Sacrosanct
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Finance Minister Nicola Willis and ACT leader David Seymour have confirmed they will be in attendance on Friday for a presentation from the forum.

[Iwi Chairs Forum co-chair Pou Tangata, Rahui Papa] said the Iwi Chairs Forum would have to navigate how to respond to ACT’s proposed Treaty Principles Bill, especially when Māori viewed Te Tiriti to be sacrosanct *

I do hope that David Seymour asks ”When Māori view Te Tiriti to be sacrosanct”, to which sacrosanct version do they refer? The original. or something in the 1980s or the expanded view of the past Labour six years, so how sacrosanct is the original ?

Like as I have written before – probably to the extent of voting some readers – when the United States Supreme Court confirmed abortion was not in the US Constitution – to an utter furore in the US as individual states have to deal with it at there legislative level and here “journalists” asked Luxon what they hoped would be embarrassing ‘gotcha’ questions to a Christian, but not is what in the original actually sacrosanct Treaty of Waitangi – until David Seymour has the courage to do that.

And that seems to be all that he is doing. But of course it a later version of the ’sacrosanct’ Treaty expands the rights they have, of course some iwi will be a little upset.

Mana o te Wai Statements are not in the original, nor specifically, with any great emphasis, respect of the ancestors which although inherit in most every other civilisation, recently saw Pete Ellis’ reputation rights extent beyond death and tikanga written into New Zealand law.

  I’m impressed that Radio NZ followed up until they got answers though.
  
  The Health Ministry’s idea of an “integrity week” to “better educate staff on conflicts of interest and integrity in general” is wonderful and I’d like to see it adopted throughout the public service and promoted to the public, complete with specially marked police cars and pedestrian crossings.
  Perhaps, like Maori Language Week, it could eventually become a permanent feature, even included in job advertisements.

        One of my customers were having some “integrity issues”, almost all of it in their relatively small Indian offices. Not surprising since bribery etc are rife there. You can hardly buy lunch without bribing someone.
        
        But they couldn’t line up their Indians and say “Now listen here (inaudibles), You can’t do this anymore. It makes the American boss feel embarrassed.”
        
        Nope. That would be racist.
        
        Instead they developed an “ethics” programme with an online class including tests etc. This was then forced on every one of their 12,000 employees around the world.
        
        I doubt it was successful, but at least the American boss can sleep peacefully knowing they’ve ticked the box and it won’t come back to bite him.

    Oh for the never ending criticism by the so called Labour Party Media.
    Every new Government needs a few weeks to settle, except the media, who will take every day and week to try and make the Government unable to exist, as they did not vote demographically for this Coalition Government, the first under the stupid MMP.

    The people behind this are the Labour Pardy types ( particularly but certainly not exclusively) who used their elected positions to change our constitution by stealth to benefit one race only , justified by any and all manner of spurious claims about inequity , historical wrongs , systemic this that and the other .
    
    In order to reinforce this they also literally bought off one of the few democratic institutions in the country that might have ( had they been inclined) challenged this nonsense , the so called fourth estate.
    
    The only answer to this is a binding referendum as per David Seymour and the Act party .
    
    NB ;who opposes that .They too a big part of the problem.

You can’t possibly speak for “the rest of NZ’ and nor can I – but I think it’s safe to bet that they are sick to the back teeth of this revisionist Treaty of Waitangi nonsense and are very annoyed at the inordinate amount of time that is wasted on it. Time that could be spent on other things, such as creating the economic conditions that will facilitate people being able to pay for their groceries.

        Any threats of conflict or violence (of which there have been many) and the average NZer will shut up and back down rather than be the target of abuse and vitriol – let alone real violence.
        
        The threats are not going to go away. They will only increase.
        
        It looks almost inevitable that the only way this can go is a continued escalation until reasonable people do throw their toys out of the cot.
        
        Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later because if it is left too late it can only lead to civil war.

  In NZ many of these would just be hobby farmers. You can make a “career” out of it in Europe due to subsidies and protectionism.

    I’m against subsidies of all kinds, however driving people bankrupt with regulations and removing subsidies without a viable progression to a subsidy free environment is evil.
    The European farmers are my competitors, but I’m not going to rejoice in the EU screwing them over, because the same tyrannies are coming this way under the guise of market access. Non tariff barriers.

        No, obviously not ALL the farms, but a large number of European farms only exist because of a massive subsidies.
        
        For example in France the median dairy herd size is 78 cows. In West Germany it is only 48 cows. In NZ it is over 400.
        
        If/when subsidies go away many of those farms will go out of business and maybe consolidate into larger herds.

        This has been happening for years in NZ. A lot of dairy farms have gone – 40 I believe in a year in Northland. Many of these are like ours – 70-100ha (175-250acres) running say 200 cows. This is not economic. We have some very clever family friends farming in the UK, and before Brexit, they were quite open about farming the EU subsidies as a significant part of the income. They got paid to leave a field empty up to a certain date, with the thinking that it was then to late to plant. In their case, the next day, put in a late crop on the basis of if the yield was poorer, it was free money – the income was guaranteed anyway.
        Our farm was 83 acres when my parents bought it in 1975, say 60 cows. All the farms were that size as returned serviceman’s blocks. We bought half the farm next door, where the retiring owner had raised 6 kids and made a good living. Fast forward a few years, 140 cows, and then buying up some more neighbours land to our current 100 ha (70 ha effective) plus another 20 ha leased as silage and hay growing and off farm grazing for young stock and dry cows. I have a day job to put food on the table. We would need to double in size to be economic. There would also need to be plant investment – a new cowshed is around $1.5m for example.

    Now the subsidies are going but the Taxes remain.

  After WW2 Europe and the UK set out to have food and energy self-sufficiency. Both sides learnt the lesson of the sub war in the Altantic. They accept the resulting policy results in inefficient farming and is very costly.
  
  The green left have successfully got rid of coal-based energy self-sufficiency and now turn to getting rid of Europe’s food self-sufficiency.
  
  The left want to reduce food production; I would say the more noble goal should be to lower the cost of food (and energy) for the population. Having said that, lowering the cost of food by encouraging farming to be more efficient is still a very divisive policy in the EU. But there must be a way to have a sensible debate, over perhaps many years, without unilateral farm closures.

      Bullshit. Safety teams were prevented from entering the mines by NCB. The miners knew the pits would flood or burn if not maintained. Thatcher was determined to crush the union no matter the cost to the country. Bugging the union offices, starving the families, violating their rights to peaceful protest and using the police to beat them up.

Come to that the Davis Cup was once one of the highlights of the Tennis year.

    In the same time period as Parun, Fairlie, Lewis etc there were athletes like Dixon, Mary Decker, Dick Quax etc.
    We used to go to Newtown Park in the evening to watch them compete.
    Great times.
    Not to mention the huge crowds at Athletic Park for the Wellington Club Rugby games with heaps of then-current All Blacks.

Yes she now sits in NZs Parliament under the Hamas Terrorist supporting so called Green Party .
She used a phrase “Ram Raiding” in her speech .
The real “Ram Raiding” was when she was a Wellington City Councilor and twice voted to financially “Ram Raid” Wellingtons’ Ratepayers
to the tune of a $250,000,000 for bicycle tracks .
How is that for a Legacy which seemed to be overlooked when she won the seat of Wellington Central .Wonder what part of financial ‘Ram Raiding” against Wellington Ratepayers has she conveniently forgotten when she used the phrase in her recent speech in Parliament .Go Figure.

  The real question is whether the Wellington ratepayers have learned yet or will they just bend over and take another ramming?
  
  I suspect that a very large % of Wellington ratepayers think they are doing the right thing and that all the pipes and other boring stuff should be paid for by central government (hence the high support for 3 waters).

The Ministry of Social Development warned in its briefing document to the incoming ministers that working-age benefit numbers were forecast to rise from 351,700 in June last year to around 382,900 in January 2025.

While benefits and associated financial support obviously do cost New Zealand, at the moment seems only carrots and no sticks. Working age doesn’t mean able to work, but heading for 400k has to include plenty who can work.

Work for the dole is one option, with the additional benefit of fewer idle hands. Australia has (maybe had, not sure) a requirement to do 3 days voluntary work to continue to qualify. One of my family members unemployed time to time worked at a local council plant nursery. Another had admin experience and helped out at a couple of local charities.

  There won’t be an operational nuclear reactor in NZ within the next 40 years. SMR technology has yet to be proven in the first production reactor. NZ is hardly going to be an early adopter.
  
  For NZ any new electric power in the coming decades is going to be hydro, geothermal, wind and solar.

      The thing is that this is NZ not those other countries and our system is relatively unique in having significant levels of clean dispatchable generation in the form of hydro and geothermal, with growth potential in the latter.
      
      With existing technologies we can meet our foreseeable growth demand for clean electricity without things like offshore wind or nuclear.
      
      Just need to accept we might only be 95% pure, and forget these silly notions of 100% renewable electricity.

      That’s a very weak non-argument.
      
      I could counter with “if someone had told you in 1908 that over 110 years later car engine efficiency would only double, would you believe them?”
      
      The Model T got about 15l per 100km. Modern cars around 7. Not much progress for over 100 years – most of it was a long time ago.
      
      Extrapolating like you have is a broken way to think of things because it makes the assumption that the leaps and bounds of one technology should be seen in another technology because of human ingenuity.
      
      The reason electronics has been able to improve by a factor of well over 10,000 in the last 40 years or so is that the constraints were not the laws of physics. However those laws of physics have become the constraints in the last 5 to 10 years which is why that rate of growth has slowed down significantly. Computer speeds have largely flattened out.
      
      In thermal engines (car engines, steam engines and nukes) it is a very different picture. These have been pretty much hard up against the laws of physics for the last 50 years and pretty much close to maximum possible efficiency for decades before that.
      
      The same is true of chemical processes like batteries and food production.
      
      If food efficiency had increased like electronics (over 10,000x) then you could eat one plate of food and you’d never have to eat again in your whole life. An area the size of the Canterbury plains could feed the whole world’s population many times over.
      
      That is why pretty much nobody is using a phone or computer that is over 10 years old, but we’re still using 40+ year old power stations.
      
      In the 1960s we all KNEW, with absolute certainty, that by 2000 we’d be using nuclear powered flying cars to visit the moon. Yet here we are 20+ years later and no flying car, let alone to the moon.

    SMRs are still a pipe dream, but that does not mean larger reactors are not viable. Although they have been massively hyped, SMRs are a bad idea for large (national) scale generation.
    
    Why is that? Well SMRs are small. Up to around 70MW. You need around 50 of them to replace a large coal power station. Dealing with lots of small reactors is fiddly. It is much easier to work with a few larger reactors (1000MW+).
    
    In South Africa, with all its energy woes, it has been the Koeberg nukes near Cape Town that have been the most reliable, and cleanest, of the power stations over the last 40-odd years. Of course that clean visage does have a dirty little secret in the form of the waste stream which is generally not visible to the outside world.
    
    The main reasons Koeberg have been reliable are twofold:
    1) Nukes are generally reliable the world over, but so are thermal stations.
    2) In South Africa: Nukes are controlled by tighter regulation. This has forced them to maintain the nukes properly while coal stations have been neglected to an extent that can be considered official sabotage.
    
    Wind and solar do not really add to the generation capability because they need back up. In other words if you want 1000MW of dependable power you won’t get it from 1000MW of solar or wind. You will still need to build 1000MW of coal or other generation. This makes building solar or wind generation more expensive than any other.
    
    The only way solar and wind can really help in NZ is to take load off the hydro when the sun is shining, thus allowing the hydro levels to be kept higher for when they are needed. The solar and wind can extend the hydro – not add generation.
    
    One of the biggest failings in energy policy is failing to understand that different parts of the world have different energy needs and different resource profiles.
    
    In USA solar makes a lot of sense because a lot of energy goes into airconditioning in summer. When the sun is shining the aircon demands go up. Good match.
    
    In NZ our peak demand is around 7pm in winter. Exactly when the sun is shining least.

      Also of relevance is that we have around 6 weeks of storage in our hydro lakes in NZ. Norway has 6 years worth – which gives them alot of options.
      
      So yes, wind/solar can help maintain lake levels but nowhere near enough that we won’t still need Huntly or it’s replacement.

        What is amazing is that we have about 810 mw from wind. It is usually less than 200 mw.

    I agree Wayne. 40 years would be a minimum with the anti-nuclear wanker’s mindset in NZ.
    Wind and solar is a myth, with turbine blades and solar panels having to be replaced every 20 to 30 years.
    Geothermal? Well there is only so much you can drag out. Along with that same line of geothermal, a place in Alaska set up a great idea at Chena Hot Springs Spar and resort.
    They use the 73C degree water to generate power. All done with refrigerant. Refrigerant boils to gas, runs the turbine and then is condensed. I did notice a lot of 9kg gas bottles ready to be refilled in the lower 48.
    It works, they are self sufficient. Two large heat transfer containers that run 4 turbines.
    Turbine gears are about 60mm by 100 long, and travel at some crazy speed (19,000 RPM?)
    Can’t see geothermal working in NZ. Didn’t Rotorua ban steam bore a few decades back because too many meant pressure loss and no hot water?
    That leave hydro. Where? The Greens and the save the dickie birds will fuck that idea.

        What was worrying is all of the 9kg refrigerant gas bottles (full and empty) That gas must go into the atmosphere.
        The radiator idea has been in my head for 40 years. Making it work was the hard bit.

    The nuclear weapon argument is as stupid as saying that cars shouldn’t be made out of steel because guns are made out of steel.
    
    A correctly operating nuclear reactor releases less radiation than a coal or other thermal station. Nukes are clean and generally good neighbours.
    
    I lived for many years in Cape Town – 30 km away from the 2GW Koeberg power station. I even helped doing some research diving at the power station itself. The power station is much less invasive on its surroundings than the far smaller Huntly power station is.
    
    But the bugger with nukes is that everything they touch turns into at least low level waste which makes for an annoying waste stream to deal with. When you finally do get rid of the thing it takes many decades to deconstruct and dispose of carefully – while thermal power stations are just treated as scrap metal.

        False flags are a well-established phenomenon (e.g. the sinking of the USS Maine, the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the Lavon Affair, probably 9/11, and countless others we probably never suspect), so your personal incredulity is not an argument against the reality of false flag attacks.
        
        But just like doing acts oneself and misattributing them, knowing in advance and letting something happen from which to benefit is as old a tactic as any.
        
        What better pretext to invade Gaza, kill thousands of Gazans and/or force them to flee, and bomb the area flat so that they can never practically return and you can absorb the territory than a “surprise attack” by Hamas? Then there’s the flow-on secondary pretexts of provoking engagement with long-term rivals in the area (e.g. Lebanon or Iran).
        
        While “cui bono” is not an infallible principle, who benefits and who loses is always a good criterion for assigning reasons for actions (or for inactions, as the case may be).

      He poured some acid into the water where people were trespassing. That acid is so dilute that it would have had zero effect on those people beyond maybe stinging their eyes a bit.
      
      He just poured it in to frighten them and they were frightened by their ignorance. ie. it was NOT an attack and it could NOT have injured them.
      
      It would have been far more harmful to those people to spray them with vinegar (also an acid).
      
      No, the acid used for disfigurement purposes will likely be concentrated sulphuric, nitric or hydrochoric acid which are relatively easy to get at low prices. Those can literally destroy flesh in minutes, especially more sensitive areas – like eyes.
      
      You are correct though that it is not a new idea. Been going on for at least 150 years.

      It was mentioned in a Sherlock Holmes story “The Adventure of the Illustrious Client”. that was fiction and 1924 but it seems that the advent of industrial chemicals gave people a very vicious weapon.
      It’s usually used in the context of a failed love affair and not always used by men against women.

They might never ditch those and are consigned to history.
But I am thinking that if they did – they would be a block with the Nats, ACT and NZF that believes the special people are not special.

Mike Hosking’s interview with Casey Costello this morning, free of Guyon Espiner’s doom-burdened voice, is illuminating. I don’t know her but she sounds truthful and genuine. Hosking is a master of scenting duplicity and fudging and found none.
Ayesha Verrall and Labour need to stop playing their nasty political games and start planning how they are going to answer the dire information in briefings to the new government. It’s hardly an exaggeration to say that Labour managed to make a hash of everything. Aided and abetted by RNZ and other media who also appallingly failed the public of NZ.

    Last year, around this time, I gave off an odor that only I noticed. Either that or everyone else, including doctors were too polite.
    It transpired I had cancer and once the chemo started the smell disappeared along with a plethora of other symptoms except about 10kg, which suits me just fine!

      I’ve had firsthand reports from nurses about noticing a particular smell when certain patients are in the last stages of a terminal illness.
      In many ways it would be unusual if it WASN’T the case. Breakdown of normal organ function would produce different waste products.
      Like most things, it’s a case of All, Some, or None. That some people could smell some diseases doesn’t mean that no people can smell any disease.

But here we have a typical/hypocritical leftie Labour/public servant/RNZ/TVNZ/Newshub hit job on Casey Costello implying she wanted to scrap the tobacco excise tax and that she must be in the pockets of big tobacco.

However as Ms Costello said to Hosking this morning, she was seeking a wide range of views (including preventing “big tobacco” at one extreme), confirmed she wasn’t the author of the talking points (staffers were by collating various NZF policies) and that she had no association with “big tobacco”.

So how despicable of Labour and their sympathetic MSM lapdogs. Is it time for heads to roll at the state broadcasters (Boards or management or journos etc)?

From reading the UK media if this had happened at the state funded BBC heads would roll, apologies issued and practices tightened up to prevent further instances of biased reporting.

Meanwhile in “Aotearoa” the leftist political/media “corruption” continues without any consequences …

  It is incomprehensible that Casey Costello doesn’t know where the tobacco tax freeze briefing paper in question came from, while a Minister of Health should not care that the tobacco industry is on its knees.
  
  It’s a shame, as the proposal represents new thinking and is worth considering on its merits.

  The right thing is to set time limits on benefits, and then cancel them if not in education or employment or volunteer work.
  Multi-generational welfare, idleness, race-politics and excuse making, cuddling crims and exalting Maori has created a large population of feral oxygen thieves.
  Offering $50,000 to long term beneficiaries to be sterilised would be a huge long term saving for NZ and reduce overall misery.

Ex RNZ, a survey for the Infrastructure Commission suggests support for charging for water usage is similar to usage charging for electricity. The conclusion glossed over the key fact that (copious quantities of free) water falls from the sky while electricity needs to be generated, ie the cost of water is entirely bound up in the infrastructure.

My view is that users benefit equally from water infrastructure and therefore fixed charges are appropriate for water supply.

My conclusion is that the Infrastructure Commission is shilling for work on behalf of its members.

  Similarly the water that falls from the sky fills up lakes and propels turbines that generates electricity that is reticulated by way of a network of cables to the end users.

I remember when

Last week I had the experience of driving on Waka Kotahi’s attempt at a zero emissions/deaths road.
I marvelled at the magnificent roundabouts, the raised traffic islands, 70 kph speed limit and the safety fence stretching for kilometres.
Of course, it isn’t totally finished yet.
I am certained they will eventually manage to remove the 70 kph passing lane approaching the Masterton end.
Having installed the above features, they then have to paint a lane down the middle so that you know where to drive.
My experience was enhanced by a water truck, spraying the road because of the heat, followed by two illuminated sign trucks, so that most of Masterton to Clareville was travelled at less than 30 kph.
A monument to ‘overkill’, expense no problem (or the time taken to complete).

  I remember when – yes the road between Masterton and Carterton used to be able to be driven at 100 km/h. Now it’s at 80 km/h. It’s taken probably two years of roadworks at 30 km/h. But as you rightly point out, the road is not finished yet and can only be travelled at 70 km/h at best.
  
  One can only hope that the new New Zealand transport agency pulls its finger out and makes better roads and restores speed limits to 100 km/h in the very near future. That the road was slow was seemingly part of the old government’s plan to reduce car travel?
  
  The former MP for the Wairarapa has now lost his electorate and rightly so. The complete failure to provide decent roads and the lowering of the speed limit to 80 km/h all the way from Masterton to Featherston. The former member of Parliament for the Wairarapa should lose his seat based on that alone.

  “Green” products, particularly solar panels, need massive amounts of electricity to make. Where is that going to come from? It can’t come from the solar panels because:
  A) they are not yet made
  B) They are unreliable and can’t sustain energy intensive manufacturing.
  
  That means to make all these massive numbers of green products first means building a bunch of reliable and powerful coal stations, then running them 24/7!

  Achieving weapons grade enrichment is not an all or nothing point.
  
  Sure you achieve that level of enrichment, but so what? You maybe only have a teenie fraction of a gram of material.
  
  To actually make a bomb needs a few kg of material. That means a lot more than just “achieving weapons grade enrichment”. It also means industrializing the process which is challenging.
  
  Then enough to build a single bomb is not enough by itself. You need to do a bunch of testing and experimentation.
  
  To appreciate the scale of these operations it is instructive to look at Oak Ridge -where the USA WW2 Manhattan project enrichment happened.
  
  They had over 10,000 people involved. They built enormous factories and a whole town to support it. They built power stations to power it all. Enormous effort.
  
  That was just for the enrichment. There were other, facilities, just as large, for bomb making and testing.
  
  It was such an effort that they’d have done a lot better putting those resources into more aircraft factories and building more proximity fuse shells. The nuclear bomb programme damaged the USA war effort far more than it helped.
  
  Now granted, things have moved on since then. Enrichment does not require building a whole town. Still, it is a mammoth effort – more than you can do in the garden shed.

    The march of technology has made 80 year old gas centrifugal uranium enrichment relatively easy these days, so long as no-one is trying to drop bombs on your facilities.
    
    The materials and controls used to be a challenge, but most of it is cheap off-the-shelf stuff these days, and the centrifuge tubes are pretty easy too with carbon-wrapped aluminum pressure vessels a well developed and easily transferable technology to high speed gas centrifuges.
    
    Even easier when you have workers whose health you don’t mind killing (like iran and kim jong un)

  Sometimes I think the councils deliberately create extra work and expenses.
  
  Close to here we have a busy intersection which has seen quite a bit of work in the last few years:
  * Dug up 5 years ago to make little traffic island things ( + repainting)
  * Dug up again about 4 years ago when fibre was put in the ground.
  * Dug up again about 2 years ago to add some more traffic lights.
  * Dug up a fortnight ago to resurface the road.
  
  They really need to add a right turning arrow to the traffic light. At least that shouldn’t need more digging.

  I always thought that women in parties such as gweens and mari that have a co-leader arrangement shot themselves in the foot. For centuries men have always had the top positions of power and leadership. Just when women finally get into top positions in the last few decades someone says “Hey … let’s have a co-leadership”, not realising that finally when women can lead they aren’t allowed to lead on their own. Mari party does this. It also implies you’re not wholly human if you’re just a man or just a woman or you can’t be deemed competent if you’re just a man leading or just a woman leading. Man sentenced. He stabbed a 26 year old stranger in the head and body 6 times and killed him. The sentence was reduced from Murder to Manslaughter because he was “psychotic”. He uses meth but wasn’t at the time of the stabbing.

Evidence of psychosis: ” “In the preceding weeks, the defendant’s wife had noticed changes in the defendant’s behaviour, including him not sleeping at night, not eating as much as normal, distancing himself from her and their baby, and exhibiting some paranoia,” the summary of facts states.

The 36-year-old Ōtāhuhu resident had awakened at 3am that day and left for work two hours early before quitting his job and going to see a counsellor, whom he confided to that “there was a voice in his head which made him feel overwhelmed”” And yelled where’s my kid when he killed the stranger.

Sentence. 5 1/2 years and he will have to serve just 40% of it.?!

“Because it was Timoti’s first offence, his risk of re-offending has been assessed as low, the judge also noted.”

So you enter a psychotic state that causes you to murder and NZ justice lets you off easy and calls it manslaughter because of your severe mental health . Shouldn’t you go to a mental health facility indefinitely until you can be helped. How can you have mental health causing psychosis and the judge say you are not a risk to the community because it’s only a one off?!!! Where was the psychiatrist. What was their diagnosis. If this man has Psychosis it could be schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression. Then he needs to be diagnosed as such and treated. It’s unlikely to just disappear because the judge said it only happened once.

Either there is a proper mental health assesment and sentencing to a mental health facility. Or he should own up to the full crime and weight of what he did.

Our country is broken.

Has anyone seen the balanced and impartial media interviews of Hipkins on Peeni Henare’s wife’s company’s contracts with Ministry of Health or the allegations Bryce Edward’s made about his government, or how Kelvin managed to triple the number of offenders on bail ?
