  Exactly, it made as much sense (as in little) as featuring Paula Penfold’s article in the top 3 or 4 stories about more CCP spying allegations. It was out of context (not everyone reads Stuff for context – I don’t mean people here I mean everyday NZ’ers/Maori etc).
  
  If I was running the bulletin I’d put such in-depth/feature stories as the lead items in the second news block after the first ad break (ditto Sam Hayes’ story) i.e. keep the first block of news for actual news then the second block for features and other news. Learn from the mistakes that Radio NZ made when it turned their other flagship news programmes like Checkpoint & Late Edition into a magazine type show (stopped listening as a result).
  
  Newsreader Lara Tupou was great and she read the news straight down the line without bias or gesturing (that some of Newshub’s other newsreaders did to inflict their biases on the story content).
  
  Apart from Tupou’s professionalism most of the rest of the news was let down by:
  
  *Shoddy graphics (the busy background was a distraction – most “un-news like”, looked more like a hotel lobby).
  
  *The fonts being used for “News” (as in 3 News) looked like it was designed for print, boring.
  
  *First item on the recent flooding was introduced with Stuff’s usual anti-govt headline bias (inadequate funding from the govt or such like, but that wasn’t reflected in the story at all).
  
  *First item also featured a shaky camera throughout (what were they using – a hand held cellphone)??
  
  *Their actual studio must be a “small cupboard” or something because there was no depth or panning cameras – just a constant close up type shot on the news reader. Mentioning this because this highlights the difference between a seasoned professional news broadcaster v a “cheap” podcast type setup.
  
  *The weather graphics were quite smart and appealing (well done). Except they didn’t give the temperature of the day across the nation, granted it was a quicker format but come on!
  
  I can’t believe media insiders like Shayne Curry (NZH) gave praise to the show but overlooked these obvious faults and glitches!
  
  Will I keep watching? Depends if they lift their game. Mind you they aren’t as bad as TVNZ news I suppose (will never return to watching them).
  
  Although suspect we’ll see the return of “Terrible Tova” on Monday crashing and burning the place down with her “extreme prejudice” against the Coalition Govt and immature writing style may be enough to also switch 3 News off for good as well!

  I thought the ref had a pretty good game last night, good on him for stopping play when Perenara was injured.

    Harris is a diversity hire who has given diversity hires a worse reputation than before she was hired. She has an intellect that even Adern would not envy.
    The donors may be, and probably are, very keen to get her out of the picture.

        Sorry I misunderstood the comment. I thought the discussion was about who would be the presidential candidate, not who would become president if Biden and Harris both resigned from office.
        
        It is most unlikely that Biden would step down before January, should he decide not to run for a second term. If he did so, it is fanciful to think that Harris would also step down and hand over the presidency to a Republican speaker.

      The succession rules are there for concurrent deaths. It does not apply in the situation of concurrent mental incapacity.

        Not quite. She would nominate someone for the Senate to consider as the VP. The Senate has to agree to the nominee. That person would probably be agreed to but there could be problems.
        I have no idea what would happen if the then President, Harris, was to die before any vote on the nominee was held.

        Yah. The West Wing actually had to write this into their scripts for the final episodes of their last season because the actor playing the Democrat VP actually did die!!!! And he’d played the CoS from the beginning I think?
        
        Anyway, lemons from lemonade, one of the post-election episodes was all about the procedures that had to be followed to get a new VP. A bit like a Supreme Court justice except the President nominates and then the whole Congress gets to make the call (not just the Senate as with SCOTUS).

  Joe and Jill and Hunter are now desperate for a Democrat win. If it all fails the Biden family will be prosecuted. The Ukraine deals, the Chinese deals. It is not just Joe and Hunter, it includes about 12 of the extended crooked family.
  Who knows what other Democrats will go down if Joe does not win.

  Here is a scenario I haven’t seen.
  Biden loses the election on Nov 5 but is still president until Jan 20 (to allow electors of the electoral college time to travel on horseback to Washington from all 13 states).
  
  Would Biden resign and allow the democrats to claim having the first woman of colour as president? I know – unlikely.
  
  Also unlikely, is my preferred strategy for Trump. In his acceptance speech at the convention promise to retire at 80 (his third year) and allow VP Tulsi Gabbard to become the first woman president. He should be sure to invite Hilary and Harris to the swearing in ceremony; the look on their faces will be priceless.

  I suspect that she’s struggling to come to terms with the fact that she’s even more irrelevant now than when she was a list mp in a minor opposition party.
  Add to that the fact that she can’t defend war criminals any more and that she’s shadowed every time she goes into a clothing store (those that she’s not trespassed from) and the walls must be losing in.

If it was ever possible the US Presidential election is slipping even further now into nastiness, childish claims and ugliness.

World politics is now dominated by elitism. Elected individuals think they have some ‘divine right’ to hold their office and can treat the plebs like crap. A little humility and recognition of democratic principles wouldn’t go amiss.

Went to MSD office with a friend the other day. She was applying for job seeker. Sharing as I imagine that most peeps here have t seen one in decades if ever.

Talked to the security guys while in the queue. Three of them! They said they have multiple altercations per day (apparently Sydenham and Linwood are the worst in chch) but said one Auckland office goes into lockdown an average of three times per day. Imagine working there! When we were leaving we saw them ejecting one guy who kept on his bike and rode off screaming abuse. “People find it hard to accept that they are not entitled to certain things” the guard said.

What was good is that they put the applicant right onto a work “broker” who will help them with identifying and applying for jobs. The bad part was she 100% got to choose her areas of interest where they will look for jobs, sadly these did not need to be areas in which there will likely be jobs available. Will watch the process with interest.

  A while back I took my partner there for the Job Seeker. Then changed to some supported allowance because she is not healthy to do 32 hours.
  The class of other visitors was shocking. The clothes! The stink of BO. The stink of dope! Glad to get out and into the fresh air, away from the filth.
  Good thing now for my partner. 9 weeks and she gets Super.

    More that MMP was a “set and forget” done deal that has never been upgraded to iron out the obvious bugs. We are still lamely dealing with MMP v1.0. It’s pretty much a lucky dip in terms of outcomes. Yes FPP was probably preferable. Obviously we could do better though. Too many disinterested sheeple and too many rotten vested interests not wanting to lift a finger.

      Maybe a third referendum would go along with that. If not we could wait a while and have a fourth. The last FPP election was about 25 years ago. So anyone under 45 or so has never known anything but MMP.
      
      MMP is pretty much proportional. That for me is the most important consideration. Every vote should count. Our current MMP pretty much does that – we could probably lose the 5% thing without the world collapsing round our ears.
      
      But basically if you want 50+% of the seats you should have 50+% of the popular vote. End of ….

      MMP is vastly preferable to FPP.
      
      MMP could use some tweaks ( lowering the thresholds mainly), but FPP is a 19th Century method of conducting elections.

    To be fair those days have been gone for a long time in all but the smaller towns in NZ.
    Councils are encouraging increasing density, some are doing it well, others are making a dog’s breakfast.
    I recently had occasion to visit a newish development in Hamilton. What a nightmare. Narrow streets flanked by tall skinny terraced townhouses with only one off street parkeach. Nowhere near the city centre so public transport will be useless. In a few years it’ll be a cesspit of no hopers, streets blocked with cars parked on the footpaths, houses falling down around the occupants’ ears.

  When I lived in Japan, they had real shoebox apartments – 2 rooms: a livingroom/bedroom with kitchenette; and a toilrt with shower.
  
  My initial impression was negative until I learned how incredibly cheap they were, the equivalent (adjusting loosely for spending power) of about $75 dollars a week.
  
  An excellent choice for single workers.

I checked out the curriculum for Early Childhood Centres (all 72 pages) to determine what our little tamariki have to contend with these days as they skip off to their kindies/ Play Kura.

There is a large emphasis on a bicultural approach.
Teachers are expected to be involved in the spiritual development of the children under their care.

The concepts of Tapu and mana are to be integrated into the education of the children.

And interestingly enough, the beliefs and concerns and desires of the parents/whanau are meant to be taken into account with how the education centre runs.

  Nothing new there Maggy. When my kids were at Playcentre 20 years ago we were supposed to abide by all sorts of weird tikanga. Not one Maori kid at the centre.
  In addition we were required to attend courses on the treaty. At one course we were told that there are 2 cultures in NZ, Maori and everything else.

    Playcentre was my education in how irrationally toxic groups of women, absent leavening influence of men, could be. The back-biting, malicious gossip campaigns and treachery I witnessed in the six months I was involved in our local branch was truly amazing – daytime soap opera level bullshit.
    
    In times since in discussing this with friends I’ve heard all sorts of stories of other organisations with high proportion of female workers (public sector particularly). They just love stirring up shit with each other, and requiring frequent interventions from ‘adults’
    
    I no longer believe that any organisation can survive without a significant proportion of men to tamp down the anti-social status-jockeying hen-pecking tendencies of women. The ‘Matriarchy’ is innately self-sabotaging.

        If the culture of the parents/whanau matters, I wonder how much effort is devoted to christianity? None would be my guess.
        
        All schools should be secular, unless a school is designated as having a special character giving them defined options.
        
        Secular should mean no teaching of Maori mythology, another form of pagan belief arising as a way of ‘explaining’ concepts or observations about which they have no understanding.

      Yes he did. But if he wants to change things, he will need to convince cabinet. At some stage in the distant past, cabinet must have approved these crazy rules about early childhood centres.
      
      They only people who must use these centres are people who work. As such they are effectively child minding centres. However they have been inflated into education centres by the teaching profession and the woke public servants.
      
      The only children who benefit from these centres are kids from dysfunctional families. If you can, my advice would be to keep your child well away from them. Make connections with like minded functional families and educate your little 🧒 children yourself.
      
      Of course if both parents need to work, that is impossible.

  The philosophy document of the kindy begins with a Maori metaphor and is peppered with Maori language and words like Whanau etc.

  At least we should have clear and simple self defense legislation .
  It is everyone’s right to defend themselves. The current law which requires defense proportional to the threat is preventing the victim from using overwhelming force because they will be prosecuted.
  Trying to gauge a proportional response is virtually impossible for most people as they are not experienced in conflict.
  That’s assuming they even try to defend themselves, other people, and their property . Many don’t.
  
  If bad guys come through your door they should know that there is a possibility that it will be the last thing they ever do.

    s48 of the Crimes Act (self defence and defence of others) is pretty clear. A proportionate response is one to cover the situation as the victim/ self defender believes it to be, not what some armchair thinks the situation is. Shooting an offender with a Glock is a proportionate response if you are about to be crowned with a baseball bat despite the views of so-called experts. Shooting a fleeing offender in the back or beating up an offender once sububed are well beyond a proportionate response and rightly so. Not sure how s48 can be improved in this regard. Unfortunately the cops and prosecutors try and push the boundary so the person using self defence has to hire an expensive lawyer to push back.
    Perhaps someone who has had to use self defence should say to the cops (on video if possible) ‘I feared for my life, guv’ then shut up (ie take the fifth as the Americans call it). This gives the prosecution a big headache if they want to prosecute.

I have been subjected to the latest green rip off scheme this week. Bought 4 tyres for a 15 year old tractor , about $1500 each. Was charged a $62 each fee for stewardship that was recorded against the number plate. The old ones incurred a disposal fee as scheme is newish . When it needs new tyres in 20 years time my bet is there will be no records of it in the scheme and I will need to pay disposal fees again. It feels like a $250 dollar tax with no benefits.

  In the next twenty years all existing fibreglass/carbon windmill blades will need to be replaced. They degrade to have health effects akin to asbestos, (or stone benchtops) so cannot be chipped or cut up into little pieces. They cannot be recycled because they cost a fortune to transport to the custom recycling facility.
  
  — There is no plan on where or how to bury these enormous items.
  — There is no bond paid by developers to pay for it (as required for gas/oil producers and regular farmers buying tyres).
  — There is every likelihood the windfarms will be abandoned after the subsidies run out. Or worse, “sold” to gullible local councils.

Relative applying for a government/council job. Application requires State your primary ethnicity.?!!!???!!

Choices include British, Eastern European, Irish, Pacifica, NZ Pakeha, Maori etc etc

And then there is a location for any secondary ethnicities to be written.

What is going on NZ. Why are we having to state our ethnicity? Thought this was a protected characteristic.

But also interesting that employers are using different racial categorisation than the govt.

In govt stats if you have one Maori ancestor you are Maori. But in the job ad you are forced to put what your “primary” race/ethnicity. But this job ad is more quantum blood theory with your most dominant ethnicity your ethnicity.

And if you are a white NZer you get called Pakeha. Despite living in NZ for generations we still are not an ethnicity in our own right. We are simply other.

But when Maori arrived from south east asia / pacific destinations how long before they were able to be called Maori and not called by the old country they came from.

After 8 plus generations and only one legal passport with NZ. Shouldn’t we be entitled to be called NZers. Not Pakeha. Not not Maori.

    In American sport where the expression ’shot-clock’ comes from there are actual countdown clocks on public display both at the playing arena and on TV
    Cricket’s the same for the referral system.
    Rugby’s problem is there’s supposed to be 5sec from when the ref sings out to clear the ball, which is often ignored
    So if there’s a physical shotclock for kicks there should be one for scrums, lineouts, use-the-ball and that’s not practical
    As for Damian McKenzie’s mannerisms; they all have something that’s irritating. Sure he missed a couple of difficult conversions last night & was timed out, but we won the game. Their bloke missed some much easier kicks that would have won England the game.

  Maybe if you knew anything about high performance sport and / or paid attention to any kicker at international level you would have noticed the importance of a repeatable process that ensures the right frame of mind to take the kick.
  
  To claim this is “camera-centric” would require evidence.

McKenzie is an experienced All Black, and there are no excuses for his milking the time for a penalty shot almost at full time.

I’ve had enough! I am 4th generation New Zealander, my kids are 5th, my grandchildren 6th. Our ancestry is English, Irish and Scots. We do not have an ounce of Maori blood in us. So why, oh why are we being forced into becoming pseudo Maori? I do not want to learn the language, I am not the least bit interested in their fables and taniwha or this newly discovered Matariki thing,(sorry the Greeks got there first). Over my life I have been forced to sit through endless rambling Maori speeches and ceremonies and all this “Aren’t we inclusive ” stuff and yet virtually every time a quick scan of the room will show not one person understands or cares what’s going on. There is always a lot of bored, eye rolling irritation as far as I can see. Yes, I am all for Maori maintaining their culture, just as I’m all for Indians, Polish, Croatians etc doing the same but for the love of God stop forcing it on me. You cannot turn non Maori into Maori but I have the feeling that’s what they are trying to do and I’m sick of it.

  To answer your question. Jacinda amended the Public Service Act to place heavy responsibility on the public service to promote the Treaty and a partnership. It goes further to require the promotion of te ao Maori, or the Maori world view, to everyone.
  
  I recommend that you Google the Act. You will get the picture in a 15 minute browse.
  
  Things would change if that Act were repealed and replaced with a new Act requiring a secular public service. Then pass the ACT Treaty Principles Bill.
  
  Put simply, if National does not act to change things, then nothing will change. Chris Luxon has no intention of acting as I suggest.

    Why would any younger, intelligent and aspirational person wish to stay in New Zealand under such adverse conditions….kow- towing to a neolithic, on the whole,backward looking culture…..being lectured to by people who in reality are mostly nincompoops ?

    If you are not a “maori”, are you therefore a “pakeha” ?
    If you are Asian, Inuit, Australian aborigine, South American native, Mongolian, African of many persuasions, are you therefore “pakeha” ? Because you are not “maori” ?
    Of course not. Maori were never aware of these other races until Europeans came on the scene and maori were able to travel the world and be made aware.
    No. Maori refer only to we white people as “pakeha”, in a descriminatory and offensive way.
    I will never consider myself a “pakeha”.
    And I will never acknowledge anywhere known as “Aotearoa”.

  The earlier settlers, ie Maori, lived a stone age, tribal, warring life. There was no nation, just disparate groups. I despair that rational beings think that a bunch of troughers who have an ancestor who came from that stock gives them special status.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT (Somewhat dated but still has relevance) Dear New Zealand Labourites, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Bolger, Marxists and Palmer, Mahuta, Ardern et al: We have stuck together since the late 1950’s for the sake of the kids, but the whole of that latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course. Our two ideological sides of New Zealand cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let’s just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way Here is a model separation agreement:
Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes. We don’t like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the NZCTU, the Fabian Society and every member of Jacinda’s List. Since you hate guns and war, we’ll take our firearms, the cops and the military. We’ll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar and biodiesel. You can keep the media left wingers and Hone Harawira. You are, however, responsible for finding an electric vehicle big enough to move all of them.
We’ll keep capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Foodstuffs and the Stock Exchange. You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, dole bludgers, homeless, homeboys, hippies, druggies etc. We’ll keep the budgie smuggling, bike riding volunteer firemen and lifesavers, greedy CEOs and rednecks. We’ll give you Maori TV and the Greens. You can make peace with Iran, Palestine and the Taliban and we’ll retain the right to stand up and fight when threatened. You can have the greenies and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we’ll help provide them security. We’ll keep our Judeo-Christian values. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, political correctness and Willie Jackson. You can also have the U.N. But we will no longer be paying the bill.
We’ll keep the 4WDs, utes and V8s. You can take every hybrid hatchback you can find. We’ll keep “A Dog Named Blue” and the non-Maori original version of our National Anthem. I’m sure you’ll be happy to keep in tune with Peter Garrett as he sings “Imagine”, “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”, “Kum Ba Ya”, “We Are The World” and his recent big solo hit, “Beds and Batts are Burning”.
We’ll practice trickle-down economics and you can continue to give trickle-up poverty your best shot. Since it so often offends you, we’ll keep our history, our name and our flag. Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like-minded conservative New Zealanders and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I’ll bet you answer which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.P.S.
