Iconic bakery Pandoro closes its doors. Wellington City Council policies blamed.

“Our original bakery on Allen Street is absolutely flat because of the cycle lane and bus lanes coming off Cambridge Terrace,” he said.

Foot traffic had been killed off by construction work, cycle and bus lanes on Wakefield Street, on the corner of his Allen Street bakery, with the once-busy street now virtually empty.

  Leftists prefer big business, and hate small and medium sized businesses. This was blatant under the lockdowns where big businesses had their doors open whereas the rest were penalised like small grocers and butchers.
  
  The same goes for their petty regulations: to keep big businesses in power and to inhibit new businesses from competing.
  
  You could argue it’s in their self-interest, since unions only really flourish with big business. I personally think it’s their fascistic inclinations coming to the fore: where centralising business can only be achieved via being “big” – lots of small businesses are too hard to control under central planning of the State.

      And in the wake of more and more Wellington businesses, as but one example, closing in the last few days, can you just imagine the mess we’d be in if Labour got it’s chance to bring in the very deceitfully-named Fair Pay Legislation.
      
      Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of New Zealand workers whipped up into a lather by malignant union staff making reckless demands on employers and likely winning large pay increases much of which will be passed on to customers in the form of higher prices for goods and services – and at exactly the time when we’re trying to keep a lid on rocketing prices after the ‘cost of living crisis’ brought on by Labour.
      
      And don’t get me started on the chilling resultant effects in the form of layoffs and more business closures.
      
      We really dodged a huge bullet there.

      Agreed sherp. Wellington cycleways would be a great idea if the city was flat with extra wide roads and a frequent and reliable public transport systems. Both of which Wellington does not have.
      You do see cycleways working well in the likes of Vienna where they have both of those attributes.

      Even if we did have the population density, we don’t have the weather. People in Wgtn often say when it’s a fine day “you can’t beat Wgtn on a good day!”. This is because we’ve had so many days of wind and shitty weather, when a fine day finally arrives it has that extra je ne sais quoi. It’s the same reason a Saturday morning feels great .. because the 5 mornings preceding you’ve had to get up for work.

  I don’t think that Wellington can be saved.
  
  Pandora sold excellent but expensive products. Very easy to stop when times are tough.
  
  Same with coffee in Wellington. Pre covid coffee was about $4.50. Now $6.50. Again, easy to give up.
  
  Another example is Wishbone. Sold vastly over priced average sandwiches. Gone.
  
  No serious public servant would venture into the office to work more than about two days per week. Government offices are still crowded, noisy, with folk shouting at each other and wasting their lives in “meetings” of working groups with Maori names. In meeting rooms with Maori names.
  
  I’m serious. If your work is listening to people drone, sure go to the office. However, if you need to think, to solve problems, to analyse data, you cannot accomplish that in any government office that I have seen.
  
  While it may seem counter intuitive to those who have never been exposed to this nonsense, it is ONLY possible to do serious work at home.
  
  Of course this could easily be fixed with a few changes. Get rid of another 8,000 public servants. To those who are left…. . Unless you are in a meeting room, STFU and do some work.
  
  No none of this is hyperbolic. Totally serious.
  
  IF those changes were made, maybe Wellington offices would have serious people in them. Who spend some money.

• And, if Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po is to continue her father’s call for Māori to unite against government policies, should she not make a clear statement on the ‘principles’ (or that there are none) and a definitive text of the Treaty so the entire nation can see where any proposed legislation deviates from those?
Was that not the reason her father called for the Treaty to be legally enshrined in some way?

Will any New Zealand journalist ask Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po these simple questions?

  Why does the agenda have to be ‘coming together against the government’? Why can’t they ‘come together’ to achieve positive change for their own people?
  This group of people seem more interested on confrontation, fighting, anger, and inflammatory rhetoric than they do in coming together to solve their problems. Shouldn’t they focus on the child murder, criminal offending, smoking and alcohol abuse, unemployment, and other ills that are plaguing them? They’ll be healthier, happier, wealthier, and they’ll live longer if they do. Or are they just more interested in ‘fighting’?

Interesting to read reports about long standing businesses closing in Wellington. I just thank my lucky stars as an ex Wellingtonian that we got out of the place a couple of years ago.

I read with interest in The Post today in the article on Pandoro closing down, councillor Tim Brown, former executive at Morrison and Co investment company, try to defend the council and say ‘it’s not the council’s fault’ what’s happening to businesses there. Wow champagne socialist, much, coming from this ex businessman!

Unfortunately it’s the perfect storm of working from home, government cut backs and most importantly an incompetent council (apart from 4 of them…) hell bent on cycle waying every main road strip in the town.

I was shocked when I went down on my last visit as to the extent of the cycleways. Totally cluttering up formerly well functioning traffic ways. The whole town is clogged now. There was a permanent traffic jam going up Tory St which there never used to be.

I just compare that to Auckland where the only cycleway that’s munted the local businesses is the one going down K road.

I’m grateful for the work Wayne Brown has done in Auckland as he has quietly gone about trying to repair the city. Not enough is made of the 7% akl rates rise vs other towns facing 15-20% rises. The nz msm conveniently choose not to highlight Wayne Browns efforts in keeping akl rates down in their reporting.

Anyway I’ve come to the conclusion that Wellington is not the great little town it was when I was growing up. All the big business that were sustaining the place have long left and the only game in town is the government. And as we know the coalition have no choice but to cut jobs there and stop the subsidising of Wellington’s lifestyle on the taxpayer coin.

Will be interesting to see if the left leaning council gets removed at the next local body elections. I doubt it. Unfortunately Wellington is probably too far gone to be saved even if they do eventually get some dynamic right leaning mayor and council.

    Have the job cuts happened immediately, or are they still working through many of those? Did the come in from July1? What ever, you close a business not on what has just happened, it usually is a group of problems, but cafes and restaurants are wealthiest with great foot traffic, take cars off the road then foot traffic dissipates

  I was there almost a month ago – my old uni town that I loved. Apart from stunning weather, the CBD was as dead as a dodo and stuff in stores soooooooo expensive. I’m not sure how those businesses survive. Was verbally abused by heavily face tattooed guy on meth (I suspect) broad daylight Willis street – not going back anytime soon 😢😨

    As someone who had lived in the region since 1985 it holds no attraction for me anymore.

James Johnson is a UK pollster. He says that the polls showing Harris ahead of Trump are flawed. Their system is biased towards the Dem supporters who are more likely to respond. His system, which compensates for this bias (don’t ask me how) gives Trump a 2% lead where it counts. It’s a paywalled article in The Telegraph so no point in a link. While voting starts soon, my recommendation is “Don’t write Trump off – this going to be close”.

A textbook intended to foster multiculturism in Irish school children aged 14 and 15 has been withdrawn.

It’s been taken back by the publisher after an outcry because it contrasted an “all-Irish” family with and Irish family that is part-Rumanian and part-Dutch.

The traditional family is described as eating “potatoes, bacon and cabbage every day;” opposes change; and the children are told off if they mix with people of a different religion. Its two children are shown Irish dancing. All their relatives are Irish, and they are banned from playing “foreign games” or watching films made outside Ireland.

The Telegraph says the family is compared unfavourable with a mixed-race family, which is depicted outside Rome’s coliseum. That family eats curry, pizza, and Asian food, travels, visits art galleries, house-swaps with families in different countries and has relatives in London and Australia.

The publisher, apologising and withdrawing the book, said the textbook used “exaggeration and hyperbole” to help pupils understand Irish equality legislation and “importance of diversity in our lives”.

  When I was a kid our family was hardline catholic due to our Irish heritage, particularly my grandfather whose father was Irish.
  We ate potatoes everyday and a lot of cabbage! We weren’t supposed to mix with non-Catholics and certainly wouldn’t be seen dead in an Anglican Church. Curiously Mum was English and Anglican! Didn’t even try to square that circle.

      They took their culture with them
      As part of our early education I distinctly remember Irish priests telling us how evil the Orange men were.

        My Irish catholic family has a horrific story about how a a boat from the spanish armada washed up near where they farmed… the spanish came to their fellow catholics, my family, looking for refuge… but instead got fed to the pigs as if their protestant landlords found them harboring spanish catholics they would have all been killed or locked up..

    Your grandfather does not sound typically Irish.
    Both of my parents were Irish Catholics.
    My father in common with most of his fellow countrymen had big gardens growing all types of veg, not just ‘cabbage’. Irish women were also very good cooks learning their skills at home from a very early age, I often wish now that I had taken more notice of how my mother had made her sauces in the kitchen. As for the religious bigotry it was there but from my experience very unusual.

      My grandfather wasn’t Irish. His father was. He had a big vegetable garden as did my Dad, but their real passion was salmon fishing out at the Rangitata
      Dad met Mum in England after the war and he told her how marvelous the river was.
      Mum’s idea of marvelous rivers was based on the serene English variety with grassy banks and weeping willows so she was hugely disappointed at a river only an angler could love.

  Both he and my daughter are chefs..and they usually organise the Xmas dinner.
  A couple of years back his parents came to stay with them for Xmas at a holiday home in a remote seaside spot . They’d brought all the food they’d need with them for Xmas dinner.
  On Xmas-Eve, The mum insisted son take her into local town so she could do some last-minute shopping…..
  On Xmas morning my daughter got up to begin preparation for Xmas lunch, only to discover her Irish mother-in-law had already peeled about 4kg of spuds she purchased the day before and they were gently boiling away on the stove.
  
  Bugger the fine-dining Xmas dinner experience her son was offering up… she’d have her mashed spuds!!

    Reminds me of staying with my cousin and her husband in Dunblane, Scotland in 2004.
    
    We said we would cook New Zealand lamb chops for Sunday lunch. mrspdm got up and went to the kitchen to get a cup of tea at breakfast time to find the chops boiling on the stove. She was not happy but, we sucked it up.
    
    Then there was the time we cooked roast pumpkin on our first visit there in 1977. That went down like a cup of cold sick because you only fed pumpkin to cattle.

        sacha in 1977 we stayed in Glasgow with my Uncle an Aberdonian who had married my fathers sister who unfortunately died about 3 months before we got to Scotland.
        
        He mad porridge every morning and teased our 3 young daughters about having it with salt and no sugar,

      All too often, and this applies so much to us in NZ, we forget we as NZers have our own culture. It’s very much highlighted when you’re visiting a country overseas. Even Australia, it’s quite obvious. What we don’t do is celebrate our own culture the way that immigrants do. Maybe because we’re in our own country we don’t feel any need to and that’s possibly right and a good thing. What would not be right is to have our own culture here in NZ trodden on by trying to accommodate all aspects of others and where some aspects conflict with our own. In Palmerston North roadworks are going to result in what is likely to be massive disruption for Bunnings.
The main exit/entry into their carpack area is going to be closed, for road maintenance, which will affect over 90% of the users.
The alternative entry/exit, onto a major heavy traffic route, appears certain to result in monumental traffic flow problems.
Perhaps I am misjudging them.

        I’m still old fashioned enough to think that asking about another’s medical status is a breach of their privacy. It has only been in recent times people feel the need to share medical treatment status to show their moral superiority ie I am better than you because I took the vax or I am better than you
        because I did not take the vax.
        
        My personal stance is whether you took it or not we all should have refused to carry medical passports and not allowed the government to segregate us on that basis. If enough people had taken that stance the passport would have fallen over.
        
        Bars, restaurants etc would have quickly stopped asking for it if they saw paying customers walking away and refusing to provide it.

Health and Safety?
Yesterday while on a twenty km drive I passed two examples of excessive safety action.
In both cases, while travelling towards them, I saw flashing lights from over a kilometre away.
The first was a truck spraying the grass verge and accompanied by a second truck with flashing lights.
Both vehicles had attached warning lighting on their tailboards to direct overtaking vehicles.
On the second occasion it was a ‘Traffic Management’ truck, my day isn’t complete unless I see several of these, removing traffic cones and again followed by a ‘support’ truck.
Both with rear traffic indication lighting, arrow or 4 dots.
Why the need for two trucks?
Is it overkill?

      Today just between the Shore and Whangaparaoa there were 4 lots of road cones, 100M each side of nothing.
      Oh, Albany Highway road cones being removed at 12pm! But on the berm there are holes surrounded by fences. My bet is Sunday evening all of those road cones will be back, and two lanes down to one.
      This is how you create employment right?

    IIRC A few years ago it was costing more than $1000 an hour for Auckland motorway berm mowing to pay for multiple safety trucks, cone teams + lawnmower.
    
    This is the reason that taxes are through the roof while we can’t afford to build or maintain infrastructure or build or maintain houses at reasonable cost and it is badly impacting standards of living and ability to pay for essentials like health services etc. Unhinged spare-no-expense safetyism has gone absolutely insane with costs vastly outstripping benefits on any rational assessment of benefits.

    I live on the Kapiti Coast: last year, for many months, the use of the old State Highway One through Waikanae was restricted because the Kapiti Coast District Council decided to spend MILLIONS on a new cycleway/footpath over the Waikanae River. ( the fact that hardly anyone uses it goes without saying, but that is par for the course ).
    For months there was a truck parked on the northern side of the bridge, surrounded by cones and signs and lights , and it was occupied by some person who was either asleep or transfixed by his cellphone.
    He did nothing: he just sat in this bloody truck all day. For MONTHS.

Reminds me though, when is the name suppression of the nz political figure set to expire?

New York Judge Juan Merchan on Friday delayed Donald Trump’s sentencing in the Stormy Daniels case until weeks after the November elections, in just the latest dramatic turn for the former president.

The decision sets sentencing for November 26th, when Americans will have voted and the results of the election should be known. It had been scheduled for September 18th, which would have fallen just two months before Election Day.

The family of the 8 year old killed has filed a complaint over the police actions. Did the “alleged” killer actually live there, doesn’t sound like it and what checks were made, especially as he was reported as going onto people’s properties earlier that day. Doesn’t sound like they even spoke to the people at the home if they knew him, just dropped him off. With all the meth/mental issues these days you’d think the police would be more careful.
