Biden will not run for president announcement today…..
My thoughts are, I believe he will stay as president till election, but not stand on the ballot at election.
Your thoughts?……am I barking up the wrong tree or what do you believe the outcome will be…stay/resign/article 25?

        Cacklin’ Kamala is used to playing second fiddle. Willie Brown organised her political start in San Francisco (she was underneath him if you get my drift) but once his mayoral run started, Brown’s wife insisted that she be on his arm not Kamala. Kamala was said to have responded to Willie in plain language, not in the trademark unintelligible waffle the world knows her for. I guess in that case she was unburdened of what has been.

  I think the Democrat royalty is in panic mode. Biden moves like my father did when he was 94. At 91 he still toured South Africa with us. Kroonstad, Kruger, Port Elizabeth, Knysna, Hermanus (watched whales 🐳), Cape Town (visited Robbin Island), Karoo National Park and moved around freely and held conversations with family members and people who worked at establishments where we visited.
  
  If it was not for the phenomenon that is Trump, Biden would have resigned earlier.

The headline says, “The Harapaki Wind Farm is fully operational ahead of time and within budget, generating enough electricity to power most of Hawke’s Bay”. It’s a lie, a cruel, bald-faced deception. It is not going to power “most of Hawkes Bay” – simply not true.

A quick look online says, “A modern wind turbine produces electricity 70-85% of the time”. That’s delusional too. Much of that claimed “time” a turbine couldn’t run a torch let alone a house. It goes on to say that offshore turbines typically generate about 41% of the theoretical maximum output. Most turbines are onshore while their offshore counterparts are twice as expensive and only last a fraction of the time. Onshore turbines have a much lower theoretical maximum output – 24%.

So the headline should have read, “The Harapaki Wind Farm will generate enough electricity to power less than 24% of Hawkes Bay’s needs”. But is worse than that. There are line losses, shutdown time for repairs and other operational balancing issues that cut the “theoretical maximum output”. Its now less than 20% of HB’s needs.

In the U.K., which boasts of being the windiest country in Europe, the Royal Academy of Engineering says wind power will reduce the need for conventional power capacity by 4,000 MW, a 16% capacity credit. In windy Ireland it is 14% and in calmer Germany its 4%.

No one is going to tolerate being without electricity although many of us are in for a rude shock if we try electrifying too much of our energy demand so back up is essential. In Germany the back-up required is 80%. On present plans and allowing for growth we will need Indonesian or our own coal for years to come. Weird thinking. Strange economics!

  Quite right Tom. Information I’ve seen over at Powerline blog is that wind and solar only supplies 8% of the world’s energy. Fossil fuels are still 81%!

    450GW of solar installed last year. With 20-25% capacity factor that is about 100GW average. Humanity uses about 3000GW average, so installation rate of solar is getting close to rate need to supply all electricity if you assume a 30year life for solar.
    
    Lithium battery production cost is getting down to about $50/kWh, easily cheap enough to supply a day or two of storage. And EVs will soon undercut cost of IC cars (see for example latest BYD cars)
    
    If you live in a relatively sunny location it is pretty close to point where a large (oversized to deal with cloudy days) pv install on your roof and a few $k in batteries will be cheaper than buying electricity from the grid at retail rates.
    
    But we still need a long term energy storage solution to deal with seasonal demand and supply difference. Expectation is that hydrogen will do that job, there is a lot of work going in to reducing cost of water electrolysis, and won’t matter that it is only about 40-50% efficient as a battery if it only needs to store 20-30% of all energy used.
    
    I’m fairly optimistic that this provides a realistic route to entirely renewable energy production at prices similar to what we currently pay for energy. It’s early days but the power of technology and manufacturing learning curves to bring prices down are pretty well established.

      This time of year basically useless.
      For using batteries, you also need all the equipment to connect it and supply the grid. That is more expensive than the batteries. Then you need the standby generation when batteries aren’t charged.
      If you go to the Oz generation data for a place like SA, they use diesel engines, not batteries to support them over the duck canyon. Now why would that be? Could it be that as with most of the renewables, they are over-promised and under-delivered, or is it just that they are a waste of money? Too expensive and unreliable for grid operation.

    nuclear is not cheap enough. About $6000/kW for best-in-class South Korean AP1400 Pressurized Water Reactors built in places without insane regulatory requirements, but PV costs about the same even after taking account of 20-25% capacity factors, and it will only get cheaper as more automated systems are developed for building grid scale plants and energy storage gets cheaper.

      Dont buy the spin. The costs of Nuclear are wildly exaggerated by the green movement and would be a lot lower without the insane level regulatory and other costs. There are extremely safe 4th gen plans that are struggling to get permission, its so much easier for the generators to put in (pretty useless) wind.

      I look most days, you will see that while wind has ~ 1.5x the max generation compared to coal, NZ almost always produces more power from coal then wind. Just looking now
      
      Coal : Max 750, current 645
      Wind : Max 1259, current 78
      
      Wind is practically worthless as a reliable source of power. But it thrashes PV solar in that it can generate at night.
      
      Stop drinking the green coolade and get with reality. If we build out massive wind and solar we would STILL need to build out more ‘other’ for the many times wind and solar do nothing. Making Wind and solar crazy expensive. Does the cost of PV solar include the cost of a coal, hydro, geothermal or Nuclear plant to back it up at night. And dont talk batteries, thats just batshit crazy.

  Here in NZ, according to the Transpower site that shows how much electricity we’re getting from our wind turbines, the installed capacity of ~1250MW sometimes reduces our need for ‘conventional’ (aka reliable) capacity by ~20MW.
  In other words, sometimes they wouldn’t power 10,000 toasters.
  
  No matter how ‘modern’ a wind turbine is, it will produce 0KW of electricity if the wind isn’t blowing.

    Windfarms are counterbalanced by hydro power stations and there are little or no counterbalance constraints at present in NZ. So if a windfarm is estimated to produce an average x kWh a year, then that is x (minus say 20% for losses) kWh a year available for consumption.
    Meridian would have been careful with its figures otherwise stockmarket analysists would make adverse comments and could raise the ire of NZX regulators for over-egging the shares.
    There will be a point when wind/solar counterbalancing becomes saturated requiring more hydro stations or pumped storage schemes (eg Onslow but its scale is far too large for the immediate future) or batteries or even cheap capital cost thermal generation (eg gas turbines fired by imported LNG).

      We are already at the point where the wind variability can’t be countered by the hydro ramping, especially when lake levels and river flows are low. With nearly all the wind being in the NI and the hydro ramping on the Waitaki, they are regularly running into DC constraints. They are being covered by the GTs while we still have gas available

        What sickens me about Onslow is they investigated it at probably millions, they found it would not be viable at a cost of 5 billion dollars, yet Ardern thought she would simply fire ahead when the price hit to 15 billion, what was worse, this venture was only for a dry year, so stand by only, utterly ridiculous to re look at that

        Like the theoretical maximum outputs of solar and wind, 80-85% is the theoretical maximum output of pumped hydro.
        
        I think in NZ, taking into account the construction cost, and unknown factors that will push the budget and delivery date back by 500%, you can look forward to 50-60% maximum.
        
        But pumped hydro only works when there are parts of the year where there is an abundant excess of generating capacity.
        
        If you can show that we do not burn natural gas and/or coal at all in any given year, and therefore an abundance of hydro power, then maybe the idea has merit. Otherwise “pumped hydro”, like EVs will be powered off Indonesian Coal.
        
        Burn dirty coal to fill a reservoir that will return 50-65% of energy during a power shortage. Be far simpler to burn the coal without losing 35-50% in evaporation and losses.
        
        If you have low electricity production to begin with, the $ cost to the consumer skyrockets, or you end up with electricity shortages as you try to refill the pumped hydro lakes.
        
        The harsh reality is that we burn natural gas and coal during the winter, and in summer if there is a drought or the lakes are low.
        
        Hydro Dam:
        Hydro Storage Battery: Yes
        Primary producer of power: Yes. All power produced comes from river flow pooled into a dam fed by rain and snow. No overhead. Every MW produced has no per MW cost. We do not pay Mother nature.
        
        Pumped Hydro Dam:
        Hydro Storage Battery: Yes.
        Primary producer of power: No. All power produced comes with an overhead of 35-50%, taken from a primary producer of power. Every MW produced incurs a 35% to 50% ‘tax’.
        
        The problem NZ faces is NOT electricity storage, but electricity production.
        
        Pumped hydro in NZ, under the current electricity production / consumption profile, is just another way of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
        
        And putting the heaviest chairs down the end where the ship is listing most.
        
        You can be excused for not knowing the science. Others can’t.

        Onslow would not be a ‘perpetual motion’ scheme since it is using energy from outside the scheme to ‘charge’ Lake Onslow (The US Patent Office initially declined to grant a patent for negative feedback amplifiers since they thought it was a ‘perpetual motion’ device where in reality they need power from an outside source to drive them – something which the inventor readily accepted). In a way Lake Onslow or schemes with similar capabilities is just what is required. Unfortunately there are three downsides to the scheme which is why National canned it:
        1. An enormous capital cost which would have provided limited economic returns since it would be some years before it could be fully utilised. Manapouri Power Station was in a similar situation, it was not until prospective loads were high enough to support it. In both cases there was limited scope for incremental construction – the tunnels in both cases are ‘all or nothing’.
        2. Poor location from a power transmission point of view.
        3. The project would be poorly executed under the previous Government – witness the new ferries, Auckland light rail, state housing developments etc -ie they could not organise a piss-up in a brewery.

        You have got things confused. The capital cost and load factor have nothing to do with plant efficiency.
        When you have Francis turbines working near their design point, they are over 90% efficient. That is why hydros have multiple generators rather than one big one – and now stations like Aratiatia and Matahina different sized generators – to operate near their design point. That efficiency is whether they are pumping or generating. Add in a few more losses for transformers and round cycle over 80%.
        I might not know the “science” but I know power station engineering as that has been my job for over 40 years.

        I will clarify. It is the things they will discover during construction that will push out the budget and delivery by 500% that will not be mitigated and that will continually mar the outpower / input power ratio.
        
        i.e. leakage, seepage, porous rock, previously undiscovered channels, lack of grid power to fill the lake, etc etc
        
        The mitigation of which will wildly drive up cost and completion date. And the project has already been shut down as not being cost effective.
        
        Besides, pump storage is NOT a renewable resource. It is loss driven storage. Why fill the lake by burning Indonesian coal when you could build a hydro filled by Mother nature.

        Electronic and power engineering design, has also been a pursuit of mine for several decades.
        
        Power station engineering however is not the same as geology and understanding how river beds and valleys are formed and conditioned by pressure, sedimentation, and metamorphic transformation over millions of years; and why said locations make better areas to dam than areas not previously subject to that transformation over millions of years.
        
        Also, natural swimming pool filtration systems, that use the principles of graduated sediment layer compression are not new, and utilise some of the principles and processes mentioned above.

    We have plenty of rivers that could have dams, or rivers that will take distributed flow generators.
    
    It is like having a stable of Ferrari’s you can drive, but everyday you drive the Morris Minor that continually breaks down. Nuclear power is the Bugatti Veyron.
    
    And still you drive the Morris Minor, spending 75% of your time waiting for AA to turn up.

      No Jack many hydro don’t run 24/7. They have the potential to run 24/7. The station are often only running 8 or 16 hours a day to support the grid over the peaks.
      Look at Clyde where they run the units either flat out or off.

      To get generation out of a river, you need both flow and head. You also need somewhere geologically suitable to dam them. That site has to be sure that there won’t be landslides into the headlake. There are no sites in the NI that meet those criteria to make more than about 50MW baseload station.         The last hydro on the rivers Karapiro, Waitaki, Roxburgh have both minimum flow and rate of change requirement. For most of other stations, the lake to lake ones, they can shut flow off completely. That lets their lakes refill though it all needs careful management as they have narrow working ranges and not much capacity. Makes it vary difficult for the Waikato to cover wind, though Benmore and the Ohau chain are very good at it because Lake Benmore has a lot more storage.

      The rating is misleading. The turbine rating is significantly less than the line shown. That line is the generator continuous overload rating at unity power factor. They can boost the turbine inlet pressures to run there if they have wells available but at lower efficiency.

  The nameplate power is the maximum power that the system can output. It isn’t the typical power or average power and certainly isn’t the minimum power.
  
  To power Hawke’s Bay requires requires a wind farm and a back up of some sort of reliable power. That effectively doubles the cost of building such a power system.
  
  “A modern wind turbine produces electricity 70-85% of the time”. That statement is a lie wrapped in the truth.
  Yes, it will be generating power 70% of the time, but massively reduced. The power in the wind goes up with the cube of the wind speed. Say you get full power output of 1000kW at 60kph. At 20kph you will only 37kW – less than 4% of the power.

      Yes it’s mainly the brutal conditions and massive maintenance requirements in those locations eg Transpower paints all its pylons periodically (for corrosion protection) – the period in wellington is about 10-12 yearly while in Centra O it’s over 100 years. Due to salt in the air – abrasive and corrosive. Imagine now moving parts submerged in water.
      
      I don’t think any tidal plant of size has made it past the prototype stage anywhere in the world.

    We don’t use tides because they are intermittent, so still not dispatchable.
    
    But a more important reason is the marine environment is harsh. Salt is corrosive. The water contains things like seaweed and logs that have a nasty habit of clogging up the turbine.

        I would say Ngai Tahu aren’t indigenous, but rather they were the latest colonial conquerors of the South Island (17th Century from memory, they came down from North Island and ate the last occupants). Similarly Chathams, and really a lot of North Islands where 19th century holders of lands were simply the last set of conquerors that had eaten the original indigenes.

    They have the same issue in Tirau.
    Billions were spent on the Expressway only to lose the 20 minutes you save queuing through Tirau.
    Not great having a crossing bisect a State Highway.

    Northland is under serviced for roads because it has been historical low population destiny and there is not a lot up there (yes some tourism, farming, horticulture and fishing but what else of genuine significance?).
    
    A few years back some mining companies were interested in prospecting in Northland and local Iwi said they would oppose any such activity strenuously.
    
    Northland GDP is 9.65Billion annualised at Infometrics last estimate in Mar 2024. And has been declining since 2021….

        The problem with MMP is that the margin between winning and losing is perilous. There are several scenarios which would have the government falling in 2026.
        
        Look at it this way. There are virtually no people who voted green or Labour in 2023 who will vote for National in 2026. What if Winston finally retires, or becomes incapacitated? There goes New Zealand First. Will those voters switch to ACT or National or stay home? Based on National’s current policy stances they will stay home.
        
        At a macro level, the differences between this government and the last government are not as large as the media makes out. Sure, it is much less wasteful. Some of its policies are very welcome. But at a macro level it is not transformational. It has stopped the terrible decline of the last government, but there is no reversal. If we look over the next 30 years, it has postponed New Zealand’s decline from first world status, not prevented it.
        
        I will change my view when the Zero Carbon Act is repealed, we have a new Public Service Act, and there is a relentless push for GDP per capita growth in all policy design.
        
        I expect one or more National cheer leaders to tell me I am writing bullshit. However that is not enough to change my mind. 😅

    I am actually surprised that there is not more lobbying for the repeal of the Act. I think that the Government relies on people never having read it. Sadly, I have, from beginning to end 😂

    Kowtow – I agree the selection shouldn’t be based on gender, it should be purely on competency.
    
    The reality of bodyguard protection detail is you need to be of a size to guard the body – in this case a 6’3” heavy set person. No one less than 6’3” should be on that team. Also they need to be able to manhandle him if required ie lift him and carry.

First off the block is a fat reducing drug. Expect an intense advertising campaign letting people know anyone can lose weight with a pill, in order to build public demand.
Cue the appearance of a new obesity rights groups advocating the government fund the drug.
Lots of sob stories about fat people unable to afford fat loss drugs. The media do not need to be bought as they will do any anti government story for free. “Weight justice” groups will pop up as always “Maori and Pacifica are disproportionally affected by this racist government’s health policies”.

  I assume you mean drugs like Ozempic and Zepbound. If they are as successful in reducing weight as the studies so far suggest then from a cost to benefit perspective it would make a lot of sense to find l fund these drugs. Reducing obesity would prevent a lot of other health spending later on and, therefore, Pharmac should be getting these drugs into the hands of everyone who needs them.

One thought expressed –
The Trump assassination attempt was the predictable result of our mainstream media, politicians and institutions systematically raising the rhetorical tensions by demonising ordinary conservative people and ideas as radical, extreme, far-right, racist, and so on.

Is it that the main stream media are not reporting any motive for the shooter because it was main stream media which radicalized him?

So what has New Zealand main stream media done here – or is this just hopping on the same bandwaka?

    I don’t recall anything similar on the Right, not even towards the likes of Thatcher and Reagan . Respect, sure, but that’s about as far as it went.

    And as an extra on that front, this article writes of the sudden turnabout from the Democrats about Biden’s “condition” – with the MSM immediately falling in line on both narratives.
    
    Iin particular with Barack Obama and him having to lead a brain-frozen Biden off the stage at Clooney’s LA fundraiser in early June, and then sitting back and staying quiet while the MSM pushed the “Deep Fakes” bs about it. Whereas now the NYT is writing about how “shaken” Obama was by seeing Biden’s “decline”. As the article says:

If he says Biden isn’t senile, they fall in line and begin a relentless campaign to push that narrative.   I heard on NZ radio a lefty commentator (sorry can’t recall who) saying it appears he just wanted to shoot a famous person, due to his phone having internet searches of several high profile politicians. This is a deliberate strategy to minimise that Trump was the one shot at.

Now if he was clearly researching how to get sniper access to venues they were going to be at then that would be more compelling.         Ghost I admire your idealism. This media you speak of that only wants to report facts is not the media that I see that are constantly partisan and expressing opinions. For instance, it was the NZ Herald that took the stance that 90% of NZers should be vaccinated and it was their job to lobby for that outcome.
        
        I think you will find the media see themselves as shapers of ‘right think’and that is more important than being objective reporters of facts. Which in turn has led to the all-time low trust in legacy media.
        
        As an example, you and I have both found really interesting SS sniper interviews giving insights on the Trump assassination. But we don’t see this being done by legacy media. Why not? Why aren’t they calling out the ridiculousness of a 5’something bodyguard protecting a 6’3” target? Is it because championing DEI ideology is more important than the facts?

The interviews ae good, they are are full of much information that people need to know. They are views from an inside prospective, but even the former agent I watched said he wanted to see what the agents did, knew, what happened, he is waiting for the information to be released.

      My original point was the media in general are scared this will give more credence to Trump. They want to supress the positive publicity he will get from this. The legacy media are generally shown to be biased left – there are a few exceptions that are biased right. In general they are very derogatory towards Trump.
      
      No they clearly don’t just present the facts ie shooter looked up these websites etc. The media, in this instance the ZB commentator said that he was actively looking to target a famous person, not just Trump.
      
      Im not moaning or whinging or bitching or whatever else you want to put on my opinion. You are deluded or extremely naive to think the media are the guardians of truth and distributors of facts.     So he decides to make a big noise with his suicide-by-cop, perhaps without much caring who the target was – just making as big an impact as possible. Common pathology amongst school shooters etc.

        Continuing with an unwanted pregnancy doesn’t require enforcement nor consent – it is the status quo.
        
        Termination of the unborn child requires an action, not to provide that action is not the same as unconsented use and enforcement.
        
        The life support of the unborn child starts at conception; thats a fact of nature. Non-informed consent is generally given by the woman at that point. To equate this to unconsented use is a ridiculous position.
        
        Morally non-informed consent or acting without regard for consequences is the issue that should get more focus. Killing an unborn child is murder unless you reduce the unborn child to a sub-human status.

A cancerous tumour or a parasite could be given the status of unconsented use of a body – thus it is OK to kill them.       Depends on the number of potential levels of review. Reduce it to one and it wouldn’t be expensive.
      
      I still agree that lifetime imprisonment would be cheaper, but we should put it out to tender in 3rd world. Eg $1000 a year to Rwanda to imprison lifers with a million dollar penalty if they escape. We would save NZ a lot of money wasted on dead-weight prisoners.
      
      We should do similar with long term prisoner sentences in pacific island prisons with better conditions than Rwanda for perhaps $10-20k a year per prisoner. Provides jobs and income for Islands that NZ taxpayers help to support anyway. They don’t need to be unpleasant.

      Peter: That is only the case if you look at American capital punishment regimes – there are 50 of them – because murder is a state crime.
      
      It was extremely cheap in the UK…ONE appeal, if that was denied, the prisoner died within three weeks – unless the Home Secretary granted a reprieve. It was exactly the same in NZ prior to abolition in 1961, except that the person of last resort was the Attorney General and not the Home Secretary.

    I disagree, never say never. History is long and as military law has the death penalty and as New Zealand already has provisions for martial law in case of a state of emergency, it is correct to say that New Zealand already HAS the death penalty. It’s just a matter of circumstances.
    I can come up with a scenario that has New Zealand law enforcement officers legally executing New Zealanders for murder and looting within a year from today, and it wouldn’t be a bizarre science fiction scenario either.
    A major volcanic eruption in New Zealand isn’t a matter of IF, but rather When and how big? We have already seen what a worldwide pandemic looks like, my grandparents saw world war burn across the Pacific.
    Put two or even all three of those circumstances together at the same time and New Zealand is back to the law of the gun and justice by the rope.

The Electoral Commission has confirmed it is reviewing the MP’s campaign donation and expense declarations following a Q+A story about a van registered to Manurewa Marae that Kemp used at last year’s election.

The MP’s electoral return contains no reference to the marae or the use of its van.

I do hope the Greens put the rest of the girls through medical testing to try and get ahead of these ongoing health issues that seem to be diagnosed shortly after any investigation is announced.
