste or read from graphs prepared by those with conflicts of interest, you will only ever get what those people want you to see.
      
      The real data has come out from investigations, OIA requests by the dozens in NZ, that is on media all over the world, except mainstream media, but even then it is filtering through.
      
      Follow the money.
      
      Or continue doing what you are doing, being an apologist for tyranny, communism, and un-consented medical experiments on people.

      All GPs were warned that if they consulted with you about the merits of getting or refusing the vaccine, they would be struck off. That has all the required factors of a con.
      
      Imagine if the Real Estate institute threatened Real Estate agents that if they mention the damage a property sustained during the Chch earthquakes, they would be struck off.
      
      Or could be struck off if they showed you the LIM Report, or allowed you to get an external building inspector in to provide a report.

  Have the rates of suicide among young people increased dramatically? Last time I looked at the New Zealand data, the suicide rates seemed stable. Not going down sadly, but stable.
  
  Also, when you first posted about this forthcoming Northern Ireland law, I asked how it was materially different to the exiting law, or to broadly equivalent laws in OECD countries? I think that you will find that the proposed law is nothing unusual when compared to other developed countries. Happy to be corrected.

  The thing is Steve, the Jan 6 “insurrectionists” weren’t the type of people to have heavily encrypted accounts on their phones, apart from people who might have been there for false flag purposes.
  The would be assassins are likely tools of sophisticated agencies, so would have state of the art encryption. And perhaps, like the Biden Hunter laptop, the FBI isn’t trying to hard. Who would know?

  Before 2000, the NSA could decrypt bank grade level encryption in real time. And their technology has vastly improved in 25 years.
  
  And the NSA created many of the encryption protocols in use today.
  
  The only encryption “not decipherable” by the FBI/NSA/CIA, is encryption they created and control.
  
  And if you want to ensure something cannot be decrypted after a one time event deadline is to take offline an online repository that works as a silent component in a multi-factor authentication chain.
  
  It is also possible that multiple phones may act in tandem to provide the encryption / decryption.
  
  Otherwise FBI/NSA/CIA could simply access a copy of mobile phone calls and txts for the MAC address / mobile phone number.

  Bridge, Germans have a natural inclination toward being regimented. We once hosted for a year a 15 year old German student and she showed us her ‘temporary citizen photo ID’ which became permanent when she reached 18. At that time in Germany a Sunday was reserved for family and only service stations and necessary shops remained open. This was of course before the Muslim immigrant flood but we got the impression this student would always do what she was told, without question.

      Upon returning to Britain he commented that the people of NZ were the easiest in the world to govern.

        Karl Popper was a then Canterbury University College philosophy lecturer from 1937 to 1945, and while in Christchurch he he wrote The Open Society and its Enemies and the papers collected in The Poverty of Historicism.
        
        Popper was followed at Canterbury by Arthur Prior,widely regarded as founder of temporal logic.

    We too had a 15/16 year old German Student and she was great company and after we asserted the rules ( it took a few times) we never had a problem with her.
    
    We had the clear impression that she had a very free rein at home though and pretty much did what she wanted.

I was just reading TVNZ’s presser about their proposed cost-cutting exercise(s).

That presser included this:

‘In May, TVNZ axed long-running and celebrated current affairs programmes Fair Go and Sunday. It also axed roles from Re: News and other parts of its business.’

Now, not being nasty or anything, has anyone NOTICED the absence of the programmes that have been axed?

One of the most pernicious, detrimental laws to have ever been passed by a govt has now been enacted in the EU. It goes by the grandiose name of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. It requires any major business wanting to operate in the EU to meet a raft of woke social goals from climate nonsense, diversity hire, disinformation, gender, green energy, less water use and much more. Businesses can be fined, kicked out or even be sued by any pressure group for failing to comply. Not only the large corporate but also its suppliers, wherever they are, must meet the new standards.

So, a company sourcing, say, NZ milk powder and making a food product exported to the EU will have to get the NZ business to comply. It is a daft piece of wokism but it is also an attack on sovereignty like never before. The world barrels down a slippery slope of economic ruin and social madness.

  The EU is well known for non tarrif barriers. They use red tape, at which they are world experts, to add cost and difficulty to any one trying to sell into their market. It is a form of protectionism for EU hobby farmers in e.g France and Ireland.

      Violent criminals and Recidivists cost NZ far less in jail than walking the streets. Though they may cost the govt more to house in prison (a choice – prisons in NZ are very expensive when they don’t have to be), and it accordingly has a bias towards reducing sentences, but most of the costs of crime are actually imposed on members of the general public.

      Don’t say “rehabilitation”. That’s meaningless. Notwithstanding that many prisoners do not avail themselves of programmes are available to them.
      
      What practical, actual, steps to rehabilitate recidivists whose goal is to get the kudos of a prison stint before going back into the gang they came from?
      
      What actual steps if that person who has gone through a programme reoffends?
      
      I’d love it if we had near empty prisons. But that has to come with near zero crime.

      Built a mega prison, locked up all the gang members they could find and the country has gone from being one of the most dangerous countries in South America, to now being one of the safest in a very short time.

This is a “run of river” type 20MW hydro scheme to be located at Morgan’s Gorge on the Waitaha River a few kms south of Ross (on the SI West Coast)

Here we get to see what sort of consent objections were holding up projects.

In this case (according to the site) David Parker as Minister denied consent in 2019, not due to wildlife or most recreational activities, but kayaking specifically (the gorge is extreme kayaking). The company countered later with offering no-take days in conjuction with kayak groups but got no progress.

Also of interest is the project is a Westpower / Ngai Tahu partnership.

The site has a FAQ going over the obvious questions.

In August 2019 David Parker’s office announced that the application had been declined.

In rejecting the application Parker noted that he was satisfied the effects on “birds, bats, lizards, invertebrates, vegetation, native fish, and other aquatic communities, sediment, and river morphology will be minor”.

In essence, Parker’s decision to reject the proposal was due to what were determined to be impacts on the “natural character” of the river and impacts on recreational opportunities.

Parker noted the access for trampers and hunters would likely improve as a result of a better access road near the track and improved access into the Waitaha Valley via track upgrades as a result of concessions being granted.

The decision to decline the application with regard to recreational values focussed on kayaking.

    Yes and Lake Dunstan has lots of water recreation now.
    
    I think the main beneficiaries of this project would be for trampers and hunters getting up past the gorge.
    
    There is no dam or storage per se with this project, more like a small ponding area leading to the take off point

  That’s debatable as we don’t know yet what caused this sinking.
  As for being a “real seaman” Commander Grey doesn’t appear to be one. While this was her first command, her background is not in seamanship but in surface warfare and mine countermeasures, so she is/was very inexperienced as far as navigation, ship handling and general seamanship are concerned. Still, the loss of Manawanui was not necessarily her fault.

    Flossie, not having had access to “devices” to devolve their minds, having to learn to be self sufficient, innovative, and resourceful, I think would develop excellent minds and hearts. My grandparent’s generation were often brought up in environments like that and none suffered for it – quite the opposite.
    
    The back story on the mother has been withheld, and I’d posit that they we best away from her.
    
    There’s so many ways you can look at this, but it all goes back to some bureaucrat / social worker or whatever that got heavy handed and forced the situation to explode, and they did not de-escalate it the first time Tom and the kids came back home – they stuck to their guns thinking that they knew best, and look what happened ….?
    
    Obviously there are a large part of the community that support Tom, and I’d say as they know the whole story better than anyone else, they are better placed to judge the rights from the wrongs. I suspect the Police eventually read the room.
    
    And that’s not to mention the kids who obviously love their Dad. Anyone who has had kids knows if they didn’t want to be there, they’d find a way to be outa there pronto.

  More to the point:
  If you’re charting unknown reefs, then:
  * be hyper vigilant
  * make sure the engines are running well.
  * have a back up plan for loss of power
  * don’t yell at the look out for mansplaining when he says he sees a reef (ok, I made the last one up).
  
  These days mapping a reef does not need a $100M ship with 70+ people on board. All it needs is a 20 ft boat with a $3000 sidescan sonar. The ship’s boat is all that needs to go close to the reef – not the whole ship.

  It was like industrial relations law years ago that forebade employers paying their top employees above-award wages (this still persists in state and integrated schools – pay increases are generally based on years in the profession as the teaching unions think that teaching skills are proportional to length of service).

      Seems the whole approach of a disaster response Federal Emergency Management Agency is a failure. People who sit around 99% of the time doing nothing, are ill prepared when a crisis happens.
      
      What you need is people who spend 99% of the time fixing similar problems on a day to day basis who are pulled in 1% of the time to deal with emergencies.
      
      US military (with all their experience in remote logistics under difficult constraints) + enormous civil works workforce seem like a better bet than the endless cockup that is FEMA.

  Make it in your own words that essentially that effectively ignoring the legal necessity for the exclusivity requirement, the need for continuity and the scope of what can constitute a substantial interruption makes the judges at odds with the law and that in ignoring these these sames judges are literally giving iwi control of almost the entire coastline and in doing so are denying the rights of all New Zealanders to said marine environs.

As Catholic churches burn in Canada, some are questioning belief that thousands of indigenous children died at church residential schools.

Since “ground-penetrating radar” indicated 215 children were buried at a former residential school site in British Columbia, between 2021 and 2022 more than 2,000 unmarked graves were supposedly discovered at other former residential school sites, and media reports culminated in an apology from the Pope in 2022.

This has led to the burning down of more than 30 Catholic churches, mainly in British Columbia.

But, Canadian columnist Michael Taube writes in the Telegraph that three years later, no remains have been exhumed and identified, leading to scepticism about the initial claims. He says:

… for some on the Left, hatred of Christianity is growing stronger. They reject traditional religious beliefs and institutions associated with Christianity. They deplore what they perceive as authoritarian leadership among Catholic priests related to the tragic history of residential schools.

        They were Catholic scriptures until the 16th.century having been made canonical by Jerome and the early Church Fathers, then the protestant revolt occurred, but the protestants continued the principal beliefs of the scriptures, so maintained Christianity.
        But I take your point – it was first at Antioch where “they were called Christians” – but the term “Catholic” had been in use at that time – it meaning universal.

  That story went around the world, to the highest levels of government and was covered in the most prestigious publications.
  Today we laugh at the medieval people who seriously believed in ghosts and witches flying on broomsticks but even today with our modern technology we are still all capable of mass hallucinations.
  Another thing worth watching is how the story will be quietly walked back, then forgotten about and all those involved will deny they ever said any such thing and if they did, well it was somebody else’s fault.

  It doesn’t work like that. Maritime oil spill clean up is a highly specialized job, which requires skilled personnel and specialized equipment. The latter is not something easily found in an average RNZN person’s back pocket. It takes a while to organize, collect and deliver to the place as remote as Samoa and it takes a while to deploy.
  
  Besides, what “thousands tons of rubbish and plastic”? The quantities of “rubbish and plastic” will be negligible as most of it is being incinerated on board. The problem is fuel, hopefully most of it is still contained in the ship’s tanks. Pumping it out won’t be easy. Or quick.

  I certainly hope not, he is the gift that keeps giving and needs to remain in pace until at least the next election which he can fight on the basis of his preferred policies such as He Pua Pua, increased inflation, increased taxes and more government spending.
