What he writes is common sense and factual. The politicians will never accept that. There are too many vested interests.
The best action is hardening the infrastructure especially with new builds, stop development on floodplains. and fix up what we already have. The last is what Drainage Boards used to do before they got taken over by Regional Councils and then dropped.
Before it flooded, I used to shake my head at all the willows down the Esk. Get rid of those. Build bridges with no centre piers would help. So would more gravel extraction at the rivers’ lower reaches.
But easier to blame climate change than their own failings.

  Well said – The same applies to Ashburton, as if the rivers had been cleared of gravel and dead willows there wouldn’t have anywhere near the damage that occurred. Greens on Environment Canterbury have a bloody lot to answer for.

An appeal? Of FFS. Get a grip on the nasty reality of our MMP politics entangled with a relentless ideology that has been pushed through academia into schools and with an MSM that’s 99% on board, such that National Party politicians shit themselves at the thought of doing any of the above.

You want action? Real action? Could we go Dutch:

The Farmer-citizen movement (BBB) in the Netherlands appeared set to win 15 of the 75 Senate seats in the nation on Wednesday, celebrating a victory over climate activists who are seeking to buy out farms and cut down on livestock numbers of Dutch farmers.

The BBB or BoerBurgerBeweging, as the party is called in Dutch, started in 2019 and won one single Lower House seat in 2021. After the recent election, the BBB is now the third-largest political party in the Netherlands.

Tribal politics has its limits, and a provincial-farmer based political party would have a wider and wealthier base to start from than most small parties in New Zealand to date. Depending on how badly farmers get crushed by a future National “Blue-Green” party would determine how well organised they might be also.

Admittedly if National lost the provinces the remaining urban/”Liberal” rump, the Luxon-Willis faction, would simply go into coalition with Labour-Greens anyhow.

Still, I figure we’re only one more National-led administration away from this. Farmers and the provinces are still driven by fear of the Left, but another few years of economic sacrifice at the alter of the Climate Gods might be the tipping point.

  A lot of roading bridge damage from Tangoio north was caused by forestry slash damming in the riverbed, overtoppling the bridge. I do not know if those pads where it came from had been well constructed and adequate drainage provision, but just overwhelmed by heavy rain. It is likely that they did not.
  The damage from rivers south of there seems to have been almost all willow and other riverbed tree debris. That is not forestry.

  What he has done is in one and a half pages put forward a reasonable and sane alternative to anything the Greens have promoted. He also highlights forestry as the poor cousin in the export earnings stakes, the majority of the advantages ending up in Asia.

Of course manmade climate change does not cause weather – but it makes it worse.

Of course adaptation is required – desperately now – because the oil companies’ lies prevented adequate mitigation for 40 years.

AGW is a coherent and comprehensive theory based on many lines of evidence that has the status of ‘fact’ – like evolution, tectonic plates…

Climate Denialism is a religion – wishful thinking with no evidence. Whatsoever. Just slogans and junk from crackpots and a couple of retired climate scientists (Lindzen and Curry). Versus about 150,000 working and publishing in the field.

  You could only think this way by being very naive or a rusted on lefty who only reads stuff from the lefty media echo chamber.
  
  Every single line is BS cranked out by the alarmism industry. Dig a bit deeper and you soon find it’s all a house of cards built on a half baked hypothesis. How this works is there are grants galore for the uni alarmists (you will be shut down if you try to get funding for research disproving the narrative) and a gold mine of clicks for the alarmist media whores. Then there’s the all important peer approval for the social poser. Then there’s cancellation and slander for the honest scientists presenting the facts. There are dozens of retiring and recently retired highly credentialed and experienced climate scientists who do speak out because they can’t be cancelled. Around 50 called bullshit on the IPCC’s shonky politicised processes. This should give people a clue as to what is really going on. It’s a convenient vehicle for doomsday environmentalists, communists and woke activists to carry out a revolution.
  
  The 150,000 scientists claim means nothing. It sounds like another shonky Cook/Oreskes style propagandistic and half baked “study”. As we saw with the Maori Science debacle with the Royal Society there are legion woke “scientist” twits who should know better who will support the popular woke narrative no matter how batty and unscientific it is.
  
  Anybody who uses the term “denier” in a contested scientific field like this is simply a religious nut from the cult of woke as far as I am concerned.

This would be great time to study whether the government policies to retire farmland, into mainly radiata pine plantations after Cyclone Bola, resulted in better or worse outcomes downstream, than if the land had been resown in pasture and grown new topsoil, with the worst erosion areas planted in manuka or various other erosion control measures.
