    Well we could by introducing a new way of accounting for things which better reflects reality.
    
    All the woke politicians are like Luxon. They don’t want to address the problem or do anything at all controversial. They just hope they can kick the can down the road so it doesn’t explode on their watch.
    
    THat’s why we get all these massive commitments for 2030 or 2050 or whatever. It is so easy to make commitments that you don’t have to deliver on. In the mean time you can take the credit for being “visionary” etc.

        If the government did so, New Zealand’s greenhouse inventory would be rejected by the UNFCCC. New Zealand would be ejected from the Paris Accord, the only country in the world to be outside the Accord.
        
        So you are not being realistic. That is never going to happen. New Zealand is not going to make up its own methodology to calculate the emissions inventory submitted for the Paris Accord.

      That’s not true, there is rye grasses now that reduce emissions by 33%, there are also microbes that do the job as well, but they are GM, do you not remember them saying these tools will be given to farmers to do their bit, we have to pass laws to change GM editing.

    Do we really have net agricultural emissions?
    All that grass, all that bush in unproductive gulleys, all those shelter belts, all those fields of maize, do they not gobble up that horrible CO2 which is greening deserts and increasing crop yields?
    According to a chart I saw on some government publication agriculture emits 50% of our greenhouse gases. I say bullshit to that.
    I’m tired of hearing from the Greens and their useful idiots that farmers are polluters.
    Do these idiots whining about global boiling not understand that farmers feed us?
    And our farmers feed millions overseas as well. By growing grass and feed crops which suck far more greenhouse gases than or cows could ever burp.
    I’d love to see Chloe or Menendez March stand in front of a room full of farmers and tell them that they are naughty polluters and they have to do better. It’ll never happen.

        Not to mention the 8 million hectares of bush under DOC control. How much CO2 does that gobble up every day? Is that considered when our emissions are calculated? What about the CO2 absorbed by the sea in our economic zone?
        Our emissions are probably negative if these were to be taken into account along with the thousands of hectares in urban gardens, lawns, parks, playing fields and golf courses.
        Is that the REAL inconvenient truth, we’re being punished for emissions that don’t happen?

  Yet this is exactly what politicians want us to do. What was it that Simon Upton said in that speech the other day? – “Change is costly”, and “Degrowth won’t be an easy sell”.
  No shit, Sherlock.
  Note that as it stands we’ve spent trillions of dollars doing this energy transition thing, managed to drop FF use percentage by just one or two points, and this will have been getting rid of the low-hanging fruit. Imagine how much it will cost when we start getting to the tough part.
  Q: How much have these trillions of dollars changed the climate so far?

      Not any more they don’t, and fencing waterways was not a Fontera project, it was the previous Nat government that interceded it, and PGGW had a lot of input, farmers were happy to get on board, and it was not compulsory

Say to them the Zero Carbon Act will mean your income will drop and you will have to stop taking plane flights or driving your petrol driven car and electricity will be more expensive. Do you support that Act. What do you think the Yes vote would be? North of 5%.

  There are votes in promising action on climate change. There are not votes in actually imposing the costs and restrictions need to make it happen. But that doesn’t matter if you set goals far enough in the future that some other government will be in power when the deadline arrives.

  Sorry mate. I’m in my 59s, happily married with no kids and I have ZERO regrets. I have several friends who feel exactly the same. I don’t hate kids, I have nieces and nephews and even a grandchild. I’m not obsessed with a career or anything like that, i don’t spend my life in cafes and restaurants, I just never had any hankering to reproduce. Just as many men do not.
  
  We are all on a spectrum with this as with everything. Some men are hugely maternal and some women are not. Doesn’t make any of us bad people. Don’t be so judgmental.

    This case is about a non-citizen hiding $20m through 400,000 non-consenting donors.

I’ve never previously paid any attention to Kamala Harris; but having become the likely Democrat Presidential nominee, her photo is all over the place.

I note that she is described as part Indian and part Afro Caribbean; but I have to say that she is barely black. You’d have to think there is some Caucasian in there also, though trumpeting that would be off-message. Compared to, say, Michelle Obama, Kamala looks like she just has over applied the bronzer or has a bit of a tan.

If I was a US citizen descended from slaves, I think I’d be disappointed that Kamala is the flag bearer for black Americans.

Harris was Brown’s public social partner so you have to ask what was in it for him (politically). Harris gave Brown access to the uber wealthy cool Silicon Valley donor class.   Harris only became “black” when running for president in 2020.
  
  Hariss was raised by her Indian mother in an Indian American culture. Her father had Irish/Jamaican/African ancestry and came from slave owning money.
  Both parents were well paid Berkley professors and Harris never experienced any deprivation in her life.

      The salient point about the affair was that Harris has never actually been elected in a contested election.
      Brown appointed her as the democrat AG and Senator. In Democrat California there has not been a Republican statewide official elected for 25 years, so Brown’s nod was all that was needed. (We have just seen how the Democrat elites ignore internal democracy. )

    For some reason I haven’t yet figured out, I couldn’t be less interested. NZ will probably win a few medals in sports that are not played much anywhere else, but my belief is that by tacking on “sports” like artistic swimming it is becoming a nonsense.
    
    I don’t believe that the Olympics should include ANY team sports, nor any sport that is decided by judges. The original concept was higher, further, faster or something like that, so anything like a panel of partisan judges deciding on a performance like diving or artistic swimming should be confined to their own world champs.
    
    Team sports have their own world champs and these have much higher significance than something staged for the sake of it.
    
    Quite honestly, I have no desire to watch all that much that is happening in Paris.

      World Athletics are, predictably, not best pleased and there are mutterings that they should secede from the Olympic movement and hold annual or biannual World Championships of their own.

  There was no technical reason for walking around with a range finder. You’d only do this if you wanted to be noticed.
  
  A 223 has a maximum point blank range of 250 yards (around 220 metres). That is the range for which there is no need to compensate for bullet drop and the impact point will be within 3 inches.
  
  Any ranging can also be easily done off Google Maps etc.
  
  The only valid reason to walk around with a range finder is if you want to be noticed.

    The problem with that line of thinking is that is you considering how you would have done it now, not HIM considering it THEN.
    Every event has its own particular situation, and everybody has their own particular psychology.
    We are sitting here cool calm and collected trying to think through all the particular details of killing Trump, but we all (hopefully) lack one crucial element necessary to kill Trump, which is a strong desire to kill Trump even at the risk of our own lives.
    This rather reminds me of a famous quote by Valerie Solanas, the woman who shot Andy Warhol,
    ” I consider that a moral act. And I consider it immoral that I missed. I should have done target practice.”
    At a distance of a couple of yards she fired twice and missed, then hit him in the abdomen skewering his liver and spleen, then hit another man, the art critic Mario Amaya in the hip and then her gun (.32 beretta) jammed.
    These events, wanting to shoot Andy Warhol and not being able to shoot Andy Warhol very well, run together, they aren’t independent.
    She wanted to kill him because she was a paranoid schizophrenic, and she didn’t do any target practice and learn to run her pistol well because she was a paranoid schizophrenic.
    Cool calm and collected it would have been one shot straight between the eyes, but cool calm and collected wouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place.
    That’s the problem with trying to work out the actions of the mentally ill, you just can’t predict which way they are going to break.

The Royal Commission into abuse.
I have just read Rob MacCulloch’s article on the extent to which the abuse totals are unable to be confirmed.
Why is it that this is always the result of such enquiries?
The first reason we know is because the terms of reference, as Rob states, determine the type of answer produced.
Why is the media behaving as if the information produced by the Commission is something that we haven’t heard before?
The Herald articles on the loss of their land by Maori will be in the same vein.
I grew up learning about the skill the Maori showed during the Maori Wars, a reasoned summation of the fairness/unfairness of their loss of land and no mention of the Treaty having principles.
We understood that they weren’t always treated fairly but wasn’t that what the Waitangi Tribunal was set up to make recommendations about?

The Companies Register shows the company the woman blames, Voda Ltd, is owned by Shu Hui and Yao Liu, who live in different flats in Auckland.

  The threat profile for Singapore is completely different to NZ which means our defence structures can, and should, be completely different.
  
  Singapore has land based adversaries who can roll over their border. For that you need a solid land-based army with air support etc. Similarly they have a lot of close threats over the water where a coastal navy helps.
  
  On top of that, Singapore is in an extremely strategic location, completely changing the motivation of adversaries.
  
  We’re a tiny island, miles from anywhere, of little or no strategic value. We certainly don’t need to worry about invading armies rolling over our borders.
  
  Certainly we should arm ourselves and come up with a good defensive policy, but we need to make sure we’re solving the right problems.

    No, that way any significant military action we wish to undertake will have to be approved by Canberra which in turn will have to be approved by Washington. But anything that Washington and Canberra want to do will be done whether or not Wellington supports it.
    This reminds me of a conversation I had some years ago with a Scotsman who was in favor of Scottish independence. One thing that annoyed him very much was the Gulf war of 2003. Scotsmen were fighting and dying in Iraq in order to maintain London’s special relationship with Washington, Edinburgh had no say in the matter.
    If NZ wants an independent foreign policy, it must have a military that can operate independently.

    Plenty of useful stuff could be manufactured locally or assembled from dual use components.
    One major myth that has to die is that useful military kit is expensive difficult to make and that we have to pay the outrageous prices that the Western military industrial complex demands.
    Look at what insurgent forces like ISIS, the Taliban, the Vietcong or the IRA achieved without an industrial base or a formal state.
    It is perfectly possible to make a cruise missile that can carry 100s of kgs of payload 100s of km with a few thousand dollars of materials and instructions from the internet. Hamas makes Katyusha rockets out of plumbing supplies, sugar and salt!
    The only thing that NZ really lacks is the political will power.

These home invasions etc are getting out of hand.

IMHO if anyone comes into your house uninvited threatening theft or violence they have given up any rights to life etc.

If they end up being pepper sprayed, shot with a crossbow or with a belly full of buckshot that’s all fine. They should have considered that before offending.

NZ is not the quaint country of the 1970s when a cop could command respect by pulling out his notebook. It is increasingly becoming a threatening place with home invasions etc.

Times have changed. The self protection options available to decent people need to change too.

In the case of the United Kingdom (England), the best documented The Five Eyes Alliance (FVEY) deployment of military PsyWar capabilities against domestic civilians and residents during the COVID crisis has involved the British Army’s seventy seventh brigade, a disinformation unit responsible for information warfare and psychological operations.

The formation and mission scope of the seventy seventh brigade is detailed in a November 2018 article in Wired magazine titled “Inside the British Army’s secret information warfare machine”. Journalist Carl Miller described seventy-seventh brigade warfighters as knowing “how to set up cameras, record sound, edit videos. Plucked from across the military, they were proficient in graphic design, social media advertising, and data analytics. Some may have taken the army’s course in Defence Media Operations, and almost half were reservists from civvy street, with full time jobs in marketing or consumer research.”

According to the slides, JTRIG was in the business of discrediting companies, by passing “confidential information to the press through blogs etc.”, and by posting negative information on internet forums. They could change someone’s social media photos (“can take ‘paranoia’ to a whole new level”, a slide read.) They could use masquerade-type techniques – that is: placing “secret” information on a compromised computer. They could bombard someone’s phone with text messages or calls.

The “Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group” (JTRIG) also boasted an arsenal of 200 info-weapons, ranging from in-development to fully operational. A tool dubbed “Badger” allowed the mass delivery of email. Another, called “Burlesque”, spoofed SMS messages. “Clean Sweep” would impersonate Facebook wall posts for individuals or entire countries. “Gateway” gave the ability to “artificially increase traffic to a website”. “Underpass” was a way to change the outcome of online polls.

Having a 30 years of experience in the technical side of the Internet I understand how this is all possible (and has been possible for some time), so not unexpected that those that wish to, or are paid to, are able to effect all these operations on our “trusted” media channels.

The only antidote is to “believe nothing” you read or are told, well not until you have looked for the alternatives, and found supporting evidence (not just echos – eg. reading it on both CNN & the Huff Post).

The challenge is how to educate the citizenry of such an approach to life on this planet!

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has encouraged anyone with knowledge of an alleged paedophile ring of politicians in the 1980s to “come forward”.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care, in its final report published on Wednesday, detailed a “separate and confidential” investigation it launched after receiving allegations about a paedophile ring of central government politicians and senior public servants operating in the 1980s.

While the evidence it received was “deeply suspicious”, ultimately the inquiry was unable to substantiate the claims and “make a finding that organised abuse of children and young people in state care occurred by groups of people in public positions of influence”.

Here’s a thought.

Before worrying about paedophiles from the 1980s that you can’t do anything about – how about expending that effort to rather flush out any perverts that exist now.

Sure, people were hurt by events 40 years ago (and 140 years ago too no doubt). But those can’t be changed. It is far more important to address today’s problems today.

Unless maybe Luxon, like Cindy, thinks it is better to leave today’s problems for investigations in the 2060s.

    When Howard Broad was commissioner, there were 2 deputy commissioners, and about 6 assistant commissioners.
    
    It was Mike Bush that expanded the numbers of those a lot, and Andrew Coster a bit further.
    
    Now there are 6 or 7 deputy commissioners, and at least 12 assistant commissioners. Plus their staff.
    
    If i were in a position of influence I’d be telling 12-15 of those aforementioned to get back out into the districts and start solving some crime.

    I access the internet every day. The fact that I prefer commentators that others here don’t, and happily make that very clear to anyone who accesses Kiwiblog, is what is called free speech (that is fully approved of here by DPF).

For those who may be interested I lodged a Local Government OIA with the Dunedin CC following the grandiose Matariki celebration (night time drone show at the indoor stadium) in that city. It appeared to me to be a very expensive production and was reported on TV1 as a highly successful “free” event. Checking the Dunedin CC website I found that it was delivered by them in concert with local Iwi and the NZ International Science Festival. Long story short the DCC replied that the direct costs to them were only $35,000 because essentially the whole thing was bank rolled by central government (MBIE). Next step is to find out how it cost MBIE and how much was spent on Iwi involvement etc. But for now I suppose it shows that far from being a jolly new public holiday where everyone’s a winner it is also a very expensive exercise for the taxpayer. I’d be shocked if the cost didn’t run into the hundreds of thousands if not seven figures, and that’s just in Dunedin.
