Some Maori bloke takes offence at Kupe being grouped with other explorers on a beer can. Fair enough, everyone’s entitled to their opinions.

What’s not clear is why his opinion is more important than anyone else’s, or why he gets his own media story.

I had to laugh at this point: “The way that Kupe has been portrayed on the image promotes colonial misinformation and [an idea of] racial superiority that Māori were either underfed or skinny. We do know that our Māori ancestors were quite large, muscular people – we had really good diets”.

Not really. Seafood, birds, fern roots and kumaras between them don’t provide a diet with much fat.

        800 year old chinese whisper ‘oral histories’ (40 generations) of Kupe are clearly mythic bullshit. Less reliable that similarly distant stories of the Illiad or the Old testament – that at least had the advantage of some culture of literacy to keep thing a little straighter.

        Don, you need to read Michael King’s tome; from memory, Kupe was created by NZ School Journal writers to add some sense of gravitas to Maori exploration. What’s more concerning is the description of the European explorers as “evil”. Would the Tikanga expert use “evil” to describe Te Rauparaha?

    What’s up with all this hate about Kupe not being a real person?
    If the Polynesians discovered and settled New Zealand, which they clearly did, then obviously there must have been a Polynesian who did it first. One expedition, maybe one man discovers the islands and returned home to tell his people what he had found. Those Polynesian voyages weren’t random they were planned.
    The stories of different people get conflated and exaggerated over time, but people tell true stories about important people and events. Believing it must be pure invention means that some where people were inventing and spreading stories they knew to be false, why would you do that?
    Similar things could be said about Moses, Noah and Ulyesses. Some of the details seem weird to us today, but ancient people saw the world differently.
    The forces of nature seemed like gods and magic.
    So, a tribal leader of the nomadic Hebrews going to the top of a mountain to think up some rules of conduct because everyone is going crazy does look like the 10 commandments written by the hand of God. It probably felt that way to him too, no fraud required.
    A Mesopotamian farmer, worried about the weather build a boat, gets his family and some livestock into it before the big storm, when the flood comes, they float out into the open ocean. Once he’s out of sight of land it really does look like the whole world is covered with water. All perfectly plausible, no magic required, and you don’t have to worry about how he fed 2 lions 2 tigers 2 kiwi birds and a bunch of snakes.
    That story even has written sources independent of the Hebrew bible.
    Similar story with the Trojan wars, the site of Troy has actually been found and there were plenty of sieges and wars during the bronze age, why not one that lasted for ten years with great champions and cunning tricks?
    It’s just the bits about talking gods and animals that seem weird to us, but people thought differently in the past.
    Dr. Julian Jayes wrote a very good book on this, “The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind” (1976). Jaynes developed the concept of the “bicameral mind,” a non-conscious mentality prevalent in early humans that relied on auditory hallucinations as commands from gods.
    So, Moses and Noah getting instructions from Yahweh or Achilles from Thetis or indeed Kupe chasing an octopus sea monster across the south Pacific is all very plausible, no magical gods or fraud required.
    The ancient ancestors were not stupid people.

      Obviously the story of Kupe and a fight with a sea monster is myth – but as Jake says, there had to be an initial discoverer of the country. He happened to be Kupe, who brought some men & women with him.
      The place where he returned to Hawaiki ( Raeatea) was the Hokianga – which means the place of return.

  Some random thoughts and observations.
  USA. Watching the Dem Governors last night was like watching a rerun of Weekend at Bernies. If the Dems stick with the Biden/Harris ticket not only will they lose the Presidential election the Senate and House but also State and local elections.
  
  UK. I suspect Labour voters will have buyers remorse. I also suspect that Farage will campaign t0 reform the electoral system as the name of his party suggests. On the last pre election polls Reform was on 20% enough to win 130 seats. Instead it will probably win a couple. Farage will show the voters how 5/6 million Reform votes only got a couple of seats compared to the low number of Labour/Tory votes needed.
  
  Australia. Senator Paymans resignation from Labor will IMHO lead to the formation of a Muslim Party initally campaigning for Palestine and then moving to campaign for more special rights for Muslinms in Australia. It will become the Oz Maori Party with all the problems.
  For political junkies this is a great time.

Shane Jones had a very informative chat with Sean Plunket yesterday about iwi consultation being included in the government’s new fast track legislation.

Jones makes the point that the government has statutory commitments to consult with iwi. These commitments were made by previous governments including right wing governments, notably the government of John Key and Chris Finlayson.

Jones asks, how much can they put aside those previous Treaty of Waitangi commitments? It’s a good question?

I think this government is doing great and we should support them more. They are lawfully obligated to consult with iwi.
However they are at least trying to get NZ more prosperous again with this new fast track legislation. The previous government wouldn’t know prosperity if they fell over it.

  Governments are sovereign. That former governments added consulting with tribes to legislation means nothing. Tribes have no more right to be consulted than the Residents Committee of my retirement village – or any less. Giving a tribe a legal right is racist. A principled government would call this out for what is is – appalling racism. We are all New Zealanders. Who our great x 10 grandmother was means nothing.

    I disagree. Regardless of the particular details of this or that tribal argument, giving tribes rights is not racist. Humans live in natural communities, those are tribes and they exist prior to any formal government. Governments exist for the protection of humans which also means human tribes. Humans do not exist from the protection of governments. To say that tribes should have no rights is the equivalent of saying that families should have no rights.
    And who your 10X grandmother was is important. It’s part of the basic reality of who you are, I won’t have any government try to abolish that or pretend that they can abolish that.

  Is this a gift that Sean has to get the best out of the person interviewed?
  Is this the effect of Sean gifting some lea-way to Shane that he does not afford others that he interviews?
  Is this just the “genius” of Shane?
  
  We know for sure that Shane is no genius, so I think it is a little bit of the last two, combined with a listener/viewer who is prepared to listen to Sean and Shane with an open mind.
  
  No mean feat!
  
  I often find that I get so pissed off with the interviewer or interviewee that I just shut down. Because, if I do not, I may go find my gun and blow my brains out!

    Clauses in nearly every single Act implemented or amended since the 1970’s.
    Every report that is developed by any policy adviser, manager and employee at Local Government or other public authorities have to deal with these issues!
    
    Annoying and soul destroying for the poor individual writing the report.

    Every person with any authority above that of the report writer will make a point of demanding changes to whatever the report writer recorded on these issues. A tick box exercise that seems to give relevance to people’s lives.
    
    Fact
    These clauses are clearly not fit for purpose as no two people can ever interpret them in the same way!
    
    Interest groups will continue fighting for the continuation of these clauses for obvious reasons.

      1975 is when it started to go wrong with the Waitangi Tribunal Act.
      The Tribunal worked with the rogue James Freeman version of the Treaty because it suited them. It contains things that are not in the original Maori version which was translated from the English original version written by James Busby, helped by William Hobson. It was translated to Maori by Henry Williams and his son Edward.
      The Treaty by James busby was given to Lawyer Henry Littlewood and is now known as the Littlewood Draft, the true English version.
      Here is how it happened. The first 15 minutes are the creation and signing.

    It is not about the Treaty. The commitments are in contracts with Iwi. These are then reflected in Acts of Parliament that underpin each Treaty settlement. No government is going to upend these.

      They do not need to repeal anything. The most recent legislation overrides any earlier laws that are inconsistent with it.
      
      Just pass a new law that says race or any other group membership based on ancestry must be ignored by courts in the resolution of any dispute, including interpretation of any law, regulation, or treaty.
      
      Previous commitments to consult iwi would still be valid, and that consultation should still happen, but there would not be any recourse to the courts if iwi were unhappy with the outcome.

        I think that you will find that Nigel’s comment holds true.
        New legislation (amendments) that provides a definition to rule out ambiguity does not require any laws to be repealed.
        
        In my experience Treaty Clause sections included in legislation are pretty vague. “Have regard to…..” comes to mind.

        then you have just abolished the family as a consideration in law. The family is a group membership based on ancestry. This sort of nonsense is a major problem in the modern world.
        All natural human connections are being stripped out, abolished and melted away to make us into economically efficient consumers. It is the government and business corporations that are fictitious social constructs, not families and not tribes (which are just extended families existing through time). Without them we are just fuel for the factories and meat for the sausage machine.

      You can start with local councils appointing maoris to the council table without a democratic process. Unelected councilors if you will.
      
      These unelected “iwi” have full voting rights in the council and have influence over spending ratepayer dollars, without any accountability.

Seems some health managers have not woken up that there is a new Government now. A female psychiatrist has quit because the Health Authority refused to provide a panic button in her room saying it did not meet the business case. Golly, if the Authority has an employee whose job it is to provide ‘business cases’ for trivial things, then surely that employee can be let go and replaced by a doctor, nurse or security guard.
H&S has already issued three improvement notices against that clinic, so they are obviously concerned about staff safety. Perhaps it will take another court incident (where a family court judge was attacked with a machete in her courtroom) or WINZ office incident (where a staff member was shot dead by an unhappy client) for meaningful action to be taken – unless the Minister gets in first and bangs heads together.

  I am reminded that up to the mid 1970’s, government departments had to seek State Services Commission approval to purchase a desk calculator – the Commission did not trust the Chief Executives to make the decisions. Then Intel produced its 4004 chip meaning calculators could be made for $20. So departments and the SSC wasted far more than $20 to do and approve the business cases. Then someone woke up to this and the rules were eased. But I still remember a big fight to get a HP65 multi function calculator costing perhaps $100 – these were an utter gift from heaven – no more log tables!
  Then in 1984 Rogernomics Ministers were having to sign off expenditure for all sorts of trivial things (like replacing equipment in prison boilerhouses). Cabinet increased the CEO financial delegations considerably).

    Back in about 1970 my parents built a new house. They bought a new bar that had the perfect place for our telephone except the cord was about a foot too short. So my father went to the post office, filled out a form and about six weeks later a guy turns up in a grey dustjacket and a cloth cap and gets out his clipboard and tape measure. Dad eventually gets a letter from the Postmaster general and has to go into the local post office and pay for the cable. About two months later, two guys in a van turn up and attach a 2 ft extension cable to the phone, followed up a couple of weeks later by another guy in a dustjacket checking the job.

So a keen couple has visited all 225 Four Square shops to celebrate Four Square’s 100th anniversary. I suspect that there used to be many more than 225 Four Square shops, but many have de-franchised or closed down over the years. Their owner-operators (among other reasons) could not meet increasing franchise fees and requirements despite access to goods at reasonable cost which is why Four Square was formed (prior to that grocery and other wholesalers took a big cut, were highly profitable and wielded considerable commercial power)..

      Correct, 4Sq is part of the Foodstuffs franchise group which includes New World, Pack and Save, 4 Square and Gilmores. Foodstuffs also have a very well defined process for becoming a franchisee, and as Colville says, there’s no way a Countdown owner would be accepted as a 4 Square owner since they (Progressive Foods) are in competition with FS.
      Yes, 4Sq is more expensive than Foodstuffs, but they were never there to compete with either FS or Countdown, they are there to compete with the independent Dairies. I’ve never done a price comparison as I only go to the Dairy for Milk and a 4Sq when there are no FS or CD supermarkets, but I suspect you will find the 4Sq is on average cheaper than the surrounding Dairies.

        I think Four Square has moved upwards from glorified dairies. Similarly Foodstuffs have downgraded some New World supermarkets to Four Square (eg Port Chalmers). Originally the franchisee would have owned or leased their own Four Square premises. It would seem that Foodstuffs own or have the head lease on many Four Square properties as they do with New World, etc. meaning they can exercise tighter control over the owner-operators. In the South Island some smaller Four Square shops seem to have downgraded to ‘On the Spot’, another Foodstuffs franchise.

    The best thing that the Government could do is to amend the Public Service Act to require the public service to be secular. That would prohibit the promotion of te ao Maori and its use in analysis and advice. Of course it would prohibit all mysticism.
    
    We would have our New Zealand version of the French Laïcité. This requires the French Government and all government institutions to be secular.
    
    This may sound boring, but such a new Public Service Act, enforced by a new Commissioner, could have profound results. It would probably require some high profile sackings for noncompliance. 😅

      I’d crowdfund an armed drone to follow people like this 24/7 after their release from so-called life sentences; and make the Parole Board responsible for watching the drone screen and hitting the trigger if needed for the rest of the life of the murderer. If the Parole Board don’t want that responsibility they can either deny parole, or go to jail themselves if the offender they freed, offends again.

      I have explained here why I went from publishing a book advocating a return to CP for our worst killers to being opposed to it. I am not going to bore readers by repeating those arguments again. Suffice it to say that re-introducing CP – which is simply never going to happen – would have precisely the opposite effect to what you intend

  The most scary part of the article is this:

  15 year is all he got for that (bumped up to 17).
  And that was then.

    They are obliged to attend a waiata each morning, after which, during class, they are instructed by teachers to supply answers to students sitting assessment tests and daily coursework .
    
    Failure to attend, or lack of willingness to participate in , the waiata is noted and frowned upon.
    
    Giving students the answers to tests that determine their academic competence is expected and encouraged.

The MSM and the Democrat Party are not going to get out of the hole they’ve dug for themselves by covering for Biden over the last five years, but it sure is funny watching them try.

First off, there are more leaks coming out of the online meeting held between Biden and the Democrat Governors several days ago. In other words the usual, slimy political process of “off the record” is in full swing. They want him gone before he kills them.

But now one of the media centre-pieces of the Democrat-MSM complex, New York Magazine, has come out with a report they claim they’ve been working on for months which has off-the-record quotes from friends and outer family circles about Biden’s condition. But the reporter herself gets in on the action:

He spoke very slowly and in a very soft voice. “And what’s your name?” he asked.

Woah there! Are you sure that wasn’t a “Cheap Fake” you encountered?

Where the fuck were all these assholes in 2023 – or better yet in 2019 and 2020? Even then it was obvious to everybody that Biden had slipped a long way and was slipping faster.

The answer was that they’d whipped themselves into such a hysterical state about the Orange Monster that they were willing to put a senile-dementia patient in charge of the nuclear codes.

I must re-watch Being There again. In the 1980’s it seemed too laughable to be real, but then again plenty of Lefties I knew saw it and winked about it had already happened: “Ronnie Raygun” I recall being one of the fave phrases.

The lone psychiatrist doing a three-specialist job in Kapiti has left and is telling how bad the shortage is, and how bad it’s going to get. The mental health system as a whole is running on four-fifths of the psychiatrists it needs, and with median-average age 55, it’s going to get worse.

Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey talks of immigrants as a help, but the word around is that NZ is now finding it hard to recruit overseas health specialists of all types.

Perhaps I am not suited to being a cop. I don’t care that he got burned. I had a good laugh at his expense. Pity he didn’t kill himself.

    Yes Steve and a long delay in releasing the pix when the attack was last Friday. BTW I think she weighs closer to 150kg. She looks disguised with a big face mask in one of the photos. Just watched the end of News First. Eric Young gave a very dignified and heartfelt farewell.
I have only fairly recently started to watch News First as ran out of patience with TV1 and 3 did not want to hear so called journalists opinions. At least News First was only 30mins. I seldom watch 1 or 3 but last night I happened to be checking on the programmes and found myself on the biggest load of crap I have ever seen on NZ TV. Its called 7 days and suppose to be funny. If you can keep crap like this going whilst shutting down News the channel does not deserve to survive.
