Apropos of the Green’s 45% income tax policy, I wonder if they have thought through the consequences. With their MPs being levied 10% of salary for Party purposes, the Party finances will take quite a hit.

  The Greens have cherry picked that survey on high net worth individuals. Apparently it included the titbit that on average they paid $2.5 million tax each. The Greens left that bit out.
  I think the those high net worth are paying well. They are paying their way. If you have a minimum income, as the Greens propose why not a maximum tax for individuals.
  So if you pay in say $2.5 million in the year, it’s enough, and you don’t even have to do a tax return. Done.

    actually, people earning under 125k will pay less tax on their income under the Green’s proposal than they currently do now. The income tax changes from the Greens will see a lot of people paying less income tax than National’s income tax proposed changes.

      Barely. Someone on $120,000 will pay $30,250 in income tax under the current rates, $29,150 under the Greens proposal, and $29,477 under National’s figures released in 2022. Presumably National’s thresholds would be even higher now, being indexed to inflation.
      
      So even on last years inflation figures, someone on $120K would only be better off by $6.28 a week under the Greens than National.

Another very good discussion by The Duran on the escalating situation in Europe. Again, you will not hear this open discussion in the lying MSM. These guys have been closely following the NATO v Russia war for some time and have proven to be pretty accurate in their predictions. They have a good handle on the big picture as well as the latest developments on the battlefield.

This post is particularly bleak however. Their assessment is that the escalation is now on a path to WWIII. They discuss possible off ramps, but none of them seem plausible.

I’m keen to read others views on how does this cluster realistically de-escalate? To say “Russia should just withdraw” is La-la Land thinking, that’s never going to happen. To say “NATO should just smash Russia” is the pathway to WWIII

      NATO wasnt in Ukraine before Russia invaded.
      It still isnt.
      When are you guys going to realise Putin was always going to invade because he clings to the Russian doctrine of having Countries it controls as security barriers.
      He has other Countries on the invade list too.
      Including Poland- which wont happen now given the huge increase in the military there.
      Putin is crazy paranoid as the West really couldn’t be bothered with invading Russia.
      Plenty of oil and gas elsewhere and there is better Software too. All their talented young people have gone to Europe.
      The sad fact is that Russia’s military has been exposed as corrupt, under trained and poorly equipped.
      I’m picking this will grind down to a ‘draw’ with Russia probably keeping their land bridge.
      If Zelensky wants to end this, he should offer water supplies to Crimea and mark up a Map and start talking- maybe he will after they see how their Counter offensive goes.

  The use of the conspiracy theory label is a great way to shut down any discussion. By conflating reasonable arguments with ridiculous arguments they do a great job of shutting down any arguments.
  
  There are really two dimensions to the lab leak stuff:
  
  1) How did it get into the population?
  * From the wet market
  * Lab leak/accident
  * Deliberate release
  
  2) Was it a natural virus?
  * Completely natural from bats etc. Nothing to do with the lab.
  * Being researched on in the lab.
  * Being modified in the lab through selective breeding.
  * Artificially created.
  
  On the release front, only one makes sense: that it was accidentally released in a lab leak. For example, a cleaner stole dead lab animals for sale in the wet market or someone checked the wrong test tube down the drain.
  
  There are tens of thousands of wet markets in China. Only one of them is within a few hundred metres of a virus research lab. It is beyond ridiculous to think this was just a coincidence.
  
  It also wasn’t a deliberate release for at least two reasons: You would release it far away from any virus lab to avoid suspicion (unless you wanted to create suspicion I suppose) and you’d use a more infectious virus. The SarsCov2 was far from the most infectious virus we have encountered.

    I suspect you mean you would use a more virulent virus as a bioweapon, covid is pretty close to as infectious as you would want.
    And it would depend on your aim, if you wished to introduce world wide political control you may not want to kill large numbers of people with a bio weapon.
    If you want to kill enemy populations, you want a bioweapon with controllable delivery and spread and the ability to confer immunity on first yourself, and second your own assets.

      One way to look at it is that if you really wanted to deliberately create international fearmongering you couldn’t do much better:
      * It would start in China, North Korea or some similar place that the world does not trust.

      Although they’re classed as a Weapon of Mass Destruction, bioweapons are not intended to kill large numbers of people – and they don’t have to.
      
      What they’re intended to do is cripple the society attacked by forcing it to largely shut down and quickly become dysfunctional so it can be attacked by conventional military means. Ultimately that could mean merely walking into a nation where only 2-3%, perhaps 5% have died, and taking it over.
      
      In that respect, were I a member of the PLA intelligence and planning group, I’d regard C-19 as a very interesting test.

        Excellent question Ian. How about a direct correlation between increased hurricane frequency and intensity vs CO2 levels. There isn’t one, and hurricanes are not becoming more frequent or stronger.
        Same with temperature, wild fires, rainfall.
        In fact, if you actually read the IPCC report (not the news articles) you will see the report actually acknowledges that there is no correlation.

      Ian, to your question “what would such evidence look like?”, I suggest:-
      
      Observable cause and effect, including repeatable experiments based on high quality input data and published method leading to initial hypothesis being validated, all conducted in a environment that was free of: –
      (a) reliance on models
      (b) unfalsifiable assertions
      (c) secretly ‘adjusted’ input data
      (d) political and commercial agendas
      
      In other words, practically the polar opposite of what has been happening for the last 30 years.

      The problem with that is that if we use the latest “science” on methane emissions, which would make agriculture responsibile for an eighth of New Zealand’s emissions, reaching the CO² reduction targets NZ has signed up for becomes an insoluble problem.
      Farmers make up a tiny percentage of NZ’s population, about .2 of a percent, it relatively easy to knock a number of them on their head along with their cows to make a political point.

    My take. The people who own the rights to the lab made grass species, also own the media.

    Let me tell you, native grasses will not disappear. Us farmers have spent years trying to breed better grass species, they just die out. One good drought, the natives move in again.         2 years of covid with my kids spending more time at home then at school, followed by strikes and now my kids are being sent home in the afternoon twice this week for parent teacher interviews (how many parents can even attend?) . Teachers lost my support quite some time ago.

      Due to strike action, teachers only days, public holidays and parent teacher interviews my son has missed more classes of one subject then he has attended. Project due in a couple of weeks but only one class between now and then.
      
      Teachers telling them that the pay offer from the govt doesn’t arrive until 2025. We looked at this and what they are saying is they wont catch up with inflation until then. When the teachers locked in 3% (?) pay rises each year three years ago and inflation was 0.5% they throught they were great. Now they complain about it. Perhaps the unions should stop doing 3 year pay agreements?
      
      Lucky the teachers are doing this for the kids.

      In reality the kids should just go to school , some of their classes will still actually be being run by the non union members , the rostering home wording is very carefully done the whole thing is a bit of a con between the ppta and ex ppta members who now work at the MOE.

      Teachers are demanding pay for the stress of working all hours, even “they are not holidays” but put wage negotiations on hold during school holidays. In the good old days with the boilermakers union they would have been locked out after such rolling stoppages.

    Wait for Labour / MOE to sign up to an outrageous agreement that will bankrupt the next government. The extra non class time in the current agreement is already impossible given staff availability.
    
    This will be announced just prior to election campaign time. The unions will then throw their full support behind labour and urge their member to vote Labour. All this after 6yrs of major industrial action and long drawn out negotiations.

  Excellent. No doubt they’ll start next term with a Sloth Week, where no-one will bother to turn up.
  
  I suggest Wrath Week coincide with Waitangi Day and Lust Week with Valentine’s Day. Gluttony Week could be celebrated at the year end, with a different festival feast every day.
  
  Envy Week should mark the start of the election period, which can end with Greed Week. In non-election years, Envy Week can happen in the term two along with Pride Week and Greed Week can precede Gluttony Week.
  
  These celebrations will herald the successful transition of our society away from oppressive traditions of virtue and service into the liberation of values and entitlement.

It seems like this article, https://archive.fo/ncRjh [$tuff] might be a bit of a deflection from current affairs, it will be obvious when you get to the end of the article.

The article is asking how mangers should react to extremism at work, that being anyone who thinks that the Jan 6th people are being railroaded is considered an extremist in the example. The unnamed manager at an unnamed organisation wants more power to look into employees outside of work.

Of course the CTU are approached in the article and they seem to think that some beliefs should not be tolerated in the workplace (but their beliefs are fine and protected under law) so I assume they mean anyone who thinks unions are terrible for the most part.

It looks as though Jack Tame’s line of questioning of Chris Luxon yesterday on Q&A was no coincidence, but instead was part of a wider agenda:

Clearly Luxon is going to be attacked by the Left as a “rich prick” who owns multiple properties. That of course fits nicely with the Green Party’s wealth tax narrative, with their policy launched yesterday at the some time as Tame was asking Luxon if anyone in Parliament owned more properties than him.

As long as Luxon’s assets have been accurately declared, there’s no problem. There is no conflict of interest at the moment, because Luxon is an opposition politician, not a Minister, and does not come under the ambit of the Cabinet Manual. I am sure he will seek advice on managing any perceived or actual conflicts of interest when that changes.

Between Tame’s attack however, and the disgraceful questioning by Cushla Norman of TVNZ, there’s a strong suspicion that journalists from state owned broadcasters are colluding with the Left to set the narrative for the election.

  The current law allows Luxon to redevelop his properties with higher density and make profits by doing so. The change National wants would allow the council to stop him doing that. He can only lose, not gain, from National’s proposal.

  I thought Tame’s questioning of Luxon yesterday was an utter disgrace. His very obvious bias shone through like a dazzling light. I would have turned the TV off but I was interested to hear what Luxon had to say. However I was exclaiming at Tame all through the excruciating interview. Tame isn’t a Journalist – he’s very obviously without a doubt in the Left camp.

  Odd that Hipkins, who is PM and therefore able to implement policy, also owns multiple houses but is only briefly mentioned at the bottom of the article.
  But Luxon, who is not in Govt and therefore has minimal effect on current policies, is highlighted, headlined and blasted for conflicts !

    You can be more than 50% Maori, as it turns out. If a half-Maori marries a pure Maori, their children will be 75% Maori, so whether those early part-Maori married other part- or non-Maori, or full-blooded Maori, will determine how Maori someone’s ancestry is today.
    
    Oriini Kaipara is the journalist whose DNA test result came back showing that although she has European ancestors, her parents had passed on only their non-Pakeha genes. Apparently it’s extremely rare, but it can happen.

  And stationery expenses and signs have soared.
  Have just spent two days in medical emergency hospitalisation and have to say that medically it was all brilliant, except the lovely Asian Nurses are totally understaffed.
  Now it took 7 hours to get signed out as it appears that the admin side ids not very active – I had to threaten to discharge myself before action.

I badly want Christopher Luxon to do well. I am not a National voter but I recognise that getting rid of the present incompetent government is the most critically important issue facing the country. That means National getting plenty of support. It means Luxon performing well.

I have now dragged myself to watch Q and A. Besides Jack Tame being his usual jumped up self and too full of his own importance ( do these guys ever watch the great interviewers of the past to see what is a more effective but less rude way to elucidate answers – David Frost, Larry King ??) I was disappointed in some of Luxon’s responses.

For example, when asked about why he advocated improved national productivity but had his savings tied up in housing he fluffed around awkwardly and left us thinking he didn’t have a useful answer and is guilty of being two-faced.

Here is how he could have answered: “Jack, every investment adviser ever known says, ‘spread your risk’ so I have done just that. I have a range of investments but because of time constraints I have tended to weight my portfolio with investments that need little hands on attention. Secondly, not everyone can afford a house or wants to own a house. They want a rental. Without rental housing we would have an even bigger problem that we have under the present lot. I am providing a roof for families in need. Lastly, programmes like Q and A would be much better focused on how to grow the whole cake for everyone’s benefit than focusing on those who have worked hard and become well off”.

He still has some way to go to be less commercial and more political. He needs to hurry up.

  NZ has too much capital invested in residential property and not enough in the sharemarket and other productive activity. That is a real problem and Luxon really is contributing to it. You can have a diverse portfolio that needs little hands on attention and does not include residential property.
  
  Of course it would be great if media spent their time analysing how policy would impact the big issues, instead of focusing on all this little stuff. Tinetti and Wood might prefer that too. But the media don’t have the intellect to do that, and the point about all Luxon’s houses is essentially correct.

  Luxon is on record as confirming that when he entered politics he divested all of his equity in shares and stocks to remove any suggestions of conflicts of interest. As can be seen with Wood’s recent exposure, this is a positive, not a position that should be used to criticise him. Actually it confirms his management and organisational skills, and also moral integrity.

  You probably can’t donate plasma at a mobile clinic. The NZBlood website says new donors up to age 71 and existing donors up to age 75. I would suggest phoning your nearest blood centre and making an appointment to donate plasma.
  
  The bigger problem is excluding people from the UK, apparently due to mad cow, even though only three people in the UK itself have contracted it from a blood transfusion in 40 years.

    Most countries either tax retirement savings on the way in (ie. you pay tax on income before saving, then interest is tax free) or on the interest earned (ie. deposits are tax free, but you pay tax on the interest).
    
    NZ double dips.
    
    If you earn $100k and put it into savings at 5%:
    * You first pay 39% tax on the income, so it is down to $61k.
    * The 5% earns you $3k and a hamburgers. IRD leaves you with $2k and two thirds of a hamburger.
    
    So your $100k income has lost $39k in value, then the returns are also reduced by 60%!

        If you have $100k to save then that is your marginal earnings and you’re pulling in $250k or more. The marginal rate is 39% isn’t it? So that $100k is suffering 39% income tax.
        
        Ditto the tax you are paying on interest.

        1) the 39% kicks in at 180k so you dont pay it if you earn 100;

        That would assume that ‘the left’ (which no one ever seems to clearly define) maintains a preference for Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, etc over countries such as Italy, Greece, Austria, etc.
        That’s just bonkers.
        One of the reasons Kiwiblog comments are so rib-tickling is the relentless drive by some commenters to ascribe everything they don’t like to some ill-defined enemy, be that ‘the Left’, ‘globalists’, ‘woke academics’, ‘the MSM’ or whatever.

        Yes, I do dispute that. As mentioned above, you would need to provide a definition of ‘the left’ first, and then show how everyone you identify as part of ‘the left’ adores those specific countries.
        I guess it’s possible that some members of the Communist League or Socialist Aotearoa (both unregistered political parties) might have affection for ‘Russia, China, Cuba’. But I’m guessing you wish to define ‘the left’ more broadly than that.

      RNZ like nearly all Western MSM are heavily in to an anti Russian Bias. In my view the edited story was closer to balanced information than the Reuters original.

      Got asked by a couple to expand on some of the facts that I have discovered reading other sources than MSM.
      
      eg that Russia is NOT falling apart due to sanctions and actually has a stronger GDP (1,2%) verses USA (1.1%) ie 10% better. UK (minus 0.3%)
      
      Russians are not turning against Putin.
      Sure there will be some in a population of 145+ million.
      Using US stats of anti Bidens ie only 25% of Democrats prefer Joe. (25% of 50% of 336 Mill)

Oh dear! Canadian trans-activist MPP and left-wing nutjob Joel Harden falsely claimed he was punched while counter-protesting at a gender ideology protest. Even said “But I’ll take a punch for queer and trans youth any day.”

Inconvenient video shows him scratching his own face while using his megaphone to shout down the people the protestors actually came to hear. Also, despite thousands of cameras and phones used by press, citizen journalists and police, not one photo or video of this despicable troll being punched could be found – what are the odds?

Some of the comments are pure gold, including calling him “Jussie Harden” and suggesting he also had a noose put around his neck and had bleach poured into his eyes.

I have no idea what the story they refer to is, or any of the details – and now I’m curious. What was the story about? Which elements were false?

Sounds like the story was a puff piece, a feel-good story about someone from the gutters who made it big – only now they’ve discovered the story was a pack of lies. Hmm … so many unanswered questions.

    If I’m earning $280k a year, then the top $100k which is what I would have been saving is cut down from $100k to $55k.
    The interest I am earning is further cut by 45%, to the point where it is rotting in the bank (ie. the interest is less than inflation).
    
    Sounds to me like there isn’t much point in earning more than $180k. I’ll downsize.

A few years ago I got the impression that there was a demographic of prosperous women who supported the Green Party – think Fendalton SUV driving mums. Because they wanted to feel good about ‘protecting the environment’.

I can’t see any of this support remaining. The Greens have morphed into a full on New Zealand Communist Party. Their policies would have those Fendalton and Khandallah women running for the hills.

  The SPM is mainly written by quangos and political groups….
  Its often noted that the SPM excludes some of the, ahem, more inconvenient facts that alarmists like Renwick don’t like eg, low probability weather is getting more extreme and sea level rise is minimal.

Heard the Hosk saying earlier this morning…. he had it on good authority that Cindy had negotiated a $1.5 million advance from Penguin for her book.
Reckoned they would need to sell well over 25,000 copies @ $59.95 just to break even. But with Aussie in the mix, she could even end up with additional royalties.

I know a lot of the girls from tennis will buy a copy. My doubles-partner is keen to get the inside goss on what’s happening with ClarkE. And whether or not there’s any mention of that other guy (his name escapes me for the moment) the Czech drug smuggler who’s still waiting to be deported.

I’ll borrow Prue’s copy once she’s read it and report back.

I might have misjudged Luxon on his view on climate change. He appears to believe the BS put out by James Shaw. I thought he was poll-driven on the issue.

It still does not change things that much as we do not want to listen to the clowns in Climate Change Commission. If they do not have enough confidence in their opinion to debate other experts with a contrary view we should not screw our farmers on their recommendation.

  One graph in the report (pg. 383) shows CH4 emissions from sheep/beef dropping since the 90s, and emissions from dairy essentially flat from about 2013.
  If we then look at pg. 188 we see that the effect of methane emissions doesn’t last all that long (the doc claims 50 years, but other sources say it’s around 12), and they claim that the effect of them is about 0.00006°C (yes, that much!). As this report was written before AR6, which admits they’ve overestimated the warming effect of methane by a factor of 3-4, we can cut that back to around 0.000015°C.
  As agricultural emissions have not risen since about 2007 (according the the CC document), we can conclude that the miniscule warming effect of our agricultural emissions has also not risen since then.
  And some idiots want us to commit economic suicide because of this?
