  I have been following politics since 1968 and voting since 1972. In that time I have only seen 2 Governments that have made a postive contribution to the lives of the citizens and the economy Labour 1984/90 and National 2008/17.
  The rest have ranged from the bland to the downright dangerous.
  So that equates to 15 years out of 55 years or 27% of that time.
  Unless we select and elect quality politicians who set quality policy frameworks the country will never realise its potential.

    We have not elected politicians meeting this simple criteria for decades, mostly recently illustrated of course by Jacinda Ardern and Labour.
    
    However the deep discontent felt by Labour’s failure will not be assuaged by electing (IMHO) the worst group of National politicians ever assembled.
    
    Most recently exampled by Mr Luxon’s loony tune plan to “electrify” NZ. A path he has been persuaded to go down by party donors/ supporters from industries tied to the WEF.
    
    Why do I say its loony tune? Engineering. Simple engineering says it is utterly impossible, and its crazy that Mr Luxon can apply reason to the cancelling of the Lake Onslow project but is unable to do so in respect of his equally impossible CO2 reduction targets (50% reduction by 2030, 100% by 2050)
    
    Net Zero 2050 is most comparable to Orwellian phrases like “War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, and Ignorance Is Strength.” We are being forced to accept lies like “Renewable Energy is Cheap and Clean” .
    
    The International Energy Agency estimates that only a partial energy transition in the USA alone would require increases in the supplies of lithium, graphite, nickel, and rare earths by 4,200%, 2,500%, 1,900%, and 700%, respectively, by 2040.
    
    That these material needs are unable to be met is ignored. However we, as voters, are about to elect politicians who have all agreed to ignore this reality and submit to the Orwellian lie above.
    
    When it all turns to ruin, as it inevitably will, we will deserve everything we get. We purely and simply voted Orwellian liars into power, and we did it willingly and in full understanding.
    
    So we were more than just complicit. We voted for it. No one forced us to. We did it to ourselves, because in the end and in the majority, we’re just as stupid and venal as the lying power seeking people we elected.

        Did you watch Chris Bishop on Q and A this morning? If I wanted to speak my true opinion of his appearance it would not make it through moderation here. So I will use euphemisms.
        
        The “inaccuracies” and “exaggerations” and “distortions” coming from Mr Bishop were so many and so astounding I lost count.
        
        Really, the chance that I would ever get to reform and rebuild Sid Holland’s grand party is about as remote as a pig piloting a spaceship around the sun, but if it ever happened, Chris Bishop would be the very first person I would send down the road.

      Reality, yes the Key govt, with English as Finance Minister recovered the NZ economy after the GFC & despite the three earthquakes.
      
      However, Key would do nothing that would damage his position in the polls…..so, he did nothing courageous like fixing the Family Tax Credit, the welfare system, raise the pension age (which English committed to).
      
      Because of MMP, political leaders are always going to speak to the voters in the centre & whether we like it or not the centre of NZ politics is left of centre, despite what we would like to believe.

        As part of that I read the cabinet advice to the incoming (Kirk) Govt. 1972.
        The result…Kirk did NOTHING and we had power cuts in the mid 80’s.
        Tongario power scheme, started under Holyoake
        The four stage project commenced in 1964 and was completed in 1983: the Western Diversion from 1964 to 1971, the Tokaanu project (Rotoaira Diversion) from 1966 …
        also the Waitaki
        The Upper Waitaki hydro scheme began in 1968 in response to New Zealand’s increased need for power.
        Huntley
        The Huntley Thermal Power Station is highly visible to travelers on State Highway One between Auckland and Hamilton. The power station was built from 1973 to 1983 and was designed to burn both coal and gas. From the late 1960s, as commercially viable sites for further hydro-electricity development were becoming scarce, government power
        So Huntley planned in the 60’s

While am not a Andrea Vance fan you can’t fault her article on Stuff this morning.
Labour , the Prime Minister and Stuart Nash all knew what Jacinda Ardern the former Prime Minister promised the Country when Winston Peter’s decided he would go into Coalition with Labour in 2017 as the Government.
One of the first things the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced was they would be the most honest and transparent Government in history at look what we have, absolutely the opposite, so this Labour Government have lied and abused the system since day one and have got away with without our corrupt media taking them to task.

    Their lairs are in our Universities and the system’s been set up whereby their fodder (cash) will be forthcoming from the Taxpayer forevermore.
    Currently, they wallow in the shit that surrounds Govt and when this Govt is no longer, they will wallow in their own shit turning out new radical Taniwha to spread their venom in schools and society in general.
    Already, these Taniwha have infiltrated and taken control of Local Govt, our Water Infrastructure and associated management of it. They currently want (and will be given) more Radio and TV stations which will be used to facilitate the spreading of even more venom and demands paid for by the NZ Taxpayer.

  I watched Maxine on TV last night. Based on the investigation of murderer Ian Huntley in the UK in 2001.
  One of the two journalists featured suggested hacking phones, and paying large sums to get the story. In this dramatisation she has an Irish accent and looks a bit like Andrea Vance.

Dear PM,
What the hell is going on?
Keir Starmer says that “for 99.9 % of women its completely biological ….and of course they haven’t got a penis” according to the Sunday Times.

Another paper says “Keir Starmer says ‘vast majority’ of women ‘don’t have a penis’ and need safe spaces.

Only a few days ago we had a visitor to this country saying the same thing and one of your ministers said he would prefer “If she never set foot in this country” – Im sure that really got all of New Zealands women really excited – negatively. While you yourself did nothing and said nothing that would persuade the mentally and gender confused from attacking – verbally and physically – anyone standing up for women’s rights.
What is happening? Surely honesty and decency hasn’t broken out?
And whats wrong with Starmer? only a few days ago he couldnt answer the question- “what is a woman?”

Thought on the Nash-crash. If Hipkins did not ask his Office if any knew of any other issues with Nash then Hipkins is utterly incompetent. There was a rumour circulating about Nash well over a year ago. To me it is obvious that this Nash-crash is a cover up. There are more. I also understand there is a hidden scandal in respect on another minister brewing. Labour is a deceitful government and are being found out.

        I think the confusion arises from environmentalist objections to the number of ventilation holes proposed during the consenting process. Impact on the (in)famous snails etc.
        But extra vent holes is a long way from open cast. That was never proposed and AFAIK NZOG never even considered the economics of removing overburden as an open cast coalmine was never going to get consent in a National Park.

I see Hipkins yesterday has doubled down on COVID jab (or is that triple downed??) I wonder if he has looked at all the jab injury data from around the world? Or the stats from the UK that show the following:
For 50-59 yr olds, it takes 43,600 booster shots to reduce COVID hospitalisations by 1. But the jab serious injury rate is 1 in 800. So more injuries by about 50x.
Maybe Hipkins didn’t do maths at school??

  Well, Net zero 2030 would be ludicrous. Utterly unattainable in just 7 years, and the public knows that. You would get the same result here.
  It doesn’t invalidate NetZero 2050, which is 27 years away. Enough time to make very major changes.
  For instance, it is enough time for the great bulk of the vehicle fleet to be emission free. If the import of pure ICE cars stops from 2035 onward, there would be a 50% change in the vehicle fleet from 2035 to 2050. And that would be on top of the significant change in the vehicle fleet that will occur between now and 2035. I would also expect that the entire bus fleet and a very large percentage of the truck fleet will be EV (or hydrogen) by 2050.

It is not remotely credible that cheapest EVs or whatever alternative there is will be available in sufficient numbers. So the bulk of the population will have to forgo private transport.     Is there any analysis of the generation capacity required to electrify the entire light transport fleet? Is that capacity compatible with Chris Luxon’s stated objective of 100 percent renewables? What will be the impact of such capacity on power prices? By “analysis” I mean expert analysis by generation experts.
    
    Secondly, how are you going to plant enough trees to offset agriculture emissions? After 20 years of research there has been little progress in materially reducing dairy emissions. There is some promise in GM rye grass to reduce methane. However there is still a ban on its use in New Zealand.
    
    I appreciate your commitment to net zero in 2050. However I am asking reasonable questions. The answers matter. If we can only get to net zero by halving the dairy herd, what will that do to our standard of living?
    
    I could go on. To summarise, had anyone modelled your end game in 2050 for it’s technical feasibility and it’s impact on living standards?

      Modular nuclear may be a future option. It will be post 2050. There is only one (Hitachi) certified so far. I would say NZ would need to see 20 years of safe operation of modular nuclear before we would say “OK”.
      Modular won’t be common in the usual nations till the 2030’s. Add another 20 years safe operation before NZ buys into it. Maybe planing for the first few in the mid 2040’s to come online in the 2050’s.

    Net zero, without a dramatic drop in standard of living, is not going to happen. Not by 2050 nor 2100.
    Not without us discovering that our understanding of physics is completely wrong.
    
    It could be done if we introduce a stalinistic command and control economy,
    
    Think ploughing fields with horses rather than tractors. Think gulags. Think mass starvation.
    
    Over the last 30 years, hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent on wind and solar electricity generation. This has meant that between 3 and 4 % of the world’s energy now comes from wind and solar. Of course, wind and solar generation only lasts about 25 years so these will need to be replaced.
    
    If we spend hundreds of billions more over the next few years, we might get up to 7 or 8 percent by 2050.
    
    You can pass a law banning the sale of new ICE vehicles.
    You can pass a law requiring that the number of mines for rare earth elements increase.
    
    But it will not happen.
    
    The laws of physics and the laws of economics say no.

With all these people suggesting a wealth tax, capital gains tax and don’t give money to rich superannuitants , I haven’t seen anyone suggest a discount for people like me ( I am not rich incidentally) who didn’t have kids. We have saved the taxpayer thousands of dollars by not using the education or health system for kids and not needing wrap around services if the kids had gone feral.

Surely we should be getting money back.

The error goes back to 2010 and the bill will be in the order of 2 billion dollars or the cost of building a new hospital. I hope Robbo has made allowances for that in his budget.     The estimate doubled from 2021 to 2022. The hard bit is it has to be paid to all those who have maybe retired in the last 12 years or gone overseas or returned to their own countries . Maybe even just moved jobs. It’s an admin nightmare!

  It’s due to changing interpretations of how holiday pay for wage earners was/should be calculated. It arose from a court case in, off the top of my head, 2016 or 2017.
  
  It affects a lot of companies and organisations, not just the health sector.
  
  Basically, the employment laws were poorly drafted.

    Yes it’s due to old leave pay being paid on base rate, not average earnings. My wife’s pay is 125% of base approximately as she works every second weekend and at least half of bank holidays plus she does quite a few night shifts. Every nurse will be different hence the nightmare to sort out. If it’s 2 billion in pay it will probably cost another Billion in pay staff wages to administer. They should have just gone to the union and made a broad brush offer, say two months gross pay per staff member and they could have put this to bed a lot sooner and cheaper.

They are running about 80% in favour of the view that she will be rated poorly.

For what it is worth, my view is that she was fake, divisive and incapable of delivering on anything of substance she promised.

Just watched the TV One Q+A 20 minute interview with Chris Bishop.

How refreshing, a positive guy that is completely on top of his shadow portfolio responsibilites who could confidently answer every questions put to him.

I am struggling to think of even on Labour or Green MP who present their case as well as Chris Bishop did. Well done.

      Solar panels have a life greater than 20 years.
      The 20 year thing comes from manufacturers guaranteeing at least 80% production of a panel from when its new.
      
      From experience of our panels they will go for 40 years and the lithium batteries probably 20+

Duncan, harden up. This sort of thing happens every day to someone.

I was employed by IBM in 1999 when the INCIS contract was terminated. I’d worked for them for nearly 15 years, not just 1. Meeting at 10am announcing it. Then individual meetings with HR.

What I expected was a move back to the head office before re deploying somewhere else.

What I got was a pink slip. HR flat out refused to facilitate any job change. Not half a days notice. Not an hours notice. Bang, right there.

So my advice is to write some names down for future reference, and move on.

Couldn’t believe how many of them are saying they’re going to get yet another Booster jab. Half of them were even wearing masks again today!

When I asked whether they actually believed the likes of Cindy and Chippy had REALLY been Vaxxed, or only received a saline-injection for the cameras, they looked at me aghast 🙁

I was reading an article on Donald Trump’s indictment, and it raised a very interesting point – if this case goes to trial how would you go about finding an impartial jury? And I think this difficulty would work strongly in Trump’s favour.

Virtually all Americans are aware of Trump and most have an opinion on him one way or the other (often strongly held). I assume the jury verdict would have to be unanimous (or at most might allow for a single dissenter). So all it would take would be one or two jurors who agree with the Republican position that these charges are a witch-hunt, and it would become impossible to secure a conviction. Sure the lawyers on both sides will be screening potential jurors, but finding people who are genuinely impartial is going to be tough.

The danger of National’s policy is that it undoes much of an informal compact with Labour to depoliticise education at a time of real struggle.

Take away the labels and skin colours and confine yourself to looking at the actual events, behaviours and actions and I think you’ll struggle to see much difference between European discovery and what Maori did among themselves.

Conquest, invasion, warfare, slaughter of battlefield survivors, enslavement of the conquered etc were elemental features of pre-contact Maori life.

Are we supposed to not notice this? Are we supposed to just overlook it?

And what’s more I am absolutely convinced that if NZ were just offshore from Oz, Maori would have sallied forth and treated the Aborigines even worse than they treated themselves. They would have thought nothing of sailing into Sydney Harbour and taking it over while pushing out the locals. All their history and behaviour screams to me that this is exactly what they would have done.

  On average individuals in history are not particularly better or worse in my mind. They were all raised by their cultures to hold certain values and behave in certain ways. People are mostly sheep and pushing back against the status quo generally just gets you murdered.
  
  But certainly some cultures were/are better than others in terms of what they delivered in improved happiness, freedoms, lifestyle and general fairness to their members. No neolithic culture (polynesians included) are very good in that regard – stuck as they were in unchanging brutish lifestyles. But that’s due to their low technological development and fierce competition for food.
  
  To be clear though; before the advent of contraception every culture had to find ways, planned or emergent, of killing off or otherwise preventing the breeding of the 50-70% excess in kids that were born. Wars, gladiatorial combat, religious pogroms, infanticide, famine, illness, religious celibacy, castration, slavery/indentured servitude, religious sacrifices, judicial executions. There was always something, generally extremely unfair to those targeted, and death is always cruel.

    Maori’s long-term prospects in their Australian invasion activities are irrelevant.
    
    They may have been successful or they may not.
    
    The fact is they would have tried it. Either very strong tribes, seeking even more lands and power or weaker tribes forced to seek new places to live.
    
    Very likely repeatedly and over long durations. And, should they have enjoyed initial or local success they would have kept at it – for generations and until permanent presence was maintained.
    
    It was their culture.
