  This is a ridiculous statement because it is based on the assumption that the current rate of change can be sustained. That is far from true.
  
  Analogy time:
  
  If you got in your car and accelerated modestly from 0 to 60kph (0 to 60 in 5 seconds), then you’re accelerating at 3 m/s/s.
  
  If you sustained that acceleration for 2 minutes you’d be going faster than the speed of sound.
  
  Certainly, Asian economies are going to continue to grow, but that will taper off with time. Simultaneously NZ seems to be on a slide,

    That is what they about the Tiger economies in the 1990s. Fast growth in the early stages of development then it will taper off -Don’t wrry.
    
    Meanwhile South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong are richer per capita than NZ in 2024.

        The horse has bolted with the hammer and sickle. Its use is widespread whereas the swastika was used as a symbol of governing political organization only in Germany and its display more easily controlled.
        As far as I’m aware neither symbol is banned here; if you want to walk down the middle of Lambton Quay with a Nazi flag, good luck to you!

  Article in WSJ about how the leadership of the teamsters in the US are desperate to support the Democratic Presidential candidate in the face of overwhelming membership support for Trump.
  
  This is another symptom of the Swamp , desperate to stop the Disruptor , in order to keep the dangerous status quo ( open borders , low wages , low productivity , high crime , broken society ) running.

  So far Biden/Harris’ CHIPS Act, to spend $52bn to revitalize the USA semiconductor industry is being the flow I expected.
  
  The lions share of this was supposed to go to Intel who are trying to keep their sunset x86 technology alive.
  
  Various breakthroughs over the last 40 years have managed to keep x86 alive, but the industry has now got to the stage where that is now hard up against the laws of physics and other alternatives (ARM, RISCV, etc) are so much more power efficient and cost effective.
  
  $52bn won’t fix that.

    The CHIPS act is a disaster. It sounded a good idea (to me) BUT the roll out has been so slooooooow that it has probably done more damage then good. Intel went on a major FAB buildout, expecting CHIPS money to help pay, instead it has had to cut staff and dividend to help fund the construction while it still waits for its share of the money.
    
    Re x86/
    RISC (Arm etc) vs CISC (x86) is a historic battle. x86 is now, for all intents and purposes, a RISC CPU. It has a small decoder that takes the old x86 intruction set and converts it into internal RISC instructions that the chip processes. The only real overhead is the decoder.
    
    Yes Intels fab has fallen behind, and with that has its performance lead. But x86 in general is far from dead. Efficiency wise (power to processing) x86 (esp AMD x86) is sill near top of class with only Apple outshining it recently.
    
    Much of Apples performance / efficiency comes from
    a) Always being at the best fab node at TSMC, AMD is one or more nodes behind.
    b) Close integration with the system
    c) Putting the system memory on the CPU.
    
    You will note that Intel is doing the same with its new Laptop CPUs, to be released within a month. This CPU reportedly beats current AMD CPUs running at 15w rather then AMDs 25w. Note Apple still wins the power battle on around 6w.

What is the reason that the 3 Waters remnant, the Maori Advisory Council to the Water Services Regulator, Taumata Arowai, still exists under this National-led Government?

Recently two replacement appointments were made to the Council, which hints at its continuing status.
Why no a Christian or Islamic Advisory Council on Water?

  It seems no Cabinet Minister, or even my local MP, wants to talk publicly about it. Later today I will hunt up a sample of the replies I got.
  
  I believe it is something we should be pushing hard for answers on.

Before any naysayers accuse me of misrepresentation please explain how injecting someone with a lethal drug to kill them isn’t technically murder.

    Aint that just the truth? As part of my research for a book 25 years ago I learned a lot about judicial hanging, specifically how to do it so as to obtain instant death through fracture-dislocation of the second and third verterbrae.
    
    In short, the heavier the man/woman, the shorter the drop needed. Anyone hanging themselves from a rafter in a garage, regardless of weight, will die by strangulation rather than a broken neck, and that can take up to 30 minutes.
    
    A close friend of mine did this 20 years ago. I am still haunted by the image of him kicking and struggling on the end of a rope for 30 minutes.
    
    I believe in the right of people to end their lives on their terms…but FFS don’t doing by hanging.
    
    (Of course I would rather no-one ever felt desparate enough to do it at all, but that is to deny reality. There have always been suicides, and there always will be)

      Don, I respectfully beg to differ. Assisted Dying is not suicide. In this case, the death is unavoidable, and the person dying is simply choosing the manner of that death.
      
      If you have watched a loved one go through the end stage of a terminal condition (you may have, but I certainly have) you will have an understanding of why assisted dying may be more ethical than letting a disease run it’s course.

    You think doctors being granted a power isn’t an issue? I find that divorced from history. Whenever anyone gets a power no matter the field he or she will always look to expand upon that power. This in the natural course of events and happens even over mundane of things in our society. That’s why I prefer government strictly limited. Now, you may be happy to grant powers to the State to overturn centuries and millennia of traditions that no one may murder (and look at the Crimes Act 1961 for the actual definition of murder in NZ), but once the ball is rolling the power granted to doctors today will naturally tend to expand.

    About half the states allow for automatic registration of *eligible* individuals to vote when interacting with certain government departments, including when obtaining a driver’s license
    One has to be a citizen to be eligible in America (not the same as NZ)

  In New Zealand many were registered to meet ETS goals. A year later they haven’t actually left the dealership network.

      55% of new cars sold in China are now EV’s or plug-in hybrids. It’s ICE car sales that are plummeting, down 28% year on year in August.

  plug in hybrids make the most sense – particularly if we could dial back the excessive emissions regs, oversized catalytic converters etc.
  
  Post about 2000 emissions regs stopped being a meaningful improvement in air quality, and were primarily a tool for big car manufacturers to prevent competition – creating a technological ‘moat’, and Politicians to virtue signal about how they were making them more stringent. It was only ever important in large metropolitan areas, and if we have plug in hybrids then they will mostly be operating on electricity in metropolitan areas anyway, so should be dialed back.
  
  Without the excessive emissions regs engine efficiency can be increased by up to 30% – which amount to a huge reduction in CO2 and fuel use.

    mcos… Range anxiety seems the most common problem. Overstated range by makers, in reality, hills, headwinds, passengers, air con, lights all kill the range.

    the marketing hype – in reality they have less range, they are more difficult to charge, they take longer to charge, they are unable to tow, left alone they will discharge, they are expensive, they require expensive fixing if the batteries fail. they are scrape metal if they are in a crash, the batteries can be problematic and render them useless. if the discharge while out they cannot be filled by walking to a gas station.- thats the first list.

  This sort of thing is a dilemma for families. A family can try and persuade a person in that situation to relinquish control of their finances but cannot force the issue. The only way to force the issue would be to obtain a court order placing his finances under control of a trustee, but a judge is going to need compelling reasons to take such a step. He would have seemed capable of managing his finances despite his disability although his disability may or may not have contributed to his poor decision making. A person not used to dealing with large sums can be caught in one way or another. For example a woman sold her house intending to move overseas was sitting on the cash (less mortgage) and could not resist spending a bit here and a bit there and realised belatedly that her spending had significantly reduced her cash intended to purchase another property.
  So a person who comes in the money may decide to invest it (wise decision), finds that interest rates offered by banks etc are rather pathetic and so Googles for something with a better return. So something like Du Val or worse still a scammer’s ‘front’ company seems just the thing and they jump in. It seems so good and genuine that when their bank says hey! look out, they proceed anyway then blame the bank when things turn to custard.
  So there is pressure for ordinary bank customers to effectively subsidise those caught by scams. There is a moral hazard here – people would be less vigilant and despite their best intentions would fall for scammers’ tricks. Unfortunately some people need to get their fingers burnt to save everyone else.

    peterwn: I recall some years ago, a senior lawyer in Rotorua losing NZD250,000 to a Nigerian scammer. Once he realised he’d been scammed, he went to Nigeria to try and get it back – and lost another $50,000!
    
    Turned out the bulk of what he lost was clients’ money, and he ended up getting struck off. The moral of the story is of course that anyone can fall for scammers unless they are totally vigilant.
    
    I would get at least three or four scam attempts by email every week – some are obvious, mainly because of poor English, some not so obvious. The “you need to pay $3 so your parcel can be delivered” ones usually originate from a server in some Eastern European country – it helps of course that in Tonga, I am NEVER waiting on a parcel!
    
    And whatever people think of lawyers, one needs an IQ well north of 100 to get a law degree – or at least a degree from AUT or Waikato!

      I understand another lawyer (from the Waikato) facilitated a similar scam on behalf of gullible clients. He loaned them $250k at 19% from a deceased estate and would receive $50k if the clients got their $x millions. He took security over a building one of the clients owned. When it turned to custard the building owner argued it was an illegal contract which the court agreed with and the lawyer had to repay $250k out of his own pocket after unsuccessfully trying to taint the estate with the illegality. You cannot make that sort of stuff up.

  Perhaps they should sue themselves for being negligent. If their son was “impaired” to the point that he could not make good decisions, the parents could have enacted power of attorney, had a dual authorisation on payments over a certain amount, or schooled him better in financial management.
  
  If he was well enough to not need a power of attorney, it was his decision to invest in a scam.
  
  If he was unwell and not of sound mind, and required a power of attorney, then it is the parents that failed.
  
  Either way, it is not the bank’s fault. And in any case ANZ spotted the scan and tried to reverse it.

I always wonder about the usefulness of earthquake scientists in NZ. Herald has “Hawke’s Bay zone for next big quake”. The scientist says at the end of the article “we need to be prepared for all types of earthquakes and their impacts”. Well yes. It’s NZ. We know this. So spending time finding new cracks in the earth’s mantle or zones seems futile when none of that changes the response required on the surface from us in terms of preparedness and town planning.

So Wellington is screwed and people who have freedom of choice are staying the hell away (I can’t say I blame them).

The “solution”? Force government “workers” back into their Wellington offices!

There are at least two problems with that:
1) Forcing people to travel kinda blows the whole “climate emergency” hype out of the water. If climate change really is the worst thing ever, then forcing people into traveling is the last thing you should want.
2) The better workers (ie. the ones you really want to keep) tend to have choices. They will leave. Those that will comply are the dregs that can’t get work elsewhere.

The other big question is whether it will help anyway. Will people go back to their pre-Covid behaviour of going pub crawling after work or will they just finish at 5 pm and go home?

  In my opinion WFH is a complete con. One of my clients is a major nz company. They require work from the office 3 days per week.
  
  There is no point in going to their offices on either Monday or Friday it is a ghost town. Furthermore there is zero chance of getting a response to any kind of communication before 12.00pm on Monday or after 12pm on Friday.
  
  The reality is that at best the entire staff is working four days a week at best.

    I don’t really have any issue with the guidelines. However my question is WHY do you want people to travel to Wellington to work in an office 5 days per week? A few observations..
    
    1. Government offices are hideous. They are crowded and noisy. Full of people acting the fool. They are not conducive to serious work requiring concentration. A good home office set up is a dream compared to that.
    
    2. For many agencies, all the staff would not fit in the office.
    
    3. Increasingly, hundreds of people have been employed who don’t live in Wellington. For example for several years, the Ministry for the Environment has had a policy of employing people no matter where they live. This clearly expands the talent pool.
    
    4. Forcing people to travel to Wellington to save cafes selling overpriced coffee and sausage rolls seems perverse.

    I would, if forced, be willing to spend two days per week in an office in Wellington. Five days per week, no way. 🤮
    
    The underlying assumption in all this discussion seems to be that folk working at home are somehow slacking off. In my experience, it is the exact opposite. Home is the only place that I can do serious work for extended periods of time. The only reason to go to the office is to build rapport with colleagues. That is important but it does not require 5 days per week, provided that you have invested in a high quality home office.
    
    In summary, anyone who thinks that forcing people into a Wellington office will lift productivity has never tried to work in one in the last 5 years.

      But for many if not most “workers”, WFH means popping up from the desk to put the washing on/ hang the washing out/ empty the dishwasher/ vacuum the kids’s room/ start the slow cooker etc etc. These many distractions eat into the 7 hours and 35 minutes paid for by you and me.

  The climate bit isn’t totally straightforward. 100 people in an office will use less energy in eg lighting, heating, aircon, computing than will 100 people in 100 separate houses. Whether that is outweighed by the carbon cost of their travel, depends on how they travel. At least some of this carbon will be included within the ETS, so won’t add to total NZ emissions anyway. It may work out as worse for the climate overall, but it’s not obvious that it will.

Here’s an insidious truth about inflation, that is never discussed as politicians smile and tell us they have this target or that target, and the rate is now falling due to their actions.
The prices for life’s essentials will never go down, unless inflation falls below zero – that ain’t gonna happen!

Two of the root causes, which they totally control via policy decisions, are energy costs rising which pass right through the production cycle of an economy, and govt deficit spending which is funded through debt and currency issuance.
If politicians worldwide firstly accepted that the overall cost of renewables, including upgrading electrical infrastructure to meet future demand and not yet having a battery tech that could actually meet storage and delivery demands, is not sustainable yet & adoption is before it’s time and secondly pulled in their spending below GDP the world would be a better place.
Trouble is they don’t believe they can do this and get re-elected.

  Food and such are challenging to make cheaper, especially with all the extra climate change etc hoops that farmers must jump through.
  
  GDP is a fake measure. It mainly measures consumption and not production. As a result, reducing spending would immediately reduce GDP and would lead to a recession.

  I was in a bit of back & forth with some Greenpeace clown stating that public transport is the way to go on X a few weeks ago. I pointed out that it would take me 2hrs each way between work and home and ~30 minutes by car at peak time, so
  I would lose 2-3 hours of family time on public transport.
  
  His response was “If it was more frequent then it wouldn’t be 2 hours.”
  
  Um, yes it would still be 2 hours by public transport, regardless of the frequency of the transport options, it would still follow the same number of stops, the same circuitous routes, and bottleneck at the same points. It would only mean that I could have more variability in my start/finish times.

Back home for a while to (a) see the family, (b) fruitlessly re-attempt to get answers from Ministry of Health cover-uppers (or should that be up-coverers?) and (c) continue my share of the cemetery circuit (no, not motorcycles – a small group of us are visiting every cemetery in the country to count the excess deaths – the casualties of the JODAD).

Because death and life are binary, and whatever kills you, once you’re dead you get buried or cremated with very rare exceptions. Figures lie and liars figure, but graves don’t.

But whoa! first things first – what in the name of Yipyip Ardern, the Baal-Demoness of the Death-Jab, have Pascall the NZ sweet-makers done with their jet-planes? The new “see-through” ones taste like fossilised wombat pancreas dipped in swamp-scum.

Anyway, for those (few) interested, New Zealand’s place in the world in terms of our leading number of excess deaths (by my rough calculations based on even rougher public health figures that the powers that be have reluctantly let be published) is in the worst five. Fer shure, Shirley.

And when even the British Medical Journal (not yer usual hotbed of pyjamas-media hyperbole) are asking why excess mortality has remained high in the Western World for three consecutive years, it’s interesting in a horribly bad way that all of our political and medical authorities in New Zealand are still and completely ignoring the rampaging medical mammoth in the kindergarten.

In another OIA (not mine but I am very grateful to whoever asked it) we are informed that in 2019 slightly over 2000 New Zealanders presented to emergency departments with chest pain. In 2020 double that number. In 2021, 6 times that number (13,000). In 2022 10 times the number compared to 2019 (21,000). In 2023 still 20,000. Grateful acknowledgement to the Hatchard Report writer(s).

That’s a lot of people with chest pain. And for those with poor memories, the Jab Of Death And Damage became available in February 2021 for older people and generally available in mid 2021. Mandates legislated it for all late in 2021.

There is clearly a close chronological correlation between the jab and chest pain. But a lot of people are cruising like Egyptians – up DeNial.

Still.

At some stage this order-of-magnitude increase in chest pain and related cardiovascular events which correlates so closely in time with the vaccine and the mandates, ought to lead to Ardern, Bloomfield & Co, having to explain themselves in court.

But.

I doubt that will ever happen simply because the whole of our government and much of the medical and nursing and legal professions are guilty, which is why there is a stunning silence in the land.

What is increasingly hard to forgive is that the trend continues as of right now/July this year – New Zealanders are still being told to submit to the Jab Of Death And Damage.

At what point will enough be enough?

  As you note yourself, many people – in fact these days it’s most of them – get cremated, and only a very few of those have “ash plots” in a cemetery. Most peoples’ ashes are either sprinkled somewhere significant to them, or kept on a mantle piece, as I have decreed mine should be when the time comes.
  
  Frankly – and I will never have another jab – your post sounds like the rantings of a conspiracy theorist who has fallen down a very deep rabbit hole – and is entirely unaware of it.

    The OIA results from deaths especially in clusters of age groups are not very helpful in separating out the premature deaths of the younger groups who have turned out to be more at risk from the mRNA vaccine, than from the coronavirus. Younger people are much less likely than older people to be simply cremated and ashes scattered or parked on a shelf (source: the funeral industry). And looking at (premature*) deaths *i.e. on an age group basis, is helpful to confirm or exclude underlying hypotheses.

    The problem with these folk is that their ‘analysis’ never stands up to scrutiny by statisticians. I am still waiting for someone to post analysis of a large scale data set that shows that mortality in the vaccinated is higher than in the unvaccinated. Analysis that has been peer reviewed by reputable statisticians who conclude “yes that COVID vaccine is definitely killing people.”
    
    If I see that, I will pay attention. But no, you get “analysis” of data shots received under the OIA and “analysed” by people who are not qualified to do so.

    I prefer to examine evidence from multiple sources. For example, Alami et al’s meta-analysis (of five studies) indicated that within 30-day follow-up period, vaccinated individuals were twice as likely to develop myo/pericarditis in the absence of SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to unvaccinated individuals, with a rate ratio of 2.05 (95% CI 1.49–2.82).
    
    I don’t see the point in providing you more links, unless we can have a rational discussion.
    
    But don’t worry, the wise authorities in NZ have protected you from ever being seen and treated by people like me 🙂

      No. It is not. This is the problem with antivaxxer hysteria. Lies become facts.
      
      The link that I provided is a UK study with a gigantic data set of the UK population – a sample of 46 million. It shows that those who had been vaccinated had, by far, lower adverse cardiac events than the unvaccinated.
      
      It is as simple as that.
      
      Hopefully in about 18 months the Royal Commission will report and kill all this rubbish. Although no doubt a Royal Commission report will not be enough for the antivaxxers.
      
      I don’t care of people don’t get their 6 monthly covid vaccine. I thought that the mandates were appalling. While IMO it is a very foolish choice, it is indeed your free choice. What I do object to is coming to a blog that was once a source for rational debate, and encountering such rubbish.         If the Covid vaccines were as effective as you claim, then there should be a decrease from cardiac events and myocarditis because of their effect.
        
        There is instead an increase in cardiac events and myocarditis.
        
        More than 13 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered in NZ since 20 February 2021 with 95% uptake by NZers.

    When I was at uni over 30 years ago, the world was apparently run by a shadowy outfit in the US called the Tri-lateral commission. This was of course many years before the internet, so there were far fewer conspiracy theories, but there were some – that Kennedy was killed by the CIA for example.
    
    (Actually perhaps that’s not such a good example, as even the American government now acknowledges that the Warren Commission’s findings were bullshit, and there was some kind of conspiracy behind Oswald and Ruby)

        To me the ‘deep state’ is essentially the unelected bureaucracy behind the scenes that implements govt policy and some of there own policy too. If the ‘deep state’ agrees with a policy it will be implemented promptly and supported publicly. If the deep state opposes a policy expect at least negative leaks, negative commentary and generally dragging the chain until the current administration is replaced.
        
        We don’t need to look to the US to see examples of this here.

      DG: Deep state is basically a variant of “Yes Minister” – the unelected government workers run the place and the politicians (who are supposed to have oversight on behalf of the citizens) really do not have the control they are supposed to.

        I have told the story here before, but when we were working in getting the Nats to support three strikes 1.0, at one point we got a briefing from justice officials who claimed that under the proposed law, the prison population would increase by 40% within five years.
        
        Making a longish story short, it eventually emerged that said officials had simply made the figures up, and that the real number of extra beds required after ten years was about 450 – out of a then prison population of about 10,000. So about 5% not 40%
        
        I well remember, when Rodney called the officials out on their bullshit, one of them giving me a look of pure hatred as they left the meeting.
        
        I have no doubt at all that both the Nats and ACT have been well and truly “captured” regarding the latest versionof 3S. Again as I have said here a number of times, if it is passed in its present form, three strikes 2.0 will make things considerably worse than they are now.

  Police dogs scar and disfigure people for life – happened to a guy I knew who was bitten on the upper leg while walking home from school by a police dog after another individual.
  
  Would we accept that sort of casual maiming from actual police? Police dogs have their place in taking down offenders with weapons or hunting out drugs or people absconding, but I think it should be fine for anyone to use reasonable force to prevent unreasonable injury – and biting with inevitable permanent scaring is unreasonable injury.

No surprise there; I would have been astounded if, on the evidence as reported, he was found guilty.

Open lies from the PSA honcho:

Public Service Association national secretary Duane Leo told Checkpoint Wellington’s woes were a direct result of the government’s “slash and cut” policies.

Much of the public service was based in Wellington, being the capital.

“This is a political reaction, blaming public servants for a problem that this government has created. The issue here is that if this government really cared about the Wellington economy, then it wouldn’t have cut thousands of hardworking public servants’ jobs. I think we’re at 6000 jobs and counting. It’s a total distraction.”

The Coalition government has reduced the public service headcount by only a fraction of what Labour grew it. The PSA creeps think we’re stupid.

In the weekend’s German state election in which immigration is a key issue, the Centre-Left’s Social Democrats (the SPD) have finished just ahead of the Far Right populist AFD party.

The Social Democrats, who have governed the former East German state of Brandenburg surrounding Berlin since reunification in 1990, scored 32 per cent of the vote, ahead of the Far-Right Alternative for Germany (AFD) on 29 per cent.

However, the Far Left party BSW, which, like the AFD, opposes entry to Germany of refugees, took 13 per cent of the vote. The two parties performed well also in state elections in Saxony and Thuringia at the beginning of September.

The Telegraph says that, on present poll figures, if in an election were held at present he AFD would become the second largest party with 19 per cent of the vote, and the BSW would win 10 per cent. “BSW” – for “Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht” – is a political party led by Sahra Wagenknecht, an economist and publicist who has been a member of the Bundestag since 2009.

The SPD is the party of Olaf Scholz, Germany’s Chancellor.
