  As a social conservative I once upon a time in a previous life swore that I would never vote for Seymour after he championed his anti- life euthanasia bill. However, given the electoral choices we have, I must swallow my principles and cast my party vote for ACT and its far- from- perfect leader. There is too much at stake for me to do otherwise.

    The end of life choices act is pro choice, not anti life.
    
    I’ve just skimmed through the Act and the number of hoops that need to be jumped through is significant.
    
    If I had a prognosis where I was going to spend my last months writing on a bed in agony I’d prefer to have that choice.
    
    You’d do it for a dog…
    
    But, that’s the thing about issues like this. Not everyone is going to agree.

    I can’t swallow my principles that easily Nukuleka, I don’t want to be complicit with Seymour.
    My primary goal is to sink Labour, which gives me the choice between a liar that says the wrong things apart from economics, a liar that always says all the right things before elections and soppy wet Labour lite.

      You need to go back a few years into the Kiwiblog archives Matt when you were a real Winston fan and would vote New Zealand First to keep National honest.
      If I remember right you always did the same and voice your disapproval of National close to a Election to vote for Winston, which is your right of course.

        If we go back to 2017 when National decided there were votes in kicking dairy farming, and McCully decided sponsoring terrorist’s resolutions at the UN was the best use they could make of being on the Security council, it’s true, I stopped supporting National. And at that point I hadn’t even understood how far they’d gone with co governance.
        Winston had the former communications lead from Federated Farmers as his chief of staff and was saying all the right things. I’m not sure you would find posts where I supported Winston, I can tell you in that election I voted Act.

      They’re all politically-expedient liars, but at least Seymour has principles. How do we know?
      
      1. He refused a Ministerial position in order to get his end of life bill through. Principles over baubles.
      
      2. He was a lone voice against the knee-jerk reaction to the Christchurch mosques massacre, speaking out against the gun laws which everybody now knows were pointless and inly punished law-abiding firearms owners. let alone the debacle of people stealing guns handed in or bought back from Police stations, and the Police managing to lose the personal details, including addresses, of several hundred firearms licence-holders.
      
      3. He has categorically refused to work with Winston First, even if it means ACT will be outside parliament.
      
      Find me someone with those principles, and I’ll vote for them.

        Talk about ‘fool me once’. A month ago I was 90% sure I was voting Act. Then I read an email exchange with him in which he called the person asking about excess all cause mortality and he said the jabs didn’t kill anyone, covid did, and if you think otherwise you’re delusional.
        
        Then I saw the interview he did with Family First and McCoskrie. I know nothing about Family First, but Seymour’s disgusting lack of basic courtesy and blatant contempt for McCoskrie and his party was painful to watch.
        Now this?
        He makes Peters look like an altar boy.
        
        The hypocrisy of those telling people to hold their nose and vote for this muppet is painful.

    As D Garrett has posted, Seymour seems to have some contempt for this site. Contributors contacting him with their views may soften his hubris .
    
    People are seeing his negative policies may soon outweigh his positive policies . It won’t take much more for him to become a liability .

      Nat/greens simply will not happen – the watermelons are much more red than green. The two parties are incompatible. If the Greens focused on green issues they would always be in government – they could work with both Labour and the Nats and would have considerable influence.     Still won’t vote for him due to his pushing through of euthanasia. There is absolutely no excuse for killing people. As is shown in other countries it’s the start of a slippery slope. He seems to be bungling things a bit at the moment anyway and the latest is he wants to remove 2nd of January from the public holiday list. That won’t go down well. I’m retired so it wouldn’t affect me but I feel for families trying to get a break

  Matt: I am getting seriously worried that Seymour is going to blow it…I had an email exchange with him last week – he normally just ignores me – in which he insultingly concluded with “enjoy wasting your day in the comments section of Kiwiblog”
  
  I replied saying essentially that the vast majority of us here – including visitors who never comment is in the tens of thousands a month – were ACT supporters, or at least ACT friendly and he should wake up and smell the coffee and tone down his hubris, which seems to get worse every day.

        Thoughts of a strong ACT voice in any new coalition scare many – including more than a few in the State-owned and State subsidised news media.
        
        NZ First sees ACT as a rival, and even National is pushing hard for party votes. Its “two ticks blue” signs are in my Christchurch suburb.
        
        Would ACT survive without Seymour?
        
        He’s a tenacious worker, and he’s got principles.
        
        Seymour deserves respect for his stand against panic for firearms controls after the mosque massacres; for, with ACT’s Nicole McKee, talking to at least some of the protesters camping outside Parliament; for, as a Maori, standing against racial separation; and for his parallel work for his electorate.
        
        If I mark my party vote for ACT, it will be largely because of Seymour, not in spite of him.

        Did Seymore accomplish the increase in support or did it just happen on his watch? It seems to me that most Act support comes from a shift in major party policies rather than a cult oc Seymore.
        
        Not stroking your ego, but IMHO, you were the most effective Act MP ever – which is why you were kneecapped. You achieved mire in your brief innings than most MPs accomplish in a decade.

        I think David Seymour has read the room and understood that he got a bit grumpy/pushy and people didn’t like the sudden change in demeanour.
        
        We are used to a polished, articulate, professional and calm approach to the issues from him. The sudden lashing out made him look erratic and that was unsettling to voters.
        
        I can understand that in no uncertain terms he does not like nor trust Winston Peters and therefore doesn’t want to work with him. In this I think he would reflect the vast majority of ACT voters. I think though his visible grumpiness has come across as arrogance and that has clouded that message.
        
        It is clear that ACT was trying to delineate the difference with NZFirst and maintain vote share in a coalition. It’s a competition don’t forget.
        
        I think also that ACT might have been a little premature in telling National how to behave (policy-wise). It’s a delicate balancing act with ACT supporters being very vocal and wanting ACT to ‘stiffen the spine of National’ and ACT running with that messaging in the lead up. Timing is everything.
        
        Message to David Seymour, please don’t alienate or insult your supporters with churlish comments about Kiwiblog commenters. This is NZ’s most popular political blog which is why we are here. And we want to see ACT in the next Government with as many MPs as possible governing on sound policy not personality politics.

    Incredibly, today’s BFD 1 October political poll has NZ First on 37% (it was 45% earlier) and ACT 31% with National on a very soggy 19%.
    Winston with all his egregious history is now scoring so high because: 1. He’s saying out loud what the electorate should be hearing from National and ACT, and 2. because Luxon stupidly failed to rule him out back when Peters’ support was only inconsequential.
    The horror is that we might well be looking at a very fractious National/NZ First/ACT coalition – which is the 2nd to last thing the country needs. (The last thing being Hipkins’ inept lot being returned.)

        David, as is covered in the comments below, it is a poll of BFD’s readership. I took it as such and, wishful thinking aside, was shocked to note how NZF had risen in readers’ popularity since the BFD’s September poll.
        Like Cam Slater, I see Luxon’s dithering to the last moment over whether he would or wouldn’t consider NZF and then capitulating as the prime reason for Nat and ACT support now arterially gushing toward NZF.
        Not me though, my memory of Peters’ treachery is not clouded.

      You are essentially going to a NZF blog site and shouldn’t be surprised that NZF does well and National does not. It’s also a hint to all those that think Winston wants to go with National, if he really did why does his mouthpiece spend so much time attacking National?

      For people that claim that Seymour and Luxon are not under daily attack by several posters on this site, you only have to flick through a few posts to see that they are. The Great Charlatan has harnessed ultra-conservatives & ‘the covid people’ to do his work for him.
      
      Luxon ruling Peters out would have boosted Peters vote. He would have been seen as an unfairly maligned rebel being punished for saying ‘what the people want to hear’.
      
      National *has* ruled Peters out leading into past elections…..and he got over the threshold!
      
      Journalists, haters, and Winnie fans are spreading this rubbish about ‘Luxons strategic mistake’. Why are they doing it? To undermine Luxon and National of course, why else.

    Mark,
    In a coalition where all parties have to vote for anything that is going to happen, it is not really possible to have bottom lines that the other parties simply won’t agree on. After all, they all have to vote for them.
    In short the coalition agreement will essentially cover the things that are basically agreeable to all. This is especially true for the major party of the coalition. They are seen to own everything the government does.
    I don’t see National agreeing to the TOW referendum. It is way too much against National’s history. National does not want to spend a year being completely dogged by TOW issues when the economy is the priority.
    Act is going to have focus on other parts of their agenda. Deregulation, charter schools, justice, etc.

        The principle reason I am personally against such a referendum is that the TOW is compact between Maori and the Crown. A referendum goes completely against that. It is highly unlikely that the majority of Maori would agree to changing the current legislative and judicial interpretation of the TOW, but in a general referendum that wouldn’t matter.
        A fundamental feature of our democratic system (and in all other western democratic systems) is majority rules, minority rights. That means the majority can’t arbitrarily take away minority rights. But that is exactly what is in prospect with a TOW referendum.
        This is the reason why National changed its policy (that existed from 2002 to about 2014) on the Maori seats. It realised that it would be unjust for the majority to take away the seats of the minority.

      But I think you (and many others on kB) discount the power of the people. We decide the government and we pay their wages. We should not stand by and accept their BS?
      
      My plan in the event of inaction on the TOW and COVID is to run a citizens’ referendum. Give the people a say then keep hitting our employees over the head with the results until something is done.
      
      Luxon is clever and has a high moral standard. The Labour party corruption is so brazen and obvious, laundering billions of our dollars through the Maori King’s family (and other schemes) into their back pockets, that Luxon will know about it and will be compelled to address it.
      
      I also heard Seymour bemoan the self enrichment of the Labour Hierarchy in past interviews so I’m hoping he has the moral fortitude to do something about what must be taxpayers greatest expense over the last 6 years!

      My policy on Euthanasia, and yes I was polled on it before the referendum, is it’s not really for me as a person to state a stand, some family members possibly need that out in certain situations, if I got sick and the opportunity arises, then the law is in place, but I do really think it’s more a family thing that has now been dealt with

  Matt – Seymour is clearly not for social conservatism (SC). His stance on both euthanasia and abortion have been clear. Then ACT completely took the war to traditionalists with the choice to stand Brooke BW in Tamaki against Nats Simon O’Connor.
  
  So the choices are:
  – vote Nats who have the highest number of SCs of in their party. But softer stance on TOW, and economic management
  – vote ACT. Not pro-SC but stronger anti-co governance and fiscal management
  – vote Winston and let him decide who gets in power and won’t do anything to inhibit TOW co-governance and will be a mixed bag on fiscal management as long as he gets some nice baubles.
  – vote democracy NZ to signal importance of the SC viewpoint effectively allocating a percentage of your vote to all the parties that get in power.
  
  I’m undecided at this stage. Definitely want a change of government but wonder if we need another term of Labour Greens TPM to really get kiwis to a point of repentance?

Paul Goldsmith has been running against Seymour in Epsom, why do National run a candidate there? I can’t believe some of the things I’m reading today. Christian Conservatives are hopping mad because that particular National MP is ‘one of them’, but it’s actually smart politics on ACTs part: someone in Tamaki who doesn’t vote for Brooke in a close personal call may decide to party vote ACT, rather than just go ‘two ticks Blue’. The aim of the ACT party must be to get the ACT party vote up, surely!

Was wondering because the media doesn’t appear to be reporting these once typically weekly (if not daily) occurrences … all in the lead up to the election!

  Race-based legal privilege (or disadvantage, depending on the perspective) is apartheid. As we see “hatred” and “racism” are the only responses to calling it out as being such, which tells us that they know it’s apartheid.
  
  Opponents have to lean into it. Thinking people understand the nature of co-governance; unthinking drones agree when they are told it is a moral imperative and “racist” to oppose it.
  
  I cannot stress enough the we have to dispense with the moral framework that tells us that “racism” is the pinnacle of immorality. “Racism” is a rhetorical speed bump placed in the way of anyone who is following a certain line of reasoning, that being a White person who is standing up for himself and not bending over, while pointing out the reality of non-White people’s (in this case, Maori) position.
  
  They don’t really believe that so-called “racists” hate brown people, they just depend on the so-called “racists” thinking that that is what they mean. You get someone like Luxon falling into this trap all of the time:
  
  “Do you think that was a racist statement, Mr Luxon?”
  
  “No, no, no. I’m not racist – please, please like me. Please! See, we have a diverse cabinet too! See. No racism here. I hate White people as much as the next decent person.”
  
  He should ignore these questions and move onto something he wants to say. Or perhaps he could ask the questioner to define ‘racism’ first before he forms a view. Instead, they fall into the trap every time, and play a game devised to handicap them and which they’ll never win.
  
  It is a mental trap that means, unless we ignore it, no issue will ever be addressed and fixed, because addressing and fixing things is necessarily “racist.”

    Make no mistake – all their abandoned/paused policy, like co-governance on steroids and wealth taxes will be implemented if they get back in.
    
    If Labour can form a government with the Greens and Maori, both of whom are committed to wealth taxes etc, Hipkins will need to allow the wealth taxes, probably as a price of the coalition agreement, or Labour will roll Hipkins if required.

    Have seen a video of Mr Peters running rings round the woman who chaired the TV3 minor party leaders debate – Rebecca someone.
    He really called her out on racism, Maori history and lack of respect for older people.
    Her arrogance and conceit is an example of the media out of touch with the people.
    Peters is a clever politician and I can see why many are turning his way.

  Winston’s dislike of David Seymour will mean that ACT policies will be still born.
  
  The other thing is what kinds of madness will Winston want in a coalition agreement?
  
  Yes, New Zealand would be rid of the current horror show. However IMO such a three way coalition would mean that the country would stagnate. I think that David Seymour would eventually walk away, even if that meant a new election. He is not there to be in government. He is there to achieve change.
  
  Since 1996, the trend has been for MMP to serve up progressively worse outcomes. Maybe 2017 was the nadir, but maybe there is worse to come.

The most influential lobbyists (and advisors) in NZ would be the Maori elite and their whanau based in Wellington. Add to that the CTU and NZEI ; Joyce is small beer compared to the influence these organizations have on the Labour Government. Lobbyists represent interest groups; MP’s represent the people. Labour has a bunch of weak and incompetent MP’s who have put the demands of their sponsors before the aspirations of the public. A good reason to turf them out.

The last time I ever felt like walking up to the telly and smashing someone in the face was about ten years ago, when then Mayor Len Brown sat in the studio, hotly denying he’d eaten a Chinese Takeaway off the Boardroom Table in the sacred Wherethefukarewe Room of the Auckland Town Hall.

But watching TV3s ‘The Nation’ interview yesterday between National’s mild-mannered hardman Mark Mitchell……and that nasty overbearing Labor sukhole Simon Shepard, I felt that same way about Simon 🙁

  Maggie: I couldn’t agree more. But I was very surprised when Shephard cited decreasing charging numbers, that Mitchell didn’t grasp the nettle and blame that squarely on police policy, and more squarely on Cuddles Coster.
  
  I had a guest piece published on here last week in which I suggested that the 25% reduction in prisoner numbers arose from judges sentencing more leniently. As discussion went on, it seemed much more likely that the decrease largely arose from police downgrading charges, and charging offenders less often – which the graph shown during that interview showed.
  
  Perhaps as an ex policeman Mitchell doesn’t feel comfortable criticising his former brethren? I found that an odd omission on his part.

I watched Q&A for the first time for many months as can’t stand Jack Tame. He interviewed Winston in the most despicable example of biased aggressive intimidating beat up I have ever seen. I was surprised Winston did not walk out this was obviously a set up hatchet job orchestrated by the TVNZ masters. The result will be more votes for Winston and hopefully the end of Tame and TVNZ with a new government

  Sorry, I honestly couldn’t give a crap about the downticks this might generate, but when a politician can’t answer simple questions like how much a prison will cost, how many gang associates there are, and running away from answering questions when he was Deputy PM, refusing to answer any questions on his donors or his championing of the racing industry, all things Peter’s has either campaigned on or has done in when he was last in power, that is not on Tame – Tame is doing his job. Sure, Tame should be bringing this against every politician, but Peter’s was pathetic – he doesn’t have a clue, he’s rambling, he’s got soundbites with nothing else behind them – because there is nothing else behind them – he is a shallow husk, a dog barking at cars, targeting those 5% or so of discontented voters who he has targeted as being those that can get him in – he couldn’t give a shit about them because he is only using them to get back to the trough – there are no details behind his policy because there doesn’t need to be. With the Greens clearly holding firm and on the ascendancy and given that their supporters are more likely to turnout on election day compared with dispirited Labour voters is it just possible that, post the election, we could end up with the Greens in Parliament being His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition … and what would that mean for Labour.

Sweden’s “carry on working” Covid policy has been more successful than lockdowns by the measure of excess deaths, surely a valid comparison.

So it looks like Ardern’s economic shutdown needlessly plunged us into inflation that will take years to tame. It also near-killed our tourist industry, the country’s biggest earner of foreign exchange.

It was Labour’s Covid policy: they were in charge; they were the government. Why aren’t election campaigners ripping into Labour on this?

A short, interesting video looks at Sweden’s Covid strategy and mentions the “model” of the Imperial College of London, which I think was the one that NZ followed.

At 8.06 in the video clip, a smug BCC Hardtalk interviewer seems to sneer at the Swedish approach. This was early in the pandemic.

I quite enjoyed Paul Henry on the radio but it was embarrassing watching him talk over and sneer at the Swede—then misinterpreting the Swedes maths and beating him up as if he had a superior knowledge of math but was just plain ignorant. Winston said on Newshub yesterday that in relation to a government of the Nats, ACT and NZ First “We need to put our differences and egos aside and start acting like adults”.

Winston is showing maturity and starting to bury the hatchet with Seymour so they can work together post election. In the Kiss, Marry, Kick game on a political show Winston chose to “Kiss” Seymour – another gesture of some goodwill. Seymour by contrast chose to “kick” Winston.

Seymour keeps bagging Winston all the time can’t get over his own ego and feelings and is behaving like a child. I am extremely unimpressed and most unfortunately ACT has lost my vote.

I have always voted ACT and now I’m voting NZ First.

Monday night’s Newshub Reid Research poll had Labour down 0.3 points to 26.5 percent, which would only equate to 33 seats on election night, compared with the 65 it got at the last election.
The trend for Labour has been in a downward direction for months now and many of the seats it won at the 2020 election will inevitably flip back to National next month.

A couple of decades ago, a real journalist or good interviewer used to facilitate informing viewers by asking questions they might want answers to.

This seems for a while to have been frustrated by the government distributing 55 million dollars, with a gateway clause of up-lifting a revised version of the Treaty of Waitangi.

But in Winston’s playbook, instead of funding and the subsequent promotion of the treaty, what constitutes a successful interview is one where he wins by beating the shirt out of the interview facilitator.

In both cases you can learn something about the playbook employed, but little or nothing about any information that the interview was for.
So, apart from confirming your views of the participants, it is all a fucking waste of time

Remember how we laughed and marvelled at the besotted fans of Jacinda Ardern. The whole press gallery was in thrall. Even our intrepid cartoonists could find nothing to lampoon her for.
Yet here we are, with voters who should be entirely focused on turfing out this incompetent Labour government falling in love all over again with Winston First. His lovely smile, his humour, his quick wit, his abrasiveness with the media – yes he’s a great performer but he should never ever be allowed anywhere near government again.
Why do Kiwis get infatuated with charlatans like Ardern and Peters? It baffles me.
Go for the slightly boring, reasonably competent, anti-Labour choice. There’s lots of ways to ride your hobby horses once we have kicked Labour out but it will be the NZ First fan boys and girls who will let them squeak back in.
With a much more powerful Greens voice.

I just checked out the excess deaths data for New Zealand for 2023 to 30 September.

2805 excess deaths, of which 952 are recorded as COVID deaths.

The good news is that the excess deaths seem to be declining. The last 5 weeks, excess deaths have been trending at about 9 percent above the long term average. Earlier in the year excess deaths were over 20 percent, even 30 percent one week.

Still that is nearly 2,000 excess deaths in 2023 that are not recorded as “COVID deaths” and literally nobody wants to acknowledge them, let alone explore possible causes.

It took me 15 minutes to do this analysis. You would think that ACT had a staffer who could use excel and tell David Seymour.

  It’s crying out for some in-depth epidemiological study, tracking cause of deaths against age and ideally vax status. NZ provided a remarkable laboratory in 2020 and 2021 with no respiratory viruses or covid in circulation, but full vaccination program through Q2-Q3 ’21 – and +2000 excess deaths in ’21 compared to ’20.
  
  Covid is killing sick people who used to die of other respiratory illnesses, mostly just shifted from ‘flu’ column to ‘covid’, I doubt it is increasing overall deaths much.

A bit too late for the pupils who are sitting exams this year…..

Labour has announced its plan to lift maths and literacy achievement by offering two million free tutoring sessions to intermediate and secondary school students. Labour made the announcement on the same day party leader Chris Hipkins tested positive for COVID-19.

How very convieniant, two weeks before an Election – and the heat is on.
Having Covid is just running away, and he knows this. I am 71 and I have had Covid. I have had way worse influenza!
Yeah yeah, effects different people different ways especially those with underlying medical conditions they don’t know about.
Be nice to see Hipkins appointments for this week, and who he may be dodging!

  We should be all texting Chris Luxon asking him to make a law on finance , making sure that what Jacinda Ardern did in making a fund for the media to encourage them to give Labour more media time and fair stories than the opposition is never allowed again .
  The media profited while Labour was the Government but already we are seeing them struggling to finance themselves with advertising and have already had meetings with the Minister Willie Jackson for help.
  National need to push a law through making it impossible for any Government to inact this policy again

  Students don’t get “pay”, they get an allowance, usually as a loan with zero interest, to assist them with school fees, living costs, etc.

  What on earth are you on about. The prime minister has never said that. Both he and Peters have both ruled each other out, for goodness’ sake.
  
  The interview this morning was indeed an utter trainwreck (see PeeJay at 10:32AM, above, and SmokerGuy at 5:04PM, below), as indeed every interview with Peters over the last 40+ years has been.
  
  As I said at GD three weeks ago (Sun 10 Sep 23, at 3:18PM, in response to PeeJay), Jack Tame has been on fire, all year, regardless of which politician he was interviewing. This morning, a totally unprepared Peters came up against an interviewer on top of his game, and was found utterly wanting. He blew it.
  
  If NZ First gets 5%+ after that shocking performance, then we truly are in for a rough ride over the next three years.

I’m definitely no fan of Jack Tame but anyone who wants a National led government (myself included) should be very concerned with the way Peters interviewed on Q and A this morning. It was an appalling performance, he was unable to give any information about his own policies and just spent the entire time acting extremely unprofessional. Sure Jack Tame was much more aggressive compared to his fluff piece interview with Shaw but that’s no excuse to act the way Peters did. Part of being a politician is dealing with media, suck it up FFS! How the hell can anyone vote for NZ First and think they will improve New Zealand?

The unsolved hate crimes of NZ’s left.

1. Unsolved: Steph Lewis, the MP for Whanganui,
“, my office is on the ground floor of the complex and last week protesters took objects and walked around the buildings banged on our windows to intimidate MPs and staff. “They called at us ‘come out come out wherever you are or we will come in and find you’. We were threatened with being lynched, hung, or kidnapped.”
Outcome: Nothing. No one arrested. No parliamentary cctv footage. No one named.

2. Unsolved. Jack Brazil Former Green Candidate. Shot. And then the police cordoned off and raided Jack’s own cafe? Who shot Jack.

Outcome: No description of the offender or who was in the car with him has been released. No description of what was found in the raid. The shooter has not been found.

3. Unsolved Shaneel Lal burglary suspected hate crime.
Outcome: Shaneel said the police had not taken it seriously.

4. Unsolved – Death Threats against Efeso Collins. Text message threatening death to Efeso sent to Green party HQ.
““Police got in contact and told me threats were made against me,” Collins told the New Zealand Herald.
“The detective said the threat was along the lines of they want to execute me. I never had official copy of the threat. The detective was also shocked by the gist of the threat.”
Outcome: Copy of the text not made public. Even Efeso hasn’t seen the text.. Offender not found.

5. Unsolved – Hana Rawhiti Maipi Clarke. Home ram raided, people came in and threatened her, burgled repeatedly, letter left.

Outcome: No description of offenders. No letter published. No description of the car.

So Hipkins has had to isolate because of Covid, and this may affect his campaigning. I have two observations:
1) If he indeed he has Covid, then it’s his own party’s policies that have required him to isolate. Hoist, petard etc.
2) It’s also a very convenient way to dodge reponsibility for the forthcoming kicking his party will get, and maybe muster up a bit of a sympathy vote.

Either way, tough shit.
