        A far far greater percentage of children biked to school in the boomer generation than today. In my day, there were no 4WD Suvs, or even cars, taking children to school, either primary school or secondary school.
        
        We didn’t need bike lanes as we observed the single file rule instead of annoying motorists.
        
        There are some bike lanes in Christchurch that require a year of use by school children to equal a days use in my day of the same section of road.
        
        And we coped.

      I loved my Hercules Atlantic bike which I got just before I turned 12 too and still have at age 78.
      
      I just did not expect bike lanes and precedence over motor vehicle traffic when I road it. Actually a tar sealed road to ride on was a bonus in the early days in rural Central Hawkes Bay.

        My dad gave me a bike when I went to Marist Intermediate because it was too far to walk
        I would have been 8-1/2yo and I took it to Wellington when I started work, but it was hopeless because it only had one gear.
        I bought a ten speed, but after Chch which was swarming with bikes Wellington was a desert in 1967.
        The bike got pinched a couple of times and after I moved to Ngaio in 1989 I bought a mountain bike that i still have
        I used to love jumping on the bike at the end of the day on a warm Wellington evening! The other days weren’t bad either. One soon warmed up and the Ngaio Gorge was preferable to one of these here gymnasiums to get the heat beat up.

I miss sitting up in bed on a public holiday with breakfast and the morning newspaper.

Breakfast remains as good as ever, but the paper is barely worth opening. Back in the day, sharing out the sections and catching up with the world was an enjoyable time.

Modern newspaper proprietors have a lot to answer for.

  Time was, NMTB, before I discovered those ‘car’ thingies!, that I used to catch the unit into Wellington ad back for work.
  
  ‘The Dominion’ in those days needed the half hour in question to fully read. And, hell, there was just one crossword and NO quiz to pad things out.
  
  Same with ‘The Evening Post’ on the way home.
  
  Now?
  
  Every page of ‘The Dominion Post’ is 40, 40 or 60% covered with ads and the world-class journalism that they keep bragging about is squeezed in between said ads.
  
  Small wonder that, catch a train these days, and there’s nary a newspaper in sight … with everyone getting their way-more-up-to-date news fix (or whatever) from their iPhones…

    Yes I remember the London Underground, packed like sardines no room to move but everybody had techniques for turning the pages of their morning newspaper. Sad to see that the now Woke Evening Standard is now only printed once a week.

Newtown & Berhampore are suffering under a new resident parking permit scheme. Key features include:

* a maximum of two permits per household
* It’s electronic, so you can be tracked
* Valid for one year; there’s no guarantee for future years
* $195 pa
* ATVs & quad bikes need not apply
* Vehicles must be registered to the address
* Houses with no off street parking get 50 free day vouchers for visitors, tradies etc (25 if you have off street parking). You can buy more at $18 ea.

This is a massive overreach by WCC.

* Who are they to say that households should only have two cars? Have they not heard of the boomerang effect, where adult kids move back home with Mum & Dad to save money? How about flats?
* The fees are the thin end of the wedge. Watch them jump in future years.
* Bad households will be threatened with reductions in day vouchers. If prowling cats & the wind scatter your neighbour’s rubbish across your street frontage, your parking credit score will be reduced. Think it won’t happen? You haven’t been paying attention.
* The policy favours those who bike everywhere, against those who like, want or need to drive. It will inevitably lead to a decrease in property values.

Some would argue that it’s necessary in Newtown, due to parking pressure around the hospital. Maybe there’s an argument there, (though if the hospital is the problem then perhaps Health NZ should build a parking building) but Berhampore is well away from the hospital. Now the same scheme is being proposed for Wadestown, on the other side of town.

Essentially, the Council are removing parking by adding cycleways, then dealing with the problems arising from fewer carparks by restricting residents in neighbouring streets and charging them for the privilege. It’s unconscionable.

  In its war on motorists the Auckland City Council no longer requires a certain amount of off-street parking for newly constructed housing. This is going to be fun when all new ICE vehicles are banned.

    I think you’re missing the point, mawm. I’m not the one advocating that sections of the road should be shut off for the permanent use by a very small minority of travellers.
    
    Rather, I’m advocating that everyone should be able to access all parts of the public highway on an equal basis. If cyclists want to park their bikes by the side of the road, they should go for it, I say.

        The hats are an interesting affectation aren’t they.
        
        I first saw people wearing hats like that in Bolivia and Peru. From what I’ve read the hats indicate where the wearer is from among other things.
        Interestingly the bowler hat was introduced to Peruvian women due to a mistake made in England when bowler hats became fashionable.
        
        So how does this relate to Rawiri and Debbie? I wonder if they see it as an “indigenous” thing and are appropriating it.

The Christchurch City Council has a policy that every new civic building will have a Maori name, no doubt ‘gifted’ by Ngai Tahu or local iwi. The problem I have with this fetish is that the gifted names remove any sense of place or function of the institution, preferring some metaphorical, aspirational, almost spiritual Maori alternative. Te Pae, Te Kaha, Turanga are all civic new builds in the city. More are in the process of being constructed.

Equally baffling is the removal of suburban names from schools, particularly in the city’s eastern suburbs. Gone are the names Aranui, Woolston, Linwood, New Brighton, to be replaced by schools called Haeta, Te Waka Unua, Te Aratai and Rawhiti. It appears to be a type of ‘cleansing’ process. Remove the stigma of the suburb’s name, give the school an aspirational, mystical – but to most people meaningless- alternative and magically utopia will be achieved. All quite baffling.

  Same thing is happening in Selwyn & Waimak.
  
  In Selwyn, the schools are all being slowly transitioned to Maori names first – started as English name, then English and Maori and it’ll only be a matter of time before the English names are no longer mentioned.
  
  Most ridiculous was the Selwyn Council refusing to add the English word Library, as overwhelmingly requested by the residents, to their sparkling new Library building. The reasons / excuses for not putting the word Library up beside the Maori name (not instead of the Maori name, beside it mind) ranged from preposterous to hilarious. My personal favourite was some batshit crazy councillor stating that because there was a coffee shop in the building, it clearly wasn’t a library.

    “Te Papa” in Wellington works. Why has it been embraced? I don’t know and that is not important.
    
    The name of the Christchurch Library has not worked. (I have forgotten it again.) Hence people in Christchurch refer to it as “the library”. Same with “the convention centre”.
    
    You can’t force people to use a language. Well you can, but it actually requires extreme force. Bursting out into Mandarin in the middle of an English language sentence will not cause the English speakers to resolve to learn Mandarin.
    
    While Maori is an official language, it remains (mostly) unknown to most people. The effect of RNZ presenters bursting into sudden Maori is no different had they done the same in Arabic. They are, literally, NOT trying to communicate with the audience. I could speculate on their motivation but it is not communication.

      I’m reading an Elizabeth George novel at the moment.
      Quite a bit of the action occurs in Lucca, Italy and the author drops in a word, phrase, sentence in Italian every few pages or so (no glossary or translation provided).
      
      I’m finding it incredibly disconcerting and for the first time, I’m not enjoying her writing.
      I’ve read about 10 of her novels and her non-fiction book on Writing and have always admired her writing style.
      
      But for a non-Italian reader, I think the technique of interposing Italian frequently into an English text is a real turn-off…. perhaps it’s not for multi-lingualists.

        Elizabeth George is my favourite current day author. If it’s the book I’m thinking of, and it’s some years since I read it, a London detective has visited Italy to help a friend. The detective is very unlikely to know any Italian – perhaps the use of Italian words is to demonstrate that the detective is excluded from some knowledge because she doesn’t understand the language. In that context maybe it doesn’t detract from the book when the reader also doesn’t understand the language, as we are in the same situation as the main character.
        
        I just don’t bother reading the bits I can’t understand, much like I do when reading anything written in New Zealand. If the writer wants to exclude me from being able to understand what they’ve written, then I don’t feel a need to read it.

      I think the name Te Papa has acceptance because it is concise and unique at the time of naming.
      I worked at a place in Auckland that had the name Te Papa. But the overlords at the time decided after about 10 years of being known as that , changed it’s name to Penrose. There was hell to pay by the workers, wanting to maintain the name, but to no avail. Still called Penrose Mill.

      Yes, my great grandmother ran a school at Ramarama south of Auckland in the 1860’s (I think) The local Maori sent there kids there most enthusiastically so their children could be fluent in the language, and learn the pakeha way – the three ‘R’s, basic economics, knitting, cooking etc.

    I moved to Wellington in 1967 and sold my last house there in 2013 and throughout that time Transmission Gully referred to some mythical road out of the capital bypassing the congested existing main highway that the Yanks were going to build during WWII clear through to Auckland
    Inasmuch as motorways are just a means of getting from A to B it’s just a section of SH1 and from my experience a pretty rough one at that.

      – New Zealand International relations
      
      – GDP growth and prosperity for the next 30 years
      
      – private costs
      
      – social costs
      
      – social benefits.

      The discussion document should assume zero contribution from agriculture. That is a pipe dream.

        I had a relative go through this as we were travelling together to the US.
        The Declaration asks, ‘have you ever had a Conviction?’
        Despite being Clean Slated he did get one- so had to declare it, and then explain.
        They understood and he got a Visa but on arrival promptly got finger printed and interviewed!
        He took ages to get through too.
        Better to err on the side of caution. If they catch you its out you go.
        And don’t be like another friend, who went there touring with a Band. They discovered his Conviction for Marijuana, detained him and then deported him two days later- leaving the Band without a lead guitarist…

        Strange but interesting, how DNA configuration can ignore or by-pass certain ancestry. Or perhaps it doesn’t and some European ancestry in this case was only nominal.
        I have done lots of genealogical research and things are not always what they appear to be. Perhaps matrilineality practiced by Jewish people is the only way to determine one’s ancestry?

    Promoting advantage for one racial group over another is racist. The simplistic minds behind many current activists seem to miss this one obvious yet essential point.
    
    You do not need to be of Maori descent to govern on their behalf. We have a good number of Pacific Islanders, and just as many people of Asian descent in New Zealand (~17%) as those claiming to be Maori, yet our governments appear to be perfectly able to manage their affairs, respectful and mindful of any issues relating to their cultures.
    
    What we need is talented and experienced leaders, not political science graduates or culture warriors, with little of no life experience, pushing their own barrow at the expense of others.

I started watching that doco on Sky News last night about anti Semitism in Australia but I couldn’t finish it as it was very depressing. i went to bed and read a book instead but I will finish it tonight.

It made me think that NZ is going to hell in a handcart. With all the climate change warriors, Palestinians warriors, Maori warriors, gender diversity warriors, anti-wealth and pro welfare warriors, anti-car warriors and so on, there’s not much that anyone thinks is right.

  I put this largely down to elements in our despicable media and social commentators who thrive on disharmony.
  Having said that, there are an awful lot of New Zealanders who don’t seem to be too bright and don’t put a lot of thought into their vote come election day. The 2020 result comes to mind.

  Good question. New Zealand seems to be creating a large cohort of young vapers who were never smokers.
  
  When “vaping” first became a thing, I thought “Oh cute little smoking cessation thingy”. I did not forsee vaping shops marching across the urban landscape enticing new addicts.
  
  I commented yesterday that I (barely) preferred the New Zealand approach over the Australian approach. I think that I am wavering in my conviction.

      I was just referring to the largest ethnic group in NZ (who also built and developed the country). Happy to also have Asian, Pacific Islanders and whatever the “other” (infinitesimal numbers) mouthful is. I just don’t accept being lumped into the generic “non-Maori” category. Why do we never hear the term “non European”? Especially given that Europeans are by far the largest group it would actually make more sense to divide people into European and non European (if you were going to do it that way).

Court rules that land can be taken for bypass: North Taranaki Midweek.
The final 11 ha of land needed to complete the Mt Messenger State Highway 3 bypass project can be compulsorily acquired through the Public Works Act, the Environmental Court has ruled.
The North Taranaki project was last budgeted to cost $280 million.
It is estimated there will be a $37 million increase because work on the land was unable to start during the 2023/24 Summer construction season.
Potential finish date mid 2028.
When funding for the bypass was announced in 2016 the budget was $90 million.

  My bank is committed to 40% women and 20% non-binary in Board and Executive positions. They also want to maintain at least 50% of women in their general workforce.
  
  I have two questions.
  1. Are non-binary people not desirable in the general workforce? Are they not good enough to be employed at lower level positions to get a foot in the door at this bank? Does this mean therefore that the non-binary appointments at higher level are merely tokenism?
  2. If women are to be 40% of Board and Executive, but 50% of the general workforce, is the bank saying that women should be kept in the lower positions?
  
  If I can bother, I might write to my bank and ask about this discrimination and marginalisation of the very people they say they want to support.

    Why is there typically (over last few decades) only zero or one woman in top one hundred chess players? Similar patterns exist in elite STEM fields, with small percentages of women at highest levels of achievement. 2.5% STEM nobel winners were women 100 years back, 3-4% now. It hasn’t changed significantly. Nor will it ever because that is a result of fundamental sex differences in human brains.
    
    Evolution gambles more on men because historically only ~40% of men have kids (occassionaly drops below 10%) vs 80% of women. So men they have far greater variance in intelligence, and ~10% bigger brains. Eg an average 3 year old boy has brain larger than average adult woman, and given physiological cost of feeding larger brains it is clearly there for some advantages it bestows in competing with other men.
    
    Net result is men will always be the dominating majority of highest talents and geniuses, as wells as majority of morons. Top 1% men clearly and demonstrably have far greater innate ability in some intellectual directions compared to top 1% women. That may include a significant element of choice and motivation in area of long term focused interest on things and achievement rather than people, nice social lives and relationship focus more prevalent in women, but it is obviously a real thing and to pretend otherwise is dishonest and irrational.
    
    So from chess and Nobels there are ballpark perhaps 10x as many men with talents and psychological attributes best suited for the most elite intellectual jobs. And in that case it is discriminatory, sexist, racist etc to a lot of highly talented men to have more than 10% women (or whatever the true number is in whichever field) in those roles. Anything that distorts that is wasting critical talent and sabotaging/sapping civilisational productivity and prosperity.
    
    DEI is toxic cancer.

      Males tend to the more extreme ends of the spectrum – there may be more male geniuses, but equally there are more male retards (if I can use that term) as well. Also, the top “chess player” types may be highly intelligent but they probably have limited social skills and are unlikely to possess the skill set for the majority of jobs in well paid sectors like finance. (To be clear I am in no way justifying DEI – as far as I’m concerned it’s communism).

A Rotorua iwi group fears legal action will limit its ability to peacefully protest a sewerage project it believes poses pollution risks to a sacred lake.
Rotorua Lakes Council has applied to the Rotorua District Court for an injunction to stop “interference” with construction of the $29 million Tarawera Wastewater Reticulation Scheme.
The council said work was paused in January after “protest obstruction, interference with the work site and safety concerns raised by the contractor”.
The Lake Rotokākahi Board of Control manages the iwi-owned lake, also known as Green Lake. It held a protest against the scheme in January but a leader says this was peaceful and no one in its group was responsible for the incident that stopped the works.

NZ mental-health mess continues …

Labour promised $2 billion (actually $1.9 billion) for mental hospitals, and the money disappeared.

Now psychiatrists accuse the Coalition Government of breaking promises on health training (link below).

This comes a couple of weeks after NZ’s first-evert Mental Health Minister, Matt Doocey, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Winston Peters, announced a $24 million boost for “Gumboot Friday.”

The Government says this will finance mental health counselling for 15,000 young New Zealanders a year.

Mike King, founder of Gumboot Friday, said the money would add 300 counsellors.

Good stuff, but will it help the jam-packed mental hospitals and their shortage of nurses and psychiatrists?

Matt Doocey’s the nephew of the former National Parliamentary speaker, David Carter. Doocey’s background includes study and work in counselling psychology, and this has led him into the controversial area of trans rights and politics (second link below).

  Doocey’s stance on trans and his background at the Tavistock Clinic is deeply disturbing. Not a word from him on the Cass Report and NZ’s ongoing use of puberty blockers in children. The man is a charlatan and I can’t see that he’s one to fix mental health in NZ anytime soon.

He Whenua Taurikura was the National Centre of Research Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism. That research institute has had funding cut by $825,000 per year, delivering $3.3m to the Government across the four-year forecast period. In its first year of operation, it received $1.4 miilion in funding, for no discernible outcome. Its head is Prof. Joanna Kidman. You may recall her describing the Government as a “death cult” that “hates children” after the proposal to introduce boot camps. She attacked Trelise Cooper over a dress. It’s just a shame that all the funding hasn’t been removed. along with its head.
