  In 1943, when they realised what he had lead them into, the Italians overthrew Mussolini and hung him and his mistress upside down at a Milan gas station. Like those fans of Hamas, the Germans stayed loyal subjects of Adolf until the bitter end – when their country was in ruins.
  
  When I see those casualty figures in Gaza reported solemnly on BBC news, I don’t believe a word of them. But they might be true – who knows?
  
  Returning again to WW II, the number of people killed in the Dresden raid is now thought to be about 25,000. At the time, Goebbels decided that figure wasn’t shocking enough, so he simply added a zero…and the figure of 250,000 killed was accepted for many years.
  
  No=one is ever going to know how many civilians in Gaza have been killed in the current war.

Her item kicks off with this” The New Zealand Film Commission’s flop productions – fiscal 21/22 and fiscal 22/23 – have left Kiwi audiences without a single character to cheer for. The cast – notably the political appointees of the agency’s board – lurch from bumbling to backpedalling, as they spend the public’s money in a scramble for self-preservation.

Only spending OPM though. Clearly self-preservation is key. Clear thinking and value for taxpayer funding, not so much.

  Really puzzling about the Hastings Council……. here we have the CBD of Hastings dying before our eyes, shops closing all up and down Heretaunga St. They are considering a new paid parking system which I understand is virtually automatic. And still needs a vehicle to drive up and down to check what’s parked there. Don’t fully understand the system but sounds horrendously expensive.

    Must give BNZ some praise. When I could not work because of a bad injury, ACC cut paying me. I explained it to BNZ and they gave ne a mortgage holiday for many months. Interest accumulated but I did not lose my house.
    I fought ACC with some dam good Lawyers and won.

  And where each Indian worker, to comply with our Privacy laws, must abide by NZ Privacy laws and in any/every single instance, must ignore their own country laws and that of the USA, if those laws contravene NZ privacy laws.
  
  I’ve dealt with heaps of Indian / Philippine tech call centres, and most if not all do not know what is in the NZ Privacy laws, which in itself, are very ambiguous.
  
  When you hear a dog barking or a canary singing in the background, you know the optimum privacy and security levels don’t exist.
  
  Cost / Cost effectiveness is only considered AFTER all other important factors are met. Security and Privacy ARE important factors.

This story has major gaps.

Ngati Whatua Orakei’s land was nearly wiped out.

But “Today the tribe is an economic powerhouse, with $1.6 billion of assets in 2022..” Great news. “and not because of crown handouts”…so how did they do it?

“In 1978, we had to purchase the houses on Kitemoana St after the Bastion Point occupation. (how much were the houses, what money did they use? There had been no settlements yet?)
In 1991, we got a $3m settlement and then in 1996 we purchased [the railway land] in Auckland city for $44m. (where did they get the money to purchase the $4m railway land when they only had a $3m settlement.?)

When we look at our balance sheet today, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is coming up to $2b of assets that we have managed to accumulate – and not because of any Crown handouts. We received the $3m in 1991 and $18m in 2012 – that’s not a lot in this context and we have managed to build our asset base.
(How? How did they build the asset base from $21m to $1.6bill without help from the crown?)

We have effectively funded our own Treaty settlement.” Seems the crown and pakeha are to blame for all the loss and sale of the land , but no credit or acknowledgement of good will for any of the settlements or modern co-governance arrangements or uptick in good fortune.

And what happened to the 13 individuals that were also mentioned in the article who were trustees of the Tribal Trust who they distributed the remaining 700 acres of Orakei land to. “he Crown came in and recognised those 13 trustees as individual owners and divided up their interests among themselves and their children and grandchildren.”

So the wealth to the tribe is more than just $1.6 billion. It’s also the land value of the 700 acres which was distributed to 13 Tribal leaders and their families which the article also blames on the crown and courts. Would be good to see how those 13 tribal families are doing and whether they were able to grow and provide for their family long term.

What about both NIWA and Hawkes Bay Regional Council ignoring historical storm data which causes them to underestimate possible flood levels and the danger posed to lives and property.

  Ironically, NIWA has any interesting severe weather event data base that goes back to the late 19th century. From about the 1920s they are well documented. A number of those weather events were highly destructive. Well before climate change became an issue.

        When I was a young boy, we had a large earthquake in Dunedin, early 70s I remember my grandmother who was born in 1905, she told me it’s not a big earthquake until the steeple falls of the chch cathedral, no one else no even my father remembers her saying this, on doing some investigating, the steeple feel down 3 times in the late 19 th century, and something like 1910 and 30 or something like that, it was quite amusing when the top of the cathedral fell down they said it was the 7 th time it had fallen because of earthquakes.

      Prior to 1878 there’s a sea and river port at Port Molyneaux at the mouth of the Clutha River. Late in 1878 a big flood came and shifted the outlet(s) of the Clutha to the north. Other than the name there’s not much left of Port Molyneaux today.

  Clear the shingle deposits from the lower reaches and deepen the channels. Then ensure river mouths are open to the sea to ensure maximum outflows at all times. The outflow at Waitangi bridges being a priority as well as Wairoa of course. BTW I have a basic understanding of the affect of tides on outflows.
  
  I am no engineer but the above makes more sense than widening rivers and having stop banks that will probably collapse in the next big flood.
  
  Shingle can be sold as base for new roading that is getting underway throughout the North Island to defray or at least reduce cost to ratepayers.
  
  Any engineers here like to help HBRC out with a bit of advice,

  EDIT.. I knew a guy who did not like the noise of the fan in the range hood of his stove. He had an engineer design a system where the motor for the fan was up on top of the roof outside the house. Just so he could cook his pork buns in silence 🤫. IIRC it cost about 15k.

    Many people have instant pointer things, but those cost maybe $500 or so.

    I have a silent range hood, (new build 2 years ago), with variable fan on outside of house. $1500 from memory.
    
    Cheap home lithium batteries + PV will probably make point-of-use hot water preferred for new builds in a few years. No problem delivering 10kW to each tap heater costing a few $100 and eliminates hot water cylinder + additional pipes for reticulation.

        You can buy home lithium (LiPo) batteries (acronym to look for is BESS) ex china for about $200/kW, and that will continue to drop as battery manufacturing costs are now down to $50/kWh and they will get further commodified with lower and lower margins.
        
        Even 10kWh of batteries can deliver 10kW of power easily.

      yeah pretty basic stuff. Put an inline fan at least 3 meters away from the filters connected with acoustic flex. Ideally locate fan above laundry and put extra gib on ceiling under fan to stop hi freq noise coming thru ceiling. An inline fan will also move twice the air of a prop fan against the static pressure of the flex.

Council would not let us install the extractor externally so we had to build it into the roof cavity in a special soundproof box. The device was quiet, but the sound the air made going up into the ceiling was loud and you could risk losing a small kid if you chucked them up into that sucker.

  We installed one these in our last house renovation in 2009. Ours was from Billi and cost about $6000 IIRC.
  
  The whole family loves it! But then we all seem to drink a lot of chilled water, plus the hot is great: no more waiting for the kettle to boil.
  
  And when it finally crapped out in 2022 I found a replacement on TradeMe for $3000 that was still under warranty. Sold by a plumber who I guessed had removed it from some person’s home as they renovated their kitchen again and didn’t care about getting any money for it. When I picked it up he grinned and said that was exactly what had happened.

My problems with the previous governments agenda were the massive spending and borrowing, the ongoing maorification, and the capitulation to climate extremism and patently ridiculous emissions targets.     If it’s such a great deal then surely the commuters would be prepared to pay for it.
    
    According to some stats I see, there are 12.8 million train trips in Wellington per year.
    
    If the $800M was to be paid off over 20 years then that would only add $4 to every ticket. That’s less than a cup of coffee. Sounds like a bargain if you’re a train junkie.
    
    But no, I suppose you feel entitled to have that $4 per trip paid by the fools that (probably) pay your salary too.

Bloody pathetic useless piece of shit judge

A Timaru teenager who admitted “depraved” and repeated sexual assaults on a young girl – the most “unusual” the sentencing judge has encountered in more than 20 years on the bench – has avoided prison.

Blake Ivan Miller, 19, pleaded guilty to “extremely serious” charges and was facing seven years behind bars.

But 75% of the sentence was cut due to his personal circumstances meaning he will serve just 10 months’ home detention.

And his name will not be added to the national sex offender register.

Since June 2024:

FIRST: Biden has won the primary and he was officially all but unopposed and RFK Jr does not exist.

THEN: Biden is as sharp as a tack and any suggestions to the contrary is conspiracy theory and donors must continue to fund his 2024 election campaign.

THEN: Neither Biden nor Harris is polling well and his presidency is unpopular and Biden must go for the good of democracy and we always knew he was in mental decline and you donors must not continue to fund his campaign

THEN: We have installed Harris and disappeared Biden, and Biden is the greatest patriot and donors must fund her 2024 election campaign and she is polling ahead of Trump and she is incredibly popular even though we told you in 2019 that she was not popular and has not been since now and all Biden’s many successes are due to Harris.

Whoosh! How fast does this party and apparatus change the narrative?
