Not a great trend for Labour.

I wonder what the trend would look like for the left of you added the Greens vote share?

A more interesting chart would be one showing socialism’s grip on our life and liberty irrespective of the political party at the helm. The chart’s technicals would show an upward channel. Of that I have no doubt.

How about this graph overlaid with the blue for National? This would also show the declining share trend of both major parties since MMP.

Interesting graph, be interested to see if Nationals looks similar in a post-fpp world. Has voting behaviour changed as smaller parties have gotten more established – Greens, Act, NZF, Maori Party?

Pride comes before a fall.
If we discount the Covid Blip, then National is on the skids too. Not nearly as bad as Labour, but on the skids none the less.

2008: 45%
2011: 47%
2014: 47%
2017: 44%
2020: 36% <– Covid anomaly
2023: 39%

The real winners in the last two elections have been the minor parties – particularly ACT.

My dyed in the wool Labour neighbour has had a miraculous transformation and is praising Nat/ACT/NZF for wanting to rid the nation of Maori seepage. He is especially in praise of Winston so I suspect he voted for him.

    Winston never had anything to do with the Greens 2017 to 2020. He left it to Jacinda to deal with the Greens. He even required Jacinda to agree to a seating plan so NZF sat well away from the Greens.

Hmmm, up until 2020, each Labour high at election time was lower than the previous high. And each low, was lower than the previous low. Sorry, but in business, this is called grasping for salvation, and then capitulation into irrelevance.

2020 certainly seems like an anomaly. Labour’s other recent elections have varied from middling to historically terrible.

(Of course there should be a clear demarcation at 1996 when we switched from FPP to MMP, which fundamentally changed the dynamics of our electoral system)
