Graham Adams: Rawiri Waititi’s gift to the coalition
The government is always going to win a showdown between order and anarchy.
Not every government is lucky enough to be gifted a parliamentary opponent who effortlessly makes its leaders look sagacious and principled. Someone who immediately makes them look competent and sane in comparison, and very much the adults in the room.

Labour, in over 70 hui nationwide, targeted (their word) Maori for input on “Co-governance”, and when that feedback was approved by Willie Jackson (who delayed the progress at a point when he was not happy with material) it was to be presented to Cabinet. But Jackson missed doing that, and with the Election due, it was all shoved on the back-burner for when their hopes of being re-elected would have likely seen the move resurrected.

That did not happen, so on what shelf does all that material still supposedly sit.

Why is it not relevant now that Constitutional Change is being discussed, again, by ‘te Iwi Maori’.

Where is any value of taxpayer funding that went into the Jackson consultations?
Where even is any ‘brief’ of what was even consulted on?

Some Maori, according to Willie Jackson, threaten war (presumably civil-war) over any attempt to change the Treaty of Waitangi, but apparently ‘Maori’ have been to hui, at least 252 of them between 2012 and 2015, with the aim of Constitutional Transformation – “constitutional transformation” rather than “constitutional change” they say – but what is “transformation” if it is not “change” – plus Willie’s belated “consultation”.

But regardless of that, and following on perhaps from what Graham Adams writes, as well as “Rawiri Waititi’s gift to the coalition”, some Maori have been working on “constitutional transformation”, while others or the some group threaten they will go to war (and what war does not involve violence of some kind) if David Seymour suggests a debate about any change.

    Is it really? How many people would feel safe walking alone anywhere? Just look at this site, NZ murder rate in 2019 is 2.6%, Australia is 0.89% just as a comparison. Not to mention ram raids, daily robberies etc in shopping malls. Hate to imagine what the figures are up to now in 2024.

      I would call bullshit on those figures.
      This is area (comparative crime rates for various crimes) that I have done a lot of work on over several decades. I have looked at various databases on the murder rate of the two countries. It is basically the same for both countries at 1.3 per 100,000, which was pretty much what I expected.
      New Zealand and Australia have broadly the same overall offending rates, though we have been drifting above Australia for a number of years. There is no way that New Zealand has triple the murder rate of Australia.

      I feel safe walking alone. Since I was a teenager I’ve gone for walks after midnight. I’ve never felt unsafe.
      
      I know people like to think things are bad here, but they aren’t as bad as some want to make out. I was in a car accident recently. Several cars stopped to look after us. The idiot that hit us wrote our car off. Police were amazing, looked after us, then drove us home. Neighbour’s have been amazing. There are some bad apples in the bunch but we can’t judge nz because of them

This is yet another example of a department (MBIE/Immigration) taking the micky out of its Minister and the elected Government. An infant born in NZ faces deportation for bullshit bureaucratic reasons. Once upon a time a person born in NZ was a NZ citizen by birth despite background circumstances. This led to an abuse where a woman would come to NZ on a visitor’s visa or the like so her child would be a NZ citizen. The Government of the day wanted to close that loophole so legislated the circumstances under which a child bore in NZ would be regarded as a NZ citizen. There was concern at the time that this could mean a child born in NZ could be ‘stateless’ and an assurance was given that the legislation would not operate to leave a child born in NZ ‘stateless’. Over the years Immigration has built up various processes around the law with bright lines deadlines etc to facilitate administration of that law.
In the current situation the child is not theoretically ‘stateless’ as it is possible for the child to claim citizenship and hence obtain a passport. If the child has such a passport Immigration will consider granting the child NZ residency. However in practice it is almost impossible for the child to obtain such a passport so the child is virtually ‘stateless’.
The problem arose because the parents were not ‘residents’ at the time the child was born but their residency came through five days later. Even if Immigration considers it cannot grant the child residency for its bureaucratic reasons it can always submit to the Immigration Minister to sign off on residency.
This is the sort of thing that can annoy the heck out of voters and lead to the Government losing an election. The Bolger/Shipley government lost the 1999 election to Helen Clark because of a whole series of stupid things like this.

  Yes Peterwn due to the slowness of the Russian passport office in not issuing a passport to this mum and child (so that Immigration can issue a visa to the child), I definitely intend to punish the government and vote for the Labour or Green party at the next election (sarc).
  
  Of course if your rant wasn’t enough to persuade me, just seeing the adorable photo of the child in the NZ Herald was enough to have me demanding Immigration should just grant a residence visa without delay (sarc, again).
  
  Do you honestly believe that this child will be deported, rather than just having to wait a while for the passport situation to sort itself out?

        A good, standard length for an amber teething necklace is 30 centimeters or approximately 12 inches. This fit isn’t too tight to cause discomfort, but also not too long where baby is more inclined to bite, play, or get tangled in it.

      In other words, immigration staff are on a ‘make work’ scheme to try and keep their jobs, hence taking the micky out of their Minister. A reasonable decision maker would recognise reality (that the child could not be deported) and get the matter sorted as expeditiously as possible instead of making the Responsible Minister (Hon Erica Stanford) look an idiot. And the decision maker should remember that ‘hell hath no fury as a woman’s scorn’.
      I remember my boss complaining about the Staff Clerk (before they were called HR). He would go to the Staff Clerk with a problem. The Staff Clerk proceeded to tell him all the ways the problem could not be solved but could not advise how the problem could be sorted.

        It also occurred to me that Immigration staff are ‘Gaslighting’ this family.They are there to serve the people especially citizens and residents, not the bureaucracy. ‘Gaslighting’ clients is just not on. It almost seems they are dishing out informal punishments to this unfortunate family.

        They are in the process of applying for a Russian passport through the mother. So again, just a matter of sitting tight before INZ can issue a visa. The slowness of the Russian authorities is hardly INZ fault.
        
        Immigration will probably issue a temporary visa into a Certificate of Identity in August when the current visa is due to expire if a passport has not been issued by then.
        
        I still don’t understand why you have gone on such an emotional rant on the topic, including now claiming that INZ are gaslighting the family as a form of punishment.
        Just an unfortunate circumstance that will ultimately be resolved.

Niue is a good case study for renewable energy. Perhaps they should switch off the diesel & rely on wind, solar and battery only. Being a Pacific island, I’m sure they’re worried about rising sea levels – for their low-lying neighbours if not for themselves.

Sick leave to be pro rated for part timers. Work part time / 50%, accrue 5 days being 50% of the standard 10 days for full timers. Couldn’t be fairer, eh? Not according to the usual hacks.

From the reporting to date, it’s not clear how it applies those, like teachers, who have unlimited sick leave. Work one day per week, get 20% of unlimited sick leave – not bad!

  The current law, as I udnerstand it, is ridiculously unfair on employers and fulltime employees.
  
  A person who works one day every two weeks (26 times a year) is entitled to 10 fully paid sick days. So they can theoretically only work 16 of their 26 days. If there worked once a month they could work only 2 of the 12 to take it to the extreme.
  
  Part time employees get the exact same # of days as someone working 5 (or 7) days a week. People much more likely to get sick on a work day.

    The sad reality is that many people who work these types of jobs or are employed in these types of jobs, often do not get to use their sick leave allocation.
    
    Example: Relieving teacher or similar job. (On call type jobs) …. If the worker is sick on a day that an employer needs a worker a sick that sick worker cannot in good conscience apply for the work on that day. If that worker does apply for the job and then call in 🤢.
    
    Sometimes shit happens. I do not think anyone can get this one right. Proportional favours businesses and fixed allocation favours some of the workers.
    
    Good employers and good workers will deal with this. Only problem is that good employers and good employees are not often matched if one tries to regulate it.
    
    Markets sorts this type of thing out but there will always be victims and those who are victims often choose victimhood.

  This is a good thing and it is not simply a case of good for the employer bad for the worker. All colleagues are adversely impacted by a worker with high absenteeism. It puts a strain on the whole team and drags down morale. Having good attendance at work is good for the employer and the majority of employees. The media aren’t recognising that with their reporting on this.
  
  I had a worker who worked part time 3 days per week. They used all their sick leave to look after sick children and didn’t share this responsibility with their more highly paid partner. They tried to gear their week to maximise public holidays paid as well. The end result of this is that they were absent a far higher percentage of their working days than the rest of the team. It impacted their performance and then they weren’t happy with no/low pay increases. Needless to say we didn’t look back when they left!

I’ve often thought the NZ approach to corruption is a variation on the three wise monkeys – see no corruption, hear no corruption, speak no corruption! We frequently top lists of least corrupt country but it’s pretty easy to say there is no corruption when the organisations tasked with finding it almost invariably completely ignore it or, at best, do the odd token investigation and conviction.

History has a moral arc (aka, the right and wrong side of history).

According to Jake Dee, I’m supposed to credit “Protestants” (specifically) Theodore Parker with coming up with it first.

Note: I never claimed Marx came up with it first.

However, since the cry of pedantry has come up, who came up with it first? Answer: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.

This webpage argues against this interpretation of Hegel: https://philosophynow.org/issues/129/Hegel_on_History but it nonetheless proves my point that a fair chunk of people who studied Hegel thought history has a purpose. I’m not going to enter into the debate on whether Lawrence Evans is right or wrong, but merely to point out how Hegel has been used.

I’ll mention again that Theodore Parker knew about Hegel: https://peirce.sitehost.iu.edu/writings/v2/w2/w2_12/v2_12x.htm

As such, there is no reason to attribute to Parker that he was original on “history having a moral arc” (i.e., independent of Hegel).

Onto Marx. Firstly, Marx was a young Hegelian who accepted Hegel’s Dialectic (Abstract, Negation through struggle becomes Concrete – usually termed Thesis plus Antithesis becomes Synthesis).

At the heart of Hegel’s dialectic is the spiral of history, so in of itself the dialectic also means a ‘moral arc’.

Secondly, paraphrasing Marx, Socialism would come from Capitalist societies (and Socialism would eventually wither away to Communism); that this was inevitable. In other words, history has a purpose – a moral arc. (That his prophesy was wrong does not undermine my argument).

  In my opinion, Hunter is being hung out to dry by daddy. After years of being given special treatment he is now being tried to prove that Trumps trial was the simple administration of the law. Biden said ‘no man is above the law’ and to prove it his son is going to go down.
  
  Doesn’t anyone think the timing is just a little too perfect? Hunters case will end, with guilty, just before Trumps sentence is given. Dems can say, ‘no one is above the law, see we prosecuted Joes son’. Its a great defence against claims of political lawfare.   1) We have written proof and witnesses of 10% for the ‘big guy’. Investigators have avoided asking who the ‘big guy’ is.
  2) We have text messages saying something like ‘unless you pay as agreed my father, who is sitting beside me, will hold a grudge’. The investigation team asked for cell data to confirm whether Hunter was at Bidens house at the time and was prevented from getting it by the DOJ.
  
  Im not saying that Joe was / is taking bribes BUT how can we know when the authorities have avoided looking into it. It certainly looks like there might be something there.

Seems a good grant, but before starting the research what are the stats for maori v non maori women getting a mammogram? The earlier that breast cancer is found the more curable it is.

And the government is already running awareness campaigns targeting Maori women around regular breast screen – ‘hook us up’ being a memorable bit of the ad (kids on bikes telling the women to get checked)

Seems 300k to find what we already probably know and have campaigns to fix: Maori women dont get mammograms – ergo breast cancer kills more of them…

What am I missing here?

    We have seen it clearly demonstrated in New York that fair hearings are not obtainable for a high profile Republican presidential candidate in partisan Democrat jurisdictions where DAs and Judges are elected by Democrats- which includes most large metropolitan areas in USA.
    
    One good suggestion was that there should be an option for political figures like Trump of being able to request a jury pool and judge from outside the unfavorably partisan jurisdiction. Perhaps the prosecution and defense should have to agree upon a judge.

I note Bryant has released a new book and Joe apparently has one copy in the Oval Office.       Back in the 80s I made a few trailers for 27 foot English RIBs for the SAS (sshhh). Rigid Inflatable Boats. Glass hull and pontoons.
      Anyway they were to be towed by Unimogs. Removable lights had to have the same tail lights as Unimogs. (soft rubber bulb mounts so the ‘globe’ bulbs did not blow as you crossed rocky mountains high. (no shit) Then the best bit. A plug for wiring at the front that was some silly NATO 12 pin plug. Then special tiedown rings that were to be welded to a galvanised trailer! This is Wellinton based desk NZ Army People. No fucking idea. The rings are cast steel, they can be galvanised without heat damage to the tensile strength.
      This was all to do with lashing down inside a C130 Hercules. NZ Army SAS boats to go overseas?
      Then there was the braking stuff. Had to import drum brakes that are cam operated with an air servo. Believe it – this shit goes into salt water ffs.
      This is all NZ pandering to NATO shit.
      Back to all of this top secret shit. The Unimogs have the female 12 point plug on the back to connect the lights with the Nato male plug.
      So WOF time and I need to test the lights (no spare Unimogs and I am not allowed to drive one ffs) Try to buy a female NATO pug. Took two months before the NZ Army would release one so I could make an adapter.
      These boats never left NZ, not even to the Pacific Islands – unless that was all top secret too. I used to see them tied up at the old Hobson wharf and ramp, from my living room!
      What a lovely rant. I feel better – and fuck you Defence people completely continuing to waste the Net Taxpayer dollar.

        Yup, having been in logistics it is absurd to see how militaries burn money.
        
        I was in logistics in South Africa. Although not part of NATO, it was somewhat NATO aligned (eg. using NATO standards for ammunition etc).
        
        As you note, where things really get expensive is:
        1) Having to be plug and play with other people’s toys. This really opens you up to being gouged by, especially, USA military suppliers. eg. want some anti-tank missiles? well you have to use something off the approved NATO list at $100k a pop.
        2) The requirement to have an expeditionary force that can deploy anywhere in the world via C130. That makes equipment extremely expensive vs stuff that is just intended for local use.
        
        From my limited understanding, the Swiss defence policy is one of the best and is also once of the cheapest.
        
        Swiss do not participate in other wars (ie. do not have expeditionary forces to attack others). They are limited to local defence and doing a bit of peacekeeping. They do that well and operate on a budget less than 1% of GDP.
        
        As any logistician will tell you, taking the war to the enemy is extremely expensive. That is why a non-expeditionary force is way, way cheaper.
        
        IMHO that is what we should aim for in NZ too.

Just read Alwyn Poole’s blog of yesterday ” Failure of NZ Schools”. Could not stop having a chuckle after reworking his stats. Took the top and bottom 10 schools and rounded off %s.
The top 10 schools had a UE pass rate of 91% of pupils whilst the bottom 10 had zero.
Then 73% of pupils in the top 10 schools went on to a degree course. Took out one very low scoring school as it screwed up the figures.
Whilst the bottom 10 schools had 3% of pupils go on to a degree course. What’s interesting is StJosephs for Māori girls. They have 89% of pupils passing UE but only 41% go onto a degree course. Why did I chuckle ?
73% of these top 10 school pupils are going off to Uni or similar establishments to be brainwashed indoctrinated by leftist and woke lecturers. Whom Kiwi Bloggers just love. Oh dear !!!

Is there a wait around the country, what does everyone else experience? Here when my gp requests an x-ray the hospital typically ringing up with an appointment before I get out to the car. I think the longest I’ve had to wait for an X-ray is 3 days. A ct scan a week.

The Government is putting $30 million towards free and timely access to radiology services including X-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds across New Zealand.

Health Minister Shane Reti made the announcement this morning during a visit to Waikanae Health Centre.

”At the moment, some New Zealanders are having to wait weeks or months to see a hospital specialist who then refers them to radiology services, where they may wait even longer,” Reti said.

    I live in what was Counties Manakau DHB, but have had a CT scan at Starship and some other radiology work at Greenlane, both of which were Auckland DHB. I also had a colonoscopy at a private clinic next to Elleslie Raceway
    A friend of mine who lives at Silverdale was in line for a colonoscopy, but the wait time was so long he forked out $2-3k to have it done quickly and put his mind at ease.
    I’ve had a few over the year. The man says, watch that monitor if you want, but the next things he’s telling me no problems come back in five years.
    Except last time when I remained aware of what was happening. It was like a nature documentary complete with disconcerting squishy noises.

  I have a problem with a shoulder that is not clearing up. Got an x-ray same day as requested but it showed nothing. To get a CT/MRI I need a specialist to have a look first, and here is the issue; 2 months and counting and still can’t get a specialist appointment. I am hearing similar problems from others trying to get an appointment with specialists concerning different health issues. Central Otago.

    NZ medical systems is hollowed out to extreme level due to mass exodus to high pay and better conditions in Australia. That’s an inevitable consequence from being a low productivity country as a result of several decades of anti-business, anti-mining, high-welfare and high-regulation govt.
    
    We are witnessing the high bill for the socialist policies preferred by a majority of female voters.
    
    The fix – radical downsizing of govt sector and slashing regulation as was done with such great effect in the 80’s will require a lot of bravery from the govt and will cause pain for a lot of voters. And so will never happen. NZ is destined to continue getting poorer relative to Oz and losing all it’s best and brightest to their better economy.

It’s as equally valid as the Michael parakowhai state house art piece we paid millions for. Except it’s not just rich artists riffing off the meaning of a real state house. The Tower of Otara has meaning as told by the artist, he’s painted it and got design elements like flags and the bicycle on top.

Can’t some corporate fund this artwork like the did the state house art? Can’t the uni tech send some student engineers and building students to put some steel scaffolding and cables through it to make it safer.

Much better to fund the securing of this art folly than the hateful poem the govt funded.

American electronics company Nvidia has passed Apple in share value, becoming the third company – after Microsoft and Apple – to reach a value of $US3 trillion. That is about $NZ4.8 trillion (4.8 million millions).

A decade ago or so or less, Nvidia was known as the maker of graphics cards for PCs, and its customers were computer builders, computer gamers, and home enthusiasts. Then it got a boost from the crypto-currency mining craze as graphics cards were adapted for cracking new currency.

But the great recent surge comes from its expertise and hardware for artificial intelligence. It has an estimated four-fifths of this market.

Tomorrow, American time, Nvidia will split its shares 10 for one. The pre-split price today, reports Yahoo, is $US1,224.40 (about $NZ1976). The share price has more than doubled this year, and the company has a bigger sharemarket value than Apple.

The company was founded by Taiwan-born American electronics engineer Jen-hsun Huang, who uses the Anglicised first name of Jensen. A year ago, Forbes ranked Huang as the world’s 14th richest person with wealth of more than $US100 billion.

  Their top of the line HB200 GPU costs about $3-5k to make and sells for $40k or more, for 2e16 calculations per seconds, roughly 10,000x higher than a fast desktop computer CPU. but the market lead they hold won’t last more than a couple of years as many big players look to get in on the action with cheaper offerings.

    This would prove without any doubt whether the excessive deaths are because of Covid or Because of Vaccines, Or a combination etc without any doubt.

According to this, $4bn to fix 62,000 potholes.

That’s around 15 pot holes per $1M. About $60k each!

We have 10,000 prisoners costing us $120k per year each. If each was to get off his lazy arse and fix 2 potholes per year then our prison system would, essentially, be “free” (ie. paid for by fixing pot holes).

Equally, if the unemployed were issued shovels (for “free”) we could afford to pay the minimum wage for 1.5 years per pothole they fix.

University studies? Free if you fix one pothole!

Perhaps we could get retire surgeons to do the job paying them $400 per hour. So long as they did one pothole per month we’d be winning.

These numbers really show how crazy things have become.

Not sure why countries seem to have this obsession with kids attending Uni. I freely admit as going out to work at 16 I have little time for Universities. Please correct me if I am wrong on this matter. When MBA started I thought they were for people who had great experience but lacked paper qualifications and a rounding of their management skills. I worked with a number of these people and they were great value. In the meantime I had gained professional qualifications in my line of work. Then MBA became the in thing. So students were getting MBA without work or life experience. It seemed to me that Uni’s saw this as a great money making exercise. I have come across many of these graduates and frankly would never employ them they were so entitled. We know how to manage your business etc etc. They got short shift. Management Consultants have them by the bucket load. Have I got this all wrong ?

With a further tester of Maorification of place names in Auckland, the question is who makes the final decision?

The Herald reports:

The New Zealand Geographic Board has opened consultations on proposals to “correct and restore” two Māori place names in Auckland.

The proposals call for the restoration of the original Māori name Te Tōangaroa to an area on Auckland CBD’s waterfront and correction in the spelling of Takanini to Takaanini.

The Geographic Board, which decides place names, comes ultimately under the Minister for Land Information, Chris Penk. He seems to have the final say. However, board recommendations or appointments seem to be the rule.

The Geographic Board site says the board consists of 10 members, then lists details for nine. Perhaps another appointment is ~~penking~~ pending.

Board membership as listed on the Net –

Chairman: Anselm Haanen, the Surveyor-General, and as you would expect a surveyor by profession – an Otago University-educated master’s degree level surveyor.

Robin Kearns, an Auckland professor of geography. The board description of Kearns includes: “He is a social and cultural geographer who is widely published on the links between health and places, and has influenced the development of the subdiscipline known as health geography”.

Paulette Tamati-Elliffe, nominated by the South Island’s Ngai Tahu tribe. The board lists her qualifaction as graduate of Te Panekiretanga o te Reo Maori – Institute of Excellence in Maori Language.

Merata Kawharu, a Maori described as a “part-time professor at the Centre for Sustainability at Otago University.” However, Kawharu has a Ph.D. in anthropology from Oxford University, and was awarded an MNZM for services to Maori education.

Jenni Vernon, a primary school teacher, and a Resource Management Act Hearings Commissioner. She chaired the Waikato Regional Council from 2004 to 2007.

Adam Greenland, the National Hydrographer. He has qualifications in hydrographic surveying and mapping, and is a former Merchant Navy deck officer.

Iaean Cranwell, the nominee of Local Government New Zealand. He has a B.Sc. in biology is described as current “co-chair” of Te Maruata, the national collective of Maori in governance roles in Local Government New Zealand. He has been Ngai Tahu councillor on Environment Canterbury.

Cadence Kaumoana, a nominee of the Minister for Maori Development. No information on her is provided on the Geographic Board web site, other than she was nominated to the board by the Minister for Maori Development. A web site shows she has a Ph.D. in education from Auckland University, and is a former chief executive of the Maniapoto Maori Trust Board.

Mahana Toka, similarly listed as “biography to be updated soon”. However, the Net shows he is half-owner of the Huntly company Niwha Ltd, which seems to be a business consultancy.

    English is extraordinarily dominant in the world. This is being enhanced by new artificial-intelligence tools. Services such as Google Translate use these with the the following strategy in translating between non-English languages:
    
    Language X into English then English into language Y.
    
    Maori into Indonesian, for example:
    
    Step 1: Maori into English.
    Step 2: English into Indonesian.
    
    If Maori were trying to survive against a lesser language than English it might have a chance of becoming this country’s dominant language.
