Brooke Van Velden getting so deep under Ayesha Verrals skin yesterday, she caused her to start yelling with rage. Thought she was going to cry at one point.

Verral out of her depth as usual. It’s a hard watch – shes not exactly articulate… Exactly what you would expect for someone that falsified a report in return for a list placing that has now landed her a 300k minister role.

This race based criteria for Healthcare is classic socialism. Create equality by dragging the higher performers down to level of the low performers, in this case to address the life expectancy gap between whites and blacks.

How about you address the health issues in the low performing group, starting with reducing the amount of booze and smokes ingested onto a bed of takeaways instead of letting them do whatever and oh don’t worry, you have fucked everything up but you will get treatment first.

While you are doing that, perhaps you could build some more hospitals as well? Hows that working out in Dunedin?

    Health care is now prioritized based on the colour of a person’s skin.
    
    You know, the same way the whole world is having a racial wedge jammed through it.
    
    Maori and pacific islanders = blacks
    White people = whites.

      The white v black arguments never ever seem to identify the one major difference between what are considered to be the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots.’
      All of the haves belong to societies that had a written language while the have nots didn’t.
      Add to this, the fact that Europeans and Asians were constantly being subjected to the scientific benefits that occurred because of this fact.

  Verbal [Verrall] says one of the things her party has done to reduce the gap in life expectancy between Maori and European is voting for the smoke free legislation. She knows the real root causes. However the smoke free legislation applies to all, not just Māori.

    But it’s also linked to their higher-than-average tendency to engage in hazardous alcohol drinking and their higher-than-average use of drugs like P.

      To date the discussion around the Treaty of Waitangi has focussed on the first two articles and disputes over ownership of land and taonga, and whether Maori were ceding sovereignty to the Crown.
      It is worth not losing sight of Article 3, which, translated into English from the Maori version, reads as follows:
      “The Third
      For this agreed arrangement therefore concerning the government of the Queen, the Queen of England will protect all the ordinary people of New Zealand and will give them the same rights and duties of citizenship as the people of England.”
      The notion of reciprocity between rights and duties is an important one. In the health context, for example, we are told that many of the inequities around Maori arise from circumstances within their control; weight and diet give rise to diabetes and heart issues, for example. Maori fail to attend appointments and take prescribed medication more than non-Maori. Maori smoke more. While factors such as poverty and isolation obviously play a part, the exercise of responsibility both at individual and collective level would go a long way to minimising the impact. Likewise with criminal offending. The duty for all to follow the law is enshrined in the Treaty, by consent, not just in criminal statutes. The Treaty does not distinguish between races in this imposition of duties and rights. All New Zealanders had the rights and duties of a citizen of England, and those rights and duties continue in force to this day, with no distinction between tangata whenua and tangata tiriti. It is worth remembering this when accuastions of racism are being bandied about. Is it racist to hold all citizens to the same obligations and afford them all the same rights? Clearly not.     This is what you get with bi-modal distributions.
    
    A blanket policy can impact different groups differently because the underlying characteristics of the group can be different.
    
    So, to be flippant, if you were to make special policies for KFC eaters then they would end up impacting Maori more than whites.
    
    The same is true for all the diseases and conditions that impact Maori more than others. For example: if you take on bowel cancer, mental health or gonorrhoea with blanket policies then you’d be giving Maori a lift.
    
    What is highly problematic is going one step further and selecting individual patients on a racial basis.

Has it been explained how Newshub obtained details of Chris Luxon’s wife buying a Tesla and claiming the rebate?

Hopefully there is a reasonable explanation. Otherwise hopefully surely a public servant managing the rebates didn’t notice the name “Luxon” in the system and passed the info on to Newshub …. or the Labour Party?

Can Chris Hipkins reassure us that his own senior MP’s or inner circle had nothing to do with this potential privacy breech?

As for Newshub, since when has the private lives of politicians families been a target? Normally that only happens when family members put themselves “out there” in the public domain (like Clarke G.). But in this situation this is not the case.

Does Newshub need to provide an explanation? Perhaps the rest of the Press Gallery can do some digging?

Given the purpose eligibility criteria is clearly listed on the link page would hitting the “continue” button not be an attempt to fraudulently initiate a claim for which you had no entitlement?     So, nevermind cost of living crisis and Labour borrowing more now than they did during covid which will have ramifications for years to come, or the health and education systems falling apart under Labour’s watch or Labour enabling divisions within society all over the place … looks like Newshub is more interested in “gotcha” when it comes to National and Luxon.
    
    Eg so even though it isn’t technically Chris Luxon’s car they still run the story as a “gotcha”, rather than politely inquiring of him beforehand (off camera) to find out the situation … and even then they don’t have the good grace to walk back the story!
    
    Good grief, it’s a race to the bottom, which MSM outlet will be the “winner”?!!!

  It’s well past time that National / ACT stopped thinking they are going to get a fair go from the media.
  
  As soon as the media start targeting politicians family members, then the gloves should be off. How about National / ACT start getting some dirt on how many members of the media used the rebate to get a nice new Tesla? You can bet your bottom dollar that many in the media including the talking bobble heads that are leading the prosecution of this ‘crime’ will have used exactly the same rebate.
  
  Not a Trump fan but his media strategy of treating the left wing media with utter contempt is quite a good one.
  
  National in particular should consider stop trying to please this hostile media – ridicule them at every opportunity. Stop giving them any credibility – call them out for the left wing government supporting henchmen that they are.

        Seymour, until the last election, had sole responsibility and could explore and promote policy that National couldn’t, certainly not in the same way.
        The Greens can always float in directions that are only supported by their most radical members.

      Wayne, I do respect that you come on to this blog and putting reasonable and well thought through points of view across. I don’t always agree with you, but I do think your contribution is valuable and I’m always keen to read your thoughts.
      
      Believe me, I am no Trump fan. However, I believe there are some broad lessons from how his media strategy has effectively neutered the left wing media bias in the US. Very different countries, but I believe there are some similarities and National and ACT would be wise to at least consider how he has managed this.
      
      Being a tad unfair, I would characterise the National media strategy to be one where they believe that if they play nice with the media, maybe, just maybe, the media will give them a fair crack of the whip someday. In my opinion, this ‘centrist’ approach aimed at not spooking ‘middle NZ’ is not really working. It relies on the belief that the media will be fair and reasonable. As we can see with the constant attacks on National and Luxon, the nasty cartoons on a daily basis in Stuff, the spinning over apparent leadership unease in the National caucus when the polls don’t show him as preferred PM, dragging Luxon’s wife into the media glare due to her audacity to buy a car (surely a privacy act breach?), and turning the Wood fiasco on it’s head to the point where I caught the tail end of an RNZ interviewer grilling a National MP and somehow turning this into an attack line on the opposition and asking if they are clean regarding shares and totally forgetting National aren’t currently in power. There are so many other issues I could list which clearly show a media that are no longer ever pretending to be even handed.
      
      National are obviously happy playing the media in an old school approach. I personally don’t think it’s working.
      
      I think they would do very well to bring in some aspects of Trumps approach. It may not be nice but it is effective against a media that are clearly ‘for the other side’. It bypasses the media – it gets the message directly to the voters – it doesn’t need the media to like him, the fact they don’t actually increases his support. He also makes the media think twice about attacking him – when someone is going to hit you back you tend to be careful with your punches. It doesn’t stop them, but it does make them think twice. There are clearly similarities between how the left wing US media view Trump and how the left wing NZ media view Luxon.
      
      All I am arguing is that a bit more offence on the media strategy is probably better than playing a defensive strategy and hoping the media will eventually like you. It’s not going to happen.
      
      As a final point – I’d also suggest that the desire for NZ to avoid Trump style politics is a little late. Trump style politics are already here to an extent – it’s just being practiced by the left. Consider how our open and balanced media have treated any number of issues in the last year. Think how they treated the Kellie-Jay Keen / Posie Parker speech with older women literally being smashed by thugs while the police did sweet f.a.? Or how about women’s groups being banned from public facilities due to the fear of the rabid-left nuts disrupting the event? How about the left actively pursuing disenfranchisement of equality of suffrage with barely a whimper being raised by the media on democracy being undermined?
      
      When you have a media that barely raises an eyebrow at all these issues and would rather do the ‘gotcha’ narrative on the leader of the oppositions wife buying a tesla, I believe continuing to play nice with the media in the hope that enough nice and sensible NZ middle of the road voters are going to vote for you is not a wining strategy.
      
      I am sure that National will continue to try to play by the old school rules and avoid antagonising the media – and I completely respect that and hopefully they and ACT get across the line in October.
      
      But let’s not pretend that Trump style politics are not already here.

        I think it should also be pointed out that, while not being as aggressive as Trump, De Santis has adopted a similar approach of going around the MSM as much as possible. Certainly he’s ignoring the NYT and WaPo as far as possible and they’re somewhat “offended” by that.
        
        And in the same way I see that Justice Alito was smart the other day in dealing with a hit job on him and the Supreme Court in general from the Far Left assholes, ProPublica. Sent a list of questions for him to comment on in regards to an “article” they’re writing, he responded to them by publishing his response in the WSJ, thereby screwing their cherry-picking of what he said.
        
        Nice to see some on the Right finally figuring this out.

        Trump is running a more left-wing campaign than his republican rivals. He is, of course, almost certainly lying when he claims he would protect social security and Medicare, cut military spending, and be more liberal about abortion, but none of his rivals would have the courage to call out those policies as being 100% counter to the GOP message.
        For the foreseeable future, conservatism in the US will continue to be whatever Trump has just babbled.

      Own it, be forthright and move on. That’s what I believe people want to hear from him. Stop pandering to the center voters that are on the fence by trying not to offend them, and coming off wish washy and show some conviction.

    If you use a public website it’s not a crime. If you enter someone else’s plate on that website is not a crime. If that website tells you that the car is not able to be processed through their system it’s not a crime.
    
    The only crime would have been if the rebate had not been claimed and the journalist had completed the claim process. Which did not happen.
    
    Your suggestion is akin to saying there was a crime for picking up a bag of potatoes at the supermarket because you could walk out without paying for it.

  All along the Nats have said that it is the well-off folks who benefit from the ev subsidy…and the fact that his wife has claimed the Government benefit just illustrates their original claims.

        Strongly disagree. People understand how marriage works. Pretending he didn’t know she was going to buy a car is labour level bullshit. If he did know she was buying a Tesla he had the choice of saying ‘dont claim the rebate, im publicly against the policay and the media will use it to attack me’.
        
        As I have said multiple times, they should have claimed it and used it as an opportunity to attack stupid policy. Also not claiming it is stupid.

      Mostly correct, but, the rebate is not automatic. You have to apply for it.
      
      I too am opposed to the subsidy, but I still applied for it.
      
      I’ve just been through the process applying for the rebate on a small gas guzzler. The car was bought cash. The subsidy didn’t influence my decision one jot.
      
      I think the main purpose is virtue signalling: to be seen to be doing the right thing.
      
      There is no way the subsidy is really enough to make a car affordable or not.

  If a quarter of what has been said by the experts is true then this craft was a disaster waiting to happen.
  
  This was an experimental and uncertified craft. People going on the ride had to sign an inch-thick pile of waivers. If you’re going to do that and don’t get an independent engineering analysis then you’re a fool.
  
  I doubt very much that anyone survived whatever incident happened for more than a tenth of a second.
  
  All the submersibles I have ever looked at have always had a huge ballast weight that can be manually unscrewed, allowing the craft to bob to the surface. So one of the following are possible:
  * The craft was designed without such a ballast system. In which case you’d be a bloody idiot going onboard.
  * There was a massive catastrophic failure of the hull. Everyone died instantly. All telemetry died instantly and the hull sank away.
  * They are stuck in a net somewhere in midwater with broken comms and insufficient ballast to move it.
  
  But who really knows… The stories coming through the media are contradictory.

      The simplest, and safest, way to attach the ballast is to have an electromagnet holding it in place. The ballast can be anything at all that is magnetic and used scaffolding would be just fine.
      The way it works is that if you deliberately turn off the magnet the ballast will drop away and the submersible will rise.
      Alternatively if the power fails in the craft the same thing will happen. The loss of power will mean that the magnet is now not going to be working and so the ballast will fall away.
      You are therefore far more likely to fail safely and come to the surface than you are if you actually have to do something to release your ballast after you have lost power on the craft.

      Exactly, I get claustrophobic even look at footage inside proper full-sized military submarines where there is room to walk around, flush toilets, and a disciplined Navy crew of a hundred who know how to repair most things and keep the gauges pointing to “normal”.

    My own theory is, that after multiple descents, the build up of pressure on the Carbon Fibre will have created minor imperfections that ultimately resulted in a single catastrophic failure, with instant fatalities of all passengers.

      Carbon fibre is extremely good under tension so is excellent for keeping pressure in (eg. aircraft cabins and spacecraft). How well it would perform under many cycles of compression is another matter.

    The reverse is also true, so if you’re going to have what is essentially an uncontrolled ascent from 4000m, some way of dealing with rapidly expanding air volume would be required. And that goes for air spaces in the human body as well

      No, that is not true. If that was true then at 20 metres the air would be a quarter of the volume.
      
      Air volume is inversely proportional to pressure.
      At 10 metres it is twice the pressure and half the volume.
      At 20 metres it is 3 times the pressure and a third of the volume.
      
      At 2km (about where they were when they lost contact), the pressure is around 200 times surface pressure and the volume is about 1/200 of what it is on the surface. At those pressures, if you open a scuba tank, the water would flow into the tank – the air would not come out. The air is also so thick that it won’t flow properly through the wee pipes in your lungs (the bronchioli) and you’d basically drown in air.

    I’ve read articles the sub has no emergency pinger, no GPS, the only method of communicating with it is via text message, and the hull can only be opened by unbolting it from the outside. So even if they could offload the ballast and bob to the surface, they’ll be trapped two feet from freedom with no oxygen and no way of getting out unless someone finds them.
    
    I don’t like to speak ill of the (probably) dead, but getting on board that floating deathtrap are 4 Darwin Award nominees and the king of all Darwin Award winners, the idiot CEO who designed it.

Football often features players feigning serious injury after a tackle with the hope of getting their opponent a yellow card. Players will not balk at getting an opponent a red card and having them sent off.

So there are a number of perverse incentives that could be used by an opponent in the wake of the NZ football team refusing to continue the game in the face of racial abuse.

An opponent is losing to the NZ team? What about racially abusing a NZ player in the hope of getting the game abandoned? If you know the NZ team won’t play in the face of racial abuse a weaker opponent could be tempted to use it as a tactic?

I think NZ football needs to have a big think before continuing to go down this route?

Is it just a case of the difference in intelligence and ability levels?

Seeing Kelvin Davis mumble his way through 10 minutes of pre written spin yesterday on how his ministry for failing children was going to review processes was a classic case in point. Hardly inspiring.

Turns out he had 2 weeks to practice that speech as well given he found out about the abuse 2 weeks ago, but didn’t feel the need to release it to the public until they could put a spin on it.

Over 40 odd years I have dealt with Ministers and Prime Ministers directly on a range of issues, small and significant. The sharpest and most helpful responders included Helen Clark, Venn Young, Mike Moore, Judith Collins.

I am trying to work with a prominent Minister in the current Cabinet over a straightforward but important matter, involving millions of dollars of exports.

I first wrote and called the Minister’s office one month ago. Written three letters and made three calls. Got a silly standard acknowledgement fill of ‘nga mihi’ rubbish but nothing more. Far and away the most useless and insulting non-response ever. They don’t care any more.

  Not quite the same Tomtoddy but after thirty years of permanent residence status I applied for citizenship, pretty much automatic at this stage, exactly a year ago . As I related before on KB I rang up about six months ago to find out what the hell was going on and the answer was nothing . I hadn’t even been assigned a case officer and was told that they were still dealing with those applicants from 6 months before me. To date I have nothing at all from them absolute silence now moving into its second year.

The beat up re the Luxon Tesla Rebate is a wonderful indication as to the level of political engagement in this country, and just how the MSM can promote a Narrative.

That a politician’s spouse can claim a legal entitlement, and have a legal act turned into some sort of scandal seems to me to speak to a narrative that elements of the Mainstream Media are out to get Luxon, and so far, the only scandal they have been able to pin on him is that his family claimed a rebate that they were legally entitled to do.

If the left didn’t want well off people claiming this entitlement, then they shouldn’t have put this measure in to begin with.

Regular attendance dropped as low as 40 percent in Term 2 of 2022 and had only recovered to 51 percent by the end of the year.

The report said challenging behaviour remained a significant issue – four in 10 principals were concerned that learner behaviour was worse than they would expect – about the same as in 2021.

Only one in five principals thought their schools had recovered from the disruptions caused by Covid-19.

Principals in poorer communities were nearly twice as likely to say their school had not recovered from Covid-19 disruptions.

  My biggest question here is whether Covid-19 disruptions are just a convenient excuse.
  
  I suspect the system was already on a downward slope before CV19 and there have also been other massive disruptors such as Tiktok.
  
  Bottom line though is that if you’re looking to schools and universities as places for quality education then you’re doing it wrong.

        C’mon 130ft isn’t much. 40 metres. Pah! Intermediate scuba club depth.
        
        It isn’t the pressure so much as the rapid change of pressure that causes problems at shallower depths (down to 200 metres or so). Beyond about 90 metres, the partial pressure of oxygen is too high and air becomes poisonous, which is also a factor.
        
        But when you’re at the depths that they were, over 2km deep, the pressure is over 200 bar (3000 psi). As those pressures the air is so thick it cannot flow through your bronchiole etc properly – preventing you from breathing. At those pressures air is poisonous so there’s not much point in breathing anyway.

  Comms was lost at about 2km deep. The water pressure there is about 200 bar (3,000 psi in the old money).
  
  If there was an immediate catastrophic failure (eg. a port hole which was only designed for 1.5km blew in) then the water inrush would be immediate. All the air inside the vessel would be immediate compressed to 1/200th its normal size.
  
  Since air could not travel down your wind pipe fast enough to equalise that would mean your lungs would be immediately squished to 1/200 of their normal size – turning them to soup. Ditto for the air in your sinuses and ears etc.
  
  Compressing the air to 200th the size immediately drives up the temperature too. For a few milliseconds, the air inside your lungs would heat to a few thousand degrees C.
  
  The shockwave of this would probably wipe your brain, heart and other organs immediately too.
  
  I suspect that would be very similar to other high pressure concussive trauma like when a bomb goes off in a bunker. From the outside the victims look unharmed, but internally they’re mush.
  
  This isn’t a medical issue it’s just the physics of what happens when you subject soft squish material (like humans) to immense pressure changes.
  
  Of course other scenarios are possible too.

The most damning evidence to date of vaccine heart damage and death

This is information deliberately not looked for in NZ or deliberately hidden when it looks like showing up.

INCH by agonising inch, we move closer to the denouement of the ‘safe and effective’ Covid vaccine tragedy.

It is agonising for doctors who believed the jab would help protect patients against serious illness; for people harmed and bereaved by the jabs, and for researchers who have been telling us for more than two years (see here, for example) that vaccines based on preparing the body to deal with SARS-CoV-2’s toxic ‘spike’ protein might cause the same type of damage as the virus itself.

Now, in a comprehensive nationwide South Korean study, an expert committee has confirmed 480 cases of vaccine-related heart inflammation (myocarditis), including 21 deaths, 12 of which were in young adults. Ninety-five of the 480 cases were classified as severe, most needing intensive care in hospital and one receiving a heart transplant.

In NZ? “Safe and effective and get your booster!”

The analysis may be the most comprehensive to date from anywhere in the world. The committee included seven cardiologists, helped by investigators in 16 regional centres who provided data from medical records. Physicians and health care staff were put under a legal obligation to report suspected adverse events from the jab.

I made a comment to this end a few days.

ANY sudden death should be compelled to check for vaccine involvement. Instead, anyone trying to report a potential negative adverse effect is deliberately discouraged from taking it further.

I know a few people who’s doctors have done this to them. They have found it incredibly difficult to get their injury taken seriously and ACC don’t want a bar of it.

As the opening paragraph above says:

Not in NZ. In this totalitarian country, every single MP in parliament continues to deny that there is any issue.
The evidence is already overwhelming, denial will only work for so long. The longer it takes the cowards in our health system and in parliament to acknowledge this, the bigger the backlash will be.

When it happens, it will make Michael Wood’s cock ups look totally benign.

    I wonder how vaccine mandates affect the quality of healthcare staff. They are forcing them to take an ineffective and dangerous therapy in order to practice. I would have thought that any healthcare professional worth their salt would not take that risk. The data is very clear.
    
    Therefore, poor medical knowledge and less than average intellectual ability are PREREQUISITES to become a medical professional in NZ. You actually have to be ANTI SCIENCE to practice medicine in NZ. Any guesses how that is going to turn out? What a sad joke of a country.

      @milton… Exactly. NZ is not considered a good go-to destination for medical pros right now.
      We see that in the medical/nursing staff shortages. Plus mandated medical staff still not able to work.

    I find it mildly amusing but of great concern about what the press do think is “news worthy ” from foreign parts to be disseminated to us Plebs .
    
    In Canada for example there’s been huge concern and reports of CCP influencing their elections . Now as a fellow 5 eyes , commonwealth and kin country this should be of major interest to us here , but nothing.( also compare the media obsession and lies re Russia / USA interference)
    
    USA ; the news we’re treated to is all about a silly bath tub toy going missing . Nothing about the nationwide carnage of so called Juneteenth holiday shootings .

I remember when

A Napier man who parked his car in his normal spot in front of his Bluff Hill garage in darkness was stunned to find yellow lines on road.

I guess it raises the interesting question as to whether you can be fined for obstructing your own access.

Since Chorus is newsworthy right now, I’ve noticed for some time all their workforce is ‘imported’ (at least in my province).

Why would installing Internet Fibre cables, from street level into homes, require employees who AREN’T White, or Maori, or Oriental?
(And I don’t believe for a minute those jobs are somehow too complex for locals to learn).

Well now we know the answer. Why bother hiring locals when Chorus can just call up “Chorus Shareholder”, Michael Wood (also Minister of Immigration) to get all the visas they want to import their entire workforce from South Asia.

Why bother paying higher wages to locals along with giving them some basic training. What a crazy idea!

So Wood was sitting there deciding which industries can import Cheap Labour with his special whoop-de-doo Visas, and — knock me down with a feather! — one of his own shareholdings was benefiting from his decisions.

  But stiff cheese at the start of the Chorus fibre installations the tech staff were almost all from the Philippines where a $NZ will get you 34 -35 Peso. Yes it was interesting hear Chippie mentioned the Wood/Immigration/Chorus when he had his press release about Wood finally resigning. Apparently Wood had the tech staff included in the Skilled workers covered by the changes.

  The guy that installed my fibre was Indian and did a great job. He wasn’t from street level India. Any connection with Wood is irrelevant to me.

  kevn, pharmacies do get payment for the jabs and is probably the reason they have ‘wear a mask’ signs on their doors. I just ignore the sign if I need to pick up a prescription or shop there.

Are there net gains in votes from backing Uber and New Zealand trucking companies in contractor rows?

These contract-drivers tend to have more get-up-and-go than conventional employees doing comparable work, and a small minority of the firms they are contracted to are miserable bastards.

Good Stuff article on Labour’s appalling mental health performance.

A general background to the article…. Heaps (billions) assigned by Labour to improve mental health care.

The article says most of this has gone on providing “practitioners” supplementing GPs for patients with mild mental symptoms. This has attracted nurses and psychologists away from hospitals and into these new roles, leaving hospitals short staffed.

Add to this distortion cited by the article, a vicious cycle as psychiatrists leave hospitals. The double and triple loads on remaining psychiatrists has them looking at the greener fields across the Tasman. The more leave, the worse it gets, the more leave …

HDPA going on about the sub and the fact that the world’s media and people are so interested shows we “care” about these 5.

Sorry but HDPA obviously lives in a media bubble ( no surprise there)
and she says how we react to this shows what kind of a person we are ,( apparently alot of folk are gloating that rich folks have died)

Me , I think the contrast of the media’s reaction to this relatively minor tragedy as compared to their reaction to the huge loss of life only the other day off Greece , says alot about the media and how they frame a narrative around nice , rich, white folk as opposed to poor third worlders.

And bear in mind that ferry tragedies ( which are quite common)in the third world get very little “news” coverage , relatively.

So who does “care” .

Only the relatives.

Gordon Yu, giving evidence against a fellow criminal in the killing of a meths gang chief, is shown to have come to New Zealand on a a student visa in 2015 to study “culinary arts,” that is, presumably cooking. He dropped out of the course after injuring his hand.

The student-visa rorts were promoted as a way to bring in highly skilled, or intended highly skilled, migrants.
