The world witnessed more transgender violence yesterday when a swimmer named Riley Gaines, who had to compete against the biologically intact male swimmer Lia Thomas and share a dressing room with him, was attacked by a mob, punched twice and had to be protected by the police for several hours.

This follows hard on the heels of the transgender mass murderer at the Nashville Christian school, the assault on Posie Parker in an Auckland Park by transgender activists and a grossly underreported case of a 19 year old male who calls himself Lily and has been arrested after threatening schools and charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder.

Isn’t it about time that we stopped affirming transgender and actually realised it is a mental illness?
And on the broader front, isn’t it time to stop affirming these deviant cults? Because transgender appears to be a cult. I would say Drag Queens is a cult as well. I would say climate change is a cult.

Wouldn’t it be better to observe the Christian holidays and spend an hour a week in church? Because this is what happens when people abandon their faith. They embrace a cult.
When people abandon Christianity they don’t get more reasonable. The trans-people are not reasonable. This climate change doom and gloom is not reasonable.

I would say to my fellow New Zealanders if you spend an hour a week in church then the world would be a lot less crazy place.

        That’ a mighty big supposition, even two mighty big suppositions, while (usually in these debates) assuming facts not in evidence with regard to the implied religious alternative.
        
        Moreover, you might need to define ‘transgenderism’. Dressing up as/pretending to be the opposite gender is one thing; claiming ‘rights’ to women’s sports, prisons, restrooms, and chemically or surgically altering children’s bodies raise other issues.

      Science is indeed a very valuable activity, but it is strictly limited to questions of cause and effect between material objects. That’s it. It’s optimism about telling us much about what it is to be human and about values and ends is misplaced to say the least. Like Kant showed with regard to the limits and contradictions of our faculty of reason, science eventually runs up against itself and shows itself to be of limited value beyond surface descriptions of things. But Scientism is a secular religion for some.

      @Matt – sorry that’s just not true. There is literally zero evidence of a God, never mind a Christian one. Spent ~ 15 years at Catholic schools including a Jesuit one and even they admit there is actually no proof of a God. It’s all a matter of faith.

    This implies that you are a materialist (i.e. that everything that exists exists in a spatio-temporal realm called “nature,” the subject matter of science), yet the laws of logic (and therefore reason as well) aren’t material and have no spatio- temporal location. Logic is immaterial. But the laws of logic exist objectively and are not mental constructs, they are built into all existence itself: If anything exists, then it is true that it exists and false that it doesn’t exist – that is a logical statement that applies to everything. Truth and falsity are logical values.
    
    Secularists cannot consistently make sense of laws of logic. In your atheism and materialism, all is physical. But laws of logic are not physical. They have no material substance, and no particular location in space. So laws of logic necessarily cannot exist in a materialistic universe. Yet materialists continue to use laws of logic, despite the fact that they cannot make sense of them. Secular thinking is contradictory, and therefore cannot be consistently true. This is a glaring inconsistency typically unnoticed by those who reject transcendence of the material.
    
    Your atheism and materialism is circular: “I rely on reason and science (alone), because reason and science tell us everything there is to know.”(using a logic that you cannot use, btw). But says who? You’re just begging the question.

    Funnily enough, liberal “reason” tells us that if we are all without any essence and that we are each just collections of completely physical atoms existing in the void with no intrinsic end, then “gender transitioning” is a perfectly legitimate proposition. I don’t see how people can even have any intrinsic dignity or worth in a materialistic and atheistic worldview, because what would such value propositions even mean in that case?

      Problematic fact. Trans people are not “transitioning” into the opposite gender. They are transitioning into a cosmetic simile (and a very poor and unappealing one when it comes to “bottom surgery”).

    Is there any evidence that those who use hormones in an attempt to change gender are not insane to begin with and only become insane afterwards? We know if they are left wing they are far more likely to self-identify as having been diagnosed with a mental illness.
    
    Specifically what incurable diseases do they suffer from? Cancers? If so what cancers? Or what diseases?

  When will people who think like this realise that where sport is seperated along gender lines, it is done so for BIOLOGICAL reasons, and not for IDENTITY reasons.
  
  I weigh 99KG. If I Identified as weighing 79kg, could I play restricted weight grade rugby?
  
  If I was a heavyweight Boxer, could I identify as a bantamweight and make a career out of that division?
  
  At a Biological level, we are who we are. If you are a biological male, and transition to Female, there are certain things you cannot do. You can live a life as athentic to your beliefs as possible, but you cannot circumvent the biological.

        We have very good customs around the winter solstice and spring equinox. For the former, I would suggest bashing together the existing statutory holiday for the King’s birthday and Matariki. Plenty of rituals for everyone there. For the latter, move the New Year’s second holiday and Labour Day (include Rā Maumahara as well) to late September, and use the spring rituals that have nothing to do with religion – chocolate, rabbits and eggs).

      Why not abandon public holidays completely and give working folk an extra 12 or so days leave to use how and when they like, subject to the usual agreement with the employer. No mandated trading restrictions, no penal rates.

    Personally I think we should ‘fix’ the Easter break. The complicated formula to determine Easter is rather arbitrary. This is especially as some churches and countries use a similar formula meaning Easter is a week or so different from what we are used to.

      We’ve had decades of sidelining Christianity in the name of inclusion, which would seem to coincide with declining Christian faith in New Zealand. Perhaps the two things are not unrelated?
      
      If constant promotion of abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, etc. , is done specifically to normalise those things and make them more acceptable, is it not likely that constantly ignoring what were majority beliefs will have a similar effect in making them less acceptable?
      
      Stats NZ indicates about 1.3million Christians in the country – does anyone think that is reflected in say, funding from NZ On Air for programmes showing this aspect of NZ life? Or Auckland Council support for Christian celebrations?Contrast that with their decorations for Matariki, Diwali and Chinese New Year.
      
      Whether or not you are Christian, it would seem our celebrations of diversity have a huge gap in them.

    As I read the article, 38% identify as Christians and that is enough to scrap Christian based holidays. Fair enough. As I read the room, there is diminishing support for the monarchy in NZ so let’s scrap the Kings birthday. The government is re-writing the treaty so let’s just put Waitangi Day on hold while we see if the finished product is worth celebrating.
    Can we really, in good conscience, celebrate Labour Day when hospital staff are working 12 hour shifts while other industries are clamouring for the 4 day working week?
    If respect for the beliefs of 38% is not enough for a public holiday, are we going to re-think Matariki?
    
    And what about this “Aotearoa” lark? Is this based on sound research and polling or is it just the part of the Public Interest Journalism Fund deal? Are Ngai Tahu on board with the renaming the whole country with the name given to the North Island?
    And if Stuff don’t believe in Easter, why didn’t I get a paper yesterday?

I see there was some debate here yesterday about a noted US Foreign Policy commentator, John Mearshiemer, and his take on the Ukraine War:“Yes, I am aware of Mearshiemer’s view. He is wrong.”.

I haven’t agreed with all – or perhaps even much – of Mearshiemer’s analysis over the last twenty years, but after reading this article in the Claremont Review, Why Are We In Ukraine?, I think the following comment about him should be noted:

Mearsheimer is skeptical of idealistic crusades, such as the one in Iraq that George W. Bush drew the country into in 2003. He is also skeptical of the idea that America has permanent moral commitments that transcend national interest, including the alliance America has maintained with Israel across the decades. To Mearsheimer, the American strategy of rights- and democracy-promotion since the end of the Cold War appears largely foolish and self-defeating. On the one hand the architects of that policy hold Mearsheimer in low esteem—Bush and Trump advisors no less than Obama and Biden ones. On the other hand Mearsheimer has been, over the two decades since the Iraq invasion, far more often right than wrong.

  America has a long-standing internal debate between (a) America-first isolation and (b) America-led global engagement. This has been the case for over 100 years.
  
  The isolationist argument is that America should ensure its own national security, and not be drawn into external wars.
  
  The engagement argument is that America is a values-led nation and society and needs to protect and advance those values globally.
  
  So view Mearsheimer in those terms … that it seems he is from the isolationist camp.
  
  The difficulty for the isolationist camp is that history has shown that eventually foreign difficulties and strife become so significant and large that even an isolationist America is drawn into them – and that by the time America does get involved the work needed to sort the situation out is extreme. WWI and WWII are both simple examples of this. So history says that the isolationist argument that “Leave them to fight their own fights, we’re fine over here by ourselves” doesn’t actually work.

    In the case of Lia Thomas, the USA college swimmer it is opportunism. He was ranked at number 600 odd as a male swimmer. But number 1 as a female swimmer.
    
    Many people have no idea of the gulf betwen post puberty female athletes and male athletes. If you look at female Olympic champions in athletics, those women would be beaten by hundreds of their male counterparts. In the USA typical high school make champion athletes would beat female Olympians in the same events.
    
    There is an excellent study that presents the data across all athletic events. You can probably find it by searching.
    
    Of course, as usual, no New Zealand journalist can be bothered doing 30 minutes of research before parroting on about the value of gender diversity in sport.

      You would have thought the point of participating in competitive sport, or any kind of competitive activity, is to set yourself challenges and push yourself to improve. You do that by competing with people at your own level and striving to get into higher levels so you can compete against people better than you. There’s no challenge and no satisfaction in beating people who are at a disadvantage to yourself.
      
      Could Sam Whitelock beat me in an arm wrestle? Absolutely. Would he want to? No, it would be no achievement on his part and a total waste of his time.
      
      If trans people really loved their sport they should be pushing to be allowed their own class, or even to compete against bio men.

      The problem with that is the very significant risks involved and ongoing health issues, so many trans people choose to have only “top surgery” and not “bottom surgery”.
      
      A genuine trans person who has gender dysphoria and living their life as the opposite gender I have no issue with. The problem I have is with people who are self-identifying for non-genuine reasons. Whether it’s to gain an advantage in sports or college scholarships, or as an opportunity to gain entry to women’s spaces for predatory purposes. And we can’t tell who is genuine and who is not.
      
      The activists say they are not safe in men’s bathrooms. I can understand that. But they refuse to acknowledge that women do not feel safe with some self-identified “trans women” in their bathrooms. We don’t know which ones are the dangerous ones. The more violence and threats there are from the activists, the more we are concerned about our safety with trans women in our bathrooms. Until the activists are ready to have a conversation which does not include violence, the issue will not be resolved for either side.

      What I find worse than “pregnant people” or “chest-feeding” is the move to call women “menstruators” or “people with a vagina” or “people with a uterus”.
      
      Here’s my perspective. If a trans man is pregnant, due to still having female reproductive organs, and he wants to be called a “pregnant person”, fine, call him what he wants. If he wants to “chest feed”, fine. I don’t care. What he is called is not important to me. That’s his business.
      
      But don’t tell a woman that she can’t be referred to as a “pregnant woman” and that she can’t “breast feed”.

  Ordinary (ie biological) women are a major potential political force. Jacinda won a landslide in the last election because she appealed individually to many ordinary women. One would think that women collectively would have the political clout to ensure the rights of ordinary women are upheld (particularly with regard to washrooms and sport), but regrettably they do not. I think Chris Luxon would be very vocal about upholding the rights of ordinary women if he considered it would translate into votes for his party. However there would be many considerations influencing how women vote and supporting this right would not be a priority for many women. Therefore why rock the boat since the objective is to win the forthcoming election. Possibly given time sufficient ‘influencers’ will develop among ordinary women that their rights in these areas will be protected.

    I am probably politically naieve. But I believe that if someone in politics spoke up honestly and said what most of us know deep in our hearts to be true, they would capture far more votes than they might lose. This reliance on “focus groups” is insane. People will often say what they think they are supposed to say. Like the Emperor’s New Clothes, sometimes it takes just one brave voice to state the obvious.
    
    The moronic idea that we have to ask “what is a woman” seems to me to be an ideal time to speak out and damn the shrieking idiots trying to claim the impossible.

Sunak in the UK can be commended for some common sense moves to implement a solution to what has become an idiotic “problem”. The whole gender circus.

On Tuesday, it emerged that the Government had asked the equalities watchdog for advice on changing the wording of the Equality Act to specify that it protects “biological sex” rather than “sex”.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) recommended that such a change would “bring legal clarity” in eight areas, including sports and single-sex areas.

Sounds eminently sensible.

Sex is not “assigned” at birth, sex is defined at birth by x and y chromosome make up with an miniscule number of exceptions.

        No, he’s so far been charged with concealing payments in connection with another crime. The indictment doesn’t (have to) detail what that other crime is – although the court case will. It’s likely that other crime will be some variation of electoral fraud and/or campaign finance laws.
        
        I do expect more charges will come closer to the court date (at this stage the DA just needs to show enough to get the process underway, but won’t want to show his full hand to the defence any earlier than necessary).
        
        Note that the common thread to most of Trump’s legal and impeachment problems is his willingness to pervert elections.       Exactly. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe by 2040 we will all be driving affordable EVs, including minimum wage workers in south Auckland. All the electricity necessary will be produced by renewables. It will be affordable electricity. Magic technology will have slashed methane from agriculture.
      
      Carbon zero will have been achieved without any material impacts on energy security, energy affordability, and on agriculture. Indeed the Government’s current goal of doubling agriculture exports by 2040 will also have been achieved, despite wholesale replacement of sheep and beef farms by pine forest.

The terms “misinformation” and “disinformation” have been the primary tools used by the government and their favoured narrative control managers, the mainstream media. This was an attempt to shut down any dissenting voice during the 3 years of the disastrous covid response.

The creation of aptly titled “The Disinformation Project” was the cherry on the top of this completely ludicrous notion. Go to their website, it is an embarrassment but they take themselves seriously.

Freddie Sayer from Unherd interviews Jacob Siegel on the topic.

Disinformation is a means by which the Government in cooperation with private tech companies and civil society, NGO groups, censors, uses extra-legal means to censor political discourse around issues like Covid vaccinations, lockdowns, the elections. And in the U.S., it’s a free-for-all. It’s a blank cheque to censor anything. So on one level, disinformation is ostensibly censorship in order to protect national security. In a larger sense, that machinery of censorship is not opportunistically looking to erase certain things from the public record that are unflattering to political elites. It’s actually rather more than that. It is a means of governance. It is a system of power. It is its own system of power, outside of the formal, official — in the U.S., constitutional — means by which the Government is supposed to operate.

This is an extremely dangerous method of deflecting or shutting down criticism for anyone to use, let alone a government.
It has led to massive distrust in many institutions. Mainstream media and journalism is in the gutter, and rightly so.
Refusing to acknowledge any opposing point of view just because you have the money and the power to do so is a road to totalitarianism. It never ends well.

It’s not simply that they are wrong or pernicious, or that this reflects corruption. They actually drive people crazy. They deranged the political system. They ruin the ability for people to engage sanely and transparently in their own politics.

This is the NZ Ardern and her ideologues have created. Their blanket refusal to acknowledge or permit any dissent has now spilled over into other policy areas. Anyone disagreeing with ANYTHING is one or all of a “misogynist, racist, transphobic or far right nazi”.

It is dangerous. We need rational adult discussion, not meaningless labels and ideology.

      Religious claims, of course, can never be ‘substantiated’ as they are by definition a matter of faith.
      Actual allegations against actual people can be substantiated. Whether people believe those allegations will be a more complicated matter, often mixing belief with regard for actual evidence.

      That’s not true. He has been looking into information relating to things like autism and the the increase in its diagnosis with increasing number of childhood vaccinations. He has also found research that shows thimerosal, which is used as a preservative, crosses the blood brain barrier. This has been denied but not proven by vaccine manufacturers. As it is a mercury compound and like all heavy metals it will accumulate in the body. This is not anti vaccine but more related to vaccine manufacturers once again either hiding evidence or not doing due diligence.

I’m getting old and I’ve worked hard all my life. I have made my reputation, the good and the bad, I didn’t inherit my job or my income, and I have worked hard to get where I am in life. I have juggled my job, my family, and made many sacrifices up front to secure a life for my family.
It wasn’t always easy and still isn’t, but I did it all while maintaining my integrity and my principles. I made mistakes and tried to learn from them. I have friends of every walk of life and if you’re in my circle, it should be understood that I don’t have to remind you of what I’d be willing to do for you.
However…. I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth” to people who don’t have my work ethic. People who have sacrificed nothing and feel entitled to receive everything.
I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it themselves.
I’m really tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which, no one is allowed to debate.
I’m really tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all parties talk like their opinions matter to the common man. I’m tired of any of them even pretending they can relate to the life and bank account that I have.
I’m tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.
I’m upset that I’m labeled as a racist because I am proud of my heritage. I never stole any ones land, the government did that..
I’m tired of being told I need to accept the latest fad or politically correct stupidity or befriending a group that’s intent on killing me because I won’t convert to their point of view.
I’m really tired of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives and actions. Especially the ones that want me to fund it.
I’m tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination, or big-whatever for their problems.
Yes, I’m really tired. But, I’m also glad to be in the twilight of my life. Because mostly, I’m not going to have to see the retched, depressing world these young useless idiots are creating.
And lastly, because even though I shouted from the rooftops, no one listened or seemed to give a damn. You reap what you sow, and so do your children.
No one is entitled to anything. You have a choice to work, a choice to stay off drugs, a choice to make something of yourself. I have nothing to do with your choice. That’s all on you. You are entitled to what you earn.
There is no way these thoughts will be widely publicised, unless each of us sends it on! Surely, the politically correct police censors will try to quiet us.

  I agree with everything you have said but will add that I’m tired of successive governments devaluing my dollar to cover for their ineptitude. Three years ago I was confident that I could retire in comfort, that is not looking very likely anymore after Grant’s money printing and Jacinda’s inflation. I have probably lost 1/4 of the value of my savings and real inflation has probably done away with another 1/4 – and it’s not finished yet!

Today we motored round to the local Pak n Sav.
On the way we passed a large new housing development on Coronation Rd. We had a chance to have a good look as we went by because a roundabout being constructed out on the main road slows the traffic to a crawl.
The houses are just awful. Some of them look like a row of huge upended shoe boxes with no attempt at architectural refinement.
Further along a few k’s in Mangere a number of state houses are being/have been erected on Bader Dr.
While nothing flash at least an attempt has been made to enhance the neighbourhood
In days gone by state houses tended to be dreary, cheap places that didn’t stand up well to privately built homes.
Well there’s some classless stuff coming down the conveyor belts these days.

    Also building codes and resource consent requirements often dictate the look of a house, acceptable colour schemes, etc. Add in the actual financial constraints imposed by a shocking imbalance between land and improved value, and off-the-shelf is what most must take.
    
    Combined with small section sizes, well, when you drive through a modern subdivision or even a heavily subdivided established area, the effect is of crowding, sameness, and a very uninspiring massing effect, all in shades of grey, beige, green and off-white.
    
    It can be startling to view a house on a realtor’s website and then visit the property. The presentation experts use the best angles and very wide lenses. The reality though is cramped living areas, narrow hallways, en suites that aren’t really en suites (my pet peeve), limited storage space, and a proximity to neighbours that almost makes a mockery of the term suburb.
    
    But that’s NZ under a land-use restriction regime: a country with land to burn, 10% larger than Great Britain with only 8% of the population, yet with similar property prices. Don’t even get me started on what a mere $500k can get you in sunny Florida. Oh, bugger it, here you go:

  We have them on the Shore. Off Oteha Valley Rd, over at Hobson Point, and even where I live. Houses removed and two story townhouses (are we allowed to call them townhouses?) Hobson Point people may balk, but there is no garage – your car stays out right next to a marine environment. Boat? Fuck that, store your boat in the Westhaven dry stack. Lawn? nope, there is a park down the road for your kids. You know, the park, where the pedos hang out day or night.
  There is a shitload of building happening on the Shore. Where is the money to support this? BIG crash soon and many will suffer – with negative equity.
  Sorry, rant over. Come to the Shore MCos, have a gander.

Today I watched the last international T20 game of the season on SkySport, which NZ duly won with a ball to spare. By the standards of the Blackcaps games of late a mundane finish.
It was also the last game by SkySport and one hopes next year’s broadcasts are a vast improvement.
They seemed to have the bare minimum of cameras.
No drones, no handheld cameras and when a judgement call needed to be made whether a ball went over the boundary or someone touched the rope taking a catch – forget it.
I believe TVNZ does the business next year for free.
I don’t know how it’s all going to financed, but there’s nothing like free to air of a major sport to give it a major boost in popularity.

  If you don’t have time to read all Graham wrote, the guts of what he is saying is that the 3 Waters legislation has been drafted in a very cunning and deceitful . It hides the truth. What truth? It gives Maori complete control of all water in New Zealand. They will be able to charge what they like, do what they like, and they cannot be challenged.
