Happy Banana Republic Day! You too can “Save our democracy” by applying “the rule of law” to prepare to jail your chief political rival. All you have to do is cook up charges that no one understands (least of all the jury), and hide the charges inside layers of an onion which has nothing in the centre. Best of all, the charges should relate to a book-keeping misdemeanour occurring around the 2016 election, the result of which you continue to deny.

    As it happens, one of the NY representatives who voted for the bill got accused of sexual harassment from years ago. His defence is that the law he voted for is “unconstitutional”.

  We live in strange times. When activists and minorities are free to constantly try to tear down the society that the majority are content to live in. Often they are funded by our money and enabled by foreign entities eg the UN. While this is not a new phenomenon, in pre-Alexandrian Greece there were similar factions being bribed by Xerxes to support Persian expansionism, it is unusual that the masses are so tolerant of it. I am happy for TPM to ratchet up their rhetoric because out in the open, eventually it will create a reaction. At some point the agitators and their globalist supporters will invoke a response that they might not be expecting.
  
  The sad thing about NZ today is that no longer are these minority activist factions having to work in the fringes of society. No, today, we have given them the keys to our institutions and watch powerlessly as they swing their hammers of destruction from within the walls. The affirmation for MPs is..

“I, …, solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, His heirs and successors, according to law.”

Surely declaring that you will set up a rival parliament breaks this affirmation? If it does not, what would?

If the Speaker ignores this action, it makes the affirmation meaningless.

It would be helpful to hear some opinions of a constitutional lawyer. If there are any sane ones. 🙁

  Sure, some people would even argue that the affirmation would make it impossible for an MP to advocate for the abolition of the monarchy.
  The establishment of a rival ‘parliament’ is best treated as having no practical or legal effect. Treating it as an act of rebellion or treason, etc would bbe welcomed by TPM, etc. Many would welcome the chance to become political prisoners.

    Well, I did teach constitutional law some 35 years ago.
    
    There is nothing for the speaker to do here. Merely advocating for a Maori Parliament is not a breach of any laws or for that matter the oath.
    
    New Zealanders, including Parliamentarians, can advocate for all kinds of different political systems. Covered by the laws of free speech.
    
    The analogy would be the SNP. They take their seats in the Westminster parliament even though their goal is to remove themselves (or more specifically Scotland) from the very same parliament.
    
    But I am sure you actually know all this
    
    There are specific things that will disbar a Member of Parliament. Basically being convicted of a crime with a term of imprisonment of 2 years or more.

  To me, he has broken his oath/affirmation. It should be plain and simple that he no longer qualifies to be in Parliament.
  
  I agree that the Speaker must take action otherwise oaths and affirmations are meaningless. This undermines the whole justice system. This affirmation is exactly the same one that Judges and Justices of the Peace make on their appointment/swearing in.
  
  Parliament is the highest court in the land. If this affirmation is not upheld, it undermines our whole justice system.

    If you go searching on the NIH, and various cancer sites you will find numerous research articles citing parasite infections as the leading cause of cancer, something that was known several decades ago, but suppressed.
    
    Why fund cancer drugs when multiple rounds of cheap anti-parasitical compounds such as Ivermectin will knock the bulk of the cancer cases into remission?

And if there is widespread and credible literature to that effect why are anthelmintics not widely and routinely prescribed as a preventive measure?

        Type into your search engine ‘cancer caused by parasites’ or ‘cancer caused by parasites nih’. there are hundreds of websites, and many mainstream sites.
        
        The knowledge that infections can lead to cancer was starting to be acknowledged 25 years ago. It is not unusual for someone to get throat cancer from a dormant herpes infection 30 years earlier.
        
        Parasites are also heavily linked to seizures, epilepsy, and also MS and nerve damage.
        
        The knowledge that parasites cause cancer dates back 30+ years.

      The last government used the ETS money for stupid grants to companies to do things like install electric boilers to replace coal. Thankfully abolished.

  The failure to fund the cancer drugs is either a disgrace, or an act of political idiocy, or perhaps both. The funding of these drugs was *promised.* To see people defending the broken promise along the lines of ‘politicians lie, get over it’ and ‘you can’t fund everything’…you’d think we’d be better than that, and more astute. The way this is being framed is ‘heartless National taking care of their rich mates while duped cancer patients are left to die’. And if you deliver on your *promise* to landlords while giving the middle finger to people dying of cancer, it’s a bad look to most people. This could have been pitched as ‘the budget of caring’, repudiating any Labour and MSM claims to contrary: “we delivered for the ‘squeezed middle’ while funding 18 new cancer drugs’. Coming around the same time as the Tiwai Point deal the message would be ‘we care about people, their jobs and their health’. Now you have dying cancer patients crying in the media, Barbara Edmonds crying in empathy on TV, and the Coalition framed as deeply callous and cruel. It doesn’t help that Luxon was answering questions about it with a smile on his face saying “we had to make tough choices”. Auckland rail gets an over $200 million handout to help it sort out problems of its own making (no heads rolling at KiwiRail still) & ‘Te Matatini receives $48.7 million over three years. This initiative will support Te Matatini to continue to deliver kapa haka to New Zealanders.’ Tough choices indeed. ‘Kapa haka’ over cancer patients folks. And there will be umpteen other areas where money could have been ‘reprioritised’ from a ‘nice to have’ to keeping dying people alive or curing them. I think we’ve seen some monumental political stupidity displayed, cold corporate management over political acumen and basic decency. Stephen Joyce calls the decision ‘inexplicable’. Many, many people will be stunned.

  Every taxpayer dollar the govt. spends on trying to fix the climate is a dollar that could have been spent on something useful instead. We cannot ‘fix’ the climate. Jesus, after a century of burning FF as fast as we can, IPCC can barely detect any human influence on the climate in the first place, let alone convince many of us that any alleged change is necessarily something that needs fixing.
  
  I wonder why the govt. thinks it needs to be in the EV charging station business. It’s not like EVs serve some massive good to the country and we all benefit from having charging stations strewn around the place, is it?
  Also, wouldn’t they (and we) be better off doing something to sort our creaking electricity system out first? We’d all be much better off if we had a grid that supplied us with cheap, abundant, electricity. Then we might have some lectrickery available for the charging stations to use.

      Professor Dershowitz is an academic and expert in criminal defense appeals, with a primary interest in rigorously upholding standards of judicial process/rule of law in context of US constitution. He’s an honest broker focussed on ethics before poltics, though he’s been a life-long Democrat (sounds like he is reevaluating that now in collapse of rule of law under Biden admin).
      
      He has a policy of only defending anyone once, and has defended Trump at impeachment in senate so won’t be representing him again. As a criminal defense lawyer he naturally rubs up alongside scumbags.

      That’s the real acid of this prosecution, it has burned centuries of at least the pretense of rational and unbiased even-handed criminal justice in USA for sugar-rush of nailing a political opponent on Trumped up charges in a hyper-partisan jurisdiction. The flood gates will open on lawfare, destroying functional democracy with polarisation, and creating a constitutional crisis. Damage to US could be catastrophic.
      
      I am sure the grandees of both Democrats and Republicans see this, and hope they will find common cause in working to de-escalate it somehow.
      
      Likely the Supreme Court will need to step in with some ruling to prevent this sort of excess recurring, perhaps some rule about not allowing prosecution of political figures in jurisdictions with public political sympathies significantly worse than average for defendant.

The Employment Court orders TVNZ to comply with collective agreement clause. A win for the union and probably also a payout for impacted staff who lodge a personal grievance. TVNZ will obviously follow the court’s decision on process to the absolute letter, then follow the exact same process for the next round of layoffs.

More money going out, more costs must be saved.

      I wonder if that’s because they value ideology above all else? I suspect that there may be candidates for the parliamentary wing of the party who would make outstanding leaders, but who refuse to drink the KoolAid and so never get past the first selection hurdle. I also suspect that there is a large number of potential MPs for all parties who could make positive and progressive contributions to this country but who refuse to play the petty games required of them. Te Reo is one of our National languages, but for some odd reason it is not for mono-lingualists like me to know what has been said in Parliament in Te Reo in recent weeks.

If anyone can find an authorised translation of the Te Reo spoken by our MPs since Tuesday May 7th, I’d be interested in viewing it.

      They have probably had to make staff cuts too. It would not be worth keeping a Maori language sterno on hand all of the time so the next best is for a Maori language sterno to transcribe it from a recording. A saving grace is the audio-visuals are available for anyone to replay.

  The only reason it is “one of our national languages” is because campaigners agitated for it to be made “official” and the government of the day caved. It’s nothing to with anyone actually speaking it. Proper national languages have millions of native speakers.

  NZ has two official (not national) languages; Maori & sign
  About 4% of the population is fluent in Maori and 0.5% sign
  English is a de facto official language
  Basically that means Maori or sign can be used in parliament or similar, but not mandarin for example without an interpreter, as I understand
  It’s interesting that sign is used at press conferences etc but there’s only very few viewers likely to need the facility, but nobody suggests it’s a waste of taxpayer money

    No comparison – this 4% who supposedly speak Maori do so as a second language. They’re all native English speakers. But actually, re sign language, I do suggest it’s rather unnecessary (although not as pointless as Maori for which there is no need whatsoever). I also think it looks very stupid with the facials. What’s wrong with subtitles – works for the BBC so should be fine for NZ.

      I’ve met many Thai people who I wouldn’t consider particularly fluent in English, but know enough that I can conduct a conversation and I’m sure that applies to all sorts of people with some knowledge of a second, third or multiple languages including Māori.

And with the final speech of the hui, Kiingi Tuheitia revealed his own thoughts about a Māori Parliament.
“Actually it frightens me,” he told the crowd.
This was the third Hui ā-Motu (National Hui) of its kind this year, and before it ended, Kiingi Tuheitia said there will be a fourth hosted by Ngāi Tahu in the South Island.
Once that’s complete, they’ll take something to the Government.

David Exel, Joe Cotē, Simon Walker or Brian Edwards would have asked the King “Why? Why does it frighten you?”
No one has been reported as asking Kiingi Tuheitia anything

Something completely different but appropriate as it’s the King’s Birthday weekend. Always enjoyed Mark Feltons videos about WW11 his research is amazing. Just watched his “The Kings WW2 Secret-Did George V1 abuse his Power” You can feel Marks anger throughout the video and I joined him. Always regarded the Royal Family as a bunch of Germans foisted on Britain by a quirk of religious bigotry. It seems that George like his Nazi loving brother could not remove himself from his German roots. I wonder what those old soldiers remembering D Day would think of this, and my Dad who was part of the special forces who were the first to enter Bergen-Belsen. Recommend you watch the video.

  The Nazi Blitz bombed his home in London allowing the Royals to be able to personally identify with their suffering subjects.
  
  One man’s religious “bigotry” is another man’s political freedom. By having a Protestant royal family under the control of parliament, Britain escaped the worst of French absolutism , the resulting terror and wars of the revolution and political instability that has dogged France since.
  
  While Felton’s videos ( and books) are excellent always remember he needs an audience and the more controversial one is , the better .

The US Supreme Court has revived a National Rifle Association law suit alleging a New York regulator unlawfully attempted to blacklist the organisation.

The Wall Street Journal reports Justice Sonia Sotomayor, for a unanimous court, said a former state official may have violated America’s constitutional First Amendment by urging banks and insurers to cut ties with the gun-rights group.

This reverses a Federal Appeals Court finding.

The NRA’s complaint, filed six years ago, alleged Maria Vullo, then superintendent of the New York Department of Financial Services, coerced companies to cut business with the group.

After a school shooting in 2018, Vullo told the insurer Lloyds of London that it wanted Lloyds to “dissociate” from all gun groups.

The NRA alleged banks once keen to do business with it became frightened to provide it with basic services.

The American Civil Liberties Union represented the NRA, saying First Amendment principles were at stake.

Young woman dies of an asthma attack in 2020 because an ambulance arrives 20 minutes late.

The specific date of her death is not given by media or the health and disability commisioners full report. Just early 2020.

Health and disability commission and the herald report that it was a Triage issue. That the dispatcher marked it as code orange not code red.

But in the whole report, they never mention, covid, lockdowns, or the increased protocols or demand in 2020. Are you seriously saying that didn’t delay the response?

Were there a shortage of oxygen concentrators? Because in June 2020 RNZ reported some countries were reporting shortages of medical oxygen.

What date did this young lady die? This is an incomplete report. And there should be an independent enquiry. The govt shouldn’t be investigating itself. Did the extreme protocols of covid cost lives.

This NZ Doctor article mentions, “longer times for ambulance crews to complete 111 call-outs due to additional safety precautions that must be taken both at the scene, during transport and at hospital.” Also a 17% increase in callouts for breathing problems.

  No system is ever going to always make perfect decisions because there are always elements of unknown, probability and risk assessments.
  
  Triage can generally make the right decisions (eg. prioritising the high risk over the low risk), but that does not mean risk is eliminated.
  
  It is fine to review incidents so long as the intention is to focus on improving the processes, but if all that they are trying to do is hand out blame for specific incidents then this just becomes witch hunting – and counter productive.

    The report is very obvious what happened. It had nothing to do with the lock down which had gone to level 1 when this girl died (wasn’t hard to find when she died). The ambulance that was near by was sent on a break, it wasn’t busy.

An investigation was done into the circumstances around the cock up with the call centre. You don’t care about this girl or the other people in articles you post.       Actually it was very easy to find out when she died. It’s none of your god damn business when she died but it was in the middle of July when the country was at level 1.         I didn’t say anything anything at all that would be construed as unkind about the person who died. My question is why wasn’t the covid response mentioned in a report on why ambulances are delayed in 2020. It is weird because Covid was an unprecedented health issue and response.
        
        And re the dog bite issue on a previous post, I asked why the breed wasn’t disclosed. And you went off that I shouldnt be talking about a person who died right after they died. Well it’s now 6 months later and we still don’t know. So if breed. Was a factor in the death the public don’t have that information. And your suggestion is I shouldn’t ask in case it offends someone.

It openly states that the caller fucked up, the caller didn’t send the ambulance that was close by and instead they were sent on break. But no that isn’t good enough for you.   I heard a fascinating story with a happy ending on RNZ about 5.30 this morning
  Someone from the BBC interviewed a Nepalese guy who had the job of lugging a suitcase full of kit to the summit of Mt Everest to measure it’s altitude and exact location
  He spent two hours collecting readings in -40° and set off back down again. He was absolutely buggered and went to sleep in the snow for a couple of hours.
  Fortunately someone gave him a kick in the arse and woke him up otherwise he would have died. As it was he had frost bitten fingers and toes, but he managed to get far enough down the mountain to where he could be helicoptered out.
  The height of Everest was the same as the last time the measured it twelve years previously

Anyone hoping for massive changes in South Africa’s general election (now 96% counted) will be sorely disappointed.

There is virtually no change in outcome since the last election in 2019. About the only real difference is that voter participation is down even further with only around 35% of eligible voters bothering to get registered and then vote.

The ruling ANC party scored 57% in the last, 2019, election. The ANC has always been highly factionalised (even going back to the 1960s all the way through apartheid). This election they have fragmented into two separate parties who, combined still got 55% of the vote and will undoubtedly work together to continue their looting and mis-management.

The hot-headed EFF lost some support which surprised be a bit – likely their members joined the disillusioned 65% or so who didn’t vote.

So it looks like a continuation of business as usual – where business is primarily corruption and looting, slowly, and possibly inevitably, taking South Africa down the same road as the rest of Africa.

  With the loss from EFF, it is quite possible they will not be a viable coalition partner. Might not change much except that ANC effectively have no where else to go except to MK, which could be interesting to watch, having to shear a trough will be a new experience for them. MK might extract a pretty heavy price – like kicking Ramaphosa to the curb if the ANC’s only other alternative is the DA.
