Consider for a tolerant moment the almost seeming rediculous simplicity of American Byron Katie questions –

Every time you do [absolutely question any belief] you are becoming enlightened to who and what you are, the true nature of being. To question what you believe is an amazing gift to give yourself, and you can have it all the days of your life. The answers are always inside you, just waiting to be heard.

Katie has four questions for any passing thoughts that have become an unquestioned belief, the first two being of utter simplicity –
Q1. Is it true?
Q2. Can you absolutely know that it’s true?

“Is it true? Can you absolutely know that it’s true?”

No one at Waitangi really properly found out
The ignorant and uninformed, indeed perhaps the deliberately misinformed, having the chance to hear the one person who could clearly state what is troubling them, and then question its utter truth, or not, sang over the top of that chance and remained troubled, but also remained unable to question the truth of their directed frustration and anger.

What a missed opportunity, and what a missed occasion for the Maori King to even demand silence for Seymour, the embodiment of the ‘three-headed taniwha’ to explain himself – like, reveal what is true or not.

What a bloody shame. Now we all will see history repeat itself
And of this collective stupidity by a portion of those at Waitangi, the truth may be – they want to remain troubled, remain in victim hood (but colonised a second time, mentally, by their own choice)

      It is interesting to note the repeat rate of Newsroom articles in other media party outlets or repeater stations which fit into their narrative. Sadly Newsroom have seemed to be trying to make the news instead of reporting it but without the “Opinion” rider we might expect. I let it keep coming as these days so few emails arrive and it serves as an indicator of how far the media have strayed from giving us the news and what might be expected from the rest of the mob.

  The Maori King asking for silence is fanciful as not all Maori/iwi recognize his standing.
  He has no constitutional significance in NZ, or on our democratic processes, and other than being a Elder/leader for Tainui; and a puppet for Tuku Morgan, he has no influence over the majority of Kiwi’s.
  And I do wish our bloody painful MSM media would stop referring to him as some higher power in NZ.

  Clearly they know that their article is BS.
  I’m getting really fed up with the media running the line , and using useful idiots, to say Act is racist and wanting to cancel the treaty.
  Racism now seems to be calling for equal treatment for everyone regardless of race. Oh how anti racist protester’s of the past would have welcomed this.
  Seymour’s bill only seeks to define the oft mentioned Treaty Principles. None of which are defined or even in the TOW, but appear in legislation and Government employment contracts, asking people to obey or follow these u defined principles.
  No less than the Maori King in his Rātana and Waitangi speech has confirmed there are no such thing as Treaty Principles.
  He’s done Seymour’s job for him , essentially agreeing with Seymour’s beliefs so no doubt will support the Government’s move to remove any references in legislation or employment contracts, to the Principles of the Treaty.
  Why can’t the media or Maori join the dots.

Listening to Chris Luxon being interviewed by Ingrid Hipkiss on RNZ this morning, I was impressed by his calm responses to her mostly idiotic questions.

It’s a refreshing contrast to how other politicians and commentators present their views.

  Perhaps some summer intern in the PM’s office will receive a kick up the backside for merely copying and pasting parts of Chris’s last year’s Waitangi speech and not paraphrasing them so they look different.
  Anyway it is difficult to accuse Chris of changing his attitudes to suit circumstances when his 2024 speech is consistent to his 2023 speech (when he was Leader of the Opposition).

  Yesterday I saw what I believe to be a sad and disgraceful presentation by a Newshub reporter Amelia Wade at the Treaty Grounds
  
  If I was her employer I would send her a letter in the following terms.
  
  Dear Ms Wade
  Whatever the sun and the persuasion of Waitangi Day led you to express in somewhat vicious terms your view of the Elected Prime Minister of New Zealand in that you on numerous occasions called him just Luxon.
  The longer you spoke the worse your consideration of what you were doing was sad to say the least.
  He is the Elected Prime Minister and will be accorded that in all circumstances, as will other Ministers.
  Whilst you work hard in the Press Galley you tried to ensure that the current Government was not elected, they were, so show some deference, even trying and outdo Tova, the arch anti Government media person, is wasted.
  Sadly you and your other media lady colleague continue to outsmart everything the elected Government is doing, other than you want. That is not clever !
  Why should the Prime Minister chose to ignore you as you run along side him shouting to ask him why he will not give you an interview – even you.
  You lost the Election so take a hard look at yourself and perhaps for the sake of you future employment get some Counselling.
  As your employer take this as a serious opinion – the Prime Minister is the Prime Minister whether you like him or not.
  Unlike you, he was duly Elected by the people of New Zealand.

    This is unfortunately a standard journalistic style which would seem to date from earlier times when using christian names for males was avoided (eg in schools). The first time a person is referred to in an article, the full ‘description’ would be used eg Hon Justice Jones or Chris Luxon, but subsequent references use just the surname as the ‘tag’. While this may have been OK in years gone by, I regard this as disrespectful nowadays especially with regard to the judiciary. They can surely be referred to as ‘the judge’ for the tag. In other cases the christian name can surely be used as a tag. There is a slight issue in Chris Luxon’s case as ‘Chris’ could be ambiguous but this issue would go away when Labour appoints a new leader.
    So journos are merely following general journalistic ‘style’ and individual journos cannot be blamed for merely following accepted journalistic ‘style’ which is what their editors expect.

    Wow .. just finished listening to Elizabeth Rata answering Thomas Coughlan’s questions. Long interview, but everything she explains is solid, clear and logical. Thomas seems to be biased and unread. The other point that occurred to me is MSM keep pandering to the left but also at this time to the tribalists and their followers who are very much a minority. You would think that MSM would want to maximise their opportunity to generate revenue and If you’re wanting to increase your revenue and listeners and readers and at least appeal to a wider audience.

  Remember Ajaz – the guy that took 14 wickets, including all 10 in an innings not long ago (2021) and then gets dropped.
  
  BTW he was only the 3rd player to take all 10 in an innings – preceded by greats Jim Laker 1956 and Anil Kumble 1999.

    Context pdm, context. Brand got most of his wickets because NZ were trying to force the pace on a slow wicket with a bit of turn, not because of any great skill at getting people out. And on Patels 10, it was a great performance. But again, context. The ball was turning relatively sharply with bounce in Bombay. If memory serves me, Ashwin took 4 for 6 (and turned it square) in NZ’s innings of about 60 on the second day.

Maori activists lawfare. Waitangi Tribunal claims since the 2023 election – smoking x 2, Maori Health Authority, Maori Language (plus a High Court case). More to come. And also more taxpayer funding to respond. That would be taxpayer funding diverted from other priorities in an environment of belt tightening.

The Waitangi Tribunal has already said claimants are not properly funded to bring their claims according to a culturally appropriate process.

    Easy to say when you are not there, but I would have no trouble. Bit of blood and a couple of gonads on the floor to make sure they never breed. If you know you are going to die if you do nothing, it changes your mindset real quick.

      For hijackers to fly into buildings deliberately was not something that had occurred before. When people on the flight UN93 learnt their suicidal intentions then the plane-load of people did fight back and forced the jihadis to ditch short of target as they fought to enter the cockpit.

  There was an incident at Nelson’s velodrome last week where a boy lost control of his bicycle when he rode into the twisty tunnel that accesses the velodrome and hurt himself when he scraped himself on the wall. Resultantly, his mother called for “padding” to be mounted on the wall.
  Wouldn’t it be simpler and far more productive to inform unskilled riders that, if their capabilities aren’t up to it, they should walk their bikes through the tunnel than risk injury?
  Most would realise there are many things other than tunnel walls that are potential threats to unwary cyclists, so should we “pad” them all?

I don’t want to add to a mother’s grief by being insensitive.
A couple of weeks ago a man aged 34 jumped from the top of the floating crane Hikitia, which is berthed in Wellington on the waterfront, into the water.
He died.
The news tells us this morning that his grieving mother wants Hikitia gone.
That’s to remove the ‘temptation’, presumably, and save people from themselves so they won’t ‘make stupid decisions’.
I thought: ‘How typically New Zealand. Somebody does something that’s dumb, fatally, and the implication is that it’s someone else’s fault. Therefore, ban the floating crane.’
I’m sorry for the mother. No parent should have to bury their child no matter how old he is.
I’m sorry to be insensitive.
But her 34 year-old boy should have known better.

The bulletins this morning harped on and on about Luxon repeating the same ( few lines) words from last year’s speech as if it was a terrible thing. Honestly!

    It is up to the editors and media outlet management to set a policy around this and enforce it.

    Not all journalists are news readers.
    I would rather just have the facts of a story presented on the news.

      As a former newspaper reporter, admittedly from days gone by, my experience was that no reporter was permitted to insert their opinion into a news story.
      Or spin the facts to give a certain impression based on a personal agenda.
      If a reporter did that, the sub-editors would be straight into the reporters’ room for a sort out.
      If it was really bad, the subs would be followed by the editor and the general manager to give an update on editorial and management policy.
      That was the news.
      If some wanna-be influencer in the reporters room wanted to bestow their personal knowledge and opinion on the paper’s subscription payers and advertising funders, then they had a process of justification to go through.

Was listening (until they got turned off) to a couple of ZB’s (far) left wing hosts over the weekend (I don’t mean their more moderate centre-left ones), sticking the knife into the coalition govt (mainly Luxon, Seymour and Peters but also some others), picking out minor issues and blowing them out of proportion, denigrating their character and making them sound like “evil”, untrustworthy people in it for themselves.

(Whilst thinking how come they never scrutinise their left-wing politician mates in the same way? Was also thinking these two would be better off at Red Radio but suggest even they wouldn’t be welcome there because of their egos)!

Also one of their more familiar hosts kept up the pretence that Seymour was “changing the Treaty of Waitangi” and this encouraged a few callers to put the boot in.

Which got me thinking. Yes we know elements of the MSM are deliberately misrepresenting ACT’s intentions. And at the end of the day what is wrong with public debate to advance the pros and cons from both sides (so why shut it down)?

But clearly there is a lot of ignorance in the community about ACT’s intentions.

Which also got me thinking perhaps ACT needs to point out how the Treaty Principles impact on everyday NZers including Maori (and of course Pakeha and immigrants).

Yes we have some ideas in terms of the “radicalisation” of public services (funded by the taxpayer) or more control of public entities by un-elected Maori tribal representatives. (And what happens if there are conflicts between tribes within an area but only one tribe is represented? This is a real issue amongst Maoridom – there is no unified voice)!

But what else and what does it mean to the joe average Maori (and Pakeha) in the street? Especially those that don’t follow politics and only hear Labour led sympathetic-MSM talking points denigrating the coalition and believe them?

Suggest if ACT can articulate this better they may get more support from the “people”. Especially once they realise they will NOT benefit from Labour/Green/TPM/MSM/radical activists wanting more control.

(Does anyone have any suggestions? Asking to get the ball rolling)!

  The Dems are crazy to fight to remove Presidential immunity, as you say. The concept of being able to charge a president for actions they did during their term opens up a huge can of worms. For example Bush could be done for starting a war on known false information (Iraq war / WMDs) or Obama could be done for murder (drone attacks on ‘civilians’ without due process). Hell even Biden could get done for something like freezing student loan repayments knowing that it was illegal and he didn’t have the power to do so (he publicly said it at the time).
  
  The TDS has blinded people (left and right) to the pitfalls of opening various cans of worms up. Are we now going to see a process where every change of government is followed by multiple legal cases against the former President. A very sad situation.

    Presidents have immunity for official acts taken in their role as President. So your Bush & Obama examples are immune from prosecution.
    
    But they do *not* have blanket immunity for any and all acts, such as acts they take as a private citizen.
    
    For example, just because you are the President that doesn’t mean you can rob a bank and claim legal immunity … because robbing banks is clearly not part of the official role of the President.

  Presidents still have immunity for official acts performed in their capacity as President of the United States.
  
  But this just affirms the common sense legal view that Presidents do not have immunity for acts made in their private capacity as citizens. All the Jan 6 stuff relates to Trump acting in his capacity as a Candidate for President, not as POTUS. Similarly, if Trump were to have shot someone in Times Square while he was President that would not be covered by Presidential immunity.

Just watched a recording of last night’s Seven Sharp on TV One, with a piece on the Treaty and related events.

Right now I’m trying to work out how such a one-sided piece of propaganda can be put out by the Government owned media organisation. This is so obvious now, the blatant rewriting of history.

Small points like, they said the Treaty was written (omitting to say drafted in English), and then translated (again omitting to say into Maori). Then claiming that the definitive version was the Maori version. Then claiming that some of the Maori words meant different things. eg what sovereignty meant. Again not mentioning that especially at that time, the Maori language had limited vocabulary, which related primarily to their culture, and so lacked the subtlety of the far more comprehensive English language.

In any research on provenance in any area of endeavour, it is the original version that is definitive, and that plainly is the English version.

OK, there’s much, much more to critique, but that is not the purpose of this post. What is to be seen here is the total bias in the reporting. Where was the representative of Hobson’s Pledge, or other historian that could elucidate these simple and plainly obvious points above?

Where was there mention of the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852 set up New Zealand’s parliamentary system, based on the Westminster model. No mention of the 1860 Kohimarama conference that reaffirmed the Treaty of Waitangi, and how the system of Government was to work for Maori. The Minutes of that meeting, indicate that the explanation provided by Governor Grey was “loudly applauded by the Chiefs”.

On another track, I recently started to review my online security privacy issues, given that I am generally aware that much of what we do online is tracked, and that data is them aggregated, analysed, packaged, and onsold to various other parties.

I am also aware of the real-time monitoring of our activities on social media, especially Facebook, Messenger etc. About 8 years ago while on an overseas trip under the auspices of Trade & Industry, one of the other companies was selling their software expertise with a product that hooked into Facebook’s back end. This could be set up with key words to watch for. The demonstration they had was quite something. Given the relationship now between governments and the likes of Facebook, I’m quite sure there is a profile now, with not only our government, on each of us, with all our postings analysed and categorised.

So how is this information used? For elections I’m sure it is critical, and especially this year for the USA elections, he who masters this will have a better chance of winning.

I guess after 35 years of being online, I’m now way past worrying, but in case you do want to limit your exposure to prying eyes, here as good review of what you can do in just under 20mins.

    rouppe, my wife follows the news closely and grew up in London reading the newspapers and watching the news, at a time when the Internet was in its infancy.
    
    She still watches the news at 6, but more out of habit these days. The vast majority of her news is consumed online, and when we watch the news in the evening she will comment about articles that she read about TWO DAYS ago. She is far better informed about what’s going on in the world from the half-hour or so she spends reading the news online in the morning than she could possibly hope to be if she relied on 1 News.
    
    Thanks to technology we simply skip over an ever-increasing proportion of the childish twaddle that masquerades as news on TV1. We completely ignored all the ‘reporting’ on Waitangi Day, and prefer to check the weather online rather than trying to comprehend Te Rauhiringa Brown (who I’m sure has the best of intentions, but good intentions are somewhat meaningless if viewers who are trying to understand the weather report are left utterly baffled because they simply cannot follow it).
    
    Does anybody think that one day TV1 will realise there’s this thing out there called The Internet that offers far more choice and up-to-date news than they can ever hope to match?

  Also a very good way to answer the Nats regards their insistence that it is a partnerships (which is obvious BS). Here is ACT’s response, or part of their response….

One of my tennis besties is South African.
They arrived here about 8 years ago from Joberg concerned for their children’s future. Twin girls at St Cuths now. Her hubby is a Diamond Dealer and she’s a qualified Beautician. A nicer family you wouldn’t meet.

It’s crazy that sooo many people like this are being driven out of their home country.
She was saying SA is a total cot-case under Black rule. The government is driving out entrepreneurs like them to their own detriment.
She just re-tweeted this to show the current state of the dump.
A black judge has ruled that singing…. “Kill the Boer – Kill the Farmer” is NOT hate speech!
They hold grave fears for family members who remain there.
From what she was saying, it appears the black population simply don’t understand that without Farmers, there is NO FOOD!!

  The “Kill the Boer” song actually refers to Afrikaners – not farmers, or white people in general, but specifically Afrikaners.
  
  The ANC “liberation” song was originally sung in Xhosa and speaks of amaBulu (Zulus and Xhosa can’t say the “r” sound, so the Boer becomes bulu, then to fit in with the grammar amaBulu).
  
  amaBulu are specifically Afrikaners. Whites in general are abelungu (the white foam that blows from the sea).
  
  The “Kill the Boer, Kill the farmer” is a modern interpretation by the EFF people who come from the Northern parts of South Africa inhabited by the Venda and similar tribes who can say the “r” sound.

  I’ve just come back from a few weeks in SA visiting family and friends, and doing some site seeing. As cmm says, the cot’s been stolen.
  
  While there are still some amazing places (Victoria Waterfront, Table mountain, Bolders and Penguin colony, some gated communities, etc. The contrast between what’s good and what’s bad is massive. Anything privately owned or run is doing generally well, but anything state of local government run is a disaster. The exception to this is significant tourist attractions like Table Mountain and the Cable way.
  I left SA ~18 years ago, and this is my second time back since then. On balance, coming to NZ was the best decision we made.

    I left SA in 1992 and have never been back.
    
    I think the only bit I miss on occasions is Cape Town where I went to university (1980-83), then lived (1988-92). The area from Wynberg to UCT is fantastically beautiful and UCT must be the most spectacular university setting in the world.
    
    But from what I have heard, even Cape Town has deteriorated significantly, so probably visiting my 1992 memories is far better than visiting in person.

Case seems to hang on tikanga Māori, and how it determines Smith’s relationship to coastal land and waters which are being flooded and damaged.

  Second is that flooding and damage caused by climate change caused by human kind or is it caused in whole or in part by climatic change inherent in the ecosystem we inhabit.
  Third if it is caused by human kind to what extent?
  Fourt, to what extent have the defendants in this claim contributed to that damage?

  Why do people’s brains turn to mush when it comes to “Climate Change!”?
  E.g. The Supreme Court has this to say…
  “It cited the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s findings that “as the planet continues to warm, climate change risks ‘will become increasingly complex and more difficult to manage'”.
  
  That isn’t a “finding” – it’s a claim, or a prediction. It’s not a fact.
  Then there’s the repeated false claim that CO2 is pollution. It’s as much pollution as oxygen or water are – too much of that stuff will kill you too, but we don’t call it pollution, do we? CO2 is the giver of life on this planet, and to date, the increased CO2 in the atmosphere has been _beneficial_ to plant life on the planet.
  
  Having said that, Mike would seem to have a reasonable chance of winning – it appears that any and all rationality is missing from everybody involved in the case.

I am presently reading 1984 and these words struck me as applying to the attacks on free speach by certain groups we are experiencing.

It goes on about the origins of this new aristocracy which are not fully applicable today. However Orwell’s next words are prophetic ” hungrier for pure power, and, above all, more conscious of what they were doing and more intent on crushing opposition.”
Do these words apply to the journalists, teachers ,bureaucrats, etc of today ?

  I keep this book handy and re-read it when I need to be reminded how societies can be manipulated and controlled. It seems that the previous PM, Ardern was also a keen reader of the book.     Kurmasheva was working for Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, those are clearly funded by the American government which clearly makes her an American agent of some sort.
    Gershkovich was working for The Wall Street Journal, what do you think are the chances that the American Intelligence community has influence with the Wall Street Journal?

Luxon is just so weak. I can’t understand why he is letting the media pack run his government. Now at his latest stand up he has gone from ‘no commitment’ to supporting the referendum to “we will not be supporting it.” He just stands there like a mug letting people like Jenna Lynch speak to him like sh*t. The way Luxon has described Seymours bill – as ‘divisive’ and ‘unhelpful’ – has been a total breach of good faith. IMO Seymour has every right to withdraw from this government and we go back to the polls. I want a strong and principled PM, not a duplicitous corporate robot.

  Luxon’s stance on this has remained the same through the campaign and to now. Its not national or nz first policy, they are free to give their views on it. Jezz, let’s not get to a point where people want political parties silenced from giving their views on policy. Do you see Seymour running around whinging about what Luxon is saying? No. He knows he has to do the work to get this any further. He has to convince the country that this bill is needed before anything can happen.

And I see where Commerce Minister Andrew Bayley is going to scrap all remaining tarrifs on imports. A saving to consumers of $190 million.
Considering it costs $250 to collect, think of all the beaurecrats they can dump.

What i love about it, is imported Fragrances will come down by 20%. YAY!!

  It’s weird any import duties still exist.
  
  But some of us remember the 80s… just, when almost everything was made either prohibitively expensive due to duty or banned entirely.
  
  The glory of Rogernomics blew that away to a large degree and this country went red hot. Oh, what times. A young man rampant in a semi-capitalist economy where individuals could have consensual economic relationships. The memory warms me greatly.
  
  If only National’s program were so inspiring. We’ll see. Nicola Willis ain’t no Douglas.

  Ghost, there is something weird about that interview. Apart from those severely infected with Trump Derangement Syndrome it seems to be too good to be true. Putin does not speak in “public relations” speak. Note his welcome reprieve when asked about Taylor Swift. And Putin worries the excrement out of far quits when he says there are two genders. And Putin welcomes global warming, if there is such a thing. Imagine the increase in Siberian agriculture if there is a such a thing. The Mexican border has got Putin flummoxed.
  I get the impression that Putin wants an honest America so that world commerce can continue in a proper manner. The Russkies make a quid out of exporting gas to Germany so that the Russkies can afford more American goods.
