Heather du Plessis Allen was obviously not a nurse. She says “Regardless of whether the call was the right one, Nicola made the call. But then she made a mistake – she didn’t provide an alternative”. First sentence fine, but she got it wrong with the second sentence. Do you really expect a paramedic or nurse to develop a full treatment plan before applying a tourniquet when the patient is bleeding to death? Heather must be away with the ferries.

    Heather is actually correct. Facts will not matter when opponents pile the blame onto Willis. Heather is also correct that this government will come up with a plan to deal with this issue just as they made good on their cancer medicine promise.
    
    The fact that this government has been working on plans how best to deal with their responsibility to create better outcomes for New Zealanders and deliver on their promises should not stop any of us from critiquing their efforts. That is our responsibility.

    She would have retained provision in the Budget for new ferries but the money can only be used when Cabinet makes a decision on replacement ferries. Cabinet (or at least Cabinet Committee) approval would be required for any settlement Kiwirail negotiates with the supplier of the cancelled ferries. And a Treasury Report has to accompany any paper to Cabinet (or Committee) on such matters. Grant Robertson probably considered such reports to be decoration, Nicola and her Associate Finance Ministers will take them seriously (as far as I know Nicola or an Associate finance Minister will be on each Cabinet Committee). Generally if there is an adverse Treasury Report, your spending proposal is dead in the water.

  I travelled on BlueBridge over the weekend. At both ends they have a lump of concrete, which the stern ramp of the ferry lowers onto. Cars and trucks drive on and off. There is no $3B infrastructure supporting that operation. However, if government keeps dangling cash injections in front of KiwiRail/Interislander, then their competitors are disincentivised to maintain or invest, let alone start up any further services. For that reason, I think government should exit the ferry market – either leave it to KiwiRail to stand on their own feet, or direct KiwiRail to solve transporting rail vehicles only, and leave road vehicles to the private sector.

    Government SOEs, if they exist at all, should ONLY be there as the supplier of last resort when the private sector are unable to provide a service.
    
    Government SOEs should not spring into existence just because they feel they can.
    
    Any service that is state funded gets massive subsidies and this is massively anti-competitive. Even if the subsidies are not cash, the mere fact that a project is government backed reduces operating risk and is a huge subsidy.

      I do not have hard evidence nor do I need to. I am not a researcher writing a peer reviewed publication nor a PhD dissertation. I form a view on what I read and hear.
      The people who decide an election, are ordinary low profile people, not a noisy right wing group who peddle their wares on Kiwiblog etc.
      I feel the average Kiwi just wants a fair go, a reasonable society to live in, support to the less well off, kids being given the best advantage, If they perceive that a right wing government are not going to deliver these things they will vote Labour or worse still Green. I am sure Chris, Nicola and Bish are acutely aware of this and tailor their stance accordingly.

        I agree with you. And I’m unimpressed with the current government’s blunderbuss approach to public spending cuts. There should be targeted strikes against the unproductive or parasitic state entities like the HRC and the demographic ministries. But the previous government developed a Maaori ethnostate agenda that would have elevated Maaori rights well beyond the existing privileges. Was that giving everyone a fair go? There are plenty of underprivileged non-Maaori in this country, but they don’t seem to matter to the contemporary left, which is focused largely on identity rather than economics.         I for one am very attached to things like equality before the law (under attack from the activist push for consideration of a person’s “mana” in court cases), freedom of expression (practically dead in our universities, and in public discourse in general), and evidence-based decision-making (always under threat from ideologies of diverse kinds, both nominally “left” and “right”). Standing up for these things should not just be the preserve of “noisy right-wingers”. It’s easy to forget that equality before the law and freedom of speech were only hard-won by much blood, sweat and tears. I’m glad that a few “noisy right-wingers” are prepared to speak out against those who are undermining those hard-won rights. And a nominally centre-right party that failed to protect those rights would be past its use-by date.

    I am afraid you are correct. But when you see the sectors of society that the Left have locked up as supporters of the various strands of Leftism, then it becomes clear the scale of the problem. It seems that the young, women, Maori, Pacific Islanders, public servants, academics, and greenies are all firmly in the Leftist camp. Then you have Labour offering a perpetual lolly scramble to swinging voters, while the MSM demonise the Right and lionise the Left.     – White people are oppressors, and are morally inferior to people of other ethnicities.
    – Men oppress women, and are morally inferior to women.
    – Sexual minorities are oppressed (doesn’t matter how many laws are passed to protect them), and must be “celebrated”.
    – “Islamophobia” is heinous (and should probably be criminalized), but putting the boot into Christians and Christianity is quite OK.
    – Free speech is dangerous (which is of course true), and must be curtailed to protect the feelings of “vulnerable” demographics.
    
    Of course leftoids will gaslight you about the above – they will rarely acknowledge these tenets.

Regardless, where is the world famous aroha from whanau? I’m just a common pakeha, but I didn’t leave my parents to live in a caravan over winter.

  The Elders in the far north get the same pension as me. They live rurally or in small towns. They have family nearby, who, we are told, have strong values when it comes to looking after their elders.
  If I can manage a modest 5 acre lifestyle, keep warm, eat, and run an oldish vehicle on the OAP, why can’t they?

  Yes, the frightening reality is most of our institutions have been captured. And this has been going on for a long time – the Key government did nothing to oppose it, and of course it accelerated under the Ardern-Hipkins kakistocracy.
  
  But credit where it’s due – the removal of treaty clauses from multiple pieces of legislation is a very positive development, as is the restoration of referenda on Maaori wards.

    Incorrect. You are referring to the “Perceived Corruption” index. NZ usually has the lowest, or near the lowest, perceived corruption on the index.
    
    The key word that many people miss out is ‘Perceived’.
    
    All it means is that most people are not paying attention to, or completely ignoring the corruption that is taking place.

  I have long said that independent coffee growers, many of them Kenyan single plantation owners, are the ones to suffer whilst the large corporate growers have anyone undercutting their prices removed from the market under the guise of “ethical” coffee. I was a little surprised at some of the revelations yesterday in the defence submission by the lawyer for Golriz Ghahraman. She said that the “threats of rape and death were constant [during her time as an MP] and ongoing and credible”.

That is some claim. “Constant and credible” rape and death threats over many years against an MP surely would have resulted in police investigations and at least some arrests and charges? Why are we just hearing about this now?

Then there is the claim that she had PTSD from “her early life in war-torn Iran”.

As recently as December 2023, Golriz told Parliament of her memories as “a Middle Eastern child who lived under bombs at some point in my life”.

The problem is that she was born and grew up in Mashhad.

This does not sit well with me. This is not a picture of someone who is mentally traumatised by PTSD. She is well enough to jump on airplane to take up a position at a prestigious University. 😳

It is quite likely that some mental health crisis caused Golriz to flip out and steal things. However the accounts of what caused that mental health crisis cause me to be sceptical. If the causes do not stand up to close scrutiny, what is the extent of the crisis?

    Nobody is asking why the Police haven’t done their job. This kind of thing does my head in. An MP is receiving ‘constant’ death threats. Surely someone receiving constant death threats is in serious danger and should have a Police presence outside their house at night. Surely the imperative is to track down the unhinged offender/s before they can make good on their constant threats. We need an Inquiry into this business, but nobody in government says a word, they just allow this perception of incompetence to fester.

      This has been canvassed on Kiwiblog before, igm. A modicum of enquiry on your part would have revealed that not only has Golriz effectively renounced “her Muslim faith”, but so, too, did her parents many years before her.

      The only ‘death threats’ I’ve seen were screen shots from online chats where what seemed to be members of the public joked about “hanging her up as a chandelier” (maybe she was wearing something particularly colorful that day?) and similar. Not kind, but clearly closer to humorous banter than serious threats by people intending to act.
      
      There may also been other threats but the ‘evidence’ I’ve seen so far has been ridiculous.

    I’m not in the least surprised – I didn’t expect for a minute she would do the right thing and admit guilt and demand the same treatment as any other ordinary New Zealander.
    
    The only thing that surprises me is that a doco wasn’t quickly pulled together in recent months portraying her harrowing journey from childhood through to today and showing all the barriers and obstacles she has overcome as a ‘brown’ female refugee woman trying to make it in such a white supremacist, male-dominated, racist and unfair society.
    
    Of course, my view is that this woman has had the carpet rolled out for her here in NZ, accorded privilege after privilege on her way to a publicly-funded education many would give their right eye for and jetted into our Parliament at a very young age largely because of her background, not in spite of it – and yet she’s shat on all that with a compulsion to steal high value clothing from our shopkeepers, repeatedly.
    
    And why haven’t we heard from her that there are no other stealing episodes in her past and that these are her only ones? Is it because she knows there are others that still may come out?
    
    If this woman is discharged without conviction it will just be another example for me of one set of rules for some New Zealanders and different set for the rest.

        I think you’re being a bit harsh on Golriz here. Since 1996, many candidates have seemingly effortlessly swanned into parliament on their party’s list. For example, ACT NZ candidates Andrew Hoggard and Todd Stephenson did exactly that last October.
        
        And, just like those two gentlemen, Golriz had a full working life in the real world before deciding to enter politics.

  Benedict, my understanding is that Golriz Ghahraman as a child holidayed with an aunt who lived in the vicinity of the war, which if anything may question the wisdom of her parents or the intensity of the action but in accounts I have seen this may relate perhaps to more imagined memories than memories themselves, as was the whole trauma of ‘escaping’ to New Zealand, after a ‘holiday’ to Pacific islands, seemingly reduced to Immigration’s concern in what fruit they may have with them on entry to New Zealand, rather than their actual entry. Gloriz’ wonderment in a new free environment seems to be recounted without too much fear reflecting what she had been through in terms of possible PTSD.
  
  The ‘ “constant and credible” rape and death threats’ appear not to be balanced by any reduction on Ghahraman’s part in the statements or actions which would seem to provoke such threats, although in NYPD SVU terms that may be further victimising a victim – but we did not hear that much about those threats before any charge of shoplifting.

  This does not sit well with me, either. I would like to know a lot more about this “invitation”. Was it received prior to the start of Ms Ghahraman’s known offending in late-October last year? If not, when, and under what circumstances was it received? Did Ghahraman reach out to friends at University College to “help her out” in her time of need, i.e., did she solicit the invitation?
  
  Will the judge simply accept Ms Cresswell’s word that this invitation has been received, and is genuine, or will she seek proof that it is indeed kosher?

– Alec McKinney, a then-17-year-old transgender student opened fire at at a Denver-area charter school, killing one student, and wounding eight others.

Be interested to hear comments from the likes of Master Mariner on this subject. When I was at sea(many many years ago) when a vessel reached 24 years they faced a very extensive survey. Many owners sold off their vessels prior to this time. I believe the Cook Strait ferries were all built in the 1990s so long in the tooth today. Is the 24 year survey still the big one? Why did all governments leave replacement of the vessels so late ?

  Class surveys are carried out at 5 yearly intervals. These are complemented by annual and intermediate surveys. There’re also some specific requirements applying to RO-Pax ships, but no enhanced survey programme such as that applying to bulk carriers or tankers. There’re also some additional survey requirements for ships of 15 years of age or older but I don’t remeber whether or to what extent they apply to Ro-Pax vessels – the regulations are just too extensive and complex to remember such details.
  
  As for your question, why did all the governments etc.
  Why should the governments concern themselves with this? Kiwi Rail is a state owned enterprise and is supposed, under the State Owned Enterprises Act 1986 to operate as a successful business on commercial basis. Any capital expenditure should therefore come from the funds generated from or based on the income derived from the operations.
  
  As for the age of the Interislander fleet…
  That’s another story, no point in going into it at any great detail. But the age of their vessels, while making good headlines, should not be used as an excuse for their inferior performance.

Jacinta Ardern got such a rapturous reception when she announced something, she’d keep announcing the same thing over and over again and RNZ would keep on gushing and fawning along with Jessica and then Tova.
Now a new Government makes a huge announcement using enormous sums of taxpayer money to help sick people and RNZ presents it as a bad news story. Even their vox pops have people swearing never to vote National again (as if they ever did) because it’s much better to have a Labour govt and no boost to Pharmac funding. Every single story has been negative, critical and carping.
When the media wonder why we turn them off, this is one of the many reasons.

I’m pleased to see the government has caved to pressure and come up with the money to fund the cancer drugs they promised whilst in opposition
They also had to fund a number of other drugs of a higher priority on the Pharmac list to get to the ones they’d nominated
Unfortunately that’s not the end of matter. Funding is now required to employ the additional specialized medical staff to consult with the patients and administer the medication.
In the meantime some patients have been able to source the huge sums of money required to be treated privately and others die and will continue to die . . . .

  In Singapore, you get your own personal health account with health insurance, and you then get to choose between different providers (all certified) and treatments. Demand and supply prevails. Patient-centered decisions are made. And at an overall lower cost than NZ’s crappy health system.

Sentenced to 8 years in prison, but could be out any time soon due to ‘time served’.

  We have a shortage of police. We seriously need to put the recidivists away for longer in low operating cost prisons – ideally in islands that we support (with low cost labour available). They are hopeless cases.
  
  Lock away recidivists for long stretches and I bet crime in NZ would plummet, and police would be able to devote attention to more of the stuff they don’t currently get to.

I read this morning that some people plead guilty to crimes they didn’t do because a community sentence is preferable to being detained on remand until their case comes up.
In March this year 30% of the prison population was made up of accused remand prisoners. The average time on remand is around 85 days

  Remand and remand in custody are two different things iirc to be placed on remand in custody means that you have been a fuckwit and can’t be trusted.
  You can be granted remand with no conditions other than to turn up to your next court date and go about your life as normal.

    Here’s some advice for you.

  Where did you read that? It might be true very occasionally but, in general, it is likely not true.
  
  Some while ago I did a trawl through imprisonment statistics. The vast majority of remand prisoners were found guilty and their remand time counted as time served.
  
  I agree completely that the wheels of justice should turn much faster so that people spend much less time on remand, but you would find that it doesn’t materially change the prison muster. Instead of serving time on remand, the vast majority would end up serving time after sentencing instead.

Tried to go and dine at one of the Auckland airport hotels in the weekend. Tried to go into the D/E carpark nearby to the hotel. Got there to find that people were trying to back out from the entry barrier. The carpark was full but NO signage or anything.
So had to drive off back into town.

Just wondering this is all new parking. Is this an example of Auckland airport ceo, Carrie Hurujanignui’s work and competence? The whole Uber pick up area, some 6-7 minute walk, not under cover, where they have officers stationed all day long is another example of the cluster that is Auckland airport.

Just wondering was the appointment of Carrie Hurihanginui an example of a ‘diversity’ hire? How and why was she hired? Just asking.
If the logistics of finding a park or trying to get to the rideshare pick up are an example of her work I just wonder did she get hired based on her competency or some other factors? I’d say Freg Foran dodged a bullet with her going.

Anyway have decided I’ve seen enough and even though Auckland airport is a monopoly I’m not sticking around to find out how the build of that aia shopping centre under Huruhanginui goes and am selling up my AIA shares and putting them into something else🤪.

  No need for any special treatment. It will wear off naturally if you just give it a bit of time.
  After about six weeks people won’t notice it unless they are within a couple of metres of you.
  In the meantime just flaunt it as showing that you appreciate the finer things of life.
