Have a read of TV One’s Maori Affairs reporter Te Aniwa Hurihanganui’s explanation of what the Treaty of Waitangi actually means on their website. It is such a completely one sided view in favour of Maori that, if true, would provide absolutely no incentive for the British to sign up to it.

    If the British intended the Treaty to be enduring, then they would have added the words “her heirs and successors according to law” after Crown obligations, as they did in the Magna Carta (1066) and all other Crown obligations to this date.
    
    They did not, so it was never expected to endure with the following Monarch/s.

      I’m no expert on this but my understanding is, a Treaty is an agreement between peoples, usually after some event or inflexion point. Examples, Treaties of Versailles, Brest Litosvk, Peace of Westphalia. As such they can’t really be expected to last as you can’t nail down the future.
      
      Some other examples. Covenant – agreement between God and followers, Contract – legal agreement between single entities, Charter or Constitution – agreement between people and Government.

    Am I correct in understanding that the text of the Treaty was written in English and then translated in the Maori language of the time – which by all account had a very limited vocabulary compared to English?
    
    On that timeline, would not then the English version be the definitive text?
    
    Were there Maori Chiefs or elders at the time who also spoke English who could have called out any concerning differences? Then or even later at the Kohimärama Conference of 1860 where the meeting of Chiefs did not raise such issues in the translation (despite some recent “historians” attempt to insert / interpret “partnership” at that point in time).
    
    On that latter point, when I search and read recent “official” government websites about such matters, there is a very distinct re-rendering of, and/or slanting of the historical events to fit with a modern view that reinterprets the Treaty document in way that appears to benefit only the “tribal elite”.
    
    There is a trick/deception used by “cult leaders” to control their group, and that is the use of “Victim Mentality”. What is the victim mentality? A victim mindset usually includes three types of thinking:
    
    First, the bad things in your life are not your fault, but exclusively because of what other people have done to you. This mindset maintains that you are not responsible for your own actions and attitudes.
    
    Second, a victim mentality also includes getting stuck in negative thought patterns. If you play the victim, you may be characterized by a “woe is me” kind of self-pity.
    
    Third, the victim mentality sees the world through the lens of your own struggles. All the events of your life are orchestrated against you. Whatever happens in the world or in your circumstances, the victim mentality sees those circumstances as directed against yourself.
    
    You can be true victim and not have a victim mentality. You are not required to have this destructive thinking, even if you have been mistreated.
    
    Interestingly this has been expanded to bring in the use of the “Guilt Complex”, to the extent where, from my current perspective, some of the strongest supporters of this revisionist history are non-Maori.
    
    We have recently seen our whole country, nigh the whole world, suckered in on a false pandemic response. The techniques of mass indoctrination are well learned and implemented. It is required now to create an antidote, whether that be through education, or other method, to innoculate our population, especially the young, to be able to identify when they are being manipulated by the “smiling assassins” (Ardern etc), and repel their attempts to control and dictate to us in our lives.

    The only mention of government in the treaty is kawanatanga (governorship) in article 1. The treaty clearly proposed that government would by a governor appointed by the Queen. That is what subsequently happened, and nobody objected at the time. Even in the New Zealand wars a generation later the triggering issue was bad faith in land dealing, not the claim that the governor had no right to govern.
    
    More evolved government structures like parliaments and who gets to vote are not even discussed in the treaty and were sorted at a much later date. The treaty has nothing to say about those things except that Maori are guaranteed the rights of British subjects in article 3 and so would get to vote on the same terms as every other British subject.

      … and the Maori seats were established around the time they were establishing the parliament. At the time the Brits realised with Maori being about 60,000 and the rest in NZ being 10,000 Maori would quite possibly end up with a majority in then house. To eliminate this risk, as they saw it, they established the Maori seats. Ironic, as today they number of Maori MPs means Maori are over-represented in parliament. Should really remove the Maori seats as they are no longer required.

        Well not actually- the first parliament was in 1853 and the Maori seats were created in 1867. The european population easily outnumbered the Maori one by that stage-there never was really any chance of Maori being in a majority. Apart from anything else Maori tribes had no tradition of co-operation.

  Is despicable, but also evolution in action, as mental disorders of kids and/or their parents removes them from the gene pool.
  
  Human race actually has a huge problem brewing as we have eliminated previous evolutionary pressures through medical and welfare interventions meaning that all the maladies that used to prevent people having kids – being too thick or otherwise mentally incapable to viably support yourself and children, or myriad significant medical problems that would do similar (including previously lethal birthing issues) are no longer being pruned. Meaning that a greater and greater proportion of children (and increasing each generation) will be born with serious life-long handicaps and previously disqualifying medical problems. That kindness is unavoidably producing an enormous wake of life-long suffering and unhappiness.

    Truth is, we’ve eliminated natural selection. Mainly thanks to socialism. This sets us down an extremely dangerous path towards genetic and social economic devolution. Picture the movie “Idiocracy” for a glimpse into our future.
    
    There is only really two solutions. 1) End socialism and bring back natural selection. 2) Keep going with socialism but bring in “Artificial selection”.
    
    It seems clear to me that we are stuck into option 2). Powerful people do not want to relinquish the power that socialism gives them over the populace.

All the sound bites I saw on One News last night (before I changed channel) seemed to imply that Chloe is indeed Maori’s new messiah and that Labour is no longer the main opposition party (I think that was actually the major political news story of the night as opposed to the current govt being the ‘enemy’).

It occurred to me though that Te Pati Maori has apparently not yet been contacted for their comment re such an occurrence happening and, perhaps more importantly, whether TPM would unreservedly bestow their blessing upon such an occurrence happening.

  After all Labour’s decimation last election was largely in part due to some of their former supporters swapping voting allegiance to the Greens.

…….but strangely left out the bit where he said “he will lift his gun , aim it at the enemy and let the shots do the talking”

Self censorship , active protection , misinformation, disinformation ?
What could it be when the fourth estate refuse to report the full story with all the violent implications in the language used , but yet make all manner of allegations against Luxon, Seymour and Co.

  It’s time the media and more importantly,the Police take them to task. The inevitable result of this emotive warlike language is someone picking up a gun and doing what they believe their leaders are calling for.
  Labour pretended to be rather upset at the Mosque massacre , yet are condoning their own MPs and related parties rhetoric which willlead to Tarrant 2.
  
  When this happens and the inevitable majority fight back, the blood will be on the hands of the left political parties and the media .
  The MSM have been very vocal on the effects of hateful speech on female MPs of the left but happily ignore the left calling their fellows to war.

I cannot now find a link to quote a statement made in the media yesterday that said a Waitangi speaker yesterday said he raises a gun and points it, explaining that was actually a metaphor – not to be taken literally.

■ A gunman who shot up a synagogue in the United States referred to the influence of Christchurch mass killer Tarrant’s writing, but to an innocuous phrase which the assailant of Jews said was the most powerful words in the entire manifesto – however I am not allowed to mention those actual words as it is illegal in this country, although probably nowhere else in the entire world.
But the metaphors Tarrant uses have intent, so why not those uttered at Waitangi – although said to be said as great oratory, are they not without intent, else why utter them?

  I think it’s at least a good faith attempt at being reasonable but it’s internally inconsistent and trips over its own feet.
  It can’t decide if the “originalist’ concept is valid or not. In the beginning of the article the original British ideas for relations with Māori are important considerations but later in the article they are not because “it precludes the emergence of Treaty principles” and “it ignores all subsequent historical developments.”
  This subsequent historical development of principals is something that has to be examined closely. Are these principles really Treaty principles at all?
  the progressive left has a very weird relationship with time, history and the past. Obviously the past cannot be changed, the arrow of time moves only one way. But the past may be condemned for present political effect. The British Empire cannot be endorsed as it fails to live up to contemporary ethical standards, neither did Māori tribal society but that can be ignored.
  But the Treaty of Waitangi cannot be explicitly revoked or repudiated by modern progressives even if it was a deal between colonial imperialism and patriarchal tribalism. everyone instinctively see that if an old deal can be broken today then any new deal can just as easily be broken tomorrow.
  What is better is to take it over from the inside, slowly replace the meat and the bones but keep the skin. New cultural principles are invented and then retrospectively projected backwards through time to become “Treaty Principles”. Radical 21st century meat wearing a traditional 19th century skin, a social and political Frankenstein’s monster.

I find the difference between public and private sector very interesting sometimes. Having a discussion with my sister who thinks she will lose her job when the govt department she works for takes a 7% hair cut too its budget. In the private sector these well paid employees would probably take a pay cut because all the jobs are needed . But admitting her job is hardly necessary it will be cut. Her next comment was the remaining employees will want a pay rise because they are now doing more work for the same money.

Setting aside the rudeness of referring to people as “non” anything, this is exactly what we’ve been saying for the last 6 years, and this why Labour got voted out. But this isn’t a moment of honest reflection for Mr Hipkins and why he failed so dismally in the election, no, instead he is criticising the new Government for not including “non-Maori” in a conversation. Do we take this as Mr Hipkins supporting a referendum on the treaty perhaps?

If and when the new ministry of regulation actually gets started, one of the things I reckon they should do is start a database of cost per life saved of existing and new regulation. A year’s worth of that should make for an interesting and valuable study.

Eventually it would be awesome if they could develop, and get all ministries to use, a consistent methodology, preferably one based on micromorts. But that would be more likely to work if it were to start from a good empirical understanding as to what is being done in practice now.

  Driving my suburb yesterday saw a mini-digger working on someones narrow front yard next to footpath at a quiet suburban T-intersection – doing plumbing work I would guess. somewhere around 200 cones arrayed for 100m each road leading to intersection and a road management lollipoppers on each road to handle what was perhaps one car every 5-10 minutes. Work inevitably costing probably 5-10x what it would if sanity were to prevail over the safety elves.

Is it something he’s been trying to keep quiet, as your use of ‘admitted’ implies?
If not, why not a more neutral word like ‘says’?

    (Why didn’t meddling Labour do this? What aren’t the anti-smoking lobby and health experts saying this)?
    
    Heck perhaps the tobacco companies could be selling $10-20 packets of cigarettes again as long as the nicotine levels are halved or more so.

  It has happened again this long weekend! A forecast fly in from around NZ to celebrate 100 years of aviation in Westland was cancelled on the basis of “bad” forecasts. I know the weather has been ok in Westland and that there has been cloud on the main divide so the extreme weather forecast happened elsewhere or did not occur. This cloud could have stopped old planes with pilots without instrument ratings crossing the alps but not other planes? We have reached the stage of “the boy who cried wolf” with the Met Service now. Exaggeration and errors have become the norm particularly with the prediction of severe weather events. Now the forecasts are being discounted by the general public at least. This creates a real dilemma for Civil Defence who get stick for over reacting but would also get stick if they hadn’t prepared perchance Met Service eventually got something right. In Westland there have recently been severe rain warnings and severe wind warnings that have not eventuated.

I have a feeling the likes of the leftist MSM, activists and Labour under-estimate PM Luxon when it comes to Māori issues.

Whilst the leftist MSM, activists and Labour are seeking to divide by making alot of noise and threats, Luxon is quietly getting on meeting with Iwi leadership and promoting a vision of getting the best for all people including Maori.

And he means all Maori, not just the Elites and radicals as Labour/Greens/TPM are pandering to.

By all Maori and all other NZers’ (Pakeha, migrants etc) that’s where National and its coalition partners NZF and ACT will resonate positively the most.

Of course you wouldn’t think that from watching, listening to and reading the leftist MSM and LabGreenTPM … but they aren’t the majority. The majority spoke when they voted in October 2023 and recent polls confirm this support.

In the meantime and apart from Luxon, NZF are not only making their views known in support of the coalition government they are entering dialogue with Maori just like Luxon/National.

This is where ACT, with its several Maori MP’s, need to join in because so far Seymour has been talking to his supporters so he needs to engage now with his non-supporters just like Nat/NZF have been stepping up in order to take their message directly to the people. This is not a criticism of ACT, this is a positive endorsement because Seymour and his MP’s (Maori and Pakeha) have mana with Maori due to their ancestral connections.

This is a big deal in maoridom so what that means for ACT is that Seymour and his MP’s can stand tall and proud against the likes of the Maori radical idiots from TPM, the Greens and Labour and stand their ground … then “crush” them!

Or at least ridicule them and put them down – the likes of the TPM do not have the monopoly on this. So bring it on!

  Clouds have been at core of most objections to predictive skill of climate models since 1980’s. Climate models can’t (and never will unless perhaps fastest computers get trillions of times faster) be able to accurately model water evaporation, convection and condensation effects (not to mention surface wave surface mixing, and wind borne water spray heat transfer that drive a lot of tropical convection) at small length scales needed to provide accurate climate modelling.

From yesterday’s comments I decided to read the 2017 NZ Pandemic Plan.

The key objective is stated as “To minimise deaths, serious illness and serious disruption to communities and the economy arising from an influenza pandemic.”

I think they lost sight of the second part of the objective “serious disruption to the economy”.

The Aderns, Bloomfields, Bakers, Wiles etc lost sight of this completely for their own aggrandisement.

According to Infometrics “Māori learner attendance has fallen from 57% in 2015 to just 27% in 2022.” So how can those Maori youth listening to Peeni Henare understand that he is using his threatening language as a Metaphor? Of the 27% what percentage understands what metaphor means. If it’s half then around 6 out of 7 may take it literally. Yes, he should be charged with inciting violence. I was very disappointed with Tama Potaka’s sarcastic references to his coalition partners, Seymour and Jones, when he questioned their maoriness at the National Iwi Chairs Forum. Huge kudos to Kipa Munro who put Potaka in his place in short shrift.

Did Luxon know Potaka would say these things? Why didn’t Luxon join Munro in censuring Potaka? Is Potaka in the wrong party?

  It could be. There is commentary that some of the things Potaka has written in the past suggest he’s far more, hmm, malleable on these issues than he should be. I’ve seen a link to a paper he wrote that appeared to endorse that view but I can’t find it at the moment. I’ll keep looking.
  
  Since Luxon appears to be on the fence around these things it would suit him to have Potaka there leaving ACT and NZF to take the heat until they run out of steam or the political winds appear to support their view. If that’s Luxon’s game then it’s the opposite of leadership.

  What I mean is the MSM “helpfully” gives us an interpretation of a small part of the incident (no doubt suiting their agenda eg division amongst the coalition).
  
  The lack of pushback against Potaka from Luxon and Seymour perhaps suggests possibly things were taken in a light-hearted way or maybe it wasn’t as bad as the MSM made it out to be?

Just heard NewstalkZB’s 11am bulletin and they’ve changed ‘admitted’ to ‘confirmed’, which is acceptable.
This government is learning fast that you don’t fuck with the Tobacco Nazis, who will go to any lengths to hold on to their turf.
They fight dirty, as the prime minister and his sister-in-law are finding out.
It is clear that someone in the Ministry of Health is leaking against this government.
The Director-General of Health is responsible for his department.
His boss, Peter Hughes, should be calling him in and telling him that unless the leaking stops he is out of a job.
That message should be given to all the public service heads.
To be clear: I am not a smoker; my last Port Royal was 40 years ago and my health improved immeasurably as a result.
Two of my children, in their 40s, and their partners, vape.
My son-in-law spends a lot of time in the dunny hoicking up what sounds like a lot of gunk from his lungs.
But he is a grown-up, and it’s his choice.
I can see what Casey Costello is apparently trying to do – there comes a point where taxing people more and more for their cigarettes becomes pointless.
In the end the smoker gives up and just stops caring.
So why keep taxing them more and more?
Despite the hysteria about ‘more Maori will die’ from smoking we’re down to the last few percent of people smoking.
And anyway, Maori smokers can always do what I did; make the decision to stop smoking – and bloody stick to it!
It can be hard. When I stopped was not my first, second, or third or … time.
But there came a time, now with young children, and I had to stick to it.

Speaking of politicians using metaphors – I really wish they wouldn’t.

Or, at least make it abundantly clear when they do so whether they are talking metaphorically or literally.

Words matter and clear, concise communication from our politicians leaves them less room to wriggle out of commitments made and positions taken.

Purely as an example – I see from time to time politicians referring to Papatuanuku and I am left to wonder whether it’s a rhetorical flourish or whether they actually believe in such a divine being.

If they are talking metaphorically, I would ask why? Why muddle what you are trying to communicate by referring to non-existent entities? If you mean earth, say earth; if you mean water, say water; if you mean sky, say sky etc.

Whereas if they are talking literally, I would like them to say so, so that I can in good conscience mock and ridicule them for believing in such nonsense.

Is anyone else concerned that there are individuals who stand for election (central and local government), and then within a short period of time, resign?

I believe that there is a part to play in parliament, for both government and the opposition benches. And when standing for election, you must accept that the citizens electing you are there to decide where they want you placed.

There is a resultant cost, and also a perversion of the result, by early resignation, and unless there is a compelling compassionate reason, (health of the individual or of their immediate family), then any resignation should come with a consequence. This should be monetary and also a ban from holding any public (funded) office (elected or otherwise) for say ten years. That would prevent James Shaw from taking up any position in a government controlled, government funded, or quasi-government body.

Being elected establishes a contract, and the individual should have the intention to serve it out, and in so doing respect the wishes of those that elect them to that position. Simply bailing out because you did not win a place at the top table, or because you get a better offer, is unacceptable.

Also telling the lie that “the tank is empty” and then accepting a high profile position overseas, should be called out. Such behaviour is both cynical and vacuous, as any thoughtful person can see right through it.

      I agree it is a stressful job, but it is not a job you should accept without a plan. It is a job of governance, a place for people with life and business experience, not a place for those not yet old enough to have developed a full appreciation of the world, nor single issue lobbyists to ply their trade!
      
      A potential candidate need to understand the demands, and only stand if they are confident you have the ability, experience, physical & mental health, and stick-ability to see it through.
      
      I would like to see each candidate at national and local elections required to get 5 personal endorsements, from people who have known them personally for at least 5 years, with some position of society (teacher, lawyer … someone who can put their reputation on the line) – also not family members – to confirm their honesty, strength of character, and that they do not have mental or other issue that could affect their service as an elected official.
      
      This could see the likes of Tory Whanau eliminated before we experienced the embarassment of having the mayor in our Capital city outed as a flake after only a few months – and then stuck with her for 3 more years. In such situations, it would see the those providing the endorsement brought to task, so an incentive to ensure they only support those who will not tarnish their own reputation.

    All parties advertise their list prior to the election, indicating the balance of skills and experience they are presenting for election. Just one person leaving and another coming onboard can significantly alter that balance.
    
    Each person putting their name forward for a List position, as well as an election, is making a promise. Apart for circumstances beyond their control, 3 years is what they should be committed to.

    1. He was a male co-leader, and leaving that position with the obvious choice of Chlöe Swarbrick, moves the so called Green Party far more in the hands of a cabal of far left, feminist firebrands, seemingly hell bent on social engineering and reordering.
    
    2. James was seen as a voice of balance, and reasonableness. On his departure the innate intentions of the others will be unfettered.

  If Jews acknowledged that the recent and ongoing protests were not against Jews in themselves but were against the particular actions of Jews (namely, Israeli Jews), then they’d have to reflect on their actions and assess them and perhaps change them.
  
  But when Jews dishonestly pretend that the protests are motivated by an essential dislike of Jews regardless of their actions, then Jews don’t have to look at themselves but can blame everyone but themselves.
  
  Note that the motivation for the marches in you link is rising anti-semitism, but their is no acknowledgement of the context surrounding the rise. It just happens for no reason, apparently.
  
  It’s a bit like BLM’s proposition that, for instance, the mass incarceration of so many young black men, or their deaths during arrest, is a result of a systemic racial bias, rather than what is obvious, which is that’s it’s direct consequence of the actions of black males.
  
  But it’s much easier to blame everyone but yourself for the plight of your group, rather than identify and address the root cause. No doubt some cops are racist, and no doubt some protestors simply don’t like Jews for being Jews, but that doesn’t change the fact that in the main, there is an observable cause and effect relationship.
  
  Notice how there were no mass so-called “anti-Jewish protests” until Israel started taking particular actions in Gaza. You can disagree with the pro-Palestine/anti-Israel position, but there’s undoubtedly a clear causal relationship here between action and response, despite the Jews’ unwillingness to accept this relationship and to refuse to consider that their actions have led to an increase in antipathy towards them.

    A) Chloe’s tattoo is small and quite diescrete. It would not show up very clearly in a grainy photograph, especially since the photos are not from the best angle to see the tattoo in question.
    
    B) If you do go through the video, carefully, frame by frame, you can see two frames which are from the correct angle to potentially expose any tattoo. In those two frames there are what appear to be a tattoo of generally the right pattern (the round curve of a stylized bee’s wing) in exactly the right place.
    
    It is a grainy photo. Those could be just artifacts of the video compression process. I make no allegations.
    
    However the “where’s the tattoo?” argument is pure nonsense.

      At BFD early on in the saga, one of the commentators (possibly one of the Mods from memory) originally implied it was a Green Party staffer (IIRC? someone might have named the staffer and a google search showed a likeness).
      
      Since then the BFD (well one time when I took a look as only look occasionally) have appeared to ban discussion on this matter, so who knows.
      
      But I think it’s because it isn’t Chloe and whomever that person is has done nothing wrong so unnecessarily bringing her into the public domain could result in legal ramifications. (Plus whoever she is has a tidy hair style – unlike Chloe)!
      
      Note: I don’t mean you (by raising it), nor Maggie as she is being satirical. I just mean if someone stated this as a matter of fact.

  And there must be lots of CCTV camera recordings for locations in the near vicinity, across the road, etc etc.

The fact that these leaders of a political party in receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars in unlawful donations, from a registered charity no less, and are not being mercilessly hounded by our news media tells me all I need to know about our current political landscape.

If it were National or ACT it would never leave the front page.

I note too of the harms to Maori by colonisation mentioned by Waititi – but I can plainly see the results he’s enjoying from his recent bariatric surgery; the man must have lost tens of kilos.

He’s a walking, talking hypocrite of the highest order – he and his well-heeled family are in the top 1% of income earners in this country but endlessly whinges and moans about how hard done by Maori are, and how the whole system is set up to keep them down.

His deceit, his poisonous views, but most of all his riding the back of Maori victimhood make me want to puke.

  Mr Luxon is protected continuously by the Police Diplomatic Protection Squad. No doubt the Squad will do what is needed to ensure Mr Luxon’s safety. Ministers are (AFAIK) not afforded continuous protection but presumably have protection if threats are made etc. When John Key became PM in 2008, lefties took great glee in pointing out that his Police protection costs escalated considerably compared with Helen Clark’s. Helen did not really want protection and in any case was left alone by political enemies, nut cases, etc. John Key simply being Centre-Right drew much more attention from agitators, nut cases, etc.

The wonderful cricket site, cricinfo, mentions that the Tangiwai Shield played for by South Africa and New Zealand commemorates Bob Blair’s fiance having lost the life in the Tangiwai disaster. Bob Blair had received a rapturous applause in 1953 when he appeared as a batsman (ok, old term) in a test match in South Africa after hearing of his intended’s demise.
Trouble is; by spelling fiancee “fiance” it implies that the intended marriage would be N.Z.’s first same sex marriage.

‘You gave users two choices: “Get resources or see results anyway”,’ Cruz said, speaking directly to the Meta founder.

‘Mr. Zuckerberg, what the hell were you thinking?’, barely pausing long enough for the Meta founder to respond.

Zuckerberg said the ‘basic science’ behind the warning was that it was better to direct people searching for such content to get help, rather than blocking it

‘I understand get resources, [but] in what sane universe is there a link for “see results anyway”?’

‘Well, because we might be wrong,’ Zuckerberg replied.

Waitangi – my opinion is that if anyone in our elected Government is assaulted, abused or generally belittled, they should all leave the place. Anything like that happening would, I hope, galvanise any fence sitters, including Luxon, into supporting ACT’s position on the “treaty”.

    Wankers. Minimum wage is for 18 year olds living at home doing menial jobs. Grown ups do grown up jobs and work to improve their incomes. A $24 minimum wage does nothing to encourage people to work hard, get better jobs and improve their lot in life. It also forces small businesses to pay staff a shit load more than they are worth and consequently forces them to increase prices. Fuck Labour.
