There’s a huge hoo-haa ATM over Winstone shuttering its timber plant near Tangiwai due to rising electricity prices. One report I heard talked about $800/ kWh this year vs $100 a kwh last year. Cue much hand wringing by said media.

But, zero analysis as to what has brought on the change. Is it a lack of production from renewables, perhaps? Not enough gas to power the thermals? Or extra demand arising from excessive immigration?

I don’t expect any honest insight from the media, which is why I no longer trust them.

  Well it’s ALL all of the things you said but mostly just a lack of additional base load capacity being added. Labour and Megan Woods knew this was an issue 6years ago and did precisely NOTHING. Now we are stuck with the result of their total inactivity. It will take 10 years to begin reversing the trend. In the meantime businessed, jobs and residential users will suffer.

      The government is still heavily involved, Ian. The Captain’s Call is a very good example of how a government can change an industry dramatically, and there are myriad others. RMA, zoning, water regs, safety, commercial law, international relations, ports, a long list.

      They are. But the majority shareholder in, for example, Meridian Energy or Genesis Energy is still the NZ Government. While it can’t order these companies around, it can certainly seriously influence their investment policy.

      Govt is central to privative companies investment plans as you know full well Ian.
      
      The Labour ministry of Ardern and Hipkins destroyed certainty for the power industry by:
      
      1/ Demanding via various programs, investment in unreliables (Solar and Wind to you) – this comes with high opportunity costs in terms of planning resources, investment funds for initial build and OPEX allocation for ongoing Maintain & Operate
      
      2/ Crucially Ardern, in an ego move completely against advise from the Energy geeks at MBIE, unilaterally ban ongoing Oil and Gas exploration. Kneecapping NZ energy security for decades.
      
      3/ The Labour government stupidly pursued an uneconomic ‘Battery’ concept via pumped hydro storage. Again diversion of resource to an idea that has been widely debunked by power industry experts commenting on this blog and elsewhere.
      
      In summary; Labour 2017 to 2023 was the worse government of my lifetime and squandered a moderate Government fiscal and general NZ economic position with acts of pure spite (water policy) and pure stupidity (Oil & Gas exploration)
      on top of a disastrous COVID policies.
      
      Those COVID policies of lockdown, borrow and spend on non productive projects and then encouraged and underwrote the RBNZ massively expanding NZ’s money supply. Those last two points have driven large inflation spike in NZ – much to the detriment of low earners and those on fixed incomes (e.g. pensioners etc)
      
      The power Industry has tried to get more hydro build – only to be endlessly blocked by the Greens and Labour (think West Coast hydro, think additional central Otago hydro)
      
      So yeah, the Government is a huge stumbling block to private power companies via policy and regulation.

        Every little bit helps …. IIRC the West Coast one was piddly – something like 30MW give or take a bit.
        
        The Waitaki run-of-the river scheme IIRC was always a bit doubtful.

        The gentailers weren’t involved in this IIRC. So it shouldn’t have affected any of their decisions re new capacity. It wasn’t going to produce any net electricity – just change the time of day when it was required.

      The problem with direct Government involvement is the Government bears the final responsibility for load predictions. There were a couple of committees set up to predict load and set a 15 year power plan and they estimated the best they can and arguably a bit on the generous side. Treasury would often make a dissenting opinion that growth would be lower but that view was generally ignored because politicians recognised that power shortages were politically unacceptable (they get a bit on the bum to remind them of this each decade or two). In line with other Rogernomics things the Government decided it was not going to take Sovereign responsibility for over-estimating and wanted the market and shareholders to bear that responsibility.
      Frankly, despite hiccups along the way, the big four Gentailers and Infratil/Manawa(formerly Trustpower) have done an excellent job of predicting and organising works to keep on top of demand just in time. The biggest issue they currently face is the aftermath of Jacinda’s ‘Captain’s Call’) on oil/gas exploration which has sidelined some peaking/emergency gas fired plant. Nevertheless they are plugging away the best they can to bring new generation on line and would be working on ‘storage’ and possible LNG imports although commercial sensitivity would surround that work.

        It’s 25 years since the market was reformed away from Electricorp and the NZED before that. The pluggting away is not doing much. If I have it right there has not been a lot of new capacity added to the network since then …. why would the gentailers bother? They make good money out of what they do and if the country runs out of power it’s not their problem ….

        Yes The now abandoned Waitaha scheme was “Piddly”, it was designed to give a degree of supply security to The Coast should Transpower fail somewhere across the Alps.
        A very real threat as time extends into the rupture of the Alpine fault that will occur eventually.
        The scheme involved a diversion of the stream at a significant Loop and was apparently scuttled because a few white Water aficionados might have one small opportunity denied.
        I am left wondering how many have traversed that bit of the Waitaha since?

      I’ve written about it before, but will repeat it. The cost of a LNG import terminal for NZ is not prohibitively high, particularly if FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) was to be chosen and a private operator was contracted. Countries much poorer that NZ successfully operate such terminals. One can be set up as an operational entity within about 2-3 years.

      Part of the problem with electricity supply is the fact that the National Government sold the generator companies and handed the responsibility to private wealth funds that don’t have the welfare of ordinary New Zealanders as their primary focus. That and the belief that wind generation will produce low-cost power, it will never happen. Ultimately when the crisis becomes super critical whoever is in government can kill the Tiwai aluminium plant and free up many megawatts.

        Private wealth funds don’t dominate the NZ electricity business. Meridian, Contact Energy, and Genesis are all listed on the NZ Stock Exchange.
        
        If you closed the Tiwai aluminium smelter, which provides more than a billion dollars of exports a year for NZ, you would have the problem getting the power to Auckland, on another island, and about 1600km away.
        
        At least 5 per cent of the power would be lost in transmission – after upgrading the lines network for a billion or two dollars.
        
        Then there is the fact that the smelter is an economic buyer – steady take, night and day, through weekends, and there’s only one bill to work out for the power company, compared with billing scores of thousands of homes and offices in Auckland.

  And when Labour is asked by the media for comment, they roll out Megan Woods, who instead of acknowledging poor decision making in the past as a contributing factor, she “gaslights” and deflects by blaming National for investing enough in renewable energy!
  
  (Plus which would only make things worse)!
  
  Where is the MSM critique of Labour’s poor decision making?
  
  And why isn’t Labour being held to account for their “economic arson” they have inflicted on NZ and continue to flaunt?

  Low lake levels (and won’t be much snow melt this spring either by looks of it).
  Cancellation of oil and gas exploration and coal being labelled as the worst energy source of all means no plans for new thermals. What company would invest in coal and destroy their brand?
  Tiwai smelter uncertainty as they let the contract roll over year by year – gens didn’t invest strongly, even if they could because their new plant could end up mothballed if Towai shut down (water has a much lower short run marginal cost). Lake Onslow, similar chilling impact on investment.
  
  What we need – a big ass new clean burning coal station in the North Island. Open up oil and gas exploration and hope for the best (or govt sets up own business). Open up hydro options – tell the iwi and DOC to F.off. Review connection of intermittent generation sources to ensure they are bearing the full cost of connection and operation. That would be a good start.

DoC and all these minority East Polynesian groups need to be given the strong message that while their opinions may be held that the big majority don’t need to beholden to them. Bring on more hydro, more gas, clean burning coal and if suitable, nuclear.

      Not a lot for this time of year in aggregate.
      Snow melt provides 80% of the water to the South Island hydro lakes. That is why prices are so high atm – lakes are low and forward expectations are for low lake levels through summer. Hydro is priced based on the cost of the alternative which at the margin is….presumably a combo of coal, diesel and load shedding/dispatchable demand.

  Yes, most of the time they have been able to purchase electricity at a low spot price and enjoyed the savings. Then they hit a temporary period where the spot price and consider that it is more profitable to temporarily shut down rather than pay a high spot price. This is not a market failure, it is precisely how the market is intended to work. It is called demand side management. It is like the old fashioned rack. The torturer turns the wheel until the prisoner confesses. In a time of electricity shortage, as the spot price increases more and more customers reduce consumption such that available generation continues to meet demand.
  And in general a customer cannot move from spot price to contract when the market is tight. No supplier is interested in negotiating contracts then. And then major customers and small time retailers like Electric Kiwi complain to the Electricity Authority, the Minister and anyone else who will listen that the market is unfair, has failed, is rigged blah blah.

  There must be a bit of concern about lake levels at the mo. Yesterday, not at peak time, I saw the coal generation cranking away near full capacity and even diesel generation running.
  Oddly, they hadn’t turned up the wind and solar generation. It’s almost as though they can’t be relied on in times of shortage. /s.

  For context, the power for the Winstone pulp mill is not just to keep the lights on in the office. The power is used to power enormous grinders that rip logs into little shreds ie pulp. Power is the main cost of production.
  The plant is located in the middle of the North Island hydro schemes, so is analogous to Tiwai point. That is, a very large user of electricity with nearby low-cost generation that is compelled (by government via Transpower) to pay the average transmission cost of all New Zealand. So, many years after the plant was built, Winstone is forced to subsidise the Cook Straight cable and also subsidise the faraway wind generators.
  
  I imagine negotiations will arrive at the Tiwai model, eventually carving out a deal to keep the plant going.

I’ve discovered the missing key to disproportionate statistics of Maori in prisons, crime, poverty, health, child abuse, etcetera.
All people with any proportion of European ancestry will now be classed as European New Zealander, totally emptying the prisons of Maori, and opening the way to targeting actual causes of social malaise, rather than ethnic finger pointing and race based prejudice.

    It should be enough for someone to ‘feel Maori’ and ‘identify as Maori’. Asking someone what Hapu or Iwi they belong to and whether they have Maori DNA is intrusive and feels racist, as if a ‘blood quantum’ is being imposed. There should be a system where I can sign a simple form declaring myself to be Maori, and I can access a general pool of money provided by taxpayers for the purpose of ‘delivering for Maori’. If this does not currently exist then it should be established.

      Interesting. I did this in relation to health care. And the reactions from the providers is noticeable. As soon as they see whatever checkbox in their system says I’m Maori, their behaviour changes. They actually show deference, I’d say exhibit some kind of white guilt and the level of concern sky-rockets. I find it amusing and sad all at once.

    In the 1930’s the percentage of Irish Catholics in New Zealand was roughly the same as the percentage of Maori in New Zealand today. The percentage of the prison population that was Irish Catholic was roughly the same as the percentage that is Maori today. It’s all about class and poverty, not race.

A radical left wing pair on the (D) ticket. A potential POTUS president who is a San Francisco socialist, and a potential VP who is another socialist, but from Minnesota, the California of the Midwest. The only state Reagan didn’t win in his 1984 landslide.

I’m excited, but not for the (D) ticket. The regime media is going to have to work very hard to mask this (D) radicalism. Will they ask her any questions? They sure haven’t to date.

A councillors car was shot at because he doesn’t agree with Maori wards.

Te Purutanga Mauri Pūmanawa Māori Ward councillor Te Waka McLeod said shooting at Chong’s car was not on.

Well that’s something at least.

But then to combat the opposition to Maori wards they say:

“I hope that with the 18 months we’ve got to work on this we can as a community and those that support the Māori ward we can educate those that are either sitting on the fence or are a ‘no’ and kind of give them hope.”

There’s that word again. “Educate”

Don’t try and educate people, Te Waka McLeod, demonstrate to people how your presence improves the lives of ALL the residents that council represents. Show how you prioritize the wellbeing of everybody, not just “your people”.

  OK, I’ll bite.
  
  The Muslim call to prayer is not a problem per se. The problem is in the actual quality of the people flooding in to USA.
  
  I lived in Cape Town for 8 years of my life.We heard the call to prayer speakers booming across the Cape Flats. No problems with that. In Cape Town the Muslims and Christians have lived side by side for well over a century without slitting each other’s throats.
  
  But where the problem comes in is the recent immigrants (zero or first generation) who feel entitled to not fit in but rather take over. The resentment when they fail to assimilate boils over into crime etc.
  
  That is far more of a problem than a few prayers over speakers.

  The elephant in the room is never addressed in these arguments. OT is criticised when kids in care are ‘abused’ but the parents and family never are. This sums up the Maori position:

The Met Commissioner coming out of a “Cobra” meeting was asked by a reporter “what about 2 tier policing” , he then knocked the microphone to the ground . Uh er , had a member of the public done that they could well be on charges .

There’s footage of a Sky ( I think) reporter covering what was meant to be a counter demo . She had to flee the scene while intimidated by a number of men .One was even filmed trying to stab the media vans tyre with a knife .

One would think their media colleagues would play up both these very anti media incidents in solidarity and all that ………but not much at all .

Two Tier Keir and the rest of the media party pushing the harsh law and order narrative against the current crop of rioters , while the thugs who beat up the Manchester airport cops are free to give news conferences .

  There was a lot of coverage of the Rowley incident by Sky’s rivals but the Birmingham intimidation and tyre slashing not so much. Sky even didn’t cover themselves being attacked/targeted the following morning in their wrap up of the previous night’s incidents – all they showed was Plymouth and Belfast (nasty white ray-sist rioters) rather than Birmingham (brave community defenders who inadvertently had picked up knives, machetes and swords).
  TalkTV and GB News focussed heavily on Birmingham but then that is the difference in target audiences.

For all the down tickers I would like you to reflect on the accuracy of my posts. K has picked a white man that actually looks older then he is. I am not sure if he has Gay family members, as I like most know little of the man. I can say he has / had a hearing impairment he got while in the military.

I would say he almost 100% covers the bases that Kamila didn’t. From that perspective a good pick.

  Those iconic higher end department stores have been closing for decades. Christchurch lost ‘Arthur Barnetts’ at least 20 years ago and Dunedin and Wellington lost theirs in the last 10 years. As far as I am aware Smith and Caugheys and Ballantynes are the remaining ‘iconic’ stores.

  The peeps working the cosmetic counters have their wages subsidised by the cosmetic company they are representing, not to mention a whole lot of free product. It could be as much as 60%, plus sales incentives, and overseas trips for the best ones. I imagine that they will be keeping the best sellers so if she is working for one of the top 3 or 4 cosmetics companies, she’ll probably be fine.

A comment on the quality of the TVNZ reporting.

This morning I watched two American political podcasts, both with left and right presenters. In both cases the left presenters were over the moon with the Tim Walz VP selection. They were surprised and happy that a very left leaning progressive Dem had been selected. They went on to cover his policies and they indeed were very ‘progressive’.
I turn on ones breakfast show and they cut to their US reporter. He proceeds to tell us that the Dems have selected a very un controversial centrist politician.

I mentioned the disconnect between the sources to my wife, who replies that the Dailymail reported him as very left leaning too.

Why are TVNZ misleading NZ viewers? Are they just uninformed, if so could there journalist not have done the same research I did? Or are they trying to pump for the Dems. Initially I couldn’t see why they would but I guess there are American voters in NZ and TVNZ certainly don’t like Trump or the right wing of politics.

        Of the many examples, my favourite “progressive” policy of his was bending the knee to the cabal of violent, revolutionary communists from BLM and Antifa who invaded his state and annexed the locked-down Minneapolis, his state’s largest city, in May and June 2020. Said communists were there to protest the so-called racist killing of drug addict, wife beater and career criminal St George Floyd, who overdosed on a cocktail of drugs while lying near a policeman’s knee [Floyd had severe pre-existing heart issues and had overdosed in the same area only months ago. The race angle was never mentioned in the show trial that convicted Derek Chauvin and other officers of murder].
        
        Walz was unwilling to quell the communist insurrection and in fact was perfectly happy for massive nationwide chain stores and locally owned businesses alike to be looted, ransacked and burnt down.
        
        Of course, he endorsed police reform (aka defund the police) and the crime and murder rate spiked. Yet another win for people who vote progressive / socialist to feel good about themselves.

  So, they will rely on gaslighting from the media. Trump’s team has been very policy focused but the media have pretended it’s all about “Kamala isn’t Black” because they know they’ll lose on policy.
  
  They’re pushing “they’re weird” because they know they’ll lose on policy.
  
  The Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) don’t care about democracy, they actively hate it. Democracy dies in darkness as the WoPost likes to say and here they are actively trying to hide the policy arguments (which is the Republican campaign) and make it all about a carefully controlled narrative on Trump’s weaknesses while ignoring Harris’ many, many problems.
  
  Also, Uygur is an absolute antisemite so of course he’s happy they chose a guy with a German name over the Jew. Again, that’s problematic – they’ve bent over to the Hamas loving section of the party which most Americans will have an issue with.

      The “British” were Celts , named after one of the tribes , the Britii or some such.
      The Roman invasion and colonisation was arguably not succesful as they had to do a Joe Biden style retreat ( albeit a cuppla four hundred years down the road) to defend their continental holdings .Did they have a lasting legacy ? Perhaps the Wall which was an erstwhile boundary between England and the Scots , but ever changing.
      
      Later “invasions” were the likes of the Angles , Saxons ,Jutes invited initially by the post Roman “Britons” ( Celts) as mercenaries to fight the now invasive Scots and Irish . The new comers liked what they saw and decided to stay . Created their own chiefdoms , then in turn fought the later invasions of Vikings/Danes .
      
      The “English” ( Anglo Saxon Jutes) were still fighting Norsemen ( Danes/Vikings) when another ‘northman’ descendant William decided he had a claim to England .1066 and all that . It was this character who essentially created the centralised English state ( though the Anglo Saxons were definitely working towrds ( Alfred the Great etc) that we recognise today ……..

        Actually, the Celts arrived in Britain around 5 -400 BC, The native Britons had been there for many generations, after crossing from Europe over the Dogger? land bridge, which disappeared with the end of the last Ice Age with rising sea levels.
        And of course William the Conqueror was a Norman – whose forebears were Vikings, who settles in Normandy with the blessing of the then French king.

        I guess this entire conversation speaks to the fact that groups of humans are by their nature colonisers. If you are on an island and controlling significant resources then for thousands of years another group would come via sea going vessels and try to take it from you. If you happen to be of the same skin colour as the colonisers then total assimilation will eventually occur.   I was in that emporium a couple of weeks ago and asked directions at the cosmetics counter to the ladies dunnies on behalf of my wife.
  I said I was sorry to hear the writing was on the wall.
  She told me a rescue package was in the wind along the lines of what’s been announced
  After that I went to a world press photography exhibition a couple of floors up that looked like the result of earlier retrenchment. Maybe there was a tea rooms up there once where all the well to do Auckland ladies could gather for lunch.
  So now they’re shortly going to be down to one floor.
  Must have figured out it’s less of a loss while times are tough than paying out some pretty big redundancies

    The 6th floor of the company’s building (corner of Elliott and Wellesley Streets completed 1929) was leased to the Lyceum Club from 1929 to 1994. The Club was the premier ladies club in Auckland (the Northern Club was gents only) and Smith and Caughey’s astutely gained the Club as a tenant since the most expedient way of accessing the Club was through the store to get to the lifts. The Club moved out as its membership declined and it could not attract new members. The firm then chose to retain the 6th floor for company purposes such as hosting exhibitions and for the Enchanted Cave and Santa prior to Christmas (and as noted in the media this will run as usual this coming Christmas).

Had problems loging into Kiwiblog. Can’t find anything that would have given me a holiday. Could not even go to anything Kiwiblog. Password reset and I get a link that is still rejected. Reset the Modem/Router, still nothing. Away from home and I switch on data on my cellphone, and Kiwiblog works, but I can’t login.
Anyway here at about 10.30am everything is back to normal with a changed password.
Thanks to anyone who sorted things for me.

Like all Thai boxers Janjaem comes from out in the stix and started off in Muay Thai
There were some Thais in the crowd, but you can be sure they won’t be her family who would be in front of the biggest TV know to man back in the village at four in the morning

It is a little hard to unravel the reasoning. However, I think it says that there is no crisis in maths achievement in New Zealand schools. Any problems were caused by some standards introduced by a National Minister 15 years ago. And poverty. And the Government is mean for attacking “dedicated” teachers.

That is enough of “The Standard” for another two years. I hesitate to call commentators on public policy insane. But sadly this does come across as literally insane.

Does anyone else find it bizarre that the Smith and Caughey store in Queen st will stay open while the Newmarket one will close (I would have thought Newmarket would have more success or less chance of bumping into deros). Or Is it like Stuff buying Newshub, they know it’s a dog and needs to be put out of its misery but just feel like it can last another year for feelz.
