Let’s hope Old Joe is recovering at his mansion in Delaware and the secret service have made sure the nuclear weapons control football and his PlayStation controller aren’t in the same room with him, some are speculating that he may be in fact deceased, luckily for the democrats death won’t stop the old guy from voting for himself .

A designated survivor is mentioned. There is also another security activator thing known as a “biscuit” like a credit card, with codes on it. Wiki has a good description if that can be relied on.

  If Harris was as ruthless as most politicians – think Helen Clark or John Key – she’d round up Biden’s cabinet and do the 25th Amendment now. Biden’s team can fight back, in fact that’s the main problem with using the 25th, but after he basically threw them under the bus on Sunday I don’t think too many would give a shit.

    I read there are some timing rules around being on State ballots that have passed – that mean that the incumbent can only be replaced on the ballot upon decease.
    
    I am sure a State funeral with weeping senior Democrats will be a great start to the Convention – where a great show of party coming together in Unity will elevate Kamala to the Supreme Court vacancy that is about to conveniently open up (following the sudden death of a Liberal Justice after a short illness) and clear the way for Big Mike leading a national unity ticket!

    For 240 years–that’s two and a half centuries–the US has transitioned power with a process and in a manner so predictable and stable that like the rising and setting of the sun we take it as almost a natural fact.
    
    Meanwhile, in the parliamentary world of Westminster, elections are called early or delayed, all at the personal whim, or for the politically expedient reasons, of those in power. Prime Ministers are changed by a very opaque process that somewhat resembles a palace coup, with a lot of murmurings, doors open and close, no comment, no comment, mumble, mumble, and suddenly up pops a new PM, and often several pop up within a very short space of time. Yet somehow we muddle through, and we don’t think it’s the end of the world.
    
    Yet in war, in economic and social emergency, after assassinations and impeachments, the transition of power in the US has been a constant, on that centuries-old tick-tock 4-year cycle.
    
    If the Republic can survive the fearsome onslaught of a Chewbacca-like creature invading the sanctity of the US Capitol, it’ll survive the demise of a doddery old fool and the temporary elevation of his cackling sidekick.

      The comparison is apt. There has been huge growth in ‘permanent administrative state’ AKA federal bureaucracy in recent decades. Like the 1980’sschlerotic USSR’s Nomenklature.
      
      for 1960-2000 federal govt spend averaged about 18% of GDP, now it’s up to 24%

        Of course the comparison–especially yours–is not apt. By your standard almost every Western country, and many more besides, is a “late-stage USSR”, which couldn’t be further from the truth given the endless structural, political and historical differences between them.
        
        Tom’s point is quite subtle and has some merit, if limited. My reply to him was to make it clear that such a tight bow should not be drawn too far, if at all, which is what you’re attempting to do by comparing rather superficial aspects of very different states.

As noted earlier Shane Reti has sacked the board of Health NZ after incompetence in implementing Labour’s merger and appointed the NEW Chair as commissioner.
This contrasts sharply with the Reserve Bank, that has been an absolute disaster under Adrian Orr with losses in the billions, asset bubbls, runaway inflation, the cost of living crisis. And where Willis and Seymour reappointed Labour’s Chair. It’s like parts of the government want to repair the country and other parts are intent on embedding Labour’s legacy.

      They have progressed few areas quickly, there are a couple that they have pushed through:
      – the fast-track development process
      – removing cellphones from schools
      – mandating 3 hours be spent on the 3Rs
      – they have also stopped the explosive increases in government spending
      – refocused the reserve bank on controlling inflation
      – set the tone that all NZers are equal under the law
      – returned tax rules for all businesses to the same criteria ie residential landlords
      
      We need to celebrate these initial wins but like you I would like to see them doing more and faster.
      
      They are struggling with the legacy they have been left. Which due to Luxon playing nice will end up not getting pinned on those responsible. Luxon should be spending more on communicating how much vandalism the last mob did. Scrutinising and accountability for the boards of government departments is required and some strengthening of fudicial responsibilities for these boards ie the must manage within their budgets or face legal proceedings.

        Most of the OCR increases occurred under the ‘dual mandate’ old regime. A lot of this stuff is just window dressing. Property developers and landlords will be cheering loudly at the genuine ‘wins’ delivered so far, the vast majority who are struggling with out of control councils, forced maorification, the erosion of democracy, a weak activist judiciary, and ongoing climate hysteria will be distinctly underwhelmed. How are we ‘equal under the law’ when Iwi are on track to own the coastline and seabed, and Judith Collins won’t release the legal advice the previous government received as to who owns the water?

    It needs repeating often and loudly the the coalition government has to repair 6 years of left wing vandalism, incompetence and ideology. There are fires burning on all fronts. While they are making strong progress (ie appointing a commissioner to Health NZ), they still have to establish how very bad the damage is pretty much everywhere.
    This will take months if not years, and with an openly hostile public service obstructing progress is even harder than otherwise it should be.
    It won’t happen overnight but it will happen!

  The issue for the new Ministers is whether he can carry out the new Government’s policies and is the best person for the role. Agreed if he was going to by guided by Grant Robertson’s ghost he would not have been suited to the job and hence not reappointed. One can take it that the new Ministers are confident that he can continue to undertake the role and implement Government policy.
  By the way, I think it is not the most polite thing to refer to the two Ministers by surnames only especially when you referred to the Health Minister and the Governor by their full names. At least use the prenominals Mrs and Mr.

Reti just reiterated they are focused on better patient health outcomes. Ok so let’s not focus on health but singing some chant before work is more important?

  I really don’t get why National won’t support ACT’s principles of the Treaty bill.
  Isn’t it obvious that this Maorification of NZ is one of the most divisive and destructive things being inflicted on us at the moment? Some of it is being unwound, and rightly so, but for some reason, spelling out what should be blindingly obvious in a democracy, which is that we’re all equals, is a bridge too far for National. Since when has it become divisive (as claimed by the PM) to stand on the side of the blindingly obvious?

      The panel of three educated upper class white ladies on last night’s episode of HDPA’s “The Huddle” gave their regime-approved view of Biden’s presidency and the possible Harris candidacy. HDPA had been mocking Biden’s condition which seemingly became obvious only after June 28 (maybe it was the Matariki magic?) but can’t seem to connect dots any further. One of the guests, Sherson or Pagani (I can’t remember which), described Biden’s presidency as successful without explaining a single successful policy. They sure didn’t mention the regime and media’s constant allusions to an imminent fascist threat from the other team and weaponised justice system deployed, banana republic style, to put down said threat. Nor did they mention 10m illegal immigrants, the dire world geopolitical situation or any of the rampant energy and food price inflation that besets ordinary Americans. The increased focus on US politics is leading to some appalling takes. Note Hosking and HDPA are the only NZ corporate media I consume.

    Nah Hosking was just doing an interview. He didn’t challange the obviously partisan answers becuase the interviewee would just repeat the answer with more words. What it was, and Mike said it before hand, was the Dem view of things in the US.
    
    Having watched dozens of these interviews (online), the Dem and Rep talking heads just repeat the current party line regardless of the facts. They are worthless. The only people worth interviewing are the non aligned commentators who tend to give more considered, fact based, views.

      I listen to her show by podcast so I can fast forward the ads at the start and end of each clip. You’re not getting anything “live” or “breaking” so listening on a few hours delay is not a problem. I freely admit that this will be another reason why the media’s revenue is slipping – podcast metrics are likely to measure the skipping of ads.

Its legal name is Te Pou Matakana Ltd, and it has the Whanau Ora contract for the North Island.

    In the old days a full list of ‘core’ public servants (excluding Post Office, Railways, sworn Police, military (officers and other ranks) and a few others) was published annually for all to see. It was colloquially called the ‘Stud Book’. It was restricted to within the public service in the late 1970’s when there was heightened privacy concerns and disappeared with Rogernomics.
    There was no real concern then because Public Service CEO’s were paid a pittance then (for example the General Manager of the then NZ Electricity Department would have been paid far less in real terms than what EACH of the CEO’s of the four Gentailers and Transpower are paid now).

  It looks like the people involved are more than happy to saturate themselves in Maori mysticism, the public service is now thoroughly politicised: if you are not onboard for a ‘Te Ao Maori journey’ and not committed to ‘the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi’ then you will be weeded out, and if applying for a job you will not be hired. The door is barred to you. You might as well have Te Pati Maori running our government departments. Shameful that this politicisation has happened, where government departments are now cesspools of cultural brainwashing.     I have been looking for a job vaguely for a few months. Kind of fed up with all the crap that comes with self employment (eyes wide open, I know the grass is not greener, just different). But I will never be that desperate that I will apply anywhere that has more Maori words in the job ad than English. I will not prostitute myself by pretending to believe in Maori wonderfulness, singing Maori prayers or professing to be on a te ao journey (whatever that is).
    
    I can’t be alone here – and I’m very good at what I do. So government departments must be missing out on applications from many, many skilled and principled people. And that folks is how you end up with a public service full of average skills and no principles or backbone.

      Ben has been highlighting similar issues. It was rife in advertisements 3-4 years ago that one had to subscribe to the principles of partnership under the treaty of Waitangi. Like you I wouldn’t apply for a job that required that – I don’t believe in the principle of partnership. Instead I radically believe that the Treaty bought Māori into the fold with the rest of the citizens, enjoying the same protections and privileges the Crown provided all its subjects.
      
      I believe that some of these TOW requirements have been written into the Public Services Act. If that is correct then the current government need to get those sections changed to serve the interests of all NZers equally. Unfortunately like many on here I don’t know if ACT – NZF will get the support from National to make this happen.

  I can assure everyone when I was in Hospital 20 months ago it has improved drastically when I had my hip operation on June 10, I was very surprised how most my nurses were new, as opposed to union and Labour lies that hiring has been halted, the physio was new started that day, I only waited 6 months and 6 days after seeing specialist, two women at the mobility clinic had only waited 4 months.     The report said the hulls were in very good condition given the age of the vessels. This was because they did not sail in very heavy seas which is what causes metal fatigue of the hulls.
    The report is relevant because it indicates that there is sufficient time (starting today) to scope, design, order and commission new ferries before the existing ferries reach end of life. This assumes decisions are made in a timely manner eg the scope (particularly the type of ship and shore facilities) and budget are signed off by Cabinet within the next few months.

  Coincidentally, the most disaster prone Interislander vessel, Aratere, was built under and has been operated according to the DNV classification society rules. In practice this means annual, intermediate and class renewal surveys by DNV surveyors. Who, it would seem never noticed any shortcomings in the technical condition of this fine vessel. In addition, this pride of the Spanish shipbuilding has to undergo the regular ISM Code audits to maintain the validity of its Ship Safety Management Certificate, the audits which, very likely are conducted by the auditors from the very same DNV. In addition, there’s an entity called Maritime NZ, which is supposed to carry out comprehensive (and regular) Flag State inspections.
  Wonder what standards all those surveyors, auditors and inspectors adhere to? They can’t be very observant, if they kept missing all very obvious problems, can they? The Interislander technical management doesn’t deserve a very high mark for their performance either.
  
  Kaitaki and Kaiarahi ferries are classed by Lloyds, and are subject to the same inspection and audit regime.
  
  BTW: I agree, that all those vessels have still plenty of life left in them. They’re just getting a bit long in the tooth, many systems on board will now be obsolete and their continuing operation is going to be more and more expensive. Particularly, considering the fact that the economies of scale can’t be used as all vessels are so different from each other.
  
  There’s no such thing as a ship, which is “too old”. A former NZ-flagged vessel “Spirit of Freedom” just went to the knackers yard in the US after 45 years of a service much harder that what Interislander does. There’s another formerly NZ-flagged vessel “Will Watch”, which is still operated somewhere in the Indian Ocean after 51 years, by NZ fishing company Sealord. Plenty of fish factory ships flagged in NZ are well over 30 years old and are also running fine.

  Maggy – the phrase “Boot Camp” is an American term for what we know in New Zealand as “basic training” or the All Arms Recruit Course, which is a 14-week long course that all soldiers have to successfully complete when they join the Army.
  
  I think it highly unlikely that the young offenders in the “boot camp” programme would be put through the same course as ordinary NZ Army soldiers (or soldiers in the US Army, for that matter).
  
  Incidentally, if anyone is interested in gaining an insight into the NZ Army’s basic training course, I can recommend “Nothing Significant to Report” by Dario Nustrini.

  Maggy: When this pilot is completed, it will be very important to watch how “success” is defined.
  
  In short, one could run a program that proclaimed zero recidivism – for 14 days after “graduation” – without also pointing out that the offence free period was only 14 days, and graduates had a supervisor/mentor with them 24/7.
  
  Whenever a lack of repeat offending is mentioned, you need to look at the time period referred to. When no time period is given, the results are almost certainly spin.
  
  Workman was always good at this, claiming that program X or Y had “only a 20% recidivism rate vs. the average 50%” without specifying how long graduates of his program du jour had not reoffended.
  
  I very much doubt that this “boot camp program” will be any more successful than the many which have failed in the past, which just turned out much fitter criminals with new criminal skills picked up from their mates. I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

I am not the greatest fan of the Wellington NewstalkZB morning host, Nick Mills.
But I have to say that his comments this morning (about 9.45) about the media conference for Ardie Savea yesterday were bang-on.
The All Black No 8 is forsaking the Hurricanes for the largely Samoan Moana Pacific.
The press conference formally announcing the story, which had been broken last week, was, so John Campbell unxiously told us, restricted to Pacific journalists and journalism students.
Campbell told us proudly – and so did his employer, TVNZ – that he was the only Palangi journalist to be honoured with an invite.
Mills got stuck into it all. How was this separatism allowed to happen?
How and why did TVNZ permit itself to be part of it?
Did Savea agree to it? Was it at his stipulation?
What would be the reaction if a similar media conference was held – and non-white journalists were barred?
If you can find a copy of the broadcast it’s well worth a listen to.

The first new aluminium smelter in the United States for 45 years is planned by Century Aluminum, of Chicago.

The US Government has been lined up for a $US500 million ($NZ836.26m) grant for the new $US5 billion ($NZ8.36b) “green” plant using “renewable” power. This energy costs about $US10 ($NZ16.70) an hour more in America.

The US has four aluminium smelters, down from 23 in the year 2000.

Century Aluminum is betting on solar and wind-power projects generating surplus power after 2030.

  I watched an interesting presentation by John Clauser on YT the other day.
  In it he shows us some of the mistakes made in the IPCC AR reports. E.g. when trying to show that there is an energy flow imbalance (which would mean the earth warms up), they choose to round some of the estimated forcing values by more than their claimed margin of error estimations and they make basic errors when adding values together. It’s unclear how they even come up with the margin of error values when adding estimations together, but when he uses the common method of taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the individual margins of error, the claimed imbalances often fall within that margin of error (IOW, there is no measurable imbalance).

A beautiful sunny day in the Waikato today and, I believe, over most of the country, hardly a cloud in the sky. Yet solar is producing 30Mw of over 5000Mw total generation.
There’s a decent breeze blowing yet wind is producing a paltry 174Mw.
Thank god for hydro and geothermal.
Yet the last significant hydro generation project was stymied by, you guessed, the Greens.
God help us all if they ever get back into government.

Darleen Tana has apparently been seen at parliament – has she been in the House? It began sitting 24 minutes ago.

  There were no seating days between 17-Dec 1971 & 8-June 1972
  16-March 1973 & 5-June 1973
  10-October 1975 & 23-June 1976
  and so on
  Back in those days parliament had much longer recesses with hardly any sitting days in the first half of 1972, 1973 and 1976

    There is bit of a difference in that back then there were no list MPs and all were elected. There were also relatively limited communications (no email etc).
    
    As a result, MPs back then likely had to spend a lot more time communicating with their electorate.

I realise that we should not discuss religion as quite correctly its a personal matter. However as a non believer I now find myself reviewing that position with Presidents Bidens decision not to seek reelection. Did he not say that only ” The God Almighty” could change his decision to seek reelection. Wow he obviously got the call.

Missed the start of the Ewes, but heard Simon say something about NZF’s Tanya Unkovich accused of being ‘Transphobic’ after posting to FB that trans-genders are ‘mentally ill’

Tanya rejects the claim, maintaining someone had set up a fake account in her name.
Apparently it’s been referred to the ‘all powerful’ privileges committee.

Must be shaking in her boots. LOL!!

Thank the Lord we’ve actually got some normal people in Parliament.

Just saying.

  It is an axiom that “transgender” people are mentally ill. They are saying their perfect body was afflicted with the wrong brain, and people should explore this theme while it is legal to do so. It will be too late if the law commission (I think) has its wicked way.
