Government sovereignty
Democratic government can accommodate Maori political aspiration in many ways. It can allocate resources in ways which reflect the particular interests of Maori people. It can delegate authority, and allow the exercise of degrees of Maori autonomy. What it cannot do is acknowledge the existence of a separate sovereignty. Many decades ago, in high-school geometry and algebra, teachers tried to din into us the principle of corollary – a proposition that follows from one already proved – so what is the deal with Luxon and those that will not support ACT’s proposed Treaty bill?
If Luxon won’t support a law that clarifies Government has the right to govern, all legally acquired property is protected, and all New Zealanders have equal rights and responsibilities, is the corollary true?

  It would take 15 years+ to get a nuke power station up and running so you would need gas for at least a decade and a half. Also there is no point in moving away from gas until replacement non-thermal power generation (and buffer storage) is in hand.
  Interestingly PowerCo is replacing gas meters in Wellington with remote reading electronic ones (using lithium batteries that are claimed to last 10 years). So PowerCo and the gas retailers do not think the gas network will be shut down any time soon.

    That doesn’t mean that the pipe network will carry indigenous natural gas.
    
    It could carry imported LNG. I read somewhere a possibility of adding a bit of Hydrogen to the methane to make it go further. It could carry a completely different product.
    
    And in any case, smart meters just remove the need for expensive meter readers as new connections to mains gas are falling off a cliff

      Whatever new gas is put into the network would need to be chemically similar to the current gas. This would be achieved by appropriate blending. Hydrogen could be problematical as a significant portion could leak out of the mains.

    peter, all modern aircraft carriers and submarines use nuclear to create the heat to power the vessels. So clean and so economical it would be insane to have them running on oil fuel.

      I can see your general point, but you are wrong about all modern submarines (I guess you mean military subs) and aircraft carriers running on nuclear.
      France, Germany, Italy, China, Japan, India, Australia and Sweden have all built either modern submarines, aircraft carriers or both that run on some sort of diesel power.
      The big disadvantage with nuclear is that you are locked into a highly expensive fuel cycle. If you don’t control that fuel cycle you can’t guarantee your ships will run.

    So now there is some Australian ‘expert’ who is warning on ‘gas is not the way to go’ and warning against importing LNG and would like to give Simeon Brown a piece of his mind on this. Simeon’s response would surely be ‘I need to find a solution for NZ’s energy needs as soon as possible, not years down the track.
    Just another pie in the sky ‘expert’ who says all the things that should not be done but has no idea about sorting immediate problems.

  Only one-third of gas is used for electrcity production. The remaining two-thirds is used for other things, notably petrochemicals and fertilisers. Even if New Zealand adopted significant nuclear power generation, gas would still be required for those things.
  
  Question… Have you seen any analysis that demonstrates that nuclear power is commercially viable in New Zealand?

        Not an expert but a quick search on Google seems to show that a Small Modular Reactor costs about US$2500 per KW (NZ$35M for a 20MW SMR).
        
        If true, then the cost of nuclear would be approximately twice of solar but will create energy 24/7 and quickly pay for itself.

        Finland is a country with the similar population to NZ. Urbanization is also similar at about 86%. They used to import electricity, originally mainly from Russia and later from Sweden. At present there are five nuclear reactors in two power stations, with about 95% capacity factor. It is expected that in a couple of years nuclear power will generate approx. 60% of their total electricity requirements.
        So, may be Finnish experience is worth looking at to see whether some of it could be applicable to NZ?

        Finland with NZ’s population has 3 nuclear power stations. Japan has nuclear despite earth quakes.

        You are missing the point.
        
        I am asking whether you can cite informed opinions. There must be people who have worked in the sector for decades. They will know enough to have a view as to whether nuclear power generation might be viable in New Zealand.
        
        I couldn’t come up with an answer to that question.
        
        Here is another question. Is such a nuclear power station profitable without the government underwriting the costs? If the answer is yes, surely the existing power cos would have looked into it. There is no law prohibiting the construction of a nuclear power plant.
        
        I am not saying you are wrong. I just have not heard anything to tell me that you are right.

        Ben – the old Ministry in charge of Electricity decided Nuclear was viable in NZ in the 1960s, had identify a good site on the Kaipara for it.
        
        Its economically viable in a world of every increasing cost for Carbon Credits or one without those credits. Its whether Politicians have the guts to actually front a discussions to sell it and overcome hysterical Green objections

      Informed not expert opinion.
      Finland is a poor comparator because it’s hooked into a larger continental mass so has the ability to import or export power – this is relevant to NZ as we have to match supply and demand every second within our grid – if they have too much they export it via an inter connector. Fluctuations still have to be managed but over a much bigger grid made up of multiple systems, it’s way smaller issue.
      
      I do t know much about SMRs except what people here say – they are not available yet. Until they are the size of the nuclear station is a constraint because these are baseload plants. To run a secure system there is always a spare amount of capacity available to cover the loss of the single largest generating unit or HVDC circuit. At the moment the single largest contingency is normally set by a unit at Huntly – say 250-350 MW. The economic size of a nuclear plant will probably still be at least double that which means the “risk” will now be say 600 MW. We don’t have 600 MW of capacity that can operate within 1 second as required to be a reserve provider so another large, fast acting station of some sort would be required to be constructed to sit on standby at all times. Thus destroying the economic viability.

      The work has been done historically also but cost/size issue has always been the issue – we can’t make it work given the current economic size of nuclear plants.
      When SMRa are available the situation changes perhaps.

        They do tiny (my words) 15MW power eneration that has the following advantages
        
        1) Put it close to the demand as it saves massively on transmission costs
        2) Proven technology in use for 35 years
        3) Uses waste fuel from other reactors of which there is enough to power the entire world for 1000s of years
        4) Incredibly safe
        
        The concept is to put these near demand, such as data centers. They can add reactors as the data center expands / is built out.
        
        Watched an Australian video on Nuclear power posted on this site, they claimed the biggest cost of electricity is actually transmission. Placing lots of small reactors near demand means Transpower doesn’t need top build out its network.

    Luxon talks the big game about doubling renewable energy generation by 2050 and being 100% renewable. He talks about doing this with Wind, solar and perhaps mini hydro. Thats his words from tv this morning.
    
    It’s just not realistic and there are plenty of studies that prove it. Areas that have gone 100% renewable have expensive and unreliable power. They are dependant on other areas that haven’t gone 100% renewable.
    
    The best energy systems have a mixture of generation sources. They have base line generation this is stable and sufficient to guarantee reliable power. When you have these systems you also have cheap pricing.
    
    If we look at NZ and Luxons ‘plan’ where is the 50% increase in baseload power coming from? He says gas is transitional so when it goes by 2050 what replaces it? We know its not hydro as has says ‘perhaps some mini hydro’, so where in the governments ‘plan’ does the additional baseload come from?

      We need another (at least one) Huntly sized gas or coal plant. Geothermal could help but the size of these (dictated by size of the underground resource) means we would need quite a few and that will be a lot of payments to the special people.

        No. I am all for generators paying. But what happens, as per now, when the generators focus on the cheap and easy Wind and solar? Where does the baseload energy come from?
        
        My issue with Luxon is his blinkered approach to power generation. He says eventurally no coal of gas, he says mini hydro (maybe). So where in his plan is the additional 50% baseload coming from?

      Yes Megan Woods is a total disaster for NZ. Ironically the labour party PR channel TV1 this morning was going hard on Luxon as to when he was going to solve this issue (the issue being high power prices, not a shortage!) and how he is getting us to carbon zero.
      
      No mention of the giant elephant in the room. Its not like we werent short of power last year or the year before!

    Will Small Modular Reactors Surpass Regulatory and Supply Chain Hurdles to Fill the Need for Stable, Baseload Power?
    
    Estimates suggest that CAPEX costs for these reactors can be up to $5,000/kW with a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) ranging between $80-$90/MWh. For comparison, offshore wind costs between $3,000-5,000 per kW to construct, and utility scale solar costs between $700-$1,500 per kW in the U.S.
    
    The difference being nuclear runs 24 hours a day while wind seems to be producing typically some 40-50% of its headline capacity and solar by definition less than 50%.
    
    While some reactor costs are high, innovators are looking to reduce costs by developing new reactor designs and technologies using various coolants and fuel types for Gen IV reactors. Costs for these reactors vary but some suggest they can be reduced to $2,500/kW for upfront CAPEX costs and LCOE costs around $35/MWh if they were to scale.

      I will add that apparently transmission is a huge part of the cost of electricity. Wind generation is dispersed to often remote locations. So requires expensive transmission lines etc (and energy loss). Nuclear can be positioned near demand to minimise these costs.
      
      I note NOBODY in the green camp ever talks about the transmission costs of wind and solar. I suspect, based on your numbers, that if these were factored in Nuclears cost would be lower.

        The transmission cost is significant but a fraction of the generation cost. Wind farm sites are selected based on wind data and proximity to the transmission (or distribution) grids to minimise cost. There are plenty of sites that are close enough.
        
        Yes it restricts location but in the same way that power stations need to be near gas lines or railway for coal. Or hydro needs to be on a river 🙂

      Just checking, is that the cost per kW for when the wind is blowing at the correct speed. That is to say, the capacity of the windfarm.
      
      If it is the cost of the capacity, then the actual cost is at least three times that, as the typical capacity factor for a wind farm is 30%. When they are new.
      
      Then you have to add in the cost of building the back up power station for when the wind isn’t blowing. This needs to be dispatchable so coal, gas, geothermal or nuclear will do just fine.
      
      Also, they usually do not include the cost of transmission of the power from the windfarm to where the power is needed.
      
      I get the impression many believe we can solve the lack of generating capacity if we can just build enough wind and solar. Nothing could be further from the truth.
      
      Another point to remember is that the more wind and solar, the more difficult and expensive it is to control the frequency. The more wind and solar you have, the less stable the grid.

        It’s the cost per installed MW. But operating costs for wind are low compared to coal or gas so these result in the long run cost per kWh produced being in the same ballpark.
        
        Geothermal and nuclear are not generally dispatchable. I do t think highly efficient coal and gas plants are either (or only a small amount). Hydro does all the work providing reserves and frequency control, along with the Rankine units, I believe.

        You have fallen for the kWh trap. Electricity has to be produced when it is needed.
        
        Geothermal and nuclear are indeed dispatchable. A dispatchable power supply is one that produces power when it is turned on.
        
        NZ is one of the few countries where wind and solar are not completely insane because we can save up some water in the dams for when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining, but we don’t have sufficient hydro to back up the W&S we have now. That is why we need Huntly. If demand increases and we build more W&S, we will need more back up power.

        So do I. The problem is this is very misleading. It makes building W&S seem to be a good idea when it is not.
        
        The question that needs to be answered is “How much does it cost to produce a given amount, say
        1 MW of of consistent power using W&S with back up from dispatchable sources?”
        
        The answer is “a lot more than if you do it without the W&S.”

        No I have not fallen for the kWh trap. I know the difference between LRMC and SRMC, you have misunderstood what I said.
        
        Dispatchable means you can instruct how much to generate each dispatch period . You can’t really do that with geothermal, it’s baseload with little efficient variation. Dispatchable demand is demand that can quickly reduce on instruction.
        
        Wind and solar are not dispatchable – as you say, they have to generate the amount needed when needed to be so.

    nuclear power is a problem for a small country like NZ because economic reactor designs like the AP1400 with 1400MW output represent such a large fraction of demand (~4GW nighttime 6GW daytime), meaning we would also need equivalent backup (ie gas or coal) generation to cover when it is offline.

      That said two AP1400s would be pretty good for NZ. When one is scheduled offline for refueling, Hydro can take the slack. Also, I believe the Canadian Cando reactors have no or very limited down time.

        But most of the costs are in appeasing Nimbys and the vast hoards of other regulatory gate keepers and grasping hands (brown and green-mail). Those costs are basically the same no matter how big the reactor.
        
        Hence small reactors are nearly the same cost as big ones.
        
        It would make sense to have three or four smaller reactors in a single installation to deal with unit outages.

      This has been my argument.
      Wind power is a problem for a small country like New Zealand because we need the same capacity standby generation for when it is offline. Wind power goes offline on calm cold mornings which happens to be the time of peak electricity demand.
      Most wind power countries eg UK can cheat by using French nuclear power via the interconnector; not so New Zealand. We really need max capacity standby generation.
      
      The current industry “wind first” settings are such that there is no point in building standby generation plants without a standby payment. It is crazy to build a standby plant when the government is promising to fast track even more wind power.
      
      We have simply reached the utterly predicted tipping point where standby generation capacity is longer enough to provide power when the wind drops. The situation has been masked by shutting down industry and by asking hydro to empty the lakes faster than sensible.

    1977 the Ministry of Energy did a big report into it. Concluded it was viable, More expensive than coal, cheaper than oil (wind and solar were not even a glint in the eye back then)
    
    I think there was even a Royal Commission into nuclear energy in 1977/78

      Cogovernance in fast track? Let’s wait and see. The Coalition has dismantled much of the cogovernance agenda and I think we should withhold judgement.
      
      Green energy and renewables? I agree with you there. However national did not pledge to end the emphasis on climate change. They are a broad church party and need to have room for the green wing on the centre right.

  New Zealand could simulate a SMR now.
  Run Huntly at max (750MW) full time, take all the wind available and throttle back on hydro to build reserve hydro capacity.
  
  Now I think about it, why doesn’t the government buy max Huntly output and sell to industry? It would be a massive intervention into the electricity market but the “wind first” intervention has skewed the market once wind reached a critical percentage.
  The extra 500MW from Huntly must be cheaper than the same via LPG import.
  
  Another (nuclear option, excuse the pun) is to turn off hot water heating and public EV chargers. Ask for feedback — to get hot showers and EV charging back we need to max out the coal plant. Allow Green party members to opt out of coal power if they want.

This is mentioned in this part of the item:
“Judge Rowe referred to a restorative justice meeting between Nuku, his whānau and the victim, and said she had recognised Nuku’s actions were part of intergenerational trauma.”

Is this yet another in a long line of feeble excuses that are allowed in NZ Courts by judges when offenders are trying to justify committing what is a serious crime?

        Hell, I’d approve if the CIA enabled his overthrow but it seems they can’t or won’t do things like that anymore. Besides their role in things like Pinochet and Mosaddegh in Iran was always overblown, usually by CIA people puffing themselves up to future Presidents – and then proving bloody useless at the task. What’s often missed is that a lot of locals were very much in on the scene for such things to work, like the Mullahs against Mosaddegh, which is not something they keep quiet about from 1979 on.
        
        For all the squealing that both of those events, and others, have caused down the years it doesn’t compare to taking down the Warsaw Pact and USSR, which the entire US military and security apparatus worked towards for decades.
        
        That’s part of the joke here: Owens is picking up on Cold War Lefty conspiracy theories and opposition to the US taking out the likes of Pinochet, and expressing them as Right-Wing takes in the modern era.

And what are the principles of which he speaks? Even the Māori Kingi says there are no principles; there is just the Treaty.

In the US they have had the right to freedom of expression for like forever. In the town I moved into in NZ when first an immigrant in 1994 the women wore check shirts and the men wore check shirts only in more masculine colours. In town there was a person who was obviously male yet dressed and lived their life as a woman and nobody gave a shit. I never even saw kids giving them a hard time and to the best of my knowledge they are still living as a woman without hassle in that rural Nz town. So I ask again what trans rights do these weirdos actually want. Even when the community accommodate an individuals fantasies it’s not enough we have to BELIEVE and suspend rational belief. That’s how you know it’s not about trans peoples rights rather it’s about Marxist post modernist bull shit. Bull shit spelt out rather than abbreviated to bs because bull shit is what it is. It is of course from the local branches of the Teachers (Unions) about the changes to Maths curriculum from next year, and they obviously are not going to try and implement it, as they have their own agendas already, particularly in Rotorua who tell us they are experts, of course, in this.
What is it with these women we hear from all the time, who we would once have held up to be pinnacles of learning for our children, not just Maths
Now it appears they will do every and anything to contradict the Elected Government, via the Education Department.
If they are so good why are the results so abysmal.
I know, they need much more of their time to do what they believe they are expected by the Department to do.
Yes. more Ardern years, and miserable Chippy as Education Minister who must take full responsibility for the education failure from what we hoped would be intelligent Teachers, who only want the best for their children, and not just themselves, who are well paid, and hard done by.
Ask Employers what they get presented for a job interview – am told when they are asked to write their names and addresses then ….bum !
Very sad and disappointing really, but cannot see that the underlying philosophy of Marxism throughout New Zealand will and can be changed.
As I am in the very twilight of my life coming to New Zealand well over 50 years ago for 3 years, and staying because we saw a real futures for our children, who have done very well even so.
Just sad, from what we see and hear, particularly from the so called Media who should be ashamed of themselves, but they are not.

Brian Leyland says: “The blind pursuit of ‘Net Zero’, has driven the closing down of gas exploration and the desire to shut down our coal fired station, even though it is doing a vital job in keeping the lights on.”

He also attacks the electricity market, including on the ground that electricity has insufficient price elasticity, in that when price goes up, demand does not go down.

  I’m a subscriber. The thrust of the article is 1. If you think net zero is dopey then we need more coal and gas generators or 2. If you think net zero is a must for our survival then we need nuclear. You can get the Telegraph quite cheaply <$100 pa, I recommend it. Personally I’d go for gas AND nuclear.     There’s lots of coal extraction going on here . We do use lots of it , much imported from Indonesia .
    We could easily open mine the huge deposits of lignite in the south and be energy independant . Go further and do the coal to petrol thingy too.
    
    Would probably be cheaper than building an LNG port and relying on imports .

    NZ should build a coal to gas plant in southland to supply our $10billion a year oil import needs and help address our calamitous balance of trade.
    
    We use about 160000 barrels per day, and plant would cost something like $15-20 billion. But costs are about the same as current oil prices and we know for absolute sure that it would supply our needs (as opposed to uncertainty of exploration etc).
    
    The payoff is clearly there, with useful side effect of creating substantial heavy engineering technology industrial infrastructure in NZ.

I have been stopped many times, several for driving a car, that was the same make and colour as that involved in crime, many times in breathalyzer stings (never found guilty), I could go on, but you will get the drift. Similar things will have happened to many of us at some time or other. The reality and the perception of reality are usually subject to one’s personal mental model – most would call that personal bias

  cmm: I saw an item on BBC News down at the Nuku’alofa Club yesterday…a couple of poor little buggers absolutely covered in large pustules.
  
  I remember my bout of chickenpox quite well (I had a spot on my dick, which I found quite fascinating!) This version of the pox looks waaay more unpleasant than what I had.

    If liable parents are not named, they cannot be required to pay child support. Obviously.
    
    Previously, if a woman refused to name the father she got her benefit docked.
    
    Smart women now do this.
    
    Refuse to name the father.
    
    Get full benefit.
    
    Do a side deal with the father to pay cash at a rate less than what he would be required to by IRD..Mother is sweet because she avoids abatement of her benefit. Father has incentive to keep paying because if he stops paying the cash, mother can put him in the system for child support.

      A few years ago, I knew one young mother who fell out with the father of their child and refused to name him on the appropriate registration papers to punish him. So child never saw the father who was not obliged to pay a cent in child support either.
      Taxpayers picked up the tab because a silly young woman didn’t like the father’s new girlfriend.
      What might have been best for the child didn’t come into it.

(a) EV vehicles catching fire in last 12 months vs (b) ICE vehicles catching fire in the last 12 months
except for this little gem:
“Sutcliffe said that of the six EV battery fires recorded in New Zealand, one was caused by a lithium-ion battery that ignited inside an ICE car which then spread to an EV.”

So can we assume that there were 6 EV fires and NO ICE-car fires ? I think we can !

  grey, the afternoon ZB dynamic duo were discussing EVs with the usual fans phoning in. Two things can be taken from the callers. First don’t buy a used EV as the mileage can easily be wound back affecting the true age of the battery. Second if you do long trips stick with an ICE or hybrid and avoid distance anxiety.

The aftermath was livestreamed to social media, which Counties Manukau Road Policing Manager Inspector Tony Wakelin condemned during a media stand-up this afternoon.

“I saw some of the footage. It was filmed before emergency services arrived, there was close-ups of people deceased in the van and injured lying on the road. I thought it was horrible, as did a lot of my colleagues. That’s not acceptable,” he said.

“I say to the people that are filming that, ‘How would you feel if that was your family?’

  I watched him talk to the media live on RNZ this afternoon. He took some questions and then remarked at how disgusting those people were who filmed the scene. He was livid
  Shortly afterwards he wrapped up.
  If it was me I’d be struggling to keep it together
  
  Social media seems to bring out the worst in some people or does it bring out the worst people?
  I read the woman who made a mess of the national anthem at an AB’s game in the US had received death threats.

  Ghost, I agree that footage should be kept out of social media. I recall asking a family member who was a para medic ambo guy how he handled mangled bodies when attending crashes. He said he had to put the scenes to the back of his mind or else he couldn’t handle it on a daily basis. Though he did concede dead children were sometimes hard to witness. Black humour among workmates also helped cope.

The mad ideology of “settler colonialism” undoubtedly in minds of the Woke encompasses New Zealand.

A Wall Street Journal article on the ideology is reprinted on the NZ-founded web site, Arts & Letters Daily and thus should be accessible without a pay wall at the link below.

The article, by Adam Kirsch, says the ideological basis for current anti-Israel protests is a broader set of ideas about “settler colonialism.” He describes this as an influential academic concept that understands certain countries as inherently and permanently illegitimate because of the way they were founded.

A sample:

Shawn Cuthand, a Canadian Cree/Mohawk writer, observed in a 2021 article for CBC News that it had become fashionable for “people [to] introduce themselves as ‘settlers.’ Friends I have talked to refer to it as the fancy way of calling themselves white.”

Another example surely relevant to the views of some NZ activists: ” … every inhabitant of a settler colonial society who is not descended from the original indigenous population is, and always will be, a settler, rather than a legitimate inhabitant.”
