In the USA, Pittsburgh educators are concerned about African American children doing poorly at mathematics. They say that they have discovered the problem. The teaching of mathematics is racist.

All mathematics teachers will be attending training to encourage them to replace “oppressive practices in math instruction with practices that center the wellness of students of color and to provide opportunities for math departments and math teachers to grow their antiracist math praxis collaboratively in pedagogy and instruction.”.

I guarantee that there are public servants in the New Zealand Ministry of Education who think this is fantastic and would wheel out this here if they could get away with it.

It has a sinister side. Mathematics by definition does not have feelings. Along with physics, it is the most universal of disciplines. Having succeeded in corrupting disciplines such as history, the woke brigade are now coming for the mathematicians. 🤡

  That’s when they wanted us to hate the Great Satan of the White House ,George Bush , when he was blasting up the taliban etc

  BY: Yes this exists in NZ education and has -for a very long time.
  
  A month or so after arriving in NZ (in 1992) myself and a colleague flew from Auckland to Wellington for a 2 day training session on network architectures.
  There was also some education conference on at the time and dozens of out of town teachers were staying in the same hotel and we met up with some having a few drinks.
  
  The biggest concern of these teachers was that there was a push to Moari-ise maths and science but especially science. They said that every year this push got stronger and stronger and they doubted the forces pushing back would be able to resist for too long.
  
  And here we are with science – not just in schools but right through academia and government departments.
  
  Maths has gone down a similar road too but is probably a bit behind.
  
  The crazy part of this in USA is that it is now the black kids who are losing the most. White (and typically more well off) kids end up going to schools that still provide maths or attend summer schools teaching maths. Such options are less available to black (and typically poorer) blacks.
  The result: white kids get the maths teaching they need for university and black kids do not.
  
  So a programme designed to “help” black kids is actually making things worse for them. Sounds like a typical “progressive” programme in USA, NZ or anywhere else.

    Exactly. Lowest common denominator ‘fixes’ for chronic ethnic educational underperformance in education (looking at you NCEA) just exacerbate and magnify ultimate differential performance and lock in socio-economic class effects, as only kids with wealthier parents who give a shit get opportunity for real education to make up for what the education system would not provide.
    
    A 20 years ago I knew a really smart hard working and high achieving girl from a blue collar family. She spent a year in pre-med at universty, But ultimately found she could not out-compete all the doctors kids in the class who had been educationally pushed through school and had family support and mentoring to meet the very high bar for results. An effective class-barrier to entry in medicine.
    
    In the end it worked out for her – she’s now a top pharmaceutical sales exec in Switzerland, earning far more than she would have as a doctor without the shitty lifestyle sacrifices.

  Yeah, but I don’t think any of us would be particularly happy with questions such as “if a female slave can pick x tons of cotton per day, but only pick y tons per day while pregnant and for six months afterwards while nursing, and a slave infant can be sold for $z, is it more economically rational to keep the woman working at full capacity or rape her into continuous pregnancy?” and nor is it particularly sensitive to ask “how many video games can Peter buy with his $500/week pocket money?” of a child whose mother can barely feed her.
  
  It’s helpful to present maths as something that relates to real life, but if you’re going to do that, you should think about what you are assuming to be “real life” for students.

    There is a reliable red flag which indicates that the proponents of these ideas are ideologues. It is that they justify their ideas using language that is non sensical. Like this:
    
    “…oppressive practices in math instruction with practices that center the wellness of students of color and to provide opportunities for math departments and math teachers to grow their antiracist math praxis collaboratively in pedagogy and instruction.”
    
    When that is the best they have got you know it is rubbish. Let’s say in your job, you had a proposal for an investment for the company, or new product or service. Your manager asked you to write up a proposal. Then you used word soup waffle like the above. You would be out of a job.
    
    This was exactly the same red flag that revealed that Jacinda had no clue about just about any subject. Word soup incomprehensible waffle.

        sirk: Quite so…but that problem is not just confined to the left – academics claim that absolutely everything is hugely complicated so only they can explain it.
        
        Many years ago I remember asking Greg Newbold to explain why, if it wasn’t down the three strikes, violent crime in California had plummeted since the law came into force. His reply – entirely expected – was ” a complex mix of factors”
        
        I asked him to identify some of these “factors”. After much humming and harring he came up with “Many more womens’ refuges which prevented women being victims of spousal violence”.
        
        I thought that was fair enough, and asked him to name a couple more of these “complex factors”. He was unable to -and he was New Zealand’s leading criminologist at the time.

      I have no problem agreeing that ideas should be presented in clear and comprehensible language and that not everybody would be able to understand the example you’ve quoted (I think it needs the word “replace” or similar at the start).
      
      But the fact that somebody has described an idea poorly, reflects badly on them. Not necessarily on the idea. Any idea, no matter how simple and/or brilliant,can be described in unnecessarily convoluted language.

      Note also that they avoid punctuation. This is because punctuation links words in proper order, context, and meaning and helps avoid ambiguity .
      Ambiguity is their friend , it enables deniability.
      If you want to hear verbal word soup try thirty seconds of Chloe Swarbrick, it sounds like she has eliminated all words of fewer than six letters from her vocabulary leaving the rest, assisted by her rapid monotonal delivery, to try to convince the listener they are incapable of understanding what she is banging on about.

      The problem is not so much that the ideas are nonsensical as that they are insufficiently specific and substantiated for the careful reader to examine the factual claims and assumptions they make. They are more a sort of coded language for fellow believers.

  It is strange though, the more that schools become ‘Maori’, the more that maori are disengaging with education. Maybe maori find it boring?

      I had to have a chuckle to myself yesterday when I was in Hospital getting my two weekly top up of Chemotheropy and there was an elderly Maori Lady in the chair next me and she was approached by what I considered to be a person from the Maori Health Authority who proceeded to rabbit on to her in Te Reo. After a few seconds, the elderly Maori Lady responded with “I don’t speak or understand Te Reo.” The look on the inquisitor’s face was priceless as she slammed her notebook shut and stormed out of the room.
      I wonder how many more such incidents occur around NZ?

    If you read the link, this is actually the point of what they propose – there is no longer a right or wrong answer and expecting a poor little black kid to get a right or wrong answer is so incredibly racist. Sounds nuts but I think that’s what they are trying to promote!
    
    Anyone else ever note the absolute opaque language the left wing activists use when promoting this kind of stuff? Never, ever clear about what it is they actually propose to do. Suppose it wouldn’t exactly garner much support if they came out and said we’re going to teach your kids that math is racist (and if they are white they the most racist person ever and should be ashamed) and there is no such thing as a right and wrong – participation medals for everyone!

The Huffington Post provides an update on hostage negotiations.

The families of the estimated 240 people kidnapped in a vicious Hamas-led offensive inside Israel on Oct. 7 are one month into an ordeal of separation, uncertainty and fear. Many of them are increasingly worried that efforts to bring home their loved ones will be overlooked amid the global debate over Israel’s reprisal against Hamas, a campaign against the Palestinian militant group’s bases in Gaza that has killed more than 10,000 people so far.

Only a handful of hostages have been rescued through diplomatic channels, and just one hostage has been rescued militarily to date.

Many advocates for the hostages as well as officials involved in conversations about their fate say American involvement is vital because of questions about how heavily Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is prioritizing their release relative to other goals, such as dealing a decisive blow to Hamas.

“Our administration is very focused on this, and I think they’ve been doing a really good job, including in their outreach to the families and their internal efforts to try and push other actors to play a helpful role. The Israelis have been more difficult: I think Netanyahu has written off the hostages,” a Senate aide told HuffPost, describing the Israeli leader as “unwilling to make any kind of concessions.”

The Guardian reports that

Netanyahu rejected a deal for a five-day ceasefire with Palestinian militant groups in Gaza in return for the release of some of the hostages held in the territory early in the war.

According to three sources familiar with the talks, the original deal on the table involved freeing children, women and elderly and sick people in exchange for a five-day ceasefire, but the Israeli government turned this down and demonstrated its rejection with the launch of the ground offensive.

In must be a beyond frustrating for the hostages and their families to know that Netanyahu and Hamas aren’t able to make compromises to secure their release. In the meantime Israel continues to bomb Gaza, where hostages are being held.

  Any concessions with regard to hostages will ensure more hostages are taken in future – rewarding Hamas with any concessions will only ensure that they are used as bargaining chips forever, condemning them to long lives as tortured captives. Israel are effectively saying they are to all intents and purposes dead – not rewarding Hamas for taking them, while working to get them back if possible, and that is the only rational approach they can take.

    Hamas were only going to release only 12 of the 240 held and wanted a five day ceasefire in exchange
    That means a total of 100 days of ceasefire to get all 240 back
    Half were Americans too.
    Of course Hizbollah and Islamic Jihad wont be part of the ceasefire so would carry on like they usually do.
    Hamas seem a bit slow in realising they are pretty screwed this time.
    They should release all the hostages as a gesture of good will for negotiations.

  No compromise. That’s also what Hamas wants. Let the war determine who wins. If Hamas is stupid enough to start a war they need to be prepared to lose.

I see Helen White, when questioned by media about the deceimation of the vote in Mt Albert, responded that she did not decimate the vote.

She’s right.

The historical definition of Decimation would be to reduce the quantity by one tenth or 10%.

Her majority fell by 99.9% and the Party Vote by 49%

Watching her on the TV and listening to her speak, one can only wonder how the hell she became a candidate in any seat, let alone the Seat of Labour Leaders Past.

  I consider the technical correct meaning of decimate does refer to one in ten reduction as practiced to discipline. Roman soldiers forced to select by lot the tenth comrade and proceed to kill him.
  There is a considerable understanding that decimation now refers to a massive reduction with no reference to the ten percent factor.

        The connections between the Green movement and the National Socialists (Nazi’s) have always been very strong. A google search brings up many academic works on the strong vegetarian / animal rights / environmental protection aspects of Nazi ideology. It’s not clear the connection between these ideas and antisemitism but it’s undeniable that they have been closely associated since the Nazi’s came to power.

    Not allowing Cabinet Ministers to hire and fire the CEO of their Department is no different to company Directors not being allowed to hire and fire their company’s CEO.
    In both cases the CEO’s role is to implement strategies and policies.
    In addition Ministers like Directors should require the CEO to sign an undated letter of resignation to be dated as required.
    Otherwise the CEO gets to wag the dog. I see this time and time again in NZX companies where the CEO especially if they are also a Director manipulates the Board.

      Matt, “one good candidate” should be able to attract a majority of the votes cast. Moko Tapania’s 26.43% of the first preference votes (FPs) (5,123 / 19,380) was simply not good enough to be an acceptable winner. He had to build up to 50%+, and rightly so. Ann Court (23.96% of FPs – 4,643 / 19,380) was unable to do that.
      
      Consequently, Tepania was the one good candidate who deserved to be elected. The People got precisely what they knowingly voted for, with the preferences accurately reflecting their true preferences for the candidates through all eight iterations of the count.

      IIRC the F’NDC model ended up showing that the special ward needed only ~ 1100 voting docs per council rep compared to ~2500 docs per general ward rep. Also seem to remember that when the proposal was implemented the LGC was quite happy to sign off the small ward size ( despite it breaching statute) for all sorts of “special” reasons ….

Report: Photographers Accompanied Hamas During Oct. 7 Massacre.Yes Most Usa Lefty Media knew the Massacre was going to happen .What an indictment of far left reporting and Journalistic Malpractice .The fix was in they knew it .

When Hamas terrorists began their murderous assault against Israel on the morning of Oct. 7, international news wire services like Reuters and Associated Press almost immediately began to publish pictures of the invasion.

According to a report by the investigative website HonestReporting published on Wednesday, this wasn’t just a case of dumb luck – instead, freelance journalists from inside Gaza accompanied the terrorists on their rampage and may have been informed of it beforehand.

This is how media companies like Reuters, AP, The New York Times, and CNN could publish pictures of burning IDF tanks, crowds of Gazan civilians breaking into Kibbutzim, and Israeli citizens being kidnapped almost in real-time.

For example, Mohammed Fayq Abu Mostafa, a freelancer working with Reuters, just happened to be on the scene to take a picture of an Israeli soldier being dragged out of a tank and lynched. The photo was even chosen as one of the “Images of the Day” in the Reuters database.

Hassan Eslaiah, a photographer working with AP, took a picture of himself in front of a destroyed IDF tank inside Israel, writing on social media platform X in a since-deleted tweet: “Live from inside the Gaza Strip settlements.”

Shortly after HonestReporting’s account was published, an older picture of Eslaiah being kissed by Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar surfaced.

Yousef Masoud, who worked with the NYT and AP, captured photos of several Israelis being kidnapped, among them German-Israeli Shani Louk, who was confirmed to have been murdered.

AP later removed some of the names from the photo credits in their database, in a possible attempt to cover up their journalistic malpractice.

“Is it conceivable to assume that ‘journalists’ just happened to appear early in the morning at the border without prior coordination with the terrorists? Or were they part of the plan?” the report asked.

The investigation done by HonestReporting raises serious questions about the possible knowledge the media outlets had of the attack, either beforehand or very early in the day.

As the outlets received the pictures soon after they were captured by the freelancers, some communication between them and the media outlets must have occurred.

In addition, apparent ties the freelancers had to the terror government of Hamas didn’t stop them from finding employment with some of the most prestigious media companies in the world.

These facts also shed new light on attempted Hamas hoaxes like the alleged attack on the al-Ahli hospital and generally call into question the accuracy of international media reports from inside the Gaza Strip since Hamas took control of it in 2006.

Minister Benny Gantz reacted to the report on his account on X.

“Journalists found to have known about the massacre, and still chose to stand as idle bystanders while children were slaughtered – are no different than terrorists and should be treated as such,” he said.

CNN decided to suspend its ties with Hassan Eslaiah following the report, but emphasized that “we have not at this time found reason to doubt the journalistic accuracy of the work he has done for us.”

It can’t be that watertight, certainly not to insiders, or are things that volatile that not even a blogger, especially one with DPF’s contacts, can risk reporting on it?

I ask because it seems to me that one of the primary political blogs in the country should be covering this, even if not to the same extent as Patreon, rather than just the daily GD with occasional shots at Labour thrown in. Or, god help us, turning to the useless plonkers in the MSM.

    In this case the polis aren’t talking (much) and the media, at a quiet news time, are upset and writing attack pages to fill their time slots / pages.

Why don’t we sack the Electoral Commission and conduct our elections through the banking system.

Set up an account for each party and candidate and treat votes as a deposit of a virtual dollar.

Give the voter a receipt for their vote/deposit.

People without accounts can use a temporary bank account number.
The candidate with the most “dollars” will be the MP and the party representation will be indicated by the number of dollars in their account.

We would have the results at 7.01pm and they would be correct.

  However I no longer favour electronic voting from home. There is too much risk of others forcing votes, think dominent spouse standing over partner to make sure they vote as instructed. Having secrecy for your vote is nice. You can tell your Greenie partner you voted for the Greens and instead have voted for Act. Everyone is happy.

    And if voters can’t get off their butts once every three years and get to the local polling booth, one has to question whether they actually exist, or never existed, died years ago but death not reported, or or lack the mental capacity to get to or organise a ride to the local polling booth.
    
    Without any requirement to produce ID to vote or be a special voter, there are gaping holes a mile wide that allow false votes.
    
    There are zero checks that would prevent someone driving around and enrolling as a special voter a dozen times. It would be relatively easy for ‘activists’ to have genuine addresses they could use. ‘Staying with friends’ (after the North Island floods/storms, Earthquake, etc), staying at the local Marae, staying at a boarding house, or even a false address, but mailing address set as a P O Box or another address where mail for the false identities is sent, just to name a few….

  Two very quick points.
  
  1. Up until the last year or two I regarded Bryce Edwards as a lightweight. Most if not all of his columns up until that point were just regurgitations of what others were saying on current events and I found the issues he chose to cover were right down in the weeds – and as a professor of political science at one of our great universities I expected him to cover issues of much greater importance and for his readers to come away far better informed as a result of his analysis of complex and, at times, impenetrable material.
  
  I’m really pleased to say the of late he’s been doing exactly that for more frequently. He’s wrestling with big issues and telling us what he thinks and why. Great to see him develop so.
  
  2. Graham Adams continues to be a national treasure. May he live a long, productive and happy life.
  
  I might also say that when I see the lineups of bimbos and lightweights being feted at our national journalism awards year after year (and having endless write ups about what colour they choose to paint their kitchen last week, their battles and ‘heartache’ getting a refund from their bank recently or full-length write ups on the trauma they experienced when a teacher spoke harshly to them 20 years ago) while people like Graham Adams go completely unrecognised I just shake my head.

A very confused man-who-thinks-he’s-a-woman called Maeve DuVally has written an article for the London Standard (https://www.standard.co.uk/comment/comment/maeve-duvally-trans-acceptance-goldman-sachs-b1118814.html) in which he urges “honest dialogue as the route to trans acceptance”.

He starts by stating that the UK debate on freedom of speech is “acrimonious and nasty” and then abandons any pretence at honesty with the following:
“Inland America is mostly an alternative reality. State laws restrict gender affirming healthcare for youth, bathroom access in schools and transgender youth participation in sports.”

Well sir, I suggest it is you who are living in an alternate reality, if you believe for one second that a man can become a woman, or that cutting bits off young people, giving them puberty blockers and other irreversible life-altering treatments is in any way “gender-affirming” or “healthcare”.

It’s also true that allowing biological males into girls-only toilets, showers and changing rooms is an exceptionally bad idea, and thankfully the tide is starting to turn against fifth-rate male athletes who decide they want to dominate a competition by pretending they’re now female. I salute those states, and those brave lawmakers.

He then goes on to say: “Starting with children and then moving on to adults, they seem to want to make it as difficult as possible to physically transition and perhaps at some point convince society that transgenderism is a form of mental illness.”
Yes, well….quite.

  One of my big concerns about Peters was that he talks a good game before an election but really doesn’t give much of a damn once he’s elected.
  
  This is sadly another example of this. It’s all very well saying the tribunal must be limited and they should get back to basics but nothing will really change with this approach – a policy tweak, even a minor law amendment can be very easily reversed when Labour get back in (and they will eventually).
  
  This is where ACT’s referendum trumps all. If the referendum happens (and I doubt it will sadly – National seem to be terrified of it and Peters sounds like he isn’t really that interested), in the safety and privacy of the voting booth, I suspect an overwhelming majority of Kiwis would say enough is enough and the gravy train ends.
  
  A massive, public vote to limit the treaty and move on would be very difficult to ignore for any future government. That’s why I hope the referendum survives the negotiations.

Just watched the police press conference on the Ruthless Empire death.

My take is that a conviction is by no means assured and the detective in charge appeared very frustrated. Case may be hinged on finding items of interest disposed of by the people in the house.

It’s too bad they can’t jointly hold all 3 accountable, they’re a cunning bunch for sure.

This is about Australia’s “Snowy 2.0” – a massive extension to the Snowy Mountains Scheme which would provide “pumped hydro” capacity.

It was pushed by Malcolm Turnbull when he was PM in 2017. The estimated cost of $2.0 billion is now $12.0 billion with no end in sight. The project requires 2 x 27 km long tunnels. Sadly, the giant boring machine encountered a sink hole, and has been stuck, not moving, for 19 months.

The politicians are now in “We have no choice” mode. Incredibly, it is being described as “still a good investment”. If it can be finished, which at this stage is unclear, it could well end up costing up to $20 billion and not be completed until well after 2030.

This is Australia, with massive supplies of natural gas, coal, and uranium. Yet they went for this thing.

Snowy 2.0 will deliver 2,200 MW of capacity. From this list, that is equivalent to a small nuclear power station. The small French units are about 2,600 MW and the larger ones 4,000 MW and above.

Instead of this boondoggle, Australia could have commissioned two small to medium nuclear plants, using established technology with zero emissions.

I remember when

How Israel should have responded to the Hamas attacks.
Any Hamas soldiers still in Israeli territory were fair game.
However, once Hamas and those kidnapped had retreated in Gaza City the only acceptable response was negotiation.
Once Israel had agreed that no further action would occur if the prisoners were released, and Hamas did this, peace would resume.

Sounds reasonable?

  Firstly you would have to assume that Hamas would deal with Israel in good faith and I think the whole thing would fall over there. Secondly if Israel did take this approach then Hamas would be encouraged to continue the attacks and taking of hostages.

And for that a prosecution was launched in a highly partisan Democrat jurisdiction, inventing a conspiracy and a crime, and asking a likely all Democrat jury if they thought he was trying to subvert an election they lost at a time of heightened anti-Trump media sentiment. He certainly wouldn’t have been convicted in a more neutral jurisdiction and he is potentially looking at 10 years jail.

We’re getting very tired of seeing the Police being continually critised at the Coroner’s hearing into the Chch mosk shooting, as to the way they handled events as the situation was unfolding.
As my partner said….those cops put their lives on the line without any idea what they were facing due to lack of information and under-resourcing from Bullshit Castle.

Here we are 4 years later and nothing has changed in that regard. If anything, under Cuddles, it has gone backwards.
