Darlene Tana contested Tāmaki Makaurau in the 2023 election. While third place in her electorate, Tana was elected as a list member for the Greens based on the party vote.

Tana was in Parliament as a List MP. Her “election” is to reflect the Party Votes result of the Election.

The Green Party caucus reviewed and discussed the report from the independent investigation, which was received on July 5.
The following day, Tana “spoke to the caucus and was given the opportunity to answer questions from MPs. She then left the meeting to allow her colleagues to consider the report’s findings.”
Prior to that decision being made, Tana had written to the party secretary and the party’s parliamentary chief of staff, resigning from the party.

She resigned from the Green Party. The Green’s were deprived of the opportunity to fire her.

Tell us, if Winston in Parliament made mention of Darlene Tana as a Member of the Green Party, would he be ruled against (or whatever the correct term is) for lying, mis-representing the truth, or misleading Parliament – and if so, as point of order he claimed that, as seems to be the case with the Speaker, he has not received written notification from Tana or a Green co-leader of any change since the Election result, where would that leave things –
if readers, and Winston in particular, get the drift.

Asked what she wanted to achieve now as an independent MP, Tana said: “I came in to work on ocean protection and restoring inner-coast marine environments.
“Those are the areas in particular that I’d love to focus on and working across Parliament to achieve some movement in those areas.”

Darleen Tana was Parliamentary representative for 22,058 Party Voters
Now she is representative for 1 Green Party voter, and that voter – by her own action, before any by the Party – has resigned from the Green Party.

  I don’t agree with most of this.
  
  Regardless of who voted for her former party, she was elected to represent the interests of all the people of New Zealand, and can continue to do that.
  
  People who party voted Green may have done that based on general support for the Green party, or based on support for the people specifically on the Green party list. There is no way to know whether replacing Tana is what those voters want.

    People “elected” a party.
    If a voter is not a member of that party, the voter has no influence over who is elected.
    That is in the hands of the people running the party.

      Yep. I’m pretty sure that Green voters did not run their eye down the List & think – I must vote Green so that number 22 (or whatever) D. Tana gets into Parliament.
      
      In fact, the Party chooses the List (one of the bigger failings of our form of proportional representation, in my view). Therefore, one Green List numpty is as good as any other Green List numpty.
      
      It’s the proportion of MPs by Party that reflect the will of the voters on election day. By resigning from the Greens Darleen no longer represents her share of the will of the voters. She must leave Parliament forthwith. By refusing to invoke the waka jumping legislation, Chloe & Marama are effectively denying their supporters what they voted for – in effect, telling them that their votes don’t matter.

    I disagree. Darleen arrived in Parliament courtesy of the Green Party vote. If my party vote had been Green I’d be itching to see her out and the next person on the list in her place.
    
    The only way your argument makes sense to me is if by casting their party votes people are consciously casting an indirect vote for the individuals on that list. This is at least partly true. In deciding who our party vote will go to many of us are considering the calibre of the list candidates as well as the party’s policies and ethos. But at this point I’d be feeling as betrayed by Darleen as the Green Party caucus, and keen to see her gone.
    
    By staying on, exactly who is Darleen representing, other than herself?

      Some of us vote for the party and some vote for the individual people. It quite often happens that an electorate is won by a candidate whose party does not get the most party votes. We may guess why people voted the way they did, but that guess is not a good enough justification for kicking someone out of Parliament.

        We’re talking a list MP here. This is very different to an electorate MP. An electorate MP has some mandate or justification to stay on, but a list MP should be gone by lunchtime.

    As far as I am aware, except for per potentially criminal offending Tana is has done absolutely nothing. All she’s been there for is to put her hand up when a vote is done.

      At the very least resigning from a party list should mean exactly that — no further involvement or taxpayer remuneration.

  I have a lot of friends in wellington all of whom are utterly oblivious as to the actions of the council – except one mention of anger over a cycleway removing on-street car parks – where most people park as they don’t have off road parking – in one area.

  Intelligent people would have determined that a focus on non-core issues and a willingness to use ratepayers as an ATM would have resulted in these types of rates rises.
  
  The sad – and IMO undeniable – outcome is that the rates increase will not address one iota of the infrastructure issues Wellington is facing. It will just go to cost escalation of current vanity projects.
  
  In ten years we will have a future WCC justifying increases of a similar magnitude on the basis of infrastructure failure.

Who will ask Luxon about it and will he even have a clue?

Thorndon Quay is already a dog’s breakfast: new Council plans will destroy it. Parking has already been removed for those wretched cycleways. Disembarking bus passengers will have to dodge for their lives – fortunately, they will be few as Thorndon Quay will never be the pedestrian & entertainment district Mecca that the Council seems to envisage. Despite “being in the shadow of the Stadium”, there is no easy access between the two as the railway lines are in between & there’s no over bridge.

Council keeps spending while local retailers go broke because, apart from the odd coffee, cyclists don’t shop for beds and other home furnishings that predominate in the stores located there.

Thorndon Quay was once the main route in & out of Wellington. When (not if) the next Big One hits, Aotea Quay (on reclaimed land) and the Urban Motorway (with overpasses) may well be knocked out. In which case evacuees will need to negotiate half a dozen raised crossings in addition to every other piece of rubble in the way.

And, in case anyone missed it, Wellington’s recent rates rise is circa 20%.

It’s another appalling decision, in so many ways.

      That would be the next local elections. The same useless candidates will be there so you need some center right candidates, not Greens and Labour.
      Face it, Wellington is seething with socialists who just want ratepayer money.
      Why stop at 20% increase? Make it 50% because the ratepayers will still have to pay or move out. My brother in the Tawa/Porirua are has had a gutsful and is thinking about dropping the lot.

        The local elections seem barely worth the effort. Down here in Christchurch we voted in Phil Mauger (Mauger Disappointment as many locals now call him) by a useful margin. However neither he, nor the council, seem to have the power or the will to rein in the out-of-control bureaucracy and its spending. Nothing changes from term-to-term. The stupidity and profligacy continue, and the rates continue to rise astronomically. The council sticks one finger up right in the ratepayer’s face, and the other hand deep into his pocket.

  There is an access between Thornton Quay and the stadium, albeit fight down by the station. It’s an 800m walk.
  Back when the stadium was in the design stage a footbridge access was proposed around Davis St, but was canned due to objections from residents in the area who didn’t want crowds milling around down there.
  I was told that a few years later they weighed up the odds & lobbied for a footbridge, but that horse had bolted

  Helen Clark of course outlawed smacking but had no personal experience of raising children. I think the context is that should a leader male or female without children bring in policy that has an impact on parents trying to raise children. Hosking criticises Luxon for being too slow to remedy Health NZ overspending. ,”you knew last October, here we are in July and finally you’re doing something”. My criticism too – National was sworn in in December and promptly took a month’s holiday. A real reforming government eg Whitlam, Hawke, Keating, would have told the mandarins “Cancel your Christmas”.

  It would have been extremely disruptive if Chris had cancelled the usual break period at the last minute. It would have badly screwed up holiday plans for all those who work there and their families. It would have affected senior departmental staff. Far better for everyone to have the usual break then get down to business. Also one can rest assured that the newly minted Ministers would have had lots of ‘light reading’ while on holiday.
  As far as Health is concerned, Chris and shane could not just wade into NZ Health with a stockwhip and demand instant changes. Those at the ‘coal face’ would have got badly hurt while the drones were running around protecting their bums. NZ Health was set up to meet political objectives rather than to try to deliver more services and those who benefited will fight tooth and nail to hold their places even if it inflicts collateral damage. Far better to see what is going inside the beast before taking decisive action. The malignant sections can then be excised out with minimal effect on all the wonderful doctors, nurses, other professionals, cooks, cleaners and tradies who deliver real health.

  One difference is it’s now the new government’s budget which started in July, they have the same problem in Tupenga, and the housing out fit, there are 4 places needing fixed, health has moved after the health reforms paper, now they are acting

        There was a show that did a hypothetical match up between various groups and animals that had not directly fought each other.
        
        One show they did a hypothetical match up of Seals (may have been Green Berets, it was more than 10 years ago) and Spetsnaz. At the start of the show the Americans were full of bravado and machismo, then they saw what the ex Spetsnaz guys were demonstrating and very quickly quietened down.     I would suggest a game of football between Spain and England wouldn’t raise any interest in NZ outside of that competition that wrapped up the other day.
    The Olympics are a chance for minority sports players to have their day in the sun.
    Some of the greats of NZ sport would be barely known without the Olympics
    Peter Snell, Murray Halberg, Lisa Carrington, Valerie Adams won 56 elite level shot put competitions consecutively, but it’s her two Olympic gold medals everyone remembers

They are not recent Muslim refugees but people who moved to France from Algeria and Morocco while they were still effectively part of France.   They existed in a freedom camping area near Westport on the northern side of the Buller river mouth now somewhat eroded by big seas from the Tasman, in numbers.
  Dare not leave a camper door open, they would head inside looking for food, very cheeky.
  Never tasted the meat looks nearly as appetising as Mutton Birds haven’t gone there either.

    $450 a day would suggest she’s working 355 days a year. A more reasonable work year would be 45 weeks x 5 = 225 days (ie. $700 per day), but I doubt she’s even making 100 work days (ie. $1600 pd).

      What makes you so sure it’s the unions? I think you’re overestimating their influence in this country. When karakia have been said in meetings in my workplace, it’s been driven by the usual guilty white eagerness to appease Maori activists. The local union (TEU) is insufferably woke (I resigned last year), but I haven’t heard them pushing for karakia.

What did happen was that someone posted on 4chan claiming they were the secret service shooter and was told to not take the shot. Is that because during the peak school travel periods traffic flow is reduced to a crawl?
So are the rules for speeds near the majority of schools solving a problem that largely exists in the minds of parents and teachers (the result of sensationalised reporting)?

So Dr Levy is going to strip $1.4bn/year of wasteful spending out of the health budget and if I read right he is going to redirect it into the reduction of waiting times. All good stuff. More power to him and his team.

No doubt splitting an overstaffed centralised organisation into four lean and mean non-overstaffed organisations will drop the overall non-front-line headcount (?) One does sort of wonder about how – if four is good (local input and all that) – eight might be even better although twenty is OTT …. Whatever.

I haven’t found the bit about the reporting schedule of when we will get to see the goals and some account of progress towards meeting them.

I mean some projections that have numbers alongside them ie how much to be saved where and how long it will take. Just broad brush stuff. OK – it’s early days – maybe just an estimate of when we might expect to hear something along these lines …. are we talking a month, six months, a year or what?

    The total number of people employed in the NZ health sector is about 250000, of which about 17000 are doctors and about 70000 are nurses. This adds up to about 87000 of medical personnel. The medical personnel can’t function without support staff (managers, technical, housekeeping etc), but 163000 of the latter seems a touch too extensive. Assuming that there’s one support person required for each medical person it still leaves 76000 people. What do they do?

Yesterday evening (around 6pm) we went for a drive out to Lyttleton and back.
On the way out we say 3 absolutely kamakazi cyclists.

Two of them were riding in the middle of the road, on both sides of the road including into oncoming traffic that was stopping to make way for them.

Another rode straight through a red light with oncoming traffic. Again – cars were swerving and stopping to make way.

None of them had lights or refelctors. They were all wearing dark clothing. No helmets etc.

If they’d been run over it would have served them right.

Christchurch really has crap drivers but these took it to a whole new level.

A local told reporters they were out running and believed the body was that of a “young man” based on his clothing.

A Manurewa woman (unnamed) has been jailed for neglect after her morbidly obese dog dies. Interesting precedent. Will this apply to human children as well? And they jailed her. When sometimes in nz we don’t even jail rapists and violent offenders

So in New Zealand you get jailed for overfeeding your dog. No jail though for granny bashing in the service of an regime-approved cause, shoplifting while representing the people in parliament, etc. Those who inflict life wrecking injury also regularly get off with barely a stern talking to. We have a bizarre justice system.

Chloe seemed to have a real ‘look of defeat’ about her, and the MP-for-Wigram needs to trim her fringe up a bit. It’s hanging all over her eyes.

I am trying to read the report of the inquiry into abuse in care. A few comments:

1. They should sack their website team. The site is borderline unreadable
2. Whoever thought it was a good idea to mix Maori and English into one report in the way that it has been done is an idiot.
3. Why can’t I find a single, downloadable PDF version of it?
4. Including survivor’s stories as part of the ongoing text interrupts the effect of the report.
5. The cumulative effect is that it is likely to have people give up reading it when we really need the opposite to happen. Reading and understanding this report is being made significantly more difficult than it should be, especially given its size.

  I see some strong condemnation of the utility and safety of the “boot camp” regime. It never worked, here or anywhere else in the world, whether it was called Borstal, Corrective Training or whatever.
  ” The commission said that research demonstrated that boot camps and other harsh “short sharp shock” interventions for youth are ineffective at reducing repeat offending.”
  But never underestimate New Zealand’s ability to take a shit idea and think it can do it better.
