This one has been brewing for years. Wakefield Park is on the main drag between Island Bay and the City. Selfish cyclists turned down the opportunity to have the cycleway routed away from the road and park. In effect they’ve insisted (and Council acquiesced) on the removal of on-street parking that forms 90% of what’s available for visiting players.

Wakefield Park has two floodlit artificial turf and two grass fields. A community facility, in winter it’s overflowing with soccer players of all ages from all over the region from early morning to late at night. Adult teams, let alone those of kids or youth, from Wainuiomata or Upper Hutt or the Kapiti Coast can’t get there by public transport in any reasonable way; cars are the only option.

Note that adult soccer teams pay subs in excess of $5k pa. Much of that money goes to Council for ground fees.

So here we have cyclists, who pay the Council not a bean for pursuing their hobby on public land, riding roughshod over people who fork out heavily to pursue their hobby on public land.

Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

  It reminds me of Tauranga council and their stupid road changes along Maunganui Road… blocking right hand turns, forcing drivers to turn left and do a u-turn at the next roundabout, the narrowing of the road so that people can no longer parallel park without blocking rush hour traffic.
  
  Its the complete opposite to other countries who try to make traffic flow efficient.

Jones is making no excuses, we must use our natural resources to turbo charge the economy and build prosperity for all NZers. We can’t become a backwards looking Flintstones economy because of the Greens. That will just make us poorer.

I know some people want Chris Luxon to talk like this. But Shane Jones and Winston Peters are doing the rhetorical heavy lifting on race relations and envonmentalism. Luxon is the measured chairman of the board. And that’s exactly right, in the face of a hostile media and a woke electorate.

National and the coalition are doing great. They want to use mining for example to boost our economy. They are aiming to make us a prosperous first world nation. Not a tribal 3rd world hell hole. Which is where the previous govt was leading us.

And that’s why we need to support this government. Especially some inveterate detractors on this blog. You know who you are. 😎

  Scott – I get what you are saying, but I down-ticked you, purely on your last paragraph. Luxon represents a woke socialist version of National. Maybe that’s the reality of the state of NZ. But that does not mean we ALL have to support him without pushback.

        Richard, you have intentionally or unintentionally stumbled on to the fundamental point in play here.
        Who decides what is or is not ‘official’, and when do they do so?
        Does that decision rest with the President at the time?
        How is it that a President may decide what is or is not official and act accordingly, only to have his actions validated after the fact?
        Where there is no accountability, how does a leader get held to account?
        This is somewhat of a moot point though, in that the SCOTUS just wanted to defer the criminal trial until after the election, and hope that Trump is returned to power, where he exercise his presidential authority, declare all his acts ‘official’, and effectively grant himself retrospective immunity for everything that he’s done wrong.

    Clinton bombed a TV station because he didn’t like the news they were putting out. It’s easy to come up with examples of political acts that merit criminal prosecution. It’s not easy to come up with a rule that properly separates what should and should not be prosecuted, without putting every leader at risk of a politically motivated prosecution if the other side later gains power.

      That was a NATO led operation. Whilst the US was a major player in NATO at the time, there is a significantly larger back story to that than Clinton ‘didn’t like the news they were putting out.’
      
      There was considerable evidence that the building was being used for the broadcast of propaganda in support of the Serbians that were undertaking ethnic cleansing, and that the building was a part of the military communications network, which made it a valid military target. This has been confirmed by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

    The reason presidential immunity has never been before the courts before is that there has been no need. For centuries people have understood that you cant lodge criminal charges against a leader after they leave office. It’s why, for example, Bush (and Tony Blair) were never charged for lying about weapons of mass destruction to start a war. Obama wasn’t charged for Drone attacks that killed innocent people etc.
    
    The Dems and media, with their hatred of Trump threw all that out the window with their multiple impeachments and multiple criminal charges of Trump. The court was then forced to clarify, what should have always been obvious. It is sad that the court was forced to have to make the decision and sad the Dem appointees couldn’t find the integrity to join the majority.
    
    The claims around seal team six etc are stupid. There are checks and balances in the system that prevent Presidents assassinating political opponents. First and foremost would be seal team six refusing to follow orders and likely forcing impeachment.
    
    These are the same checks and balances that Dems themselves have tried to work around. First with Obama sicking the IRS on political opponents, with that eventually being stopped. Then with Biden using the government to manipulate social media sites.

      Do you believe that everything a President does while President can be classed as “core official acts”?
      
      Do you think that this Supreme Court decision clarified existing law on what constitutes “core official acts” which grant and always have granted immunity for the President?
      
      Even Amy Coney Barrett expressed frustration with how the court was sending the case back down for more proceedings to determine what constitutes “core official acts” for the President.
      
      It is almost as if the Supreme Court wanted to further delay any proceedings that involve potential Presidential immunity.

        The Supreme court makes constitutional decisions. It is up to other law makers to iron out what is and isn’t a official act. Generally it should be obvious.
        
        If someone challenges the lower courts rulings it goes back to the supreme court.
        
        Its not purposely delaying things, its how the law works in the US (and many other countries).

      A majority decision based on what majority?
      
      Lets look at the last 4 appointees to the SCOTUS.
      
      Neil Gorsuch was appointed after a filibuster when Senate Republicans refused to allow Barack Obama to fill a vacant space on the SCOTUS after the death of Justice Scalia in 2016. (Mitch McConnell claimed that Democrats could not appoint a SCOTUS justice in the lead up to a presidential election, but did the exact opposite in 2020, appointing Amy Coney Barrett one month before the 2020 election.)
      
      Brett Kavanagh, appointed by Trump in 2018, and the aforementioned Amy Coney Barrett in 2020, both appointed by a President who won the electoral college, but not the popular vote, which calls in to question their legitimacy.
      
      Ketanji Brown, the only one of the last 4 justices to be appointed by a sitting president with a popular majority.
      
      Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito are both compromised. Arguably either Gorsuch or Barrett should not be there, if a uniform application on the rules around appointments is applied.
      
      The SCOTUS is politically skewed, and no longer fit for purpose.

If you haven’t done this yet, I suggest that you do. It’s sad to see how far he has deteriorated. He should not be standing.

If any case epitomises how dreadful our justice/social welfare system is it is the report in today’s Herald by the Coroner on the murder of a 17 month old child in October 2015 in his bed at home at the hands of a violent criminal with a very long conviction history who was bailed to that address partly because the “OT” the Ministry of Children changed a negative report on the offender to enable the bail even though a previous report had said he was a threat.

  France is the EU’s poster child of how socialism and State control should operate. The problem is, once again, socialism is failing big time.
  
  Government spending to GDP exceeds 58%, the highest in the world. (NZ is 20.8%)
  
  Unions are exceedingly powerful. According to Bloomberg, a 50-employee company must create “three worker councils, introduce profit sharing, and submit restructuring plans to the councils if the company decides to fire workers for economic reasons”.
  
  France is a mess, economically stagnant, huge debt, and an aggressive population that is now totally reliant on State handouts. And, of course, they have rampant, out of control immigration.
  
  Their voters have the choice of more socialism + illegal immigration controls (Le Penn’s National Rally) – tagged the ‘Far Right Party’ vs all the others who are pretty much advocating extreme socialism (communism).
  
  Either way, France can not repay their massive debt, sack their millions of Govt workers, de-power their powerful Unions, and get back to balanced budgets.
  
  So once France goes the way of all other socialist States, what then happens to the EU?

    It is true that Luxon acts like a CEO. But if he was actually a CEO and sacrificed the long term health of the company to produce short term returns, the share price would tank and the shareholders would get him sacked.
    
    In a company the share price reflects the present value of expected future profits. I suppose that, for a country, the equivalent measure would be the average of the expected lifetime standard of living for everyone in NZ today. Maybe this could be calculated though it would need plenty of assumptions. Getting people to care about it would be another problem entirely.

What is the future for centrist and claytons right wing parties? Looks like the woke pro-immigration Conservatives will be smashed in the UK, while Macron’s centrists are being smashed in France.
Therefore, what is the future for the National party in New Zealand? “We’ll be better economic managers” isn’t a rallying cry that pulsates with conviction, it’s a pledge ti commit to milquetoast dilly dallying until the Left return to power. I’ve seen the arguments against doing anything truly significant: “the Left will just tear it all down when they get back” and “the ‘Overton Window’ has shifted”. The problem with both those arguments is it just hands the playing field over to the Left to continue incrementally shifting this country leftwards i.e. allow the Left to be the sole real change-makers and they will gladly occupy that space, pushing the ‘Overton Window’ Left as they do so.

  According to that transcript the items were placed in her various bags while she was alone in the changing rooms.
  The ‘associates’ therefore didn’t see what she was doing.
  On the third occasion the ‘associate’ brought two of the three items back to the shop. So they knew, but we’re not part of the deception.
  There’s no suggestion that any of these ‘associates’, I prefer the old fashioned term ‘friends’, knew that any thieving was going on otherwise they too would have been arrested, I would have thought.
  
  This whole wretched business reminds me of someone I used to work with who altered cheques signed by the big boss, put the money in their account and paid the bills with personal cheques.
  After it worked once it became an addiction until someone figured out the scam a year an a half later.
  An awful lot of money was involved, but no prison time was served and the spouse (aka ‘associate’ you might say) never knew, which baffled me because all the money was spent on tangibles not drugs or gambling.

Yesterday in the car I heard Damien O’connor on the radio talking about methane from cows. Now methane from cows is a legitimate subject for debate. If for no other reason that the Government has effectively pledged to pay for all of those emissions if farmers do not have to pay. That will mean billions less for health, education, and everything else that matters…

However Damien O’connor lost me when he claimed that we need to reduce cow emissions to avert storms in New Zealand. He cited as an example the storm in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne last week. 🤡

Of course such low pressure systems off the East Coast have been forming for millenia. Nothing we do to the cows will change things. 🐮

  After the dismissal of Melissa Lee as broadcasting minister because apparently she couldn’t twice bring a suitable proposal to cabinet, Luxon replaced her with Goldsmith.
  
  It seemed the problem was Lee had resiled from her strong talk not supporting Labour’s Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill for the reason that it was a rort of one sector by another. She was correct.
  
  It further seemed like Goldsmith was being brought in to knock things back into shape but not on your life. Now we have the disgusting spectacle of National picking up Labour’s original bill and Labour being more than happy to help National get it passed.
  
  I don’t know what the NZF position is on all this but I hardly think it is sympathetic to propping up the legacy media through taxing internet companies.

    The scam also sees the “cost” of the bin collection/recycling go onto one’s rates bill to the tune of over $300 pa , for many people that will represent in the order of a 10% increase just for that charge alone . Careful folk who manage their waste and recycling ( compost bin) wouldn’t be paying anything like that for rubbish.
    
    And that 10% increase will help compound more and more increases in future years .
    
    It might even force private rubbish collectors out of business .

  The fact is that this changes very little.
  It basically holds that if the President did something that is legal under their position as President, they can’t be charged for it when not in power.
  
  For example, dropping bombs extrajudicially on US citizens in a foreign country = no murder charge.
  
  It doesn’t mean he can drop bombs on US citizens in the US.
  
  It doesn’t mean he can overturn an election result. It does mean he can ask officials to look into the election result.

I think TV One programming is losing it. To have put on a four part series on The Rise and Fall of Boris Johnston on prime time may be of interest if just one succinct episode. To watch four hours in total over four weeks would find little interest for the majority of New Zealanders – it is, after all, about U.K. politics. Just goes to show TVNZ is scrapping the bottom of the barrel to fill up programming time. And of their breaks these days, mostly they are promotions of their own shows with little real advertising – which pays the dollars.

ACT stands alone in parliament in opposing the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill which will bailout failing legacy media companies.

Seymour said the Government’s amendments to the original Bill – which was drafted under the Labour Government – ‘made it worse’.

Indeed. National has actually made a bad bill even worse by allowing ministerial interference in who has to pay and who gets the money. At least Labour could claim the PIJF was disbursed at arm’s length but oh, no, says National, we’ll provide a mechanism for future governments to really get their hands dirty and all perfectly legal.

In addition, Goldsmith made additional braindead announcements:

Goldsmith said the Government would also “tweak” eligibility criteria for the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate for local shows “with strong industry and cultural value, like our longest-running drama Shortland Street”.

He said he had spoken to NZ On Air about the role it could play in supporting local news and current affairs.

Shortland Street, a “cultural value”? The woke and corrupt NZ On Air providing direct funding for news and current affairs shows?

But never mind, Willie Jackson thinks it’s a bloody great idea:

  A guy who in the 1st XV and a prefect the first year I was at St Bedes later entered the priesthood and around 25yrs ago was convicted of sexual offenses against young boys.
  The next year we had a priest who was a lovely chap, but all the boys knew he was a pedophile. He was moved here and there to different schools and everyone knew he molested the boys until his old age and was never brought to account.
  There were numerous examples in the Catholic school system. Those were two people I personally knew.
  I suppose in Texas they would be executed would they?

“Maybe I’m misremembering, but I could have sworn the new Government was elected on a platform of ending undemocratic, race-based ‘co-governance’ last year.

I’m emailing because I’ve just been briefed by the Taxpayers’ Union research team on what the new Government is doing with its “Fast-track Bill”. It is enough to make your blood boil.

In short, rather than delete ‘co-governance’ from the statute books, the new ‘fast-track’ consenting scheme proposes giving local iwi the same rights of representation on the most powerful committee as local councils.

It shuts the public out, while giving new legal rights to iwi (and only iwi) to have their say.

While it isn’t as explicit as David Parker or Nania Mahuta’s attempts under the last government for full co-governance, the Bill before Parliament hands over special powers to iwi leaders, all at the expense of democratic decision making and democratic accountability.

I wanted a change of Government last year, and I certainly don’t want to go back to the old one. But we have to blow the whistle on this one.”

It’s interesting to watch how the legacy media is trying to frame “far” right success in European elections. You’d think there was some kind of catastrophe unfolding in France right now. They shriek about how vital they are to democracy, yet seem unable to grasp its most fundamental concepts.
