  Quite right krazy. The kids were never in danger from covid, it was a virus really only significantly harmful for those over 65 and those with other health conditions.
  
  But they wanted to lock everybody down so the information about it being harmful to old people was locked away and to this day a lot of people don’t know it.

The message from Māoridom is clear
“There are a number in these arrangements that just grate at the Māori soul,” said Rahui Papa of Waikato-Tainui.
The Government was well aware it was going to be challenged – so came prepared with its own wero.
“Frankly, when two-thirds of Māori kids are not at school regularly, that is a responsibility for both iwi leaders and the Government to work on. It’s a responsibility for people to step up and take responsibility and get their kids to school,” said Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
He said he was being “straight up” about “what we expect them to do and what they expect us to do”.
Papa said: “Of course we want our children educated but we want them educated not just in the Western world – we want them cloaked in their culture as well.”

Has Luxon muddied the waters a little with his great deflect attempt.
Perhaps he should have demanded ‘What “just grates at the Māori soul” ‘
Name the actual items that grate
That is how a logical real “conversation” occurs

Rather than an Ardernian conversation where one side doesn’t even state their position,
A threat to fight is not a two way conversation – as shown by Jacinda’s Capital Gains Tax debacle and the promised, but totally missed, ‘conversation’ about the current subject: “co-governance”, which is now about the “Treaty”, but not really about which “sacrosanct” version (1980s or the original 1840 version) or whether “co-governance” or the word “Aotearoa” is actually in it.

But see how the deflect works – do you now want to attack “Aotearoa” or examine “co-governance”?

What is in it, or not – like as mentioned regularly, “abortion” is not in the United States Constitution, so fix it at each State level and chuck out what is in your founding document if it wasn’t there in the first place.
See again, another deflect – media raved over ‘abortion’, but not whether we should examine our own ‘Founding Document’ for it original actual content – and remove the extra 1980s carriages added to the Gravy Train (deflect again)

Because no-one, it seems, in media reportage ever reveals the exact detail of what angers Maori – what Jackson says they may “go to war over” and the Iwi Forum says they “have no other option but to fight”
Over what, fuck it!

  The 1980s carriages added are “Forestry and Fisheries.”
  They are not in the original document in Maori, or the Littlewood Draft.
  Remove them and the Gravy Train comes to a grinding halt. This is why Elite Maori are fighting to keep it.

    I know you keep banging on about the Littlewood draft.
    
    However, the official English text (the English version actually signed) is perfectly clear on the point about forests and fisheries. Article 2 provides for “the full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their Lands and Estates Forest Fisheries and other properties they may collectively or individually possess as long as it is their wish and desire to retain the same in their possession…”
    
    Your view that this is not the actual wording of Article 2 is, to be charitable, a quixotic quest.

      You are so wrong Wayne. The Maori version is the only one that matters and it doesn’t say ‘Forests and Fisheries’. The English one that was signed was just used to collect signatures and it was dated a day earlier than the so-called Littlewood draft. The latter does not mention ‘Forests and Fisheries’. The English one was only a draft and obviously Forests and Fisheries was removed from the later draft (Littlewood). So I reiterate – the Maori Treaty is the only one that matters. It is the ‘final’ one. You need to learn our true history Wayne.

        Both the English and Maori texts are equally valid. It is true that most Maori only signed the Maori text, though 29 did sign the English text as well as the Maori text. NZ First wants both versions to be referred to in the contemporary discussion.
        
        Many Maori do argue the Maori text takes precedence, mostly over the sovereignty question. The Maori text saying governance was ceded whereas the English text says sovereignty was ceded. There are other differences as well.
        
        In any event my point wasn’t about the differences of the Maori and English texts as such, it was about Steve’s view that the officially accepted English text is not actually the English text version. He is wrong on that.
        
        The English text that is in the Treaty of Waitangi Act and referred to in other legislation, is accepted as the proper English text. The reason being that is the one that was signed.
        
        All sorts of legal documents, including treaties, have multiple versions developed during negotiation. The one that counts is the one that is signed.
        
        Steve’s argument that other English texts are the proper versions is a complete non-starter. He is going to convince no-one except fans of Julian Batchelor.

        The (today’s) officially accepted English text is the James Freeman version, adopted by the Waitangi Tribunal because it suited the Tribunal.

    If you’ve got ‘Lands’ in there, what difference does ‘Forestries’ make? Surely trees grow on land! If Maori have some land and they have a forest on it…what’s the big deal?!
    Why are we getting hung up on this stuff when ‘lands, forestries, and fisheries’ have been covered by Treaty settlements. Maori got Sealord, Maori have customary rights.
    The key thing is who will *govern* NZ. Will it be the democratically elected government, or Maori elites, or both, or will Maori have their own ‘state within a state’? This is what we all want to know: who is going to govern, and will we be one nation or two? And this is all bound up with part of the Treaty that concerns sovereignty and governance.
    This stuff about ‘lands, forestries, fisheries’ is a red herring, surely.

  Luxon got his responsibilities the wrong way around. The primary responsibility to get their kids to school sits with their parents, always.
  
  To the extent that Maoris have a collective culture, sure, their iwi can chip in. It would be great to see iwi leaders speak publicly about the benefits of education, and how access to European education was a principal reason for their forebears signing the treaty.
  
  By the time you get to government’s responsibility for getting kids to school, very much last level. A truancy service is bottom of the cliff stuff.

  Actually in the 19th century the Maori chiefs demanded that their children be taught in English at school. They wanted it. So the word to the teachers, was Maori at home and English at school.
  
  The idea that Maori children were given corporal punishment for speaking Maori at school is true in a limited sense. But the part that is left out, is that their chiefs and elders wanted them to speak English at school. That they were given corporal punishment is neither here nor there, corporal punishment was common in those days.
  
  I would suggest that the current Maori chiefs and elders, if they want their kids to be immersed in Maori culture, then they should use the treaty settlement money and open their own schools. I’d be fine with that.
  
  Otherwise make sure their kids get to state schools and get a decent education, the same as everybody else.

    There is nothing stopping them learning about their culture at home like all the other ethnicities do. Surely it is their parents’ responsibility to teach them about their language and culture – not the rest of us. They need to become bi-lingual because English is vital for them if they are to get ahead in the real World.

    It’s more than Maori being cloaked in their culture. We are all required to be, and often you cannot get a job without committing to ‘Te Ao Maori’. The question is, is it legal to impose belief in certain cultural ‘values’ on to your employees? At what point does our own right to be treated equally regardless of ‘race, colour, or creed’ start to be denied to us by the strictures of employers? Surely we are employed to carry out tasks & duties, not to have belief systems imposed upon us!
    Up until a year ago I had never heard of ‘Te Ao Maori’. I had never heard of non-Maori New Zealanders being described as ‘Tangata Tiriti’ either, and we are now at the point of having our very identity imposed upon us by others, and defined by the extremely narrow reference point of ‘Te Tiriti’. I was previously a proud New Zealander, now – within a very short space of time- I am told that I am only here because of ‘Te Tiriti’, that I am a colonist, that I am a ‘pakeha’ (Maori for ‘stranger’), that my people are ‘Tangata Tiriti’.
    Who else is stunned that in a very short space of time we have had our identities stripped from us, and new ones imposed? Where is this river of new terminology flowing from, and by whose authority is it imposed? Who voted for any of this? Who consented to any of this? How do we know so-called ‘Te Ao Maori’ is not something invented by academics and activists, and why are we now hostage to it?

With Chloe becoming leader, the left will be in self-destruct mode! She will NEVER be PM. We have seen the failed experiment in the last six years with another person. Sure, she will appeal to extreme left Labour voters. Labour Party will counter by becoming the new Green Party or move to the middle. Grass root members in both parties will become disillusioned. Majority in NZ will not trust a coalition with a dominant extreme Green. At best zero-sum game. It will be an all out war between the two parties. Can’t wait to watch the self-destruction and cry of gender-bullying.

  I think the green party should rename themselves. 30 years ago they predominantly stood for environmental issues and that was their core. While they only ever got a couple of seats they stood strong in their environmental policies and that was all. Fast forward to today and they are getting too far into social engineering and have moved away from solely working towards the environment. The greens need to go back to chaining themselves to trees and lying in front of bulldozers and stop with their crazy ideas of how we should all live our lives before they get voted into history.

Stuff report Luxons sister works for a tobacco company which is still a legal product in NZ and every other country in the world. She is a mature woman who has forged a career in business herself. Luxon is a mature man who have chosen a different career and now leads a country. His sister did not choose his career but now the media make the inference she has an influence on his thinking.

The same media who can’t seem to make a connection between Peeni Henare, his wife, her company and the Ministry of Health or Mahuta and her husband and John Tamihere and his son in law and funding for TPM and I have no doubt many other connections which are yet to revealed in the last government.

The media’s unequivocal support and blind eye to all smelly things on the left and deliberate campaigns against all things on the right is going to put off good people taking a role in politics on the right for fear of the campaign of hate directed at them. Which of course is one of the aims of the media. Slugs.

    We wondered if there’s any reason why you can’t just ignore the government’s changes to recent smoking policy put forward by the last government.
    
    And instead, put forward a bill that essentially applies all that policy just to Maori. That way as Maori leaders you’re looking after us in terms of smoking’s uneven impact on our health. For example, cigarettes won’t be able to be sold to Maori whose birthday is after a specified date, etc.

  Thomas Plumbing in Kapiti installed half of the area’s water meters and is responsible for much of the work on the local gas infrastructure. Plumbing firms like that would be well qualified to do waterworks leak detection and repair. Most leaks would be small pipe leaks anyway and hence within the scope of the average plumber.

I see Luxon went in hard and asked iwi leaders where they were with young Maori being so absent from school! Yes I am so glad to hear this, all iwi ‘leaders’ bloody care about is having Maori department names while their people die more on waiting lists, have worse education outcomes etc. Luxon is absolutely right, where were these iwi when Labour was making everything worse for their people? Now they fire up, before this government has even had a chance to do anything. Maori are so let down by these people who supposedly represent them.

Chloé Swarbrick speaks of her desire for the Greens to increase their representation on city and regional councils. Could someone explain to me the logic of the National Party in not standing candidates in local body politics. I realise there have been proxy organisations such Citizens and Ratepayers, but given the Greens’ effectiveness recently at local body level don’t we deserve a more clear-cut National alternative. Why does National shy away from local body politics when the Greens and Labour don’t?

        Perhaps MMP is part of the problem. Ambitious young National supporters often made their name in local-body politics.
        
        Now the career path seems to be: social science, law, or communications qualification; work for the party or Parliament for nothing or bugger all as an intern; get on the party list …
        
        A second factor may be poor coverage of local body affairs as traditional media fade away.
        
        Less scrutiny and interest from the public, plus fewer traditional, ambitious mainstream politicians, together leave local body politics to activist minorities, often Green, or to indigenous groups, or to various wacko’s.

  I guess the main reason is that Councils are the haven of those who delight in making it difficult to get things done. They are even worse than Governments in that when Councils announce, for example that in the case of Clutha where the Mayor has said that rates are going to rise at 25% for the next 3 years, nothing substantive can be done. Council staff rule the roost and even when they are ferreted out for mis-deeds, they simply slope off elsewhere and continue their behaviour.
  
  Anyone that wants change, less endless reasons to say “no”, would be frustrated within days. So Councils are the haven for the hard lefties, the bullies, the suckers on the teats.

  Politics and governance are inherently active pursuits, not passive. When one of your principle positions is “hands off” and you think that small government is better, while the other side has the opposite view, you’re going to lose ground constantly. We are where we are not only because the left are more active and aggressive governors, but because the right are inactive and passive.
  
  For a party allegedly with a worldview wherein you’d expect a preference for localism and autonomy and a disfavour of central government, they seem to not focus at all on the former, and only the latter.

  Because they’re playing catch-up. Years of neglect from National at addressing the threat from the Left, and indeed their complicity with and enabling of those forces within and without their own ranks, means that now the neo-Marxist agenda is clear they have to mount a rearguard action, and even so they appear to be mounting it weakly only stiffened by ACT and NZF.
  
  A concerted effort to get candidates into local bodies I suspect is way down the priority list, that is if they even understand the threat. Consider that for decades Labour has been mostly in control of the large urban councils and what Swarbrick is calling for is nothing more than a power transfer from the Left to the hard Left, which is why there was a loud demand for lowering the local voting age to 16.
  
  The best thing the coalition can do is reform the Local Government Act restricting the activities of councils back to core services instead of the property speculation and commercial activity they have become involved in in recent decades fuelling the large debts and rates increases that are now proving such a terrible burden for people.

    If Seymour was doing his job as Regulation Minister, we would hear about stopping the planned expansion of control, red tape and bureaucracy by MPI in a current survey out seeking greater control/management of small food production businesses! But we are hearing feathers. This is happening while he is pursuing his Treaty Principles bill.

      I never suggested or even intimated that ACT should stand in local elections. The question from Nukuleka was directed specifically at National, and that was the context of my reply.
      
      Further, ACT and NZF giving some backbone around many issues is the truth, and that’s why those policies are stipulated in the coalition agreements, and those stipulations relate to mostly central government not local.
      
      My point, which you have not taken at all, is that National has enough on its plate playing catch-up with the result of a couple of decades of neglect towards these cultural and social issues, that a concerted effort in local elections is probably not even on their radar.
      
      Nothing wrong with a rant unless it’s out of context and abusive, which yours was.

    I think that’s partly the reason gween candidates have done so well in local body politics recently – low voter turnout, in fact, very low turnout. The result being they garner sufficient votes via their established social media followers. Not many are needed to beat your competition. What’s needed is a major campaign next time getting all those disenfranchised by incumbents to vote for someone else.

  This was one of the founding principles of the National Party and has held during the 88 years of National’s existence. The Party reviewed this several years ago and decided it was more important to concentrate on Parliamentary elections and not be distracted by involvement in local politics. To put it bluntly – which is preferable following the last election – a National led government (with higher left wing representation in local bodies) or a Labour led government (with higher centre-right representation).

I made an enquiry for someone the other day who was waiting for probate to be granted. Told it is likely to be 5 months, when it should be no more than 2. The grab-bag of excuses include lots of deaths, covid, lack of staff and the grand-daddy of them all is the High Court had to close because of the occupation!! Remind me when that was again!!

Amongst the raft of “Briefings to Minister’s” released this week was one to the Minister of Communications and Media “Media component of your portfolio”.

Anyone who like me as an interest in the NZ media will possibly find it worth reading. Of particular this from page 6:
“As audiences have moved online, advertising revenue has decreased. TVNZ reported a decline in profits from $59.2m in 2020/21 to $1.7m in 2022/23 and is forecasting a loss of $15.6m for 2023/24. NZME reported a 76 percent profit drop for the second half of 2022 and MediaWorks reported a $9.7m loss for 2022. Warner Bros. Discovery has reported losses of $34m in New Zealand in 2022”.

It is also noted in the briefing what many here at Kiwiblog will already know that “As New Zealand audiences of all demographics increasingly access content online, they are consuming less media from traditional sources such as radio, newspapers, and television”.

Not sure the legacy media (MSM) have realised that the poor quality of their content is a major issue. For example, much of what is on TV1 is rubbish, starting with their biased news coverage.

Appendix 1 is a briefing about monitoring of funding and Crown Entities. I am of the firm view that of these TVNZ should be sold off.

  That sentence sums up the media problem.
  If I can access a piece of news or an article whenever I feel like it, does anyone think I’m going to sit around waiting for the 6 o’clock news.

    It is time this nation started saying “how are the billions in tax free assets held in Maori entities helping Maori? Why do the calls of by Maori for Maori not include getting kids to schools, and kids vaccinated against childhood diseases?”

But who was part of the government that stopped oil and gas in its tracks in 2017? Oh, that’s right Shane Jones!

I realise it was the [Mod – use correct names] call, but not only did NZF put her there they then continued to support her for the first 3 years.

If Shane Jones was truely looking after the country, him and his chameleon mate would have pulled the pin immediately. Imagine how much better off this country would be if Shane Jones (and Winston) had grown a pair back in 2017.

Never trust any of these buggers. They are all a pack of flea bags, they just vary in the quantity of fleas they carry.

National want to lift the minimum wage to $23.15 per hour so that anybody on the minimum wage working a 40 hour week will be considered a high income worker. ($23.15 x 40 hours x 52 weeks = $48,152.)

As signs point to the 2024 presidential election being a repeat of the 2020 race between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, Biden holds a lead over Trump 50 – 44 percent among registered voters in a hypothetical general election matchup, according to a Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea-ack) University national poll of registered voters released today.

In Quinnipiac University’s December 20, 2023 poll, the same hypothetical 2024 general election matchup was ‘too close to call’ as President Biden received 47 percent support and former President Trump received 46 percent support.

In today’s poll, Democrats (96 – 2 percent) and independents (52 – 40 percent) support Biden, while Republicans (91 – 7 percent) support Trump.

  I do not know why people continue to refer to national polls for the US Presidential election when that is determined on a state-by-state basis in the Electoral College, making state polls the key metric, and especially those in the swing states.
  
  Even then it’s a question of the GOP machines vs the Democrat machines and which is best at churning out voters. My bet is on the Democrat machines.

    Because they don’t have much idea about how federalism works, which in my experience is at the root of much uninformed and often silly discussion about the US.
    
    I agree the Dem machine will probably work better than the GOP’s but you can only get out the vote to those who wish to vote your way. Disaffection is high in the US as it was before our recent election. It could be another 2016 for Trump or better. At some point the swing is too great for any machine to claw back.
    
    It’s the legal and media shenanigans employed to hobble Trump’s candidacy that will be more telling.

    The problem is the way NZ First have set up their security certificates on their domain name. http://www.nzfirst.nz is associated with a certificate that validates the name but they haven’t done the necessary for nzfirst.nz. So Firefox trusts the first but warns about the second.

Question !
How do Pacifica people fit into the Treaty of Waitangi, and all its so called judgements, and money accepted from within its judgements ?
It does not appear that they are included in Waitangi anything, and yet without a doubt Maori are Pacifica people, more recently from what we know as the Cook Islands.

The media have been slow to call out the economic and social disadvantages of co governance. Nothing has changed. National need to go on the offensive and call out unbalanced journalism.     The media can only ever see one side of an issue.
    
    For example, they seem to believe that there were no downsides of the vaxx and the mandates to weigh against the benefits in which they so eagerly believed.
    
    They also bemoan the cost of putting crims in prison, but they never take account of the cost of not putting crims in prison.
    
    They also blindly accept that banning oil and gas exploration and production is a good thing, without considering the reality that the ban means we need, and will continue to need, to import them instead.
    
    Likewise with agricultural emissions. Getting rid of sheep and cattle is great because it means lower emissions, except that what it really means is that sheep and cattle farming will be sent elsewhere to higher emitting countries.

3 List every relative dead and alive and all their jobs, friends, clubs and associations and declare them to the Cabinet Office. Include in-laws. Don’t worry if they cheated on benefits, murdered someone, went to jail for fraud, cheated on their spouses or shoplifted.
4 Face the fact that the media hate you so don’t walk into their childish traps or try to make friends with them. Consult with Peter Dunne if you need further advice on this.
5 Decide the most important policies you are going to deliver and stand up for them. Treat every day with the media as high noon and don’t be outgunned.

I have just witnessed an orchestrated attack on the new government by onenews. After the news about the USA attacks in the Middle East it was a litany of attacks on the government. First Waitangi with the opposition parties raising the heat, then an attack on the change proposed for smoking, then an attack why the government has yet to reduce the age of free bowel screening. I will nail my colours to the mast as life long labour supporter I voted anybody but Labour in the election. So I am no strong supporter of the coalition but I am sick and tired of the beat up this government is getting from the media. It is orchestrated it is disgusting and the leaks from the public servants are not helping. I have never seen such a one sided media its non democratic the fourth estate is a joke.

Turns out, a study finds there’s a growing demand for te ao Mari in the workplace. Well there would be after the last 6 years has made it a requirement for anyone employed or any company connected with any number of the more than 1,500 government agencies and quangos and their nearly 500,000 employees.

There is almost zero productivity from all this in any workplace, zero difference to the bottom line except added expense. A MASSIVE gravy train for those who continue to forcibly embed this nonsense in agencies.

Given her position representing the Crown, thought it inappropiate for her to be seen smiling and clearly amused by the warning from Dame Nadia Glavish, for the government to tread carefully. Labour is pledging its support to Ngāpuhi and wider te ao Māori as the iwi seeks to oppose some of the Government’s agenda on Māori issues.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins and his MPs made the commitment alongside warnings of “spiders” and a “den of lions” approaching – a reference to the Government’s scheduled arrival at the marae on Monday.
