Can we keep paying the bills for New Zealander’s after the waste of Taxpayers dollars amounting to millions if not billions of dollars over the last six years by this Government.
Well it appears we will after the Labour Party has sent a cry for all those people that are hurting from inflation and other means that has hit our economy to rally to the call that our Prime Minister has put out to be a part of his announcement on unleashing policies to help all that are affected by our struggling economy.
So is this the day the Labour Party annoucethat they will take GST off our fruit and vegetables to to help people in need and what other tax policies they can find to help the needy or is this more piss and wind from a Prime Minister and Labour Party that uses announcements to cover other announcements to decieve.

  The next big threat is the Electoral Commission.
  
  They will be hiring about 20,000 temporary workers to conduct the election.
  
  The problem is the political leanings of those workers and whether they are prepared to do something illegal with the votes to maintain this regime.
  
  It would be sensible to look at the previous election through this lens.

    Oh god. Tell us the last time nz electoral workers did something illegal. They haven’t. Don’t create something that isn’t there. We have one of the better systems here with paper votes and parties monitor what is being done

      The biggest such issue was in 2002 or so when a bundle of completed voting papers from a not too busy polling station went missing. It was no practical deal since the number of votes was known and it could be shown that the votes would not affect the final outcome even if all the votes were all for any of the parties or candidates. Electoral people took it to court out of an abundance of precaution which confirmed the method to deal with it was OK. Helen Clark was highly annoyed over this and things were tightened up as a result.
      Parties appoint scrutineers to keep an eye on the whole process but generally cannot find enough scrutineers to cover the whole process. If (say) National or ACT had serious concerns about electoral integrity it would be easier to persuade more party stalwarts to be scrutineers.

    You may be always right, but in this case you are misguided. I worked as an electoral officer for two elections and I can assure you that the Electoral Commission has multiple checks in place to catch “illegal” conduct, whether it be from voters or electoral officers. Nor has such conduct ever been an issue in the NZ electoral process. Now let’s move on.

  Last night I attended an Act Party public meeting in Martinborough. Speaking was Act number 3 Nicole McKee. She spoke about 3 things of concern to NZers – crime, cost of living and co-governance.
  What she said was well received by an audience of about 50.
  
  But problems started at question time with at least 3 men becoming increasingly agitated and unreasonable.
  
  What strikes me is how frustrated many people are. The lockdowns, the vaccine mandate and the stultifying political correctness has left many people angry and upset.
  
  One thing I’d like to see is a new government with an emphasis on allowing free speech and open debate. People are sick of the podium of truth. Less government and more free speech would go a long way to ease people’s frustrations and concerns.

      We are seeing (in political debate especially) in society the loss of reasoned debate and nuance. This is being replaced with a sense of absolute right which, in the pursuit of which, gives to the holders of such opinions the self given right to act in ways that do incredible damage and detriment to their cause.
      
      In some cases this approach stems from the complete irrationality of their position (eg: Men can be women), in others a response to what is seen as over-reach by a government, or a government in waiting, (such as the measures taken during covid, which are now seen as potentially draconian).
      
      In any case, “Unreasonable” is a relative concept

      Yes they were talking about covid amongst other things. However there are people who appear to be angry and just can’t be reasoned with. There was three or four of them at this meeting. There was a little bit of pushing and shoving at the end of the meeting.
      But you know the type Clan? People who become louder and more vexatious the more other people try and reason with them.
      
      It’s all very well casting aspersions on David Seymour and the Act party. But they weren’t the government. They were a smaller party in opposition.
      
      Now having said that, I can understand why people are upset. That’s why I am arguing for more free-speech and more dialogue and less government interference in our lives. And that was something that the speaker from Act did finish with. Act is the party of less government intrusion in our lives. Which I totally agree with.

      You haven’t taken into account geography. It’s a 100k round trip from Masterton to Martinborough and more of the Wairarapa
      population live in Masterton and the other towns. Martinborough is well off the beaten track and well away from all the other Wairarapa towns.
      
      ACT would have got a better turnout if they held the meeting in Greytown which is a lot more central, equidistant and accessible for people to travel to from the surrounding towns of Masterton, Carterton, Featherston and Martinborough.
      
      ACT should take travel accessibility into account next time if they decide to hold another meeting in the Wairarapa.

  I say in the first 100 days of a Nat/ACT government they must do the following.
  
  1. Disband the Maori Health Authority.
  2. Disband the 3/5 Waters Authority.
  3. Announce a binding referendum on repealing the ToW and the Waitangi Tribunal.
  4. Annouce a binding referendum on scrapping Maori seats in Parliament.
  5. Sack the Police Commissioner and replace him with a person who is non-racist and will uphold the law equally.
  6.Announce that all race based legislation and regulation will be repealed.
  
  If as expected the Left cause violent civil unrest institute Martial Law and bring in the Defence Forces to deal with the troublemakers.

        All treaties pass their use by date. The ToW is one of them (to the extent that it’s even a treaty by definition). It’s served its purpose in that it established some basic principles to get the nascent nation off the ground, but now it’s a source of antagonism. It isn’t even law, so it doesn’t need to be repealed. The only thing I disagree with is the referendum part – just do it. Say we will no longer give it any consideration. Will this cause unrest? Absolutely. But it will cause unrest anyway if the status quo persists, so we may as well do it asap. Be bold I say (but we are talking about National, who have a deep aversion to boldness).

        Che Guava – The Treaty is not law but laws such as the education act refer to compliance with Te Tiriti. Interestingly this is apparently not the same as a reference to The Treaty. I suspect Te Tiriti says whatever maori want it to say on any given day.

    I say there will be riots. The left today are quite a different animal than 6+ years ago. National Troops mobilised to keep the peace (the police are useless, just a unit not a Force)
    The left are angry – all of their Govt perks could be taken away. Those who just will not work will have their benefits slashed (and about time)
    Leaving school and straight on the dole is not an option. Govt Ministries will be cleaned out, the Net Taxpayer does not owe you a lazy lifestyle.
    The Treaty needs to be rubbished by going back to the 1840 version. NO MORE GRAVY TRAIN!
    Anything that is Maori only to be disbanded (eg Maori Health) Maori Seats in Parliament gone – they are racist. Maori appointed Councilors gone, they are racist.

    The Listener “Upfront” this week, (Aug 19-25) reminds us of human rights legislation enacted in NZ including, in 1972, the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and in 1993, The Human Rights Act which makes it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of sex, marital status, religious belief, RACE (my caps) disability, age, political opinion and sexual orientation.
    So what has gone wrong? A rhetorical question, of course.

      This point is of paramount importance.
      
      But what would be accomplished by dismembering Te Pukeko? And please don’t say “competition”. We have 8 universities competing with each other for a limited pool of students, spending vast sums on marketing their respective products that differ only slightly more meaningfully than those sold by BP, Mobil, Caltex etc.

      Why?
      
      IMO there should be some minimum national expectations of what all children should know, either as facts or skills. A national curriculum is part of holding schools to account, but does not prevent individual schools from including other things.

      The whole thing is ridiculous. Household tasks are generally divided with different people taking responsibility for different tasks, in a way that best suits their household. If the Uffindell household works with the woman doing the shopping most of the time, so what. When this story broke I asked the men at lunch at my workplace who did the traditionally female tasks at their houses – turns out one man does all the cooking (but not the shopping because he tends to blow the budget!), another does all the shopping, another all the dishes and vacuuming. Not one said their wife did the lawns though.

I’m not reopening the discussion but just raising that it’s obviously a more divided issue than I’d thought, assuming that most Kiwibloggers would be Ukraine supporters. Perhaps this election isn’t going to be quite so straightforward after all.

      Cassandra – it is the source that must be questioned. If it’s AP, Reuters or AFP it must be questioned as they are promoters of the “narrative”. The Trusted News Initiative was formed to ensure that the “wrong” news was not reported. Nothing is balanced anymore although the WSJ, Telegraph and Times do try to give a slighter truer slant to the news.
      
      Read up on Bandera and his Nazi collaboration during WW2 and how the Banderistas have persisted in Ukraine, how the US State Department (Victoria Nuland) set up the Maidan coup using these modern day Nazi’s and how they formed the bulk of the army armed by the US, their shelling of villages with Russian speaking citizens, the rape and torture at their hands, etc. They are not nice people.

      NMTB – Russia invaded Ukraine to protect the Russian speaking Ukrainians. They were being shelled, murdered, tortured and raped by the Azov (Nazi) troops in the Ukrainian army. I don’t think Putin was fishing one day and suddenly thought it would be a good idea to invade Ukraine.
      
      Mearsheimer that Clan linked to is really worth listening to. He was the US Ambassador to Moscow at one time and is currently a Prof in the study of international politics.

  Sadly many citizens dont understand geopolitics and arent able to connect the dots between Russia and China and that China is supporting Russia in order to weaken the West for the time when it attacks Taiwan and having done that sets its eyes on the Pacific including Australia and NZ.
  China sees Australia as a future mineral and food resource and NZ as a food resource.
  The child like trust that China is our friend and just wants to trade with us never ceases to amaze and amuse me. China is playing a long game a very long game. Its aim is to dominate command and control. Those who think otherwise are naive fools.

    Also, China has 200x the boat building capacity of the USA, 50% of the world’s steel capacity and 114 million fighting age men.

    China is screwed. It’s economy is in dire shape – depression level stuff with 40-50% of young adults out of work, huge waves of business failures and all the associated pain. They have been pumping their economy with a vast real estate debt bubble for a decade and it’s all collapsing – with many houses already halving in value and once busy commercial areas starting to resemble ghost towns. Important also to understand that all their official economic stats are fabrications and lies – their GDP is probably about a third less than officially reported making their debt problem vastly worse.
    
    Then there is their demographic collapse – with about 3x as many 50 year olds as 5 year olds, They officially claim 1.41billion, but reality is closer to 1.28 (See Li Fuxian), with almost all the ‘missing’ under 30 years old. Their population is already dropping, rapidly in the case of fertile women, and exacerbated by 10-20% excess males due to sex-selection abortion.
    
    Their shrinking workforce supporting growing elderly population is going to sink them even harder. Such demographics are very unfavorable to war, though the huge surplus of young men is very de-stabilising.
    
    They are never going to transition to western levels of wealth at this rate – insurmountable debt and shrinking population that won’t sustain demand or over-built infrastructure, as well as bad government that has ensured the rest of the world will move away from Chinese trade.
    
    It’s possible that China will become hegemonically belligerent, but in last year they have noticeably toned down their rhetoric as the economic consequences have become manifest, and the ‘wolf-warrior’ diplomacy has been largely ousted. Emperor Xi’s dynasty is in the shit, possible he won’t survive this downturn.

  Pragmatism rules. There is good reason to be terrified of nuclear war – which could set the world back 50 years in a day, and has led to the very incrementalist growth in western support for Ukraine as everyone slowly gets more convinced Russia won’t go nuclear, and we see how militarily weak they are, revealed as ‘second best army in Ukraine’. It’s entirely fair to see the war as a REALLY BAD IDEA, though on balance I think it is worth fighting both as a demonstrated line-in-the-sand against superpower belligerence (looking at you China), and to hopefully speed transition of former USSR to better governance.
  
  This is the last gasp of the USSR as the remains undergo demographic and economic and educational collapse from 30 years of kleptocratic mafia government. This war has only hastened that, causing loss of millions of young to emigration and war, and creating a human deficit in capabilities that is going to sink their oil & gas + infrastructure industries even faster (they have been heavily reliant on foreign tech and competence), and it is being fought using near-exhausted stocks of antiquated and mostly unserviceable cold-war weapons that once gone will mostly end their ability to militarily bully their neighbours and internal regions with conventional war. Future political arrangements will have to become more benign, not backed by force.
  
  Russia desperately needs good non-corrupt government if it is to have a prosperous non-Balkanised future, so my hope is that as Moscow loses power in this losing war we see a shift towards Europe as regions proximal to Europe get converted to prosperous industrial democracies servicing the labour needs of richer Europe – as has happened in eastern Europe over last 30 years.

    Why can’t the superior NATO provided air defence stop the Russian missiles and drones? The hypersonic Kinzhals etc.
    What has happened to all the other superior NATO equipment given to Ukraine? All those tanks that have never made it to the Russian army’s first defensive line – multi-million dollar tanks destroyed by 1000 dollar drones!
    The ratio of personnel losses is being reported as 10:1 in Russia’s favour by independent observers? So many lost that the powers in Ukraine want to press gang teenagers and women into their dwindling army.
    I have read that about 600 000 Russians emigrated at the beginning of the war where as so many Ukrainians have that the commentators assess up to 12 million may have gone.
    
    Russia has specifically stated it will go nuclear if they face an existential threat.

      Something like 3-400km² in last three months (look at all green on this map https://deepstatemap.live/en#9/48.3463/36.4197), 10-15km into their primary strategic objective of the southern front in a couple of places and, significantly, breaking defenses in a couple of places in recent days – Robotnye and Urozhaine but more important they have been attriting Russian forces. materiel and logistics capacity at a high rate, leading to noticeable decline in Russia’s combat capabilities. Russia are steadily losing ground in the south, even while throwing everything they have at the Ukrainians, committing reserves, ceasing troop rotations – which the Ukrainians have not. At some point they will likely exhaust and collapse as is typical in trench warfare.
      
      Only Patriots missiles are capable of intercepting Khinzals and other ballistic missiles re-entering at 3-4km/s with only 10-20s between detectability and impact, but patriot battery has to be within 5-10km of target and with only a few batteries they can only defend a few cities. But Kinzhal and other expensive low-production rate russian missiles are woefully inaccurate (30-70m CEP) making them near useless as anything other than terror weapons when not tipped with nukes, and Russia is running very low on stocks. Lower speed cruise missiles are almost all being shot down.
      
      Most trackers are counting about 2-4x Russian losses compared to Ukrainian, highest ratios for all-important artillery where Russia are losing about 600 guns a month as well as a few hundred more to wear and tear from an inventory of only a few 1000. That is totally unsustainable in both materiel and loss of gun crews. Tanks have not proven very useful due to minefields and vulnerability to drones – With Russia having lost >4000 to date. It is slow creeping gains by Ukraine as paths through minefields have to be cleared by hand.
      
      You’re dreaming if you think casualties are in Russia’s favour (independentski observerski’s my arse). Their tech deficit, poor comms, poor training, ill discipline, shoddy equipment, weak reconnaissance support (compared to USA intelligence provide to Ukraine) and lack of logistical support or effective medivac translates into far higher casualty rates and soviet style ‘meat wave’ assault tactics backed by officers who shoot anyone who refuses lead to extremely high combat loses. Russia are cutting corners everywhere in supporting their frontline forces.
      
      A few leaks of Russian casualty figures have shown how bad things really are – common to hear intercepted conversations of soldiers bemoaning 50-80% casualty rates. Russia’s prewar professional soldiers are nearly all gone. To date Russia has lost something close to 250k KIA and likely 2-3x that many wounded. Ukraine likely around half that. Currently attritional warfare on relatively stable front lines is strongly favouring Ukraine – only when they press offense do the numbers come close to parity.
      
      Russia won’t use nukes – any even limited exchange would see most of their population dead of starvation in 6-12 months. Their military would simply refuse (as has happened several times in the past when mistaken firing orders were given during cold war).

The politics of criticism in women’s football? Really?

Dana Johannsen, often a sensible commentator, has suggested we’re not allowed to criticise women’s football lest it be seen as misogyny!

“Against that backdrop, pundits need to consider carefully how they couch any criticism of women’s sport so as not to belittle the on-field product.”

So confused – on the one hand, we’re told how girls can do anything, how these are “the world’s best footballers” (and one person who complained that all the best footballers were men, therefore those are false statements, was shut down), yet on the other we’re told we’re not allowed to criticise them, or belittle the on-field product.

I’ll have a go then. The on-field product is rubbish, embarrassingly so. Even the very best teams at this tournament would be thrashed by the Rosmini College First XI, as has been proven many times. The lack of coordination, instinct, speed and power are shown in stark relief, and at times their efforts are hugely comical. The New Zealand team in particular are awful, scoring one goal in three games against average opposition ain’t going to cut it, and prior to this event it had been many years since we won a competitive match.

We are told that if we point out the many clear essential differences between individuals and groups of individuals we are bigots, but at the same time we need to make room for people who are different from us, and the more different the better.

  They need to fold the women’s WC into the men’s tournament. It works well for the slams in tennis, Olympics etc and would be far more cost effective. The quality is so poor in women’s soccer it’s not worthy of a stand-alone tournament.

    No because it’s all about the top level. Not.
    If you don’t want to watch it, don’t. Women cannot physically match men in any sport – including endurance running (which has been held up as an outlier because a top woman won an open race which no top men attended).
    But recognise that sport is good for society and girls playing sport is for the large part driven by them seeing top women’s sport. And maybe stop putting women down for having physical characteristics they have no say in.

  Lodden I dont know what you’re expecting but these are the best women players on the planet. Just like at the tennis grand slams, sometimes the womens matches are better contests to watch – think of some of those men matches that are foul fests or in tennis ace fests. Of course the mens game is so much faster and physical but that can be comical to watch at times too with all the diving.
  The womens world cup, most teams pass the ball around with a lot of skill and the game seems to have improved a lot. Of course the ball isnt struck with as much power and the pace is slower but I dont know what youre expecting, Ive found most of the contests good to watch.

It doesn’t always assume influence so…..sometimes it does. The black rock deal is a “partnership” with nz govt according to the headline. And yet we haven’t been told what’s in the deal and what we are giving up. And ironically black rock announced a deal with nz Anz yesterday also. And they already have one with asb.

We haven’t seen what’s in the contract with black rock or Pfizer. But we know after the Pfizer contract our lives were turned upside down and our rights were taken.

Given the government says it’s a partnership

For instance, Russia was raped of its assets by the foreign oligarchs in the post-Soviet era under a drunken puppet called Boris Yeltsin, when it became “liberalised” after the Cold War. Things that make you shake your head in wonder: in 2021 two Australian soldiers got permission to go fishing in a Northern Territory river, in an inflatable. They decided to have a swim (yes, really) and were immediately attacked by a crocodile. One of them had a knife and both got away, albeit injured. They are now suing the Australian Defence Force and the Government for a million bucks. I’d have thought the other way round would be more appropriate, on behalf of the estate of the euthanised crocodile.

And Oz’s Health and safety in the workplace outfit (ComCare?) is taking ADF to court for failing to train, warn etc about the dangers of swimming in croc infested waters! So – if an Aussie soldier gets run over when crossing the road – will they take ADF to court for not providing appropriate training in the dangers of crossing the road??? Just stupidity.

The Nats’ obeisance to this ideology confirms what a bunch of weak-minded liberals they are.

And there’s worse to come! “Radhakrishnan said the Government was also committed to exploring the inclusion of ethnicity in pay gap reporting as Māori, Pacific peoples and other ethnic groups often faced the compounding impact of both gender and ethnic pay gaps.”

It would be a miracle if there weren’t “ethnic pay gaps” in NZ, considering ethnic differences in school attendance and educational achievement. Let’s see if the Nats sign up for this one too – my bet is yes they will.

  An Australian company I worked for for many years used to send an annual report to the Government, detailing all the “gender equity” initiatives carried out in the period covered. We would get a copy of this report as well. The funny thing was that the only female employed there was the Manager, who was also the compiler of the said report. Apparently such reports are required by law in Australia.

Sounds like the gang members need a soothing massage or a visit to the therapist, doesn’t it.
They have just either murdered an opposing gang member or had a member of their gang murdered.
Bullets are going to fly and only extraordinary luck will prevent it.
However, the media will continue to peddle the line that to suggest hardline policing is racist.
Gangs are not Maori, they are gangs in many cases made up mainly of Maori.
Unless we treat gangs as criminal activity, and not some racial problem, it will continue to get worse.
Gangs work by using peer pressure and gang status, getting out is never going to be easy.
Let’s stop helping them to gain notoriety and making excuses for ruthless criminals.

  My dad died of a massive heart attack 3 days after taking a booster shot. Heart attacks are hereditary and he is the first and only person in the family to have had one. It was a text book vaccine death as reported by millions of people all over the world. At his funeral it was accepted by most that the vaccine killed him yet there was not one person who suggested it be looked at. The consensus was “if you’re dumb enough to take the boosters then you live, or not, with the consequences”. I naivety believe if you die unnaturally you get an autopsy and investigation but that’s not the case, they just bury you and move on. Nobody cares. Like most people at his funeral, if I could say one last thing to him it would be “you’re a f ing idiot”.

    There should have been an autopsy. Do you know if he had a myocardial infarction, ie coronary arteries blocked by a clot? The reason I am asking is that IIRC the Pfizer vaccine used in New Zealand tends to be associated with myocarditis, not blood clots. In contrast the Johnson and Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccines were associated with blood clots.

      I have a friend – 50, super fit, rus with her dog most days – or used to.
      Since the Pfizzer she has blood clots, at her age they won’t put her on blood thinners as a prophylactic so she has to wait for them to form and go to the hospital. Truly terrifying stuff for a single mother with 2 pre teen kids (the father died a few yrs back). Four times so far. The fourth time she wouldn’t go to the hospital (an hour away) as the kids are worried and she didn’t want to scare them, awaited till Monday to see her GP.

      After his heart attack they kept him on a ventilator for 3 days but could not get him to breath on his own and with family around turned off the machines. The hospital gave us 24 hours to move his body to a funeral home but as his wishes were to be cremated he was sent to the crematorium and burnt. Because everyone had been to him in hospital in his final days he was cremated within 24 hours of dying. There was no American movie style autopsy, they simply wrote that he suffered a major heart attack and threw him in the incinerator. With attitudes towards the Vax being what they are, even if he did have a full and thorough autopsy it would of been pointless as they will never blame the Vax. What really stands out to me is how easily Vax deaths can be covered up. Nobody really cares, especially those in the medical industry and it all happens so fast that by the time the fog of his death cleared it was too late. A mutual friends 21yo newphew died exactly the same way 3 days after his first jab. There’s no justice and there never will be, even when millions of people are reporting the same thing. Once you’re dead you’re dead, you can’t come back and chase justice and good luck to those around you in trying to even get answers.

  Food for thought – why do many say there are no 100% Maori in NZ but when one of these part-European/Maori people commits a crime they are quick to point out the Maoriness of the criminal?
  
  Racial bias is definitely a human condition to fight against. I know for myself, looking at the South African mother who murdered her children in Timaru that I feel a profound sense of horror and grief for her situation. But if this had been a part Maori/European person I know we would be seeing more race based comments on this crime. Those 3 little girls deserved a mother who was their carer not killer – no matter her race.

This week one KB commenter made the statement that they didn’t like that Alfred Ngaro’s New Zeal party brought religion into politics.

Did anybody else see the irony in this?

Ultimately all human activity is driven by our philosophy, world view, ideology. Over the past 50 years NZers ideological position has moved further and further from a Christian position. This has created a vacuum for an ever increasing number of alternative ideologies to take root. For me it is black and white, we either embrace God or we don’t. God is the anchor that holds us firm. How has the drift away from God been working out for our society?

I wish Alfred all the best, and firmly believe NZ would be better off if there was more Christian ideology in our parliament. However, the only meaningful way for NZ to move its ideological position is for individual kiwis to choose to love God with all their heart, and soul, and mind.

So KBers, my perspective is it ultimately doesn’t matter if you vote National, Act, Labour, New Zeal etc. The biggest thing we can do to turn our country around is ensure our individual ideology is sound and is a blessing to our family, friends, communities, country.

  In my view, evangelical religious types are so consumed with their own self righteousness that they believe any other view unconscionable. This then leads to rigid dogmatic adherence to some rules that the religion puts in place.
  
  For example Afghanistan. Or Iran. Or the witch hunts. Not places I want to live, or a time in history I want to return to.
  
  You should note I said “religion”. Not “Christianity”.
  
  You should also note that nowhere did I say religion should be purged from society. Practice whatever religion you like. Hold whatever religion views you want, politician or not.
  
  But I don’t favour any political group or movement that wants government to be adherent to a religious dogma. Because that tends to lead to that government holding tainted views of anyone who doesn’t align with that dogma.
  
  Take your statement:

  So if someone chooses to love Buddha, that’s no good? Ranginui? They’re all sky fairies. Are you suggesting someone who holds no religion at all is not, and cannot be good?

  The big question is whether you would condemn someone who doesn’t.

    Rouppe – thanks for engaging in debate and for standing by your argument.
    
    Firstly, I believe it is abhorrent to condemn others who don’t share my views. Belief or faith is an individual choice and I believe you should make your own choice in what you believe. God lights the fire in a man’s heart so I don’t believe it is my place to force others to comply with my faith. God asks us to love him but we are not compelled to do so.
    
    I do believe that there is only one true God and Jesus is the only way to be reconciled to God. I also believe there is a blessing in sitting under the authority of God – both individually and collectively. I would like our society to enjoy this blessing.
    
    Your comment about sky fairies suggests that you don’t believe in a spiritual realm. I do. There are definitely forces of good and evil at work in our world. Pretending they don’t exist doesn’t stop them effecting you.
    
    The irony that I see in your comment about religion not belonging in politics is that our current Government has been busy ramming their religion of Cultural Marxism, Covidology and Climatology down our throats and condemning all of us that dont subscribe to their ideology. Make no mistake, this is a religious movement – a false religion – one that enables the wolves to tear at the sheep.
    
    We all subscribe to ideologies and philosophies – there is no escaping that – in my opinion we are all ultimately living under some religion. The question is what are those ideals grounded in? Are the toxic to others? Do they lead to a richer or poorer society?

        I was brought up Catholic. I went to church every Sunday where (originally) I had to listen to someone with their back to me speak in a language I didn’t understand, and watch my parents who had emigrated here in the 50’s from Europe with pretty much the clothes on their backs and 1 suitcase give money to keep them. I’ve watched plenty of people who go to church on Sunday, rip people of Monday to Friday.
        
        I went to a Catholic boys school, where every week or month or whatever it was I had to go to the chapel to confess my sins. Where I was taught that I was a sinner just for existing. Where God was almighty and forgave all sins.
        
        I would sit there in the chapel waiting my turn and think “I’ve done nothing that an almighty God would be interested in. I haven’t done anything full stop. I’m actually going to have to make something up here. And that’s just stupid”.
        
        I would hear about the crime going on around me and wonder why God would allow that to happen and yet want to know whether I’d talked back to my mother. The consequences of which came not from God, but my father.
        
        And while I thankfully graduated from that school as dux without being interfered with, I lately became aware that it was those same Christians with what you call their “ethical position” that were in charge of Epuni Boys home, and others, where the worst abuses imaginable were inflicted on children. Those same Christians who ran the “homes for wayward girls” who took babies from their mothers and sold them.
        
        So don’t talk to me about your high and mighty ideals. I do know what I’m talking about. If you want to clutch on to your religion, wrap yourself with its cloak of self righteousness, go for it.
        
        But its the height of arrogance, and ignorance, to attest that those who don’t follow your footsteps cannot be on the same path.

Even someone like you who was allegedly brought up as a Catholic still apparently doesn’t have a clue about what Christianity is really all about. You seem to be talking about your experience with people, not demonstrating any deeper theological understanding. So people aren’t perfect and therefore they are sometimes inclined to do bad things?         I am completely comfortable with the way I live my life, treat and respect others. Yet here you are, denigrating me because despite being completely immersed in Catholicism growing up, I haven’t held onto it.
        
        You should take time to reflect on the teachings you say you are so knowledgeable about, particularly those on acceptance of others

      Of course religion belongs in politics. In fact, politics is about ethics on the collective level, and you cannot claim an ethical position if you can’t ground it in a world with an intrinsic ethical aspect to it. If you only believe in blind matter in the void, and reject all transcendence of the material, then you can’t have an ethical position that isn’t completely subjective and arbitrary. What is a piece of legislation if it isn’t a moral statement (i.e. x is right, while y is wrong)? The body of Western law has a metaphysical presupposition without which the laws fall apart as being completely arbitrary.

        Rubbish. Laws and ethics , religious or otherwise, are just codifying evolutionarily optimized systems for interactions between humans that create societies stronger than those that don’t use them. They confer competitive advantage over more anarchic systems. We see similar behaviours and quasi-laws of behaviour in chimps and other social animals.
        
        And religion is just a useful evolved psychological mechanism to convince otherwise intelligent rational animals to willingly risk their lives or die in the service of their tribe/near-gene pool’s interests. Human tribes/states/empires that had strong religious convictions defeated those that didn’t. See for example the critical role of religion in modern armed forces.

        If good and evil aren’t aspects of physical matter, then they have to come from some other “realm” that isn’t material. How can there be good and evil if everything is only matter? To even talk about moral qualities like good and evil is to presuppose an immaterial aspect to the world. Ethics is practical reason – it is about actions. The actions of people are good or evil, not people themselves.
        
        It is typical of atheists or anti-religionists to paint themselves as logical whereas theists or religionists aren’t. The problem is, because logic isn’t material, to even attempt to employ logic is to necessarily employ something immaterial. Because truth or falsity are logical properties, and logical properties are immaterial, you can’t even have truth or falsity in a materialist’s worldview.

  Any party which is based solely on one topic is not worth consideration.
  
  The original Greens concentrated on the environment to the exclusion of all else: they were useless at education, finance, health, law and order etc.
  
  To be honest, I have no idea for what the current “Greens” stand.
  
  The current Maori Party is racist: their entire raison d’etre is that maori blood, in any amount, real or imagined, trumps everything else. All facets of NZ life are to be seen, and to act, through a maori lens. They see this as a strength, but I suspect that most others see it as racial rubbish.
  
  Mr. Ngaro wants to create a party based on religious principles ( presumably HIS religious principles ). If he has no other policies worked out and costed then he too will be doomed to failure. His religious principles seem to have taken a long time to urge him to enter the race.

  According to your link the “lie” is that Smith said he had ongoing investigations beyond the one where he’s recently indicted Trump for his post-election actions.
  
  But that indictment alone has six as-yet unindicated conspirators … who presumably are still being investigated. And Smith is also clearly investigating Trump’s fundraising around the 2020 election and Jan 6 etc. So there’s at least two plausible ongoing investigations that link to Trump’s communications.

      Smith applied for a warrant to get the data from Trump’s Twitter account (*).
      
      He also asked that the warrant require Twitter to not disclose to Trump that they had to hand over his account details. In US law there are 5 grounds the court can consider if asked for that sort of non-disclosure warrant, being whether disclosure would risk (quote):
      “(l) endangering the life or physical safety of an individual;
      (2) flight from prosecution;
      (3) destruction of or tampering with evidence;
      (4) intimidation of potential witnesses; or
      (5) otherwise seriously jeopardizing an investigation or unduly delaying a trial.”
      
      The subsequent Appeals Court said the District Court granted the non-disclosure because if Trump knew of the warrant he’d have “an opportunity to destroy evidence, change patterns of behavior, [or] notify confederates.” So basically reasons 3, 4 and 5 above.
      
      Twitter appealed the non-disclosure part. The Appeal Court rejected Twitter’s appeal in all parts. You can read that ruling at https://www.cadc.uscourts.gov/internet/opinions.nsf/64C651B4E1AD395485258A06005B09BD/$file/23-5044-2011549.pdf
      
      Nowhere in that ruling can I see any finding by the Court that Jack Smith used inaccurate information, or any admission by Jack Smith that he did that.
      
      So I really don’t see what the article you’ve linked to stands on. Except that it was provocatively written to lie to you to make you angry.
      
      (* Note that the data Smith was after is from after Musk re-instated Trump’s Twitter account. That’s interesting because Trump hasn’t tweeted on that account since then. But the speculation is that he’s used Twitter’s direct messaging. Which isn’t encrypted like WhatsApp or Signal are, and so Twitter has the plain-text of all those messages).

    For one thing, people are only charged with “conspiracy to do x” when they haven’t actually done x. It is the charge that is laid when no crime has taken place. Relatedly, if Jan 6th was an “insurrection” like they keep telling us it was, then why has nobody been charged with insurrection? I don’t care if Trump is guilty of anything he is accused of – the only reason he is being charged is for political reasons, as can be convincingly demonstrated by all of the the other times charges haven’t been laid against other prominent people. Discussing the ins and outs of the legal case as if that matters the most just misses the point.

  When Trump won in 2016, Pelosi was off to a junket in Brussels for some leftist bullshit. Trump said fine, but you are not taking Air Force One.
  93 passengers of relatives and lefties. Plane was chokka with booze and food. Accommodation all set up in Europe (it was not just Brussels) 93 people in two buses driving around DC because they were not allowed onto the Airbase.

  Means testing includes income and assets, so if effectively a wealth tax. If only income is counted, then those with means will just move stuff around. Including sell up and spend up. Unless they don’t care if their pension reduces or disappears completely, there will be plenty of those folk already paying top marginal tax rate.
  
  Meanwhile a complicated and expensive valuation system will be set up. Happy accountants.
  
  Some time ago Mary Holm, writing in the Herald, after receiving questions about why those still working should also get the pension. She talked to IRD who said it would cost more to run than any savings.

David Seymour has been a major hit with the school children in his electorate this week – he went to st cuths with Chloe swarbrick and other electorate nominees and 98% of the girls voted for him after a debate held at the school. On another day, he joined the boys at Auckland grammar to do a pre ball skit on stage – said labour had caused inflation even with one dollar lolly bags from the tuck shop and then kids acting as security escorted him off the stage while he cried out about freedom of speech – thoroughly entertaining by all accounts and the boys loved it! Some of the teachers looked like they were sucking lemons lol!! Love your work David – keep going!!! Not long to go 💙😊

Over the Hill and far away …

On Red Radio I hear the Kim Hill show. Wow it’s about a technology start-up that wants to lead the world.

As a tiny, long-shot punter who’s watched start-ups, I try a routine PPRS check on the firm. The Companies Office takes my measly couple of dollars for the PPSR check, and then says, sorry out of action. An omen?

Ratu Craig Te Ahurangi Mataira, one of the two directors of Open-Star Technologies, was on Kim Hill’s talk show this morning speaking about his quest to lead the world lead in cold fusion.

This is an astonishingly ambitious project, and good luck to Mataira and those backing him. In goals this is up there with Edison and Steve Jobs. Perhaps higher still.

Shareholders listed in Open-Star Technologies are: Mataira-Cole (full name) 62.71 per cent; the fairly widely owned Icehouse Ventures, an NZ “seed capital” (i.e. start-up) investor, 23.08 per cent; and a few similar investors, including Ngai Tahu with a stake of just 0.48 per cent – perhaps a token, for “Cole” has long been a name within the tribe).

Mataira worked with the Robinson research institute at Victoria University. It’s working on high temperature superconductors. These are central to Open-Star’s strategy.

Robinson Institute is a distant descendant of the high temperature superconductor studies of Industrial Research Ltd, a former “Crown entity”, and before that the Government’s DSIR.

Superconductors powerful enough to create the super-strong magnets that might allow economic cold fusion, are a key to the Mataira approach, he explained in the Hill interview at RNZ today.

Dunedin automation and robotics company, Scott Technology, quit HTS-110, its dip into high-temperature superconductors in 2021 after 10 years. Robinson Research Institute does development and research for HTS-110. Booster, a Government-appointed default Kiwisaver provider, is now the investor in HTS-110, with a 50 per cent stake.

An aside. One of the names associated with IRL was that of Shaun Hendy. IRL appointed Hendy its first “Industry and Outreach Fellow” with the project of building “a complex system modelling group at IRL that can use advanced mathematical methods to characterise, model and understand the New Zealand innovation ecosystem and its relationship with the world economy”.

Yep, the Hendy of Covid epidemic fame. His team at Auckland University’s Te Punaha Matatini research unit was paid $6 million to model the epidemic (second link below).

  The headline reads “Maori physicists try to recreate fusion energy on Earth”.
  
  Maori physicists – the noun is plural?

    As it was only announced today that seems strange. I do know one or two nurses who didn’t comply but made the mistake of undermining the hospital by advising patients not to get jabbed. They won’t be coming back but that’s nothing to do with mandates, just about undermining your employer !

Well she did have poor ratings…. But national mp’s need to realise anything they say that can give them bad press will be well and truly amplified, but still laughing the guy reply chucks Aaron Gilmore’s name into it.

National leader Christopher Luxon says one of his MPs’ online comments regarding a former Today FM staffer were “insensitive and inappropriate”.

It comes after former Today FM host Tova O’Brien tweeted a column she wrote for Stuff, writing “Why National is distancing the party from Christopher Luxon’s trust deficient personal brand”.

In reply, National MP Chris Penk wrote: “Sorry but your poor ratings crashed an entire radio station”.

So the new trend going around the western world is ‘cultural appropriateness’.

This means that not only can you have $40k farewell parties and corned beef boxes as gifts, if you wish you can request a Mussie doctor if you are a mussie or a Maori nurse if you are tangata whenua etc.

Hiring practices of entire civil institutions will be reworked to ensure this capability is present and available – rather than a purely merit-based approach.

Look out though if your request for culturally appropriate, for you, requests offend the elites – then you will be cancelled and made to suffer the consequences.
