    600,000 Hiroshima bombs would be around 3.8×10¹⁹J of energy, but the Earth receives (intersects) about 9.3×10²¹J of solar energy each day, about 240 times as much energy as those 600,000 nukes.

  The rules around emissions from so-called Land Use, land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) were settled about 15 years ago during the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol.
  
  Those rules are under the auspices of the UNFCCC. They were not up for renegotiation at the Paris Accord discussions.
  
  LULUCF rule negotiations commenced in the late 90s. As I have commented previously, New Zealand played a key part in those negotiations. IIRC they took about 10 years to conclude.
  
  This is not my area of expertise, but AFAIK during those negotiations, no nation suggested that growth in all plants, eg grass, be allowed to count as CO2 offsets. I’ll leave it to the agricultural scientists who read kiwiblog to explain why that is so.🙂

    I am not an agricultural scientist, but 60 years ago they taught real science in schools. Back then they taught things like the carbon cycle and le Chateliers principle. The basic photosynthesis process is CO2 + H2O + energy => glucose + O2. All plants including grass absorb heat and CO2, Trees use the glucose to grow – a growing tree stores energy and carbon: however when mature the tree is in equilibrium. Grasses, left to themselves reach maturity much faster which maybe why they were excluded – except of course if animals eat the grass, the energy and carbon gets stored in the animals for a lot longer. If there is more CO2 in the air, then by Le Chatelier the photosynthesis reaction absorbs more energy from the sun

    These rules are accounting rules. They are not linked to scientific reality.
    
    To be slightly flippant, suppose we made a rule that we would say it was raining if we saw more than 3 clouds on any day. All the climate people got together and ratifiedtgat rule. This would then be the rule that all the world’s weather reports were required to use. Then suppose that there was another rule requiring people to wear raincoats on a rainy day. We would all be wearing raincoats all the time.
    
    Yes, that really is how ridiculous this climate nonsense is.

    Same for existing forests, trees, vegetation in general.

    Yes a rambling article. I think a lot of the momentum to do something about AIDS came from Hollywood and Governments not so interested until they worried about the political ramifications. At the time celebrities were dying from it and no one knew how contagious it was, hence the hysteria. I don’t think it was any great secret that people with damaged immunity from prior Stds or drug use were more susceptible.

    AIDS was real alright. Among other things, I remember it for the behaviour of male gays becoming widely known, chiefly their promiscuity.
    
    One victim in SF revealed that he had had 300 sex partners in the previous year – almost one a day. Most of those “partners” were of course fleeting encounters in some bar’s toilet with few or no words exchanged.
    
    NO I am not “homophobic” (stupid word that literally means “frightened of homos” which I have never been) and I can honestly say that my closest friend is a flagrantly gay man who is also Godfather to my children.

So here’s a snapshot of why NZ is going backwards. Iwi rights trump kiwi rights. Imagine where NZ would be if this ruling had applied in the 1840s. No port in Auckland, for example.

While I’m sympathetic for iwi rights, and they absolutely should be appropriately compensated, the fact remains that governments have the right to overrule individual property rights in the public interest. Iwi land rights should be subject to the same wider public interest test as private land rights, no less and no more. It’s not clear that this principle has been applied in this case.

  It does seem bizarre. It is hard to see how any port expansion would receive consent.
  
  I have travelled in Northland. It is sparsely populated with miles of unspoilt coasts. Why do these folk need to forage for seafood right in the place where the port is to be expanded? They could jump in the car and find other places to forage in a 20 minute drive.

  A second tough and combative test. England did a very good job at shutting the All Blacks attacks down and were competitive for 60/65 minutes. The introduction of Ratima and Barrett changed the game.
  
  Beauden Barrett once again showed his talent and ability to turn a game off the bench. It is his best position as that skill set does not shine very often when he starts. In fact in my opinion he can be very disruptive to a backline when he starts.
  
  I am happy to say he is the best and most influential player off the bench in the modern game.

It would be nice to think that they do; and that they believe in their principles regardless. However, I think that they are oblivious due to their ignorance of economics.

The MSM stories in which journalists instantly connect any incident involving a Boeing jet as a fault caused by Boeing are constant. It has almost become a new genre of news. The latest one is about a Latam 777 that had a tail strike on takeoff out of Milan.

One of the key features of the genre is a line that says “While the cause of the [insert incident] is at this stage undetermined, it comes at a time when Boeing is under heavy scrutiny after making several serious errors.”.

A tail strike is much more likely to be caused by pilot error or poorly loaded cargo than a manufacturing or design problem, but of course this is omitted from the article.

The aim of the story is not to report on the facts of the incident or the likely cause, but to build a saga that will run through media stories on an ongoing basis. Par for the course when reading the MSM.

  with 100000 commercial jet flights per day, there will of course be a small number of mechanical faults that occur. In the past they were mostly unreported (excepting major’s like engine failures that are almost always survivable anyway). But now media have decided to chase the clicks with anxiety disorder sufferers feeding them every little minor incident as headline news. Ignoring the fact that aircraft are designed to be highly fault tolerant in their designs to create high levels of safety. Takes something really extreme to bring down a plane

    Invariably Pilot Errors.
    Some years ago I was involve with Insurance of much of the countries local aircraft, and that invariably at the end of the investigations, we found Pilot error and often in the case of those with many flying hours, but New Zealand weather conditions sometimes did not help.
    Local weather conditions can be very fickle.

  Slow morning up here in the Kingdom…so I will try once again to explain why you can only have ONE “bestie” – short of course for “best friend”.
  
  “Best” is a superlative, as are “tallest” “fattest” “longest” etc.
  
  Just as there can only be one “tallest building in Auckland” or “fattest woman in the group”, you can only have ONE “best friend”.
  
  When you use the somewhat childish word “bestie” you really mean “one of my closest” friends”.

    Yes I agree David. Some quick research reveals that the language has not yet evolved to allow more than a single “bestie”. The only explanation might be that Maggie is misspelling “beastie” which is slang for ‘a friend who is especially cool’.

    Road needs to be resurfaced. The old surface is removed. The road is then covered with loose gravel. However the job is not finished. At that point the road cones are left in place with a 30 speed limit. Eventually the job is finished but it can take several weeks before the crew returns. What should be a two day job stretches into several weeks. Meanwhile cars are crawling at 30 kmh. You also deal with idiots who fly at you doing 80 and throwing up showers of stones.
    
    The other thing that is odd is road work sites where one guy is working a shovel. One guy is driving a grader. And five guys are standing in a group watching proceedings. 😅

      Yet the world and road maintenance operations managed to function just fine in the time before the invasion of the cone people.
      
      Travel anywhere else in the world and the ridiculous extremism of NZ’s road work management rules sticks out like dog’s balls. It has enormous costs, and is a major hinderance to having roads that are maintained properly – possible even to the point that it is making the road network less safe due to the sapping of resources on this useless activity the lead to less work being done on real safety improvement.

        Don: You may not be old enough to recognise a closed fist salute as the symbol of “black power” – NOT the gang of thugs in NZ, but a movement among what were then known as “blacks” in the US, which began in the late 60’s.
        
        It caused great controversy at the 1968 Olympic games…indeed if you Google “1968 Olympic…” the first “hit” is a story about said salute by a US black athlete medal winner.
