      Not all royal families work in that way – and it’s not the worst idea. The two sons of Kingi Tuheitia have been in trouble with the law.
      
      However, how do you get to be a King without having a Kingdom? Really, he was just a paramount chief, and none the worse for that.

    Do they need a Maori King? Prior to the Treaty they didn’t have any one person in charge (e.g. King or Queen). Why do they need a Maori King in this day and age? We are supposed to be one. We’ve had Maori as Governor Generals, other Leaders etc. We have Maori MPs and leading in all walks of life. Surely having a Maori King is racist. None of the other ethnicities have a specific Leader.

        Suddenly in early 1850s after he went to London where he met Queen Vic, Te Rauparaha Jnr set out to create a King.
        Universal rejection from almost every tribal leader until they pressured an old man near end of days to begin the Dynasty.
        The rest they say is History as created by Maori for Maori.

  The whole concept is anachronistic. What nation or group anywhere in the last 150 years has thought, let’s establish a royal family and kingdom. If anything, across all royal family’s the reverse is happening. The idea will splutter along for a few more decades and quietly be assigned to a dusty corner in library history section where it belongs along with the rest.

If a business was completely in breach of its resource consent for the best part of a decade, the Council would throw the book at it.

The Council is in breach of its resource consent and all you get is reports.

Perhaps the relevant businesses should take the Council to court for failure to deliver on their obligations, not to mention wasting rate payers money.

  Napier Council chose not to do the maintenance to save money…the pipe blocked.
  Hawkes Bay Regional Council choose not to prosecute them for ongoing breach of their Recourse Consent.
  Napier Council then use the excuse that their Waste Water plant is overloaded (because its processing the trade waste ) as the reason they cant expand their residential land area.
  Utter. Total. Morons.

Another day, another 6 hostages murdered. The 6 mostly young people were kidnapped on October 7th and were alive only a few days ago. They were executed by shooting a day or two before Israeli troops arrived to rescue them.

So while Hamas is supposedly negotiating to an end of the war and freeing the hostages they murder 6 hostages in cold blood.
I’m reading a new book by Daniel Pipes “Israel Victory”. Pipes says that Hamas and the people of Gaza do not want a two state solution. They have been brought up to hate Israel and they want Israel destroyed.

It’s also interesting to me that people in NZ, who think they are enlightened “good people” are happy to come out on Sunday mornings and wave their Gaza flags. Even though the leaders of Gaza have just murdered 6 innocent Israelis in cold blood. The mind set of the NZers who still support Hamas is incomprehensible?

Hamas does not want a two state solution. They want Israel destroyed. That’s just a fact!

  The same goes for Israel. They hate Palestinians and they also don’t want a 2-State solution.
  
  Both have tried to live in a kind of apartheid state over the years. Divided to various degrees into Jews and Arabs, which was never going to work.
  
  Now they are both into the eradication game – looking to somehow eliminate the other and form a 1-State solution that doesn’t include the other at all.
  
  This has been going on for 2,000 years, and won’t end in our lifetime.

    Grunter – don’t agree. The Israelis are not taught to hate the Palestinians. Many are liberal and want to live in peace. They have tried appeasement, they have tried aid to lift living standards, they withdrew from every square inch of Gaza in an effort for peace.

  I see that there have been large scale protests in the streets demanding Netanyahu reach a case fire “to bring the hostages home”.
  
  I’ve not seen one cease fire proposal where Hamas immediately releases ALL the hostages. All I’ve ever seen is that they’ll release some, then a few weeks later maybe some more.
  
  We all know that in those intervening weeks Hamas would simply make another attack and it would all collapse.

  I wouldn’t advise a TSS and hopefully the Israeli government and people know how dangerous it would be since that’s effectively what they’ve had for 20 years since the Gaza withdrawal.
  
  Israel–a country *half* the size of Canterbury–would find itself surrounded not only by large antagonistic neighbours but intimately in contact with three rocket-launching, suicide-bombing entities in the form of Gaza, West Bank and Lebanon. That is, how would it be any different than now?
  
  No, Israel needs to settle the current situation and then reengage with Saudi for the peace deal that was derailed by the Oct. 7 attacks, its likely intent. Iran may enjoy another revolution at some point in the next decade and that will ease tensions considerably.

  Actually there were two states already. Israel had done everything the Palestinians wanted for Gaza. They had forcibly removed the Jewish settlements and the Jewish people, removed all Israeli military from Gaza. They established relations with Gaza like any other country, with normal border control and work visas etc. They did not build a border wall. It was a free Gaza.
  It was good trial run for a possible eventual West Bank solution.
  
  The Gaza people used the time (and UN money) to build tunnels and rockets to launch an attack on Israel.
  Hamas supporters say that if only Israel didn’t strike back, Gaza people could live in peace. Been there; didn’t work.

  To call them hostages is disingenuous. Hostages normally have chance of being freed for some consideration specified by the captors.
  Hamas have, and never did have, any intention of letting the hostages go free.
  At best they are bargaining chips. What they have seen and experienced Hamas cannot and will not allow to be revealed.

‘Heartbreaking’: Patients queue in cold from 6 am to see doctor (Front page headline, slightly less ‘heartbreaking’ headline on the actual article).

No further comment on the photos. But how did once extreme terms like ‘heartbreaking’ and devastated’ become so common they no longer have much meaning. And don’t get me started on ‘decimated’.

      Blitzkreig is a word I’d use to describe Ardern’s ACTUAL Maori outcomes achieved – in health, education, being victims of crime, economic performance, how much new public debt she signed Maori up to (as well as the rest of us) and division she caused among various communities – but we didn’t hear a peep out of the activists 2017-23.
      
      It’s completely political – and ‘the activists’ should be mocked and ridiculed for their double-standards.

  The queue outside Ōtara Local Doctors and Urgent Care starts building from 6am, with those waiting telling the Herald that trying to secure an appointment with other GP clinics often means waiting weeks to be seen.
  
  As has been said more than once here, waiting a week is not uncommon when trying to book a gp appointment.
  
  So what’s really happening is that people are trying to see agp without an appointment.
  
  As an aside, i got an email saying my gp fees are going up. Perusing their services and fee schedule, i saw several where the increased fee didn’t apply if you were Maori or Pacifica.
  
  When are we going to eliminate racism in the health sector?

    I think it may be that it is a more efficient use of the facility to not use an appointment system.
    If people don’t show for their specified time the staff may have to wait for the next one to turn up. Same if an appointment finishes early.
    Better having an uninterrupted supply.

  Can still hear the chief sub-editor at the daily newspaper complaining about the use of subjective descriptive terms, such as heartbreaking, dumped etc, used in reported text.
  Unless it is a direct quote from a person named in the news story.
  “The readers don’t care about what you (a first year out of training reporter) think of the situation. Just report the facts and let them make up their own minds about it.”

    I receive every evening , about 8pm, an email from “The Chief Content Officer- publishing ” , a person named Murray Kirkness, of the NZ HERALD.
    He submits the stories that he thinks are the Top Stories, today’s most popular articles and the stories “recommended ” for me.
    In the last week there has not been one story there in the recommendations that is purely political; just stories that show people’s despair with life in general.

  Weasel wording really. Maybe people started queuing at 6 (when the first person started the queue), but the photo was taken at, say, 7.30am when the queue was more substantial.

  People in NZ have zero clue what it is like to actually do stuff that people in many other places find commonplace. NZers (especially Aotearoans) bitch and moan if everything isn’t handed to them on a plate.
  
  Around the world, hundreds of millions of kids get up before 6 to do chores then do a 90 minute commute to school (starting at 8 am). Every day. In NZ they bitch and moan about hardship if they have to walk 20 minutes and get there by 9.

      Well not entirely. Their mums would have got up at 5 to make breakfast and put some food in their bellies when they got back from their chores.
      
      Here they live in comfortable state house (far better than 90% of middle class families lived in in the 1950s), complain about everything and demand the school provides them food.
      
      I’d really like to take the wingeing class in NZ to live in Africa for a week and see if they could cut it.
      
      In the tribal rural areas, 7 year old boys are out herding cattle on their own for the whole day – rain or shine. They have to face snakes, wild animals etc. They have huge responsibility thrust upon their tiny shoulders. Here 18 year olds can’t even get themselves out of bed.
      
      Why do you deserve better just for the accident of being born in NZ and not Africa?

    A few years ago I watched a, hmmm, cannot remember if it was a doco or a news story. Anyway. It was about the free health care group that travel around the USA. Before arriving in a town people started queuing two days before. There was one person in it who went every time they were in town for her chemo because she had no insurance.

    Have never not been able to get an appointment with GP. But then it’s rare that I’ve ever actually needed one straight away, a few days or even a week later is fine. There’s never been a time when I’ve needed to see a GP that it must be straight away.

  While somebody may have been since 6am (and stood in the dark) that queue is pretty typical of a 7:45-8am queue (which I suspect is when the photo was taken)

    Gravel: While Royalty is still a big part of Tongan culture, the Royals’ power is much diminished since control of the parliament largely moved in favour of the commoners in 2010. I say largely because the King still must approve the members of the cabinet, and the Royal Assent to legislation passed in parliament is not automatic as it is in practice in NZ for all practical purposes.
    
    As for religion, the greatly reduced grip the churches now have on particularly young people is one of the main changes I have noted after 20 years away. My two secretaries – both very smart young women – go to church when THEY wish to, not on Daddy’s orders, which was the case 20 years ago.
    
    (All singles live with their parents until married. There is no flatting culture here).

      What about the rugby?
      At the time I was there, the Tongan rugby team played the All Blacks (in NZ).
      There was a public holiday declared in Nuku’alofa and the locals spent all day and night driving round in various decorated vehicles yelling out support for their team.
      Visited the NZ High Commission who were busy organizing a special TV connection so that the locals could watch the game live.
      Tonga team not successful, but party was good.

      I sailed to Tonga on a family friend’s large yacht some 30 years ago and spent several weeks puttering about, but I haven’t been there since. One of the outstanding impressions on my young mind was the absolute death of the place on a Sunday, churches excepted. Is it still that way?

  It’s all about building class solidarity comrade, but with a new type of class basis called Intersectionality rather than the old pure Marxist one where the only oppressors were capitalists and the only oppressed were labour.

    I remember learning in 7th form history in the mid 1990s (the brief segment on NZ history before we got onto the serious business of Elizabethan England) that Maori, when they learned about Christian religion from the colonial era missionaries, quickly identified with Old Testament Jews.
    
    So they identify with both sides and ultimately with whoever can be commonly seen as the victim at the time?

“Only China, the United States and India produced more emissions from fossil fuel than the Canadian fires, according to the study,….”

So growing trees to help reduce global warming has its downside.
Especially when the vegetation around them is allowed to revert without control.

    There’s even a worse fad of planting natives.
    
    Commercial farming makes some sense (assuming for a bit that the whole carbon thing is true). The vast majority of the carbon is captured in the wood and ends up captured in the buildings etc it goes into until the house burns down.
    
    In native forests:
    A) the growth rate is much slower so more effort for less results.
    B) the wood is not used commercially. When the tree eventually falls down it just rots, up converting much of the CO2 it absorbed into worse methane.
    
    But guess which Wellington city council (and other virtue signalling organisations) do to “offset” their CO2 emissions.

  Naah, Canada’s wildfires are accounted as carbon neutral because the trees will grow again soaking up all the carbon.
  
  What happens on the carbon accounting spreadsheet is not necessarily what happens in the atmosphere though.
  
  And you’re forgetting the millions of tons of methane emitted by leaves rotting on the forest floor. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

  If you use a paper bag in the supermarket, you will get the carbon back into the atmosphere within weeks after your weekly rubbish collection. The tree that produced the pulp that made the paper bag was planted about 25 years ago so the effort to capture carbon was a giant waste of effort.
  The tree that produced your paper bag was only grown to harvest carbon credits on steep unstable sheep country. The slash from your tree slash exacerbated the recent flooding on the East Coast.
  
  That is why I choose to sequester the carbon of supermarket bags by using plastic bags. The carbon will be locked up for centuries.

    Loss of sheep is huge in NZ. One farming paper just this week is bemoaning the loss of one million ewes in this country,
    Sheep have clothed and fed humans for thousands of years.And also their grazing habits have reduced the spread of weeds including wilding pines throughout non arable land.
    Their exports have made a huge contribution to the wealth of this country . Meat and wool.
    Sadly with globalisation NZ is happy now to accept the crumbs offered by tourism and immigration.
    NZ productivity has tanked and the sheep is the major casualty.

The carpenters, welders, plumbers, sparkies, concreters etc are going to be right pissed off. When something needs fixing you don’t call a Marxist professor.

An altercation is a fight or a quarrel. That kinda implies a reasonably balanced conflict.

For instance, you wouldn’t say that a 37 year old had a fight with a baby.

It is hard to comprehend any situation where a 37 year old ends up killing an 8 year old and that is an “altercation”.

All I can think of is that two adults were in a fight and somehow the kid got killed as a side effect.

I don’t care a jot of rugby or concern myself about which team wins, but I find some of this interesting.

Why should the haka expect respect by people in a far away land?

Yes, there was a time when the haka was part of the theatre of rugby, but is that still the case?

The only time I have every watched in international rugby match in person was watching the NZ rebel team at Ellis Park, Johannesburg in South Africa in 1986. Since they were not an official NZ team they were not allowed to wear the All Blacks uniform or perform the haka.
The team did a haka anyway, which was enthusiastically cheered by the crowd – I suppose because it was an indication that this was a “real” NZ team that was about to be defeated.

It seems that the NZ rubgy players and officials expect the whole world to bow to their wokeness.

  cmm: At least the haka prior to a rugby match is being performed in appropriate circumstances, viz. as a challenge prior to the modern equivalent of a battle.
  
  Personally I find it utterly embarrassing when something similar – with much eye rolling and tongue pointing – is done as a supposed “welcome” for overseas personages.
  
  I remember cringing with embarrassment many years ago when the band Dire Straits was “welcomed” with such a performance at Auckland airport. The “welcome” included one of the overweight welcoming party shoving Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knoffler – to his utter bewilderment.
  
  By all means welcome those from overseas with a totally incomprehensible powhiri if they must,,,,but eye rolling and tongue extending should be done away with. Without some instruction, no-one from another culture would see that a welcome.

    DG you would have loved the performance at one of my clients’ offices.
    
    It is an international company and their new American CEO absolutely drips with wokeness. As soon as he came onboard they added 3 “wellness” staff in their NZ office alone, quotes Mandela in his inspirational speeches etc.
    
    So when he came to NZ for his first visit as CEO they decided they need to give him a “proper Maori welcome”.
    
    The office has approx 5 to 10% Maori staff – none of whom can speak the lingo or knew anything about proper protocols etc (or at least would not admit to it). Some of them could sing a few works of greeting so long as they were allowed to mumble most of it. Judging from the size of one of them, she’s probably also skillful at unwrapping a hangi.
    
    Thankfully though there were two white guys – one NZ born and the other an immigrant from South Africa – who were reasonably fluent in Maori and had a reasonable understanding of protocol. They ended up with doing the “genuine Maori welcome” with which the CEO was enchanted no end.
    
    I was invited, but I doubt I could have bitten my tongue through the whole ceremony.

  If you want to know why Māori have relatively low life expectancy, compared to the rest of the population, take a look at the results of the NZ Health Survey.
  
  The results show that Māori are several times more likely than other population groups to smoke, drink hazardously and use amphetamines.
  
  It would be good to life expectancy numbers standardised for these behaviours, but I suspect they wouldn’t suit the narrative.

  The same people who end up choosing poor health practices also tend to make poor financial choices, poor career choices, poor educational choices, poor relationship choices, poor behaviour that leads to legal trouble, etc etc etc.

Something totally different. I drove up to Whangarei on Saturday unexpectedly it was beautiful weather. I travel there many times a month and have got use to the road works on the Brynderwyns and on the entry to Whangarei with both going on for years. Absolutely no work being carried out at either place. Surely the work should be carried out 7 days a week I would argue 24/7 as happens overseas. Why do we suffer from this awful work ethic. Is it lack of people, having to pay penalty rates its nuts. Suspect this occurs throughout New Zealand. Projects taking years there is no urgency.

  There’s obviously a reluctance (or no need) to put road cones away overnight or over the weekend , hence the frequent malaise experienced by a taxpayer of driving through intervals of road cones which protect invisible workers. Or perhaps it is a legal requirement to have the cones from go-to-woah during a project.

    100 becomes 1000 in the morning, so where shall they be stored? On the roadside of course!

According to something in The Telegraph, the UK police morale is low and they were losing frontline staff at an alarming and unprecedented rate.

That was back in June or July – before things really kicked off. I suspect the numbers are far worse now. It would be interesting to see what the numbers look like when they get reported at the end of this quarter.

Over many decades of consuming media reports of events(Some that I have been intimately involved in, on 2 occasions involving fatalities).

I am extremely suspicious of any media reports issued immediately or soon after the event.

On both occasions, of fatalities, I was able to correct media reports ascribed to police or indeed created by a journalist looking for a sensational headline.

IMHO it’s best to wait a minimum of 48 hours, preferably 7 days, to get a clear picture.

Recent items in that category are the assassination attempt of Donald Trump

And very recently, the deaths of 6 hostages in Gaza.
The first (so far only) reports are from the IDF publicity machine.

Who knows what actually happened. MSM are touting murdered by Hamas.

The small print from IDF say they were killed just before invading IDF troops(in a firefight) arrived at the scene.

It will be interesting to see if the hostages were
1. an unwitting side part of the firefight.
2. Executed by Hamas operatives to signal that rescue attempts by IDF would be hopeless
3. Executed by a pissed off wounded rebel

If you actually want to make the case that “lawfare” was the reason for such a meagre success rate you’ll need to present evidence for your claims.

Some of the cases you are putting in the “didn’t make it to court so can’t be classed as a loss” basket were withdrawn. That is not a win for Trump or evidence of “lawfare”.

When you express your opinion in the form of a bald ass claim such as “rejected for so-called lack of standing. This is a time-honoured way for a partisan Democrat controlled court to appear to be doing their job but in reality, they did not want to see Trump’s lawyers bringing forth any evidence of voter fraud.” without anything to support it, why would anyone bother spending time refuting it?

A better use of your time would be to look at the still current, still ongoing defamation cases resulting from the fraud claims made after the 2020 election.
