    Maybe so, but despite the interminable sentences and tough prisons America still has a far higher murder rate than NZ
    Also in NZ there’s few murder cases that go unresolved whereas in parts of America it’s up around 75%. That’s because we have people to do the investigations and they don’t
    I talked to a Thai guy once who’d been locked up in Japan, which has a very low crime rate. He said it was very relaxed; like a hotel.

      MCos:Japan probably has such a low crime rate because the chances of apprehension is very high. Certainty of apprehension is a factor at least as important as the length of sentence i deterrence.
      
      That is why “broken windows” worked so well in New York city in the early 1990’s – much more comprehensive policing combined with “sentence enhancement” for recidivists, of which three strikes is just one variant. (New York is not a “three strikes” state, but they have something similar)

        Japanese society is also still very “monocultural” and hasn’t been enhanced or enriched by mass migration and societal division.
        
        Oh and they still hang their bad ‘ns. ( as far as I know)
        
        Another aspect is that unlike North America there aren’t literally millions of “undocumented” running about causing havoc.

      Are Japanese prisons really relaxed?
      
      I have never been to Japan, but I have watched a few videos of Japanese prisons.
      The interactions between the prisoners and the guards looked worse than I had at boot camp:
      * Prisoners are required to stand at attention and call the guard “boss”.
      * They march everywhere.
      etc etc.
      
      Japanese recidivism is extremely low. Maybe it is culture and society, but maybe it is also their prison system.
      
      There seems to be a lot of emphasis on the Japanese offenders admitting their failings, taking responsibility and making amends. No cultural report get out of jail cards.
      
      Our recidivism is the worst in the world, so clearly crims are not too fussed about coming back for a second (or third or more) serve.
      
      Ultimately the prison system (just like anything else) needs to be constructed according to what will work in the culture and society. Transplanting a prison system from, say, Japan to NZ and expecting it to give the same outcomes would be naive but that doesn’t mean comparisons are completely worthless.

Surprise, surprise. The BBC has been sprung as being heavily biased toward Hamas and against Israel. A report just released shows the BBC breaching its editorial guidelines over 1,500 times at the height of the Israel/Hamas conflict. The report names reporters, editorial staff and editors (some who have openly supported Hamas and their Oct 7 attack).Even some Labour Party politicians have been having fit about it. BBC are of course “investigating”.

  Here’s a relatively interesting piece about a joint article (and presentation) from the heads of M16 and the CIA.
  They cover the war in Ukraine, ongoing Russian sabotage, the rise of China, and de-escalation in the Middle East .
  Topical stuff.
  And then the last paragraph reads:
  “More than 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza since then in Israel’s ongoing military campaign, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.”

Paul Martin, the Catholic Archbishop, is entitled to add his signature to whatever political letter he wishes, including one that opposes ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill. However, he should acknowledge that he is signing it as an individual and not as a representative of the entirety of Catholicism in New Zealand. The Catholic Church, of which I am a practicing member, has no unified position politically on this issue and it is wrong for the Archbishop to misuse his position and title to suggest otherwise.

  It’s a tricky business. Should a church get involved in politics?
  
  In South Africa churches were very much involved in politics during the apartheid era. Many would say that’s very different. Some, however, would say it is not.

  No idea how old you are Nukuleka, but way way back in 1975 a group of self-proclaimed luminaries put their names and signatures to an open letter ahead of that year’s General Election that decried the Opposition Leader Rob Muldoon and opined that folk should opt for the incumbent Prime Minister Bill Rowling.
  
  Muldoon shot the group down in flames by pointing out, quite correctly, that the average Kiwi probably wouldn’t take too fondly to being told how to vote.
  
  And so it proved: The National Party, led by Muldoon, won 55 of the 87 seats over the Rowling rabble, luminaries included, in a landslide.
  
  Your Mr Martin should be very wary of what he says – especially if, as you suggest, he implies that all of Catholicism in this country supports his view…

    Yes, the Catholic Church is hierarchical in the line of the Apostles – there were no female Apostles; but that’s the only thing you got right. The ‘rank & file’ regularly have their views sought, and often things in the social justice & Common Good sphere are taken into account when considering any issue, provided the suggestions do not conflict with the Teachings & Traditions of the Church handed down from Christ through the Apostles, or the Natural and Moral Law.

The crux for the projection of a million fewer lambs next year – The main culprit, land use change, especially to forestry for carbon emission cost-offsetting, combined with red tape, high farm costs and volatile market returns, will pressure a restructure in an industry with too much capacity for tumbling livestock numbers, Affco national livestock manager Tom Young says.

So climate change and red tape are high on the list. Less export income, hundreds of jobs lost and broke farmers, not so much.

  Even without the lunatic carbon forest option a number of sheep & beef farmers would be doing something else with their land. The average Otago/Southland sheep & beef farm makes $20k pa. That’s average remember, which means a stack are losing money.
  
  NZ has prospered in the past by efficiently turning grass into wool, meat, and milk. Nowadays it’s basically milk with a by-product of beef for burgers when the cow has been sucked dry.

  Plus the social cost of declining rural populations – fewer shops, fewer schools, declining health services and the corollary of people moving to the city with all the consequences. While it should be a free country etc etc, I’d devise a plan to bolster the countryside. Pay a rural bonus to teachers, subsidise health care, that sort of thing. Screw the scrum in favour of the countryside.

A family is pissed off that the DHB didn’t tell them of a suicidal man’s deteriorating mental health. SHould they really have?

It’s a tricky business. Everyone wants privacy, until they don’t.

Every government policy from privacy to speed limits comes with pros and cons and we have to accept that if we want to have the pros that we also have to take the cons.

  Mental Health services are stretched and need a serious overhaul.
  My son (not suicidal) periodically falls off the rails purely because of lack of medication supervision. He will get transferred to another person who then fail to catch the full picture.

    Name and NIH number to access the persons file and then type in the latest information.

      Not mental health but hospital pulmonary specialist, my experience is that they give the file a cursory once over before the consultation.
      I see a specialist annually, it’s very rare to see the same one two years running.

      Unfortunately Child Mental Health Services have the same attitude. After my daughter self harmed several times (14yo at the time) and became involved in the service I asked specifically “If there are concerns she will self harm or attempt to self harm following her counseling sessions will you advise me and her mother?” and was told “it depends”.
      
      It is a very easy position for somebody who isn’t worrying about whether every time you open your kids door that you’ll be finding a body to take.

      Plenty of family involvement on my ex-wife’s side. Unfortunately that is where the self medication supply comes from.
      When I hear from him he wants money for alcohol and drugs. Money to the point of wanting advance on his possible inheritance when I die.
      A stink thing to do but my partner and I have purposely not included him in or wills. A half inheritance of our property would be blown in a year – drugs, booze, and gambling.

Well, what is getting even smaller is the Investment Fund he is involved in.
‘Bloomberg reported earlier this week that Mr. Scaramucci’s firm SkyBridge Capital had halted withdrawals from one of its smaller funds, Legion Strategies, which contains just over $200 million. But Mr. Scaramucci is also struggling to hold on to investors in SkyBridge’s flagship fund, the SkyBridge Multi-Adviser Hedge Fund Portfolios, which managed as much as $2 billion at the end of March. Its investments lost nearly a quarter of their value in the second quarter.

Investors in SkyBridge’s flagship fund are seeking to withdraw as much as $890 million, or about half of the money that it held as of the end of last month, Mr. Scaramucci told the DealBook newsletter. But many of those investors will be stuck in the fund for a while.’

  This is the problem with funds that are not listed on stock exchanges – value transparency is limited and/or the market value at any particular time is just not known. If a syndicate fund owns just one or two buildings who knows what the buildings are worth. A promoter of an active fund can pay out as requested (as promised) but has to shut the door if payout requests exceed new investments. If the fund is listed on the stock exchange (eg property companies) the investor can always sell but may not like the price.

In 2026 many voters will remember which party was willing to address the most critical issue facing this country in the long term (i.e what does democracy mean in 21st century NZ?) and those parties (National and NZ First) that showed the spines of a jellyfish.

  Labour persisted with KiwiBuild and capital gains tax long after everyone else in the country knew they were dead in the water.
  
  On a personal note, being a child of the 70s and 80s, I grew up being hammered, particularly by the Left, that racial discrimination was wrong – and they were right. It is wrong and we should never do it.
  
  I wonder how those same lefties now square that history with their current position – that racial discrimination can be right, when done for the right reasons, or is right when they do it.
  
  Of course they can’t. Ask them, as I have on many occasions, and they evade the question or quickly change the subject.
  
  Establishing in law different rights and responsibilities for citizens based on their racial characteristics is a reckless move and one which has and will continue to create massive division in this country. As a window into where it can lead we need look no further than Sri Lanka. The civil war there was entirely racially based, caused by racially discriminatory laws after centuries of peaceful co-existence, and led to an estimated 70,000 deaths and untold harm and misery.
  
  This is where your lot are leading us and Seymour has my deepest admiration for seeing this and trying to prevent it.
  
  If, heaven forbid, open conflict breaks out in this country, we should and must hold people like you personally responsible.
  
  Your blind zealotry and wilful arrogance is leading us into very dark places.

A source of amusement for some of us in the Deep South has been tone taken by the MSM on the QUeenstown pride parade. Before it started three youths took down three rainbow flags in the Main Street and this was reported as “deeply disturbing” a “hate crime” etc. they were also described as “mysterious hooded figures” which I guess they were technically but a quick look at the photos showed people dressed against the cold as you do in QT on August nights and a fairly casual looking attempt to conceal identity. Every second person in QT in winter has a hood appended to other outer wear. This is not a defence of their actions but my take is that the language used was fully intended to draw parallels with the KKK. On the other hand there is concern amongst health officials that a number of attendees at the event have had exposure to monkeypox. Not only has the MSM conspicuously failed to give this any real attention, the one paper who has (the ODT) has euphemised the situation by referring to it as “mpox”. Perhaps the technically correct health term but not the term known to the public.

The above decision by Ardern was made after a supposed nation-wide “conversation” in which the Ardern Government never exactly provided their side of the conversation, leaving a void which the media and others largely filled with mis- and dis-information, and in Ardern’s case: utterly no useful information – other than they were proposing sort of something.
No wonder it fucking failed.

Now the Treaty will be discussed without even a valid translation, it appears, of an officially recognised 2024 version in English of an officially recognised 1840 version of the Maori translation of the original 1840 English version.

Again nobody will have any idea what they are discussing.

  This letter hasn’t been organised officially by the Churches in NZ. It is the work of Grace Aotearoa, a group of Social Justice Warriors whose causes include climate change and colonisation. Their co-director, Alex Johnston, is an ex-Oxfam campaigner. They have asked and are still asking for Church leaders to sign their letter. The people who signed the letter signed it on their own behalf, not on behalf of the official Church.
  
  There are many thousands of Church leaders in NZ that have not signed that letter. While I don’t expect an opposing letter signed by Church leaders who disagree with this letter, the majority will not be in agreement.
  
  It was unwise for these individuals to use their title and Churches name to add credence to a personally held activist view.

  These factors are what the existing back to Australia, Secretary of the Treasury, Caralee McLiesh has said, and put forward, among other recommendations, and it appears that her wisdom was of course condemned by Robertson and Ardern.
  Simply we need more Taxation and some of it in some form of Capital Gains Tax, and our Retirement Pensions need to be looked at as the increasing financial amount exponentially is too great, as people are getting older and living longer.

        Yes it is interesting that the three Auckland Muslim Schools are subject to a threat so soon as after the media spent much time on the complaint that the Muslim Community in New Zealand is not getting the recognition they think they deserve like very many other ethnic grouping here also.
        Money, and in their case special treatment, as their community was subject to a sad shooting by an lonely Australian gunman, and that remains their focus point for more of everything.
        The other point that stands out is that in respect of immigration, inferring that as a result of this New Zealand is not allowing enough immigration of Muslims.
        They may well be right, but if New Zealand is wise it should seriously look around the world continuously, particularly in Europe, and the UK which is now heavily Muslims dominated in many increasing areas of their Society, where for example Sharia Laws now prevail, as a result of generous immigration policies over some many years

Also known as “the verse of the sword”. There are other similar passages in the Koran
      
      I have no knowledge of Jewish schools, but I went to a Marist one, and we were certainly never told to hate any of our co-religionists, let alone to “lie in wait” and kill them.
      
      Do I know that teachers at Islamic schools are teaching hatred and violence? No…do I trust whatever they say they are teaching? NO…principally because one of the tenets of the Islamic faith is that it is perfectly permissible to lie to the infidel to advance Islam

      Rumour has it – and it can be no more than that because Cindy’s government would never ever have admitted it – that a small number of those killed in the Mosque attacks were being closely monitored by the SIS.
      
      Secondly, there are only TWO ways a devout Muslim is certain to go to Paradise: 1) if he or she is killed while at worship; or 2) if he or she is killed while engaged in jihad, or holy war. This explains the seemingly (from our perspective) inexplicable: why Muslim mothers are not only not distraught, but are quite happy that little Achmed blew himself to bits along with some infidels. What mother wouldn’t want to be assured that her son was without a doubt with Allah in Paradise?

        Let’s assume that the lessons are in English though…the inspectors can’t be in the schools every day or even every month. And as I say, it is perfectly permissible – according to the Koran – to lie to the infidel. Police have arrested the guy who allegedly assaulted the Auckland bus driver the other day. Assuming he is found guilty, let’s hope the Judge (and any Appeal Judge) will ignore sob stories and hand down a decent sentence (and not home detention). Then the Union would not need to punish all those who use buses and drive away public sympathy.

    I just had a look through the various ‘assault’ parts of the Crimes Act. Cynically he would probably be charged with one that carries 3 years (it could be pushing it to expect 5 or 7 years). However there seems to be some stupid notion that the crim should be charged with the minimum available offence for the circumstances, meaning 1 year (Crimes Act assault) or 6 months (summary Offences assault).
    There seems to be some moves for higher penalties for those who assault firefighters, ambulance paramedics, etc. Hope frontline bus and transit staff are covered too.
    There was some incident where a cyclist was injured by s driver who worked for a sharebroker or similar. I seem to remember the judge criticising the prosecutor for bringing a higher level charge than the judge considered appropriate. This raised my eyebrows and I hoped other judges would try this. Anyway his employer ruled that his conduct and attitude brought the firm into disrepute and sacked him.

      Peterwn: Don’t forget that s.86 of the Parole Act automatically cuts all sentences of two years or less in half…which is in part why you see some of the better judges sentence to two years one month, so as to avoid the sentence automatically being halved, and forcing the prisoner to face the Parole Board.

The case I think you are referring to was of an investment analyst who seriously injured another motorist in a road rage incident by driving over him with his car and breaking both his legs. The jury convicted the defendant of the charge of which the judge was critical, so the judge was wrong. If you go to court some day, you will find out that judges regularly discuss the appropriateness of charges with prosecutors and defence, and have the power to discharge defendants if the charge is one for which there is insufficient evidence.
      In the case of the bus driver, it seems from the report that the defendant has been charges with Crimes Act assault, although given the injuries that the driver suffered, there are several other more serious charges that could be laid.

    PP, I understand the early Maori tribes were somewhat Nomadic around the era when the moa was hunted to extinction. I was told by an Otago old timer that the moas were driven by fire toward the swamps in that area where they got stuck in the mud and were easily killed. I guess after this big bird was eliminated and meat was scarce they turned on each other. Around the pa area they grew some vegetables but for what length of time is unkown because at all times a neighbouring tribe was readying for war.

  Paul like you I find the irony in the authors position staggering. I don’t appreciate the myth that Europeans are bad for the environment and Māori are much better. As humans we are equally capable of inflicting harm on our environment.
  
  All of the great civilisations were supported by the domestication and farming of animals. There were none of these natural resources in NZ until introduction by Europeans. To survive in pre-European NZ needed the hunting and gathering of protein – birds, seals, seafood. Not surprisingly these resources were depleted, in some cases to extinction. I’m balanced enough to realise it wouldn’t have been any different if pre-farming Europeans had inhabited NZ first, the Moa would still be extinct.
  
  The push to claim that Māori should lead Moa research is just more of the separatist racism that we are increasingly seeing. A cynical way to eliminate competition for research funding.

    The horse very nearly became extinct on the Eurasian steppes as it did in North America. Horses only survived because of domestication by Botai and later Yamnaya herders. The remaining descendants of the Botai horses still exist as some wild population. All other horses, wild and domesticated are descended from the Yamnaya horses. Perhaps we could have had domesticated Moas.

      I didn’t know that about horses – the powerhouse animal before steam power.
      
      I understand one of the most important elements for an animal to be domesticated is its ability to breed in captivity. This is something common to sheep, goats, cows, oxen etc. Some animals, like elephants are tameable but not suitable for domestication as they had to be released for breeding.
      
      Farms of Moa would be a sight to behold!

Put up on YouTube four days ago by the British naval historian Drachinifel, the video’s on the battle at Guadacanal between two NZ near-corvettes and a huge Japanese submarine (its tonnage greater than that of the little NZ ships combined).

The crews of the NZ ships Kiwi and Moa won, at a cost. This included the life of a young hero from Dunedin who kept a searchlight on the sub. Campbell Buchanan, of Dunedin, was awarded the US Navy Cross, the highest combat award for US sailors and marines after the Congressional Medal of Honour.

American divers recovered from the sub’s wreck code books that corrected or confirmed US cracking of Japanese naval codes.

  The reality is that for most households, electricity is a minor expense compared to other demands like the mortgage, council rates, car costs, etc. Why would they tie up $20,000 in capital, or more in solar panels? As prices fall, more will. The government should stay out of it.
  
  Also as Croaking Cassandra pointed out, the Co author of this report is the Reserve Bank chief economist. Doesn’t he already have a job?

      From an engineering perspective (ie. if you understand how the grid works), those are not good arguments.
      
      Unless you are also installing battery banks, then your home solar installation needs the grid to be present, connected and stable to provide both continuity of supply and local stability.
      
      Solar also increases grid fragility. That might seem counterintuitive, but that is the way electricity actually works.

    Lets do some simple arithmetics.
    
    My average annual power cost for the last 5 years is $1747 for the 2 persons household – all electric, no gas and log burner not in use in that time.
    If I was to install solar panels at say, $20000, it would take 11.45 years at my current cost of power just to pay for that. Assuming about $10000 for any roof alterations this time would be extended by another 5.72 years to the total of 17.17 years. But would such solar panels cover 100% of the power demand 24 hrs/day? No way, so a battery bank would be required, which would considerably increase the above cost. So the actual benefits would not be achieved before well over 20 years from the day of initial commissioning, when the installation would be coming to the end of its useful life. (No allowance has been made for any maintenance that could be required over that period).
    
    What’s the point of doing it all then?

      There is no sound business case for a home install unless you have to be off-grid and the cost of getting access to the grid is too high. I have worked out an approach where the payback is just over 2 years tho. You buy a 3kW system, no batteries, which you can get for $3k. Install it yourself which is not complicated and hook it up solely to the lower element in your hot water heater. All the juice goes into heating your water which is about 30% of your bill normally. You’re basically using your water heater as a battery. It does require a cylinder that has two elements one which is half way up the cylinder, and some practical experience with these things.

        Just the normal usage: cooking, hot water, washing machine – cold water only, but no dryer, a fridge and a freezer, a couple of computers and so on. Also a heat pump, which we do not save on running, especially in the winter. We have a log burner, but we haven’t used it for many years. The house is 2 storey, but we mostly use the top floor. And there are two of us.
        The electricity supplier currently charges 28.6 cents per kWh, plus the usual monthly add ons. The last bill, for August this year, was just over $170.
        All that Down South.
        
        When my son was still living at home the electricity usage was more than double of what it is now.

  Germany, they got started on a massive build-out of wind and solar electricity generation way back in the early 1990s – at a huge cost.
  
  By year-end 2023, they had total wind and solar electricity generation capacity of 148 GW, which is about 2.5 times average demand (of about 60 GW) and about 1.5 times peak demand (of about 100 GW). So surely, the days of fossil fuels in Germany must be numbered?
  
  Ooops – no.
  
  Despite the massive solar & wind capacity build above, the Krauts only get 43% of their electricity from wind & solar. So most of that ‘capacity’ is sitting their doing nothing most of the time (not much wind and sun in Germany).
  
  Lesson – you need base load capacity, which means solar & wind is really expensive as it hardly ever works.
  
  Now the Krauts are starting to replace all the worn out solar pannels and wind mills – ‘renewable power’?? I don’t think so! Keep mining those rare earth minerals for the stupid Germans…

Is the ‘Great Papamoa Skate Park dispute’ part of the evolution of facilities use.
Skate Parks were largely introduced to try to prevent skateboarders damaging community property and endangering the general public.
Giving them somewhere to practice without upsetting the rest of the people.
The item on the Papamoa Skate Park included footage that suggested limited use by skateboarders had resulted in it becoming a play area for toddlers and younger children.
This would presumably not have happened if the Park was normally busy with boarders and bikers.

    A case could be made for introduction of the CGT only if other taxes were to be reduced by the corresponding amount and an allowance was to be made for inflation. But they wouldn’t be, so it would become just another way of draining our pockets. And all the talk about “fairness” and such like is just a load of bollocks.
    
    As for “wealth” tax, apart from its inherent “unafairness”, it would by its very nature, be quite arbitrary. What constitutes “wealth”? How is the level of “wealth” to be defined? Who defines it? Is it going to be adjusted for inflation? How often and by how much? And so on and on…

      Yup. The big three – amounting to about half of everything – and roughly equal – are health, education and welfare. Half of the welfare spend is for the pension.
      
      To get real about this “more responsibility” the state would have to back out of a good chunk of all the above. Dole bludgers are of course a no-brainer but it’s not obvious what meaningful sums could be axed out of health or education. And of course the pension is sacred.
      
      It would be nice to see a rough analysis one day. Total spend = whatever. Category spends as above. Then how many billions would have to be cut and where would they come from? Using plausible numbers of course. Every little bit helps but cutting speed bumps and cycleways won’t get us there ….

Not one of the 440 church staff (not leaders, they are the paid staff) consulted me. Not one. I support the ACT bill. I’m also happy to support the opinion of the late Kiingii Tuheita that the ToW has no principles. It says what it says. Crown rules. NZers of all races can keep their property, we’re all citizens. Which is actually, Reverends, what the ACT bill says too.

  MSN complaining that Trump is threatening to jail election fraudsters. Shows you exactly what they are doesn’t it? They don’t want a fair democratic election, they want the appearance of one.
  
  A point to consider; If elections were actually fair in US then there would be no motive or need for Democrats to pack all election oversight and administration roles with Democrats. Their whole effort to install as many operatives in core election admin positions, and resist all legislative and legal attempts to install checks on enrollment, and ballot integrity are a very clear and loud announcement that they are intending to cheat.

    Celtic regularly beat EPL teams when they play them in European competitions. If they played in the EPL and earned the huge money that is on offer I think they would be competitive in a short period. They have a massive support and sellout the ground for every home game.
