At last this government and the police are cracking down on boy racers. Last night vehicles were impounded, people arrested and meetings disrupted.

This is great news and shows the difference between this govt and the last govt. The last govt allowed lawlessness to go on and boy racers had their meetings with impunity. Even here in Masterton I’ve heard many complaints of boy racers driving people mad.

I say again. Support this govt. They’ve got a lot on their plate but they are doing well, restoring law and order and making our country a better place.

  Here’s a suggestion re boy racers and ram raiders.
  Make a mandatory minimum sentence (say 1 year) for all ages but allow the judge to select from a range of options on how the time is spent.
  At the same time change home detention to a combination of Home Detention and Community Service. Eg pick up crim each day to work in food bank or paint sports clubs etc.
  
  For 12 year old ram raiders it means being picked up (if necessary, literally) and taken to school each day with a packed lunch.
  
  Options for young offenders (say under 25yrs) are premised on the belief the young crims can be rerouted to a useful life if separated from bad influences and given training and hope of a bright future.
  
  If this helps some crims that it is just a bonus. The real benefit to society is to get these crims off the street. Given that most offending is by a smallish group “known to the police” this will take most potential ram raiders and dairy thugs out of circulation, therefore vastly improving community safety.

    Don’t know. However I heard Nicole McKee on the radio with a hint of exasperation in her voice. She made an interesting comment, that the changes were made to ensure Labour didn’t repeal it when they were in government. Heather FPS quite properly responded said “so what if they do”.
    
    Then I recalled where I had heard that attitude before. It was here on this blog, not that long ago. Dr Wayne Mapp said he changed the 90 day employment bill so that to appease Labour.
    
    The rot is set in. Even Act is now so timid it doesn’t want to upset Labour!

  At the risk of receiving an “OK, boomer”, is it just me or is the language and syntax in that report a bit breathless? “Jacked” the car, “on the lam”, “slammed” the car into drive, and the strangest of all, the “unscrupulous” details of the events.
  It reads like a 5th form essay.
  Does no one proof read these reports?
  I fear standards of “journalism” will decline further before they improve.

    I reckon it’s ChatGPT – I recently received a citation for someone that was absolutely not written by a real person. It was full of superlatives and really flowery language, no-one I know around that person would write like that!
    Conversely, I also received a piece of writing from someone who in the past has not found writing easy but this was flawless.

If it was not such a serious issue watching the Democrats scratching around to excuse Joe’s abysmal performance in the debate would be hilarious. No teleprompter and he is a ‘dead man walking’.

In any other setting Trump would have been castigated for his lack of substance, exaggeration and puffery but he snuck through because everyone was shocked by poor ole Joe. The Dems are turning themselves inside out trying to figure out what to do while Jill maneuvers him around like a big toy running out of battery, desperate to hide his frailty.

    I thought that too, take a leaf out of Labour’s book with putting Jacinda up. But it was Winston that selected and made Labour win in the end. Different system in USA means there’s no third party to select whomever might be their Jacinda. Mind you, I gather there’s GOP members that will hold their nose and vote Trump.   Yes, it is a very curious story of how the Wairarapa Maori lost control of their lake….and latterly (1915) were given 30, 486 acres of land at Mangakino – Pouakani (in the Waikato) as compensation…..and how the Government took back much of that land when the Waikato hydro scheme came about.
  
  (I couldn’t believe it first time I heard about it).
  
  But Paul Goldsmith knows all about it….(read Chapter 5)

    And the Labour ministers knew at the time that things were not right but the Ministry of Works was very much a law unto itself at the time.
    In the 1980’s the then NZ Electricity Department went through old proclamations and compiled a terrier of land ‘taken for waterpower’ with compensation presumably paid for out of the electricity budget. The Ministry of Works was sitting on and utilising some of that land using it for purposes other than ‘waterpower’.

  I live in the Wairarapa and I don’t like this at all. I don’t like things given to iwi for them to control. We are one nation with one rule of law for all.
  
  I don’t want iwi running the show. That’s a recipe for the return of tribalism. Tribalism will turn us into a 3rd world hell hole.
  
  We have the spectacle of people who never took the land giving the land to people who never possessed the land.
  It’s time for reparations to end and the Waitangi tribunal to wind up their work.

      The holiday marks the date when they are just visible briefly on the horizon at dawn. Ironically this means the pleiades are really hard to see at Matariki. In the summer the pleiades are high in the sky for much of the night and it is much easier to see them then.

As with Mana o te Wai (agenda regarding the control of water) any Constitutional Transformation should first be purged of te Ao Maori (the religious world-view of Maori) – as Government doesn’t promote the tenants of Islam or now push Christianity, or proclaim that classrooms should display the Ten Commandments as is currently being instituted for some schools in USA, until that eventually will come before their Supreme Court.

Along with the principles of the right of the Government to actually govern the nation of New Zealand, protection of personal property, and the equality of rights and responsibilities of New Zealnders, ACT and David Seymour should establish that Government and all its agencies be secular, while religion is allowed among individuals or groups under the constraints of laws, which apply to everyone.

Its from these that it will select for NZ the mainly Muslims for our small national quota. That’s not where the people pressure is coming from. But overseas immigrants are from being a scarce resource. NZ can be very particular about who it accepts.
  
  A politician who’s taking notice is NZ First’s Shane Jones. For example, he’s pointed out the conflict between the hundred thousand (his number) of migrants to NZ, and indigenous demands within the country.
  
  We’re like a little company that’s unprofitable. It hires more sales people to lift revenue. They do, but they lift the annual loss more.

  There will be scientists who work there who despair at this rubbish. Of course saying anything will be career ending.
  
  There cannot be a better example of Mātauranga Māori having nothing helpful to tell us about a contemporary challenge. Maori had no idea what caused earthquakes. Neither did anyone for that matter until the theory of plate tectonics gained prominence in the early 20th century.
  
  Finally, there is not such thing as “Western Science”. Science is universal. It is what enables a Chinese engineer and a French engineer to collaborate on (say) designing and constructing a dam.

    When I was young we were told that Maori myths and legends served a purpose. The story of the formation of the wanganui river, for example, is a lesson in geography. Seen in this light, studying Maori myths about earthquakes might throw light on the history of movement of the alpine fault. Ignore the mumbo jumbo but study the myths as examples of oral history and geography.

      Almost all historic earthquakes can be dated by scientific methods not half-remembered and embellished stories.
      The wanganui region with all its mudstones was laid down in a shallow sea a million or so years ago, then uplifted by tectonics, with the drainage pattern imposed upon that. Does the Maori explanation cover that? Or is it a recently modified one which tries to bring in mystical mumbo-jumbo to standard geology and geography.

    GNS Science receives 88% of its funding from Govt or Govt entities. Rather than trying to expand commercial work, its focus is on “telling our stories”.
    
    That entails “weaving Matauranga Maori” into everything. There are a group of scientists – young and non-NZ nationals – happy to do this and in fact do so enthusiastically. The generally older (read mostly male) geologists will reluctantly swallow whatever dead rat is served up to them.
    
    This week to celebrate Matariki there were daily flax weaving classes so the staff could enhance their Maturanga Maori.

A question please, for those much better informed than I.

For months I’ve been reading and hearing that there was no way the Dems would agree to Biden debating Trump because he’d be shown up and the Dems wouldn’t allow that to happen.

Next thing I see that the debate was imminent.

Well it has now been held and, as predicted, Biden made an absolute hash of it and Trumpy looks ascendent.

My question therefore is, why did the Dems allow this to happen? Is there something going on behind the scenes? Is this a great ploy to replace Biden? Or did Biden back his chances and insist on a debate?

I just don’t get it.

Thoughts very welcome.

  The way I see it either they put Biden up knowing that he’d make a total hash of the debate which would ensure that he is forced to step aside for some anointed saviour, or they’re so clueless that they thought he’d spank Trump and emerge the triumphant statesman to lead the country for the next four years. This is what angers me the most – after all of this taxpayer money…Māori have never been worse off in New Zealand with poverty, prisons, crime, mental health, housing, domestic violence and benefit dependency…all because billions have been denied to them by trusted Māori leaders such as JT, Willie & Co. I know because at the grassroots level I help these Māori out daily without any government assistance.

It’s time for the whole House of Cards to be flattened, so we can start afresh, so Māori can finally receive the help they so desperately need.

  Brian Tamaki isn’t always on point with his theology. But when you meet many of his congregation you realise that they enjoy far richer lives for having been bought to Christ.
  
  He also was one of the only Church voices that stood up to Jacinda and the mandates. Then again standing up against the violent Trans-Marxists.
  
  All of the bible heroes have been flawed, just read about King David, Samson, or Noah. But God still worked through them.

I have no idea. However it is plausible that this was a deliberate set up, knowing that Biden would implode.

The most probable scenario now is that he will be persuaded to step down. His wife is the key. If she flips it is all over.

Based on what we can see, Biden is likely to slip into full blown dementia in the next five years. It is beyond credibility that he could serve another term. Those close to him know that.

      No need. Had a flyscreen on the front door years ago but now for a cooler breeze we have a heat pump/aircon.
      I used to get home after welding (covered with overalls) in 26 deg and walk into the lounge at a respectable 16 deg. Doors and windows are all closed.

      It’s a puzzle. Every house I lived in in Australia during the 8os had screens, I suspect not just for insects but for other creepy crawlies. An insect screened house in summer is a totally different environment.

  Maggie, we too have noticed fewer flies, even in summer. Some put it down to houses being sprayed with chemicals to keep spiders and such away, but perhaps wheelie bins take much of the food they once ate.

    You could be right. Nobody round here uses those silly little ‘food scrap bins’, but drive thru some less affluent suburbs, and you see them left lying out on the berms attracitng all sorts of vermin. Imagine what the flys will be like there during the summer 🙁

    We live rurally, and normally in late summer and autumn we suffer swarms of flies. The last couple of years have been pleasantly lacking in flies. I wonder if it’s because the summers have been wetter and cooler than usual?

    My little town in Southland has a bad problem with cluster flies, seems to be around March each year. They breed in the pastures or somesuch. They don’t tell you about that before you move here! If we go away for a few weeks, theyre covering the curtains and ceilings. I’m inured to most stuff but brave wife after our 3rd or 4th round of flyspray-and-vacuum is struggling.

I remember when

In it’s Editorial yesterday The Post discussed “Are the sentences fair?”
On the Golriz Ghahraman case it writes –
“Would those who continued to support her be as sympathetic or open-minded if someone from the so-called underclass had gone on a shoplifting spree?”

The problem seems to be that every time we shift the goalposts to make convictions ‘fairer’, it also seems to make the offending less serious.
Makes the offending seem to be less of a crime!

A friend who owns a boutique in Parnell was saying that thanks to the last 6 years of Ardern and her Labour cronies all bowing to the commie Unions, very worker in NZ is now entitled to 20 days paid holiday, 12 Stat days off on full pay, and a minimum of 10 days ‘sick leave’…. per annum. That’s more than a FULL MONTH off every year where the get paid for doing sfa. The highest in the OECD.

      Same with our small tradie firm Maggie, no employees. Just contract in as needed, mostly other small businesses, sole traders. Don’t perform, don’t get asked back.

      Maggie, Colville is actually reinforcing your original point. There are 5 week days in a standard work week, so 42 days of leave is 8.4 weeks off work. So if an employee takes all their sick leave then the poor old employer is only getting them at work for 84% of the year. The surprising thing to me are the number of people who take unpaid sick leave on top of their entitlement. This isn’t just a problem for the employer but all of the team that have to pick up the slackers work too.

  Good employees (of which we have 2) don’t use the sick leave unless they’re actually sick. The problem is with the bludgers who religiously use every sick day every year because they are “entitled” to them. The slackers even expect to have unused sick leave paid out when they resign!
  Our staff know that if they are genuinely unwell they can take the time they need, even if it takes longer than 10 days and they will be paid without using annual leave.

    Sick leave is never paid out when you leave, it’s not something that accumulates as a debt unlike annual leave. You can insist on Dr cert if sick more than X days. Depends how your employment contract is written.

    Yep, worked in a high school, teachers were terrors for using up all their sick leave whether sick or not. They have multiple more times holidays than anyone else and yet they still took all their entitled sick leave. I must stress that’s not all teachers, but plenty of them. They used to joke about taking “mental health” days, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, Entitled sods.

  In Thailand they hav 9 days AL and 30 days sick leave except one job I had I had neither and was paid by the hour.
  I contracted bronchitis, but didn’t take time off work because I wouldn’t get paid
  Pretty some a number of other people were crook and did take time off on full pay.

  Rugby is its own worst enemy. Super Rugby starts in February and by the time we’ve had the international window, the Rugby Championship (played between us, the Aussies and god knows who else this year) then the end of year tour the rugby season ends in November. TOO MUCH RUGBY!!!!
  We watch some of tests but that’s about it.
  And forget going to a game with very ordinary food and beverage offerings at preposterous prices!

Sorry gals! McKinsey diversity call flaky?

In 2015, a famous international consultant firm, McKinsey, claimed its research showed a link between profit and diversity – gender and race.

That’s now being challenged, and, two experts say, wrong.

The McKinsey claim has been used round the Western world as a reason for diversifying managements and company boards.

The investment giant, BlackRock, for example, in choosing where to put its $US9 trillion, looks for board diversities of 30 per cent. Some stock exchanges want, or at least aspire to, minimum diversity rules for listed companies.

Two American accounting academics have been checking the McKinsey tests and find no profit benefits from diversity.

In a summary of their result, Jeremiah Green and John R.M. Hand say:

” … our inability to quasi-replicate their results suggests that despite the imprimatur given to McKinsey’s studies, they should not be relied on to support the view that US publicly traded firms can expect to deliver improved financial performance if they increase the racial/ethnic diversity of their executives.

  I suggested much the same yesterday and someone called it “utter bollocks”.
  
  Personally I’m convinced that there has been a plan all along, and they need to keep Kamala out until the after the election, so it may be something like a broken leg or hip, so he can still act as President (if that’s what you call it), but still has to withdraw from the campaign for the next presidency. At which point they roll out their preferred candidate. (NB: IMHO Kamala was chosen as protection for Joe, as no-one would challenge him, because she would be worse)
  
  Why do it like this? Well this way there is no primary held, no debates, no whistlestop tours. It will just be someone selected by the elite, not the Democratic Party as a whole. No need to raising finance for a primary, and they get their person in the job.

Senator Fatima Payman has now been indefinitely suspended from the Australian Labor Party Caucus after being summoned to a meeting at The Lodge in Canberra by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The PM has taken

a harder line with Senator Payman as her previous one-week suspension has now been replaced with an indefinite suspension.

This comes after the Labor Senator said this morning that she would cross the floor again in support of a Palestinian statehood
